Pacman -Syu Fails -- Problem wth pm-utils Package

I just tried to do a "pacman -Syu".
I get the following errors:
error:  Could not prepare transaction
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
pm-utils: /usr/bin/on_ac_power exists in filesystem
errors occured, no packages were upgraded
Is there a problem with the new pm-utils package?  What is the fix?

The HAL website (http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/hal) doesn't list pm-utils as a dependency.  However, I am willing to give APCI another try.
I removed apmd and found that all my apm functionality remained despite the absence of a software daemon.  Upgrading hal and installing pm-utils has not caused any issues in my system, contrary to my cautions.

This machine doesnt have much on it, but maybe I hosed when getting vmware installed.  My other machine has a very similar config, and is still working.  Anyway, both running xine and "pacman -Syu" fail, here is the ouput:

      Sarah;
Reviewing ...man pacman...I find not reference to ...-Suf... but i do find one reference to the term.... --f... which is one of the commands which is not recommended(not at all).
The use of ...-Suf... combo is not listed.
I have no idea how to interpret the use of pacman when such upgrade problems are encountered.  And I would not be able to apply the pacman system in any new problem I may encounter without examples that keep me out of more trouble should more " forcing functions" or other work arounds be necessary.
I more than appreciate the post describing how to proceed when the upgrade reports that the file already exists because it provided a procedure which successfully corrected the difficulty and eliminated the "fear of failure" associated with the "force" command(not recommended at all).
Please appreciate that I did read the man pacman many times but am not confident in using elements of that manual in "combination", especially when warned not to use "force".
Please appreciate the fact that pacman is advertised as an asset for arch and, when not encountering the difficulty of this post, it does upgrade efficiently.
I have re-installed arch about a dozen times due to my ignorance of pitfalls in the upgrade process some of which haven't shown themselves in the posts I have read.
But the first ...-Syu...gave the result covered by this post{16 packages rejected).
To one familiar with linux and arch, all things appear in the manual but not in a form recognized from the viewpoint of a newbie especially if interpretation is required.
I am told to research the forums, which I did.  When I found a posted solution and thanked those involved, I am told that the solution is somewhere in the manual......
One's point of view is paramount, expert or novice.....

Trilby wrote:What are you doing?  Wine was never a problem.
I'm sorry - I was trying to help myself by following the errors, as reported.  It seemed that my problem stemmed from lib32-harfbuzz and lib32-freetype2, so I was attempting to remove those.  However, wine was dependent on them so had to be removed first.
I told you want needed to be done.  If you ignore provided advice and instead do other random things (without actually specifying what you are doing) then no one can help you.
Indeed, your posting did point me in the right direction, but did not appear until after I had posted about my experiment with wine.  Wine is no great loss, anyway - I've never managed to achieve anything useful with it!
As you indicated, my problems were resolved by updating package-query:
    yaourt package-query
Edit: In my searching, I did come across advice to use pacaur instead of yaourt - I'm not sure whether this would have made any difference in my case.
My analysis, wrongly or rightly, is this:
    1) AUR packages (some?) appear to list pacman version as a dependency.  "pacman -Syu" was attempting to update itself to 4.2 which broke the dependency (<4.2), even though 4.1.x was running at the time - there's a recipe for confusion!  This was resolved by rebuilding package-query before updating the rest of the system, because the latest version has updated the pacman dependency.
    2) lib32-harfbuzz and lib32-freetype2 (both AUR packages?) were in conflict - they cannot (must not) be dependent on each other.  This was resolved by pulling later versions during the rebuild of package-query.
    3) The libreoffice problem was not an issue.  My mistake was that I ignored a lifetime of experience working in IT - I concentrated on the last-reported error rather than the first!  All I can say in my defence is that eight years of retirement must have addled my brain!
In short, two, unrelated, errors, conflated with another, relatively insignificant, error message, led me on a wild goose chase.
I thank you for your wise counsel!

  • Pacman -syu failed libgl conflict

Tried to do pacman -Syu, had conflicts with nvidia and libgl:
    xf86-video-ati: requires libgl>=7.2

  • Pacman -Syu fails due to mime.types[SOLVED]

    Hi All,
    pacman -Syu results in:
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
    mime-types: /etc/mime.types exists in filesystem
Is it safe to mv mime.types and retry the system upgrade?
I have Gnome and KDE installed.  I currently use KDE and this is "the" KED4.1 upgrade.
    Thanks.
Last edited by whot (2008-08-19 01:03:49)

pacman -Qo /etc/mime.types, showed no owner for the file.
    Performed:
    pacman -Rn mime-types
    pacman -S mime-types
    pacman -Syu
System upgrade finished with no further problems.  Machine booted to KDE4.1
    I've noticed a few things with KDE4.1:
DUUUUDE, where's my data?!!? (calendar data, pim data, etc.)
It seems a bit slow to respond.  I don't know if this is a kernel26 upgrade issue or it's the first time
applications are being used so "things" are being set-up/configured for the first time.
All in all, smooth upgrade to KDE4.1.  Thank you, devs.
    Thanks for your help, fwojciec.

What is this gnutils? I tried to set up gnome-utils, but that did not help. The same error also appears on my second comnputer.

I just upgraded it from KDE itself via konsole. The only bad effect I experienced was that the quick launch icons next to the K - menu icon disappeared. I already had upgraded kde to 3.4 and the latest upgrade was to 4.3.1 and did not follow wiki guidelines - except on the other computer. On that the icons stayed - just as described in the wiki.
But about the problem itself: it seems odd to me that all the different repos that are hosting current are not in sync. Arch original repo is a bit slower for me than ftp.nluug.nl.

  • Pacman -Syu - unresolvable dependencies

When I do "pacman -Syu", I get this output:

    What's the problem?

you answer is right there whatever your installing depends on compiz-git, which conflicts with compiz-quinn-cvs, Either agree to replace it or force it with f

  • Pacman + -Syu = system freeze

I cannot post console output because system freeze so i cannot cut& paste. My pacman output is localized so my translation may not be 100% accurate
    After i pacman -Syu
i get a list of packages hit y
    they get downloaded
    then pacman is checking dependencies...done
    then
i get checking package integrity and
then i get something like(note translation may be not exact)
    memory security violated
    then my system freeze...
I tried to upp one package by pacman -S and it was done okay
Really do not know what is going on
edit: my box is preety up-to-date i did full upgrade 2-3 days ago. I'm running stock kernel form current ,i'm not using testing at all.

Well, run a memtest (there is on on the arch cd, boot it and run (memtest86)

  • Rc.sysinit screwed after pacman -Syu

Early today I made a pacman -Syu. There where only 2 packages to upgrade, and I went go on (I couldnt find those packages specified in pacman.log. It only says "Full system upgrade". How can a know those?) Couldnt find anything in the forums regarding this as well.
I do remember too, that one of those give and output after upgrading saying that inittab (I think) and rc.conf were installed as inittab.pacnew and rc.conf.pacnew
The thing is that when I booted again this afternoon, the booting process launched handful of errors on different lines of /etc/rc.sysinit, all of them of "command not found". Now the login prompt says "(none) login:", my keyboard layout changed to default, home is not mounted, etc...
    How can I debug this?
    Thanks in advance!

^ the same situation as above, and like you figured it to be Bash. (The segmentation fault errors don't show up when "quiet" is in the kernel boot line.) But with the hostname as "none" the filesystem is read-only; how did you downgrade it? Or rather, how does one downgrade a package on a mounted filesystem via the Arch Live CD such as /mnt/root? ... I guess a dirty use of "cp" would be required if not possible with pacman...

  • "FILESYSTEM CHECK FAILED" after pacman -Syu

    Hi all,
After a sucessfull 'pacman -Syu' (in which i didnt see any 'todo' messages but it did have a kernel upgrade) archlinux cannot start and i just get to a message similar talking about my root partition (ext3):
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
    ******************* FILESYSTEM CHECK FAILED *************
    * Please repair manually and reboot. Note that the root *
    * filesystem is currently mounted read-only. To remount *
    * it read-write type: mount -n -o remount,rw / *
    * When you exit the mantenance shel the system will *
    * reboot automatically. *
I restarted with a livecd and 'e2fscked' the partition (which btw found many errors that were corrected by it) but archlinux still gives me the same message. I have checked the partition again and again a thousand times but it always comes up clean, im even able to mount it from the different livecds i have tried and can read and create files on it so im pretty sure it is fine.
And so my question is, does anyone know why this is happening? How comes archlinux keeps seeing a problem in this partition when others dont? What am i doing wrong?
    An y answer appreciated.

    Hi again,
I have done some testing, maybe it will help.
After the failure message i put roots password and i got dropped to a shell, if i try to find the root partition (eg. ls /dev/sda) gives an error cause it sda doesnt exists.
If i edit rc.sysinit with a livecd and remove the fsck part i get a few diferent errors, some about partitions not being found and similar stuff. In my little knowledge of linux it ooks to me like it doesnt load the sata module or somethig...
I copy here the pacman.log file, i remember that the update was a huge one, around 400 Mbytes if i remember correctly:

  • Weird pacman -Syu problem

I got this error message early this morning and figured someone else would get it too and they'd post the problem and I could solve it through that thread but I've looked around and searched the forums and haven't seen it posted.
So, I ran a pacman -Syu this morning and got this:
    (3/3) checking for file conflicts [#####################] 100%
    error: could not prepare transaction
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
    rkhunter: /etc/rkhunter.conf exists in filesystem
I tried a couple of times and got that problem every time.  So I removed rkhunter, ran it again with no problems, deleted rkhunter.conf and installed rkhunter again and everything seems back to normal but I just thought it was odd.  I guess pacman wouldn't update rkhunter, only install it if it was not present (because I tried installing it again after the pacman -Syu and it complained about a rkhunter.conf already existing so I had to delete it).  Am I the only one who got this?

I got this issue too, but I have no clue wtf happened there.
This file wasn't owned by any packages, while it should have been owned by the rkhunter package.
I just removed it before upgrading, but without understanding why.

  • Had issue with pacman -Syu & util-linux-ng upgrade

This is mostly just a informational post in case anyone else has the same problem, or in case my problem is indicative of a pacman problem.... I hadn't been keeping on top of my upgrades for awhile, so that may be a factor.
I first upgraded pacman to the latest version, updated to use "core", then ran the full pacman -Syu .... it died halfway through because it tried to delete/move /mnt/cd and /mnt/cd was unable to be removed because it was mounted I believe... I tried to unmount it to continue, but it appears that util-linux-ng had been removed but not replaced at that point so I was missing my mount/umount commands (among others) (I'm making the assumption that whatever script was modifying /mnt/cd would have unmounted it for me if umount had been available)
here's the relevant bit of my pacman.log
(previous full sys update had been from around feb. of this year..)

seems like it's possibly unwise for pacman to remove packages it is replacing without immediately replacing them with the new one? Might it be better if replacements were treated as a single transaction or something?
thanks to bfinch for helping me figure out what was missing I was beginning to worry I'd been away so long umount had been replaced lol
    andrew.

The problem is you installed the 310 nvidia drivers, these require the nvidia-utils package version 310. But that version doesn't exist in the repositories because its already up to version 313. There is a way to do it but it will require a lot of work around's involving old packages manually. You will need the nvidia-utils 310 probably have to downgrade the xserver to xorg 1.13 and the linux kernel to 3.6. Then blacklist the packages in your pacman.conf so they are not upgraded.
Alternatiy you could just install the nvidia 313 drivers in the repositories and be done with it.

  • [SOLVED] Failed pacman -Syu system update

I tried update pacman -Syu and gave me this message:
error: failed to init transaction (unable to lock database)
if you're sure a package manager is not already
    running, you can remove /var/lib/pacman/db.lck
    so I changed db.lck to db.lck.bac
and when I pacman -syu   pacman gave me this mesage:
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
    initscripts: /etc/profile.d/locale.sh exists in filesystem
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
    any Ideals?

  • [SOLVED] X fails after pacman -Syu

After a year or so without upgrading (not recommended) I did a pacman -Syu; it took like ages 'cause I was on kernel 2.26, and now my arch is a complete mess: user modules don't load at boot, dhcpcd is not working so I don't have internet access and the X server is erratic too. Now I have to repair it step by step, and I think I should start with X.
Here is the startx/ xinit output:
    [root@HAL-9000 ~]# startx
