Page numbers after merging

Hi,
I have 2 documents that I am merging together using adobe SDK both have independent page numbers. Is there a way to re-distribute the page numbers so that it counts from 1 to however many pages are in the combined document rather than re-starting the number at the point where the documents were merged?

What are the page numbers? Just regular on-page text that you would want the API to recognise and edit? Or something else?

  • Page Numbering when merging a document

    Please help!
    I am presently working a trial copy of CS3 and trying to figure if I will convert from PM7.
    I publish a 12 page newsletter each month with a merge of name and address. The merge works but the page numbers continue after the first set of pages.
    In other words p1-p12 is the first set and p13-p25 is the second and so on, but I want to retain the original page numbering of p1-p12 for each merged set.
    Can anyone guide me to get this to work?

    No Problem. I'm presuming you don't have a merge-in-print-stream workflow available, so you need to make, ultimately, a 6,000 page document (as I said, this is not the ideal solution). That's the way Data Merge works in ID.
    Create a twelve page facing-pages doc to start, and add the fields you need for mailing addresses to the first or last page, and the rest of your fixed content wherever it belongs. Since all of the content is static except for the address info, you can actually build the entire document on master pages, if you wish, using a different master for each page, but it's pretty much six of one, half-dozen of the other. The advantage to putting the fields on the master page is you can update the data file. DON'T ADD AUTO PAGE NUMBERS. Put real numbers on pages 1-12, and they'll repeat along with the rest of the stuff.
    With the document set up this way, execute the merge (you can test it by doing a limited number of records). You should get a document with all pages repeating, in order, and the merged addresses.
    In my test run the last page of one set was shown separately from the following first page of the next set in the pages panel, and if you open the panel menu and uncheck the "allow document pages to shuffle" option, they will stay that way. It makes no difference for printing, but it is more intuitive to keep them broken apart.
    To print, use Print Booklet, and set up as two-up perfect bound with a signature size of 12. You could also do this with a 4, 8, or 16 page newsletter with a corresponding signature size count. Set the page size to landscape tabloid in the print options, and check the preview. Should be good to go. Go fishing while you wait for it to spool those 6,000 pages.
    The good news is that the same 12-page base document should work with a commercial Xerox or other high volume copier/printer that has a data-merge module in the RIP (though you might have to do the imposition yourself, and there are scripts for that that work just fine), so you have to do the same work either way.

  • Pages - Numbers deletes merge function!

    WHY did Numbers and Pages updates kill the merge function I use frequently? Guess I am going back to Word and Excel, and have many documents and spreadsheets to convert.  Very disappointing.

    We can't say why. Seems like a pretty foolish move. For now, if you were happy with iWork '09, just keep using it. I think it's interesting that when the Apple Community Specialists (Black Bar Posts) occasionally answer questions here, they have been advising that we go back to Pages - iWork '09 for the functionality we are missing.

  • Can Acrobat create a PDF using the same page numbers as FrameMaker?

    I'm using FrameMaker 10 on Windows 7 and Acrobat Pro 9. I know I can set the page numbers after I create the PDF (Advanced > Document Processing > Page Numbering), but is there any way to tell Acrobat (or Distiller) to do this automatically based on the page format set up in FrameMaker? Right now, the cover and inside cover have no page numbers, but I could assign them numbers and hide them. The TOC is lower case Roman numerals, and the rest of the book uses Arabic page numbering. Someone has asked whether we can have the page numbers be reflected in the page field so that when you enter page 10, it takes you to page 10 of the book (where 10 appears in the corner of the page), not the tenth page of the PDF, which might land you in the TOC.
    We produce PDFs as part of an automated system, which is why I can't mess with it after it's been produced.

    There is a FrameMaker plug-in that can do this:
    http://www.frameexpert.com/plugins/pagelabeler/index.htm
    Or, you might consider using PDFMark to add page labels.

  • How do I show page numbers using code?

    I posted this to the Scripting Forum three weeks ago and have had no response.  let's try here....
    I have an application that creates a PDF document in code from a Word document (using the Adobe PDF printer).   it then add a "signature page" using a pre-existing pdf document with signature fields and adds a certifying signature, and then displays the document to the user in an embedded Acrobat 9.1 control so that the user can sign the document.   What i want is that the document displays (and prints) page numbers.    I know how to add them in a Footer using Acrobat, but that is not an option here since the document is already certified when the user sees it so is 'locked' and anyway I would not want to rely on the user to do this.    So what i need to know is how using the COM interface of JavaScript I can set page numbers to be displayed.   I have tried using the javascript setPageLabel but have not made it work.
    I have also tried showing the page number on the signature page template but though it shows on that page it does not apply to the rest of the document and the page numbering is wrong (it always says 1 of 1 even if there are 15 pages before it in the final document).
    I would be grateful for any help,
    thanks,
    Jim

    IF the page numbers must display AND print - then they MUST be part of the page content.  In that case, you want to use the addWatermark JavaScript API.  There is a sample of it.  BUT you will need to add that BEFORE certification.
    If yo8u need to add the page numbers AFTER certification, then look at adding a text field or text annotation.  Again, samples in the SDK.

  • How do i start page numbering in the middle of a document in pages

    I need to begin page numbering after the initial pages in my thesis. I can get the page numbers to not appear for the first few pages but when it does begin (say page 4), it counts the previous pages.
    I there a way I can get pages (5.2) to count from page 4 onwards?
    So that page 4 will read "page 1", page 5 read "page 2" etc.....
    Thanks

    Have you divided the document by Inserting Section Breaks?
    Have you unchecked Continue from previous section in Section under Document?

  • Page Numbering Issues

    Hi,
    I have almost completed my first document using Indesign 4.0.5. I am obviously new to the software and am having trouble understanding how the page numbering works. (I did a search on page numbering in the forum and nothing came up - could be something up with the search.)
    My document is an 8.5"x11" brochure with 18 pages. I would like to begin the page numbers after the table of contents page or at least have these as visible page numbers starting at page 1. I am using absolute page numbering and have created a master spread with page numbers. Right now my page 1 is cover, page 2 is back of cover, page 3 is TOC page, page 4 is beginning of document. How can I make page 4 show page 1 and have the following pages update as page 2, 3, 4, etc.?
    Sorry for the elementary question.

    >I realize that means page 1 will now be on the left which is not typical but without adding an additional page or calling the TOC page 1 there is no way around that.
    If you can't rearrange the prelims, adding a blank verso page is the standard fix. Having the rectos even will be seen by most people as your error.
    >I always thought that one should start page 1 after the TOC but I am seeing more documents of this size starting page one on the cover (not visible) and the TOC page being page 3.
    I suspect it's the result of more and more people with no knowledge of typography and book design "setting" their own books simply because they think that five minutes playing with a DTP app (or even Word) makes them just as good as those who spent years learning the trade. Covers traditionally were not numbered, and the prelims were numbered with roman numerals. This protects you from having to renumber the whole book if your TOC or other preliminary matter ends up taking up more room than you had estimated. And the prelims don't automatically end with the TOC - each publication has to be treated individually.

  • Book Page Numbering Broken - InDesign 5.5

    I've been experiencing some very persistent and reproducible errors with book numbering in InDesign 5.5.
    Any feedback or ideas would be very welcome.
    Platform: OS X Lion (relatively clean install), InDesign CS5.5 7.5.2, no plugins on test environment
    Reproducible condition:
    Create a new book, enable automatic page numbering (continue from previous section).
    Create four new documents, to each add ten pages. Ensure automatic numbering is on.
    Add each of these documents to the book.
    Save the book.
    Update page numbering for the book.
    Result:
    Documents do not display correct book page numbers in the book palette. They show document, not book, relative numbering. Each document displays (1-10) in the book palette.
    When viewing the documents themselves, the first two document page number as expected: (1-10) & (11-20). This is also the result when exporting to PDF.
    However documents 3 & 4 in the book take page numbers (11-20) as well, as though they were each positioned second in the book.
    Tested:
    I've tried alternative automatic page numbering options for the book (start on odd/even) with no change. UPDATE: on a 20 document book there are some sections that seem to restart as "pairs", so number restarts randomly throughout the book. Same document and book numbering options as described here.
    I've tested with different numbers of documents, different page counts.
    I do update the page numbering after each attempt, no change.

    Note about large document test added.

    lilia@, thanks for the ideas, keep them coming...! Regarding these two, I've tried both already, no joy. Reordering document 3 to document 2 does result in it being re page numbered, but the "new" third document loses it's page numbers again (i.e. the book seems to be maintaining "pairs" of docs and reordering just changes which document is being re numbered).
    Have also added using the plus button on the panel, same. Thanks for the ideas though.
    Fwiw, this problem shows up on both existing books and new test books with fresh test docs. I've also tried the borderline voodoo method of exporting to IDML and reopening/saving the docs. Pretty much at my wits end. Well, a little more wit left, but not much.

  • Page Numbers Not Appearing in Data Merge Document?

    Hello, hopefully someone can help. I am pretty new to InDesign but learning a lot.  I am creating a member directory of about 200 pages (about 2800 records merged from .csv to InDesign 6). Everything is working fine with the merge, except generating the page numbers.  I tried adding page number at the bottom of the page to the master BEFORE merging. But if I do that, it greys out the "multiple records per page" option when trying to perform the Data Merge (using "Create merged Document").  So, I tried adding the page number to the A-master AFTER creating the merged document, but the page number is not appearing on any of the pages.  There must be a way to do this, can anyone help?
    (FYI - to generate the auto page numbers, I am going to the Type-Insert Special Character-Markers-Current Page Number, and placing that within a text field at the bottom of the page.  Thanks in advance. )

    Here is a screen shot.  I have placed it on the A-Master.  See Screenshot#1.  Screenshot #2 shows Page 70 with no page number (and no other pages have page numbers that I can see.  Thanks for your advice on fixing....
    Sorry, here is screenshot #2, (with personal details redacted but the records are there behind the grey boxes):

  • Merge issue : page numbering

    hi all,
    does anybody know how to add "total pages" after merging pdf documents
    adding "page <?>" works fine
    in other words , i need to add at the bottom of the merge document
    "page <?> from <total pages>"
    ---- code sample ---
    the code provide only page number
    // Initialize PDFDocMerger
    PDFDocMerger docMerger = new PDFDocMerger(inputStreams, outputStream);
    // Calls several methods to specify Page Number
    // Calling setPageNumberCoordinates() method is necessary toset Page Numbering
    // Please refer to javadoc for more information
    docMerger.setPageNumberCoordinates(300, 20);
    // If this method is not called, then the default font"(Helvetica, 8)" is used.
    docMerger.setPageNumberFontInfo("Courier", 8);
    // If this method is not called, then the default initial value "(1, 1)" is
    used.
    docMerger.setPageNumberValue(1, 1);
    // Merge PDF Documents and generates new PDF Document
    docMerger.mergePDFDocs();

  • Page numbers incorrect after conversion from Excel to pdf

    Page numbers incorrect after conversion from Excel to pdf
    ""This above link (thread:834599) is from a case back in 2011 that claims to solve this problem, but it does not solve this problem. I think that customer only cared about having continuous page numbering, not discrete page numbering per sheet.
    ========================
    I still have this issue in Acrobat XI and MS Office Professional Plus 2010. I keep upgrading to no avail. This regression has resulted in a huge time drain for me. If you fixed it, please explain how I can get my hands on the resolution.
    Previous versions of Excel and Adobe Acrobat enabled flexibility around the "Page #" of "Number of Pages" (Page &[Page] of &[Pages]) token, depending on context and usage. The "# of pages" token could represent EITHER the number of pages in the workbook OR the number of pages in the tab/sheet, depending on how you generated the PDF:
    You could select "Selected Sheets" and then select all or some of the individual sheets in the workbook, and the PDF would honor the discrete numbering of each of the sheets, so the first page of each sheet was p1 and the "# of pages" was the number of pages in the sheet; not the number of pages in the workbook; or
    You could select "Entire Workbook" and the PDF would honor continuous page numbers across all sheets, as a single document.
    Now, it only honors the total number of pages in the workbook, regardless of the method you use to publish to PDF: saving as PDF, printing to PDF, using "createPDF" from Acrobat plugin to Excel's menu ribbon; selecting all sheets, some sheets, or Entire Workbook; automatic First page number or "1" under Page Setup > Page> First page number. (This last option, btw, does restart every sheet at p1, but it hardly makes sense if the total number of pages is still the total number in the workbook instead of the number in the sheet.)
    I spent a lot of time trying each which way that the blog posts recommended and have tried this on multiple versions of Excel and Acrobat now.
    NONE of these time-consuming experiments gave me what I wanted.They all insist that "Page #" of "Number of Pages" (Page &[Page] of &[Pages]) is the total number of pages in the workbook or the total number of pages in the selected sheets combined.
    The numbering are correct in Excel Page Layout.
    The same issue happens when using LibreOffice calc. (Although, I never tested with Libre Office before, so I don't know that it ever worked).
    The workaround now is to create PDF for each spreadsheet one at a time, and then compile them using the Acrobat combine/binder feature. All alternatives are extremely time consuming and tedious. It used to be automatic. This is a major regression that has gone untreated for over a year now, maybe two years.
    My task takes infinitely more time to complete than it did with previous versions of Acrobat. That means that days are added to my project, when the functionality used to enable a quick pdf generation that was ready for review, now I have to do this very manual time-consuming set of steps to generate a draft. As the project has grown and more tabs are added, my pdf-generation task takes that much longer. We require lots of drafts. It used to be easy and fast. Now it is hard and time-consuming.
    In my opinion, the problem is not Excel; it is Acrobat because it was introduced with an upgrade in Acrobat, not an upgrade in Excel. The problem was introduced in Acrobat 9 or 10. Please provide a patch or add-on or something.

    If you are setting up the page numbers in Excel, the resulting PDF would display the the page numbers created in Excel. On Excel 2010 support page, (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/insert-and-remove-page-numbers-on-worksheets- HA010342619.aspx#BM2) is stated the following "tip" which indicates by default Excel 2010 starts numbering each tab with 1. Exel's workaround tip is below -
    Set a different number for the starting page
    Tip   To number all of the worksheet pages in a workbook sequentially, first add page numbers to all worksheets in a workbook, and then use the following procedure to begin the page number for each worksheet with the appropriate number. For example, if your workbook contains two worksheets that with both be printed as two pages, you would use this procedure to begin the page numbering for the second worksheet with the number 3.
    On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click the Dialog Box Launcher next to Page Setup.
    On the Page tab, in the First page number box, type the number that you want to use for the first page.
    Tip   To use the default numbering system, type Auto in the First page number box.
    Also helpful in the same section is the note on viewing page numbers. To see if the page numbering dilemma originates in Excel make sure you are using the Page Layout View see below:
    Hide All
    If you want numbers shown on pages when you print a worksheet  you can insert page numbers in the headers or footers of the worksheet pages. Page numbers that you insert are not displayed on the worksheet in Normal view — they are shown only in Page Layout view and on the printed pages.
    Overall it may be easier not to create the page numbers in Excel but instead create then in Acrobat using the Headers and Footers option in Acrobat.  I hope this helps - it sounds like a frustrating issue you are experiencing.

  • Merging PDF / Page Numbers / Acrobat SDK V9  & LiveCycle

    Hello everyone,
    I use Adobe LiveCycle to create forms, Visual Studio 2005 and the Acrobat SDK for the application I'm programming to fill in these forms. The application fills in the forms and merges them with no issues.
    The problem I have is that these pages have page numbers in the upper right. I use the Page N of M object on these forms in LiveCycle. PDF page numbers are filled in correctly when filling in the forms, but when I merge PDFs, the pages keep their original page numbers. I've looked at the Windows - Interapplication Communications even using templates to no avail.
    How can I merge these pdf's and have my program renumber these pages correctly and how can insert pages anywhere I want in the merge document?
    Below is the code I use to merge the PDF's. It was posted in a forum.
    Sub MergePDF(ByVal ThePath As String, ByVal outFileName As String)
    On Error GoTo serror
    Dim dPDDocMerge As New Acrobat.AcroPDDoc
    Dim dPDDoc As New Acrobat.AcroPDDoc
    Dim strFiles() As String
    Dim numPage As Integer
    Dim TotalPage As Integer
    Dim objThisFile As IO.FileInfo 'get FileInfo object for file string
    strFiles = System.IO.Directory.GetFiles(ThePath) ' Read in the file names
    Dim b As Boolean ' mostly for testing purposes... could use it for error 'checking to make sure that a file is really added before deleleting it...
    For i As Integer = 0 To strFiles.Length - 1 ' run through all the files in 'the directory
    objThisFile = New IO.FileInfo(strFiles(i)) ' Get the extension
    If objThisFile.Extension = ".pdf" Then ' Only add in PDFs
    If dPDDocMerge.GetFileName = "" Then ' check if it's the first file
    dPDDocMerge = New Acrobat.AcroPDDoc
    b = dPDDocMerge.Open(strFiles(i)) ' open first file
    TotalPage = dPDDocMerge.GetNumPages
    Else
    dPDDoc = New Acrobat.AcroPDDoc
    b = dPDDoc.Open(strFiles(i)) ' open other files
    numPage = dPDDocMerge.GetNumPages ' get the page count
    TotalPage += numPage
    b = dPDDocMerge.InsertPages(numPage - 1, dPDDoc, 0, dPDDoc.GetNumPages, _ False) ' Insert
    End If
    End If
    Next
    'b = dPDDocMerge.Save(1, ThePath & "\" & outFileName) ' save file
    b = dPDDocMerge.Save(1, ThePath & "\" & "\MyTest.PDF") ' save file
    b = dPDDocMerge.Close()
    Exit Sub
    serror:
    MsgBox(ErrorToString)
    End Sub
    Thanks for any code or advice.

    You can't merge LiveCycle forms this way :(. LC forms are NOT standard PDF files and can't be processed in the same way.

    It depends on the iLife (iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand) and iWork (Pages, Numbers and Keynote) versions you have.
    If you have got iLife '11 and iWork '09, you will be able to update the applications for free, but if you have got an older version, you will have to pay for them in the App Store
