Pagemaker to InDesign and a layout question

Granted, I'm not a professional production person but have used Pgmkr since 3.0 and have up converted to InDesign.
I have a small, 76 page book I created in Pagemaker. I now have it in InDesign. One of the little things I haven't been able to figure out is page numbering, without counting the covers. Right now, the front cover is page 1. Is there a way to do that or do I need to consider the covers as a separate document?
Thanks,
Ty Ford

> Right now, the front cover is page 1. Is there a way to do that...
Uh, do what? Make the front cover page 1? It's done, isn't it?
Or do you want to make another page Page 1? Right-click on that page in the Pages palette and choose Numbering and Section Options.
Your help files will tell you his. Also, forum etiquette is that you sate the version number of software you are asking about. We can't help you if you don't tell us what you have.

  • Charts - Display Top Percent and Legend Layout Questions

I have two pie charts with problems. In one, I've set the Options Legend Layout to Both, Top Percent to 85, and the legend displays the top 85 percent with a count for each group, but the total of the count column is still the grand total, not the total of the 85 percent.
In the second pie chart, I have the same settings, Top Percentage and Options Legend Layout Both, but the count displays as dollar values, eventhough the field is a date field.
Does anyone know how to correct these problems?
    Thanks!
    Robin

    hi Robin,
    you've got 2 options:
    a) you can use the cross-tab method that i mentioned before...a top N in the cross tab will show a percentage that is based on the whole record set as opposed to the N values...this is different than the chart legend percentage
    b) if you are willing to show the percentage that is based on the whole record set in the chart labels instead, you can  do the following...
if you have an On Change Of value of "country" and the summary is "sales", then create a new formula called "chart title" that has syntax similar to
    {Customer.Country} +  chr(10) + totext(PercentOfSum ({Customer.Last Year's Sales}, {Customer.Country}))
now change the chart On Change Of to your new formula. the percentage based on the whole record set will be shown in the chart labels.
    cheers,

  • Inporting Files From PageMaker to InDesign CS3

How do I import files from Microsoft PageMaker to InDesign and so that I dont lose any data.

You absolutely MUST have a go-by if you're going Pub to ID. The plugin works very well but two important things that get lost in translation are transparency and color spacing - Pub allows you to designate a singular color image as grayscale, and this image will appear as full color in InD. Transparent objects also come in at 100% opacity.

  • Book layout question due to lack of functionality in InDesign

I am a doctoral student (cancer cell biology) starting to write my dissertation (in Word 2007) and I'm using InDesign CS3 (5.0.4) for the layout (I refuse to layout figures and tables in Word... tried it... giant pain in the a$$).  My original plan was to create a Book in InDesign and have each chapter be a separate file.  Due to the bibliography software I need to use the Word file has to be a single file (see this thread for details).  InDesign cannot just Place a range of pages (it's seems to be all or nothing) and this creates a problem (see the previous thread).
The question I have, is it smart to break each chapter out into a separate file?  My thinking was that since I would be bringing in a fair number Photoshop and Illustrator files into each chapter it would be wise to keep the file size down (I'm not doing this on the best of computers, at least by graphic designer standards) and it would make rearranging a little easier (my mentor has a habit of changing his mind and chapter 3 could easily switch places with chapter 7).
This is my first book so any thoughts or advice you have would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Adrian.

Nah, it's just me.  My mentor wants paper output for the markup, the committee will take a PDF or paper and the university has (thankfully) instituted an electronic submission criteria.  The final product has to be a PDF to the school and I'll have some output to paper and bound for my mentor, my family (as a gift) and myself.
The two students before me did everything in Word and yeah you can make Word do it but I just don't hassle with it.  I make religious use of styles in Word (and only 4 styles at that... talked to a graphic designer who does books for a living "Keep the styles to minimum!!"... Done), so getting it into InDesign is cake.  Also, my mentor has a nasty of habit of constantly changing his mind and doing things like, "Can you move that picture about a centimeter to left, I just want a little space in there".  I have been through this with Word, it will do it but the voices in your head will start suggesting that you kill again (and nobody wants that).  I plan on doing my grants this way, manuscripts this way, everything.  Everybody (NIH, journals, other funding sources) requires a PDF now and some require rather optimized PDFs (people think I'm crazy but I swear there is a difference between the PDFs that InDesign outputs and the ones that my wife's Mac does--just using the built-in PDF renderer or some of the other PDF creators for Windows), so I just went ahead and went through a tutorial on VTC.com and then read a couple of books.  I wouldn't be able to layout a magazine but I can do grants, manuscripts, dissertations.

  • A workflow question relating to InDesign and LiveCycle

    Hi,
I have a layout that I've created in InDesign CS3. I export the PDF from InDesign and open it in LiveCycle v8. I then build my form fields and save the PDF. I have my nice form to distribute.
My question revolves around how to change the layout in InDesign and not lose all of the work done in LiveCycle. So let's say I want to change the background image for the form but not any of the form data. How can I export the new PDF from InDesign and merge it with the form fields from the original LiveCycle PDF?
    Many thanks,
    Ian P.

You imported the PDF using "Create an Interactive Form with Fixed Pages" since Replace Artwork is not available with "Create an Interactive Form with a Flowable Layout".
Please keep in mind, you can only replace artwork which has the same number of pages and identical page sizes as the original. If you change either of these in InDesign, you will have to copy/paste from one document to another.

  • Javascript adobe indesign to add/delete parts of pdf document and adjusting layout on pages

as a very new beginner i Adobe InDesign, and defining me as a dummie!, I'm making a interactiv pdf form for leaders. in this form, depending on what they check out in the first page, different parts in the pdf document has to be added/removed (not only buttoms at textfields, but also text in the form). and preferably, the layout should adopt to those changes. I have tried by exporting the file into Adobe Acrobat pro, using Tools/forms/addaction - add/hide element. Unfornately, that only removes textfiels, buttoms .... but not text. it doesn't either adjust layout. The alternativ would be to use the action import new pdf file, which I manage. Meanwhile, I Wonder how it is possible in a same document. Can somebody help me to succeed in making this interactiv form come true?! tx,

A PDF form is not appropriate for this. You'd have better luck with some
    sort of an HTML app.

  • Newbie layout question - positioning of content on a wedding invitation, and cursive font problem

    Hello,
Let me just state that I am a complete newbie to InDesign. I literally installed it for the first time ever the other night. I have a Creative Cloud subscription for the video editing utilities, but upon being tasked with creating a wedding invitation I realized I should give it a go. Can't be THAT hard, right?
I actually managed to squeeze something out that wasn't half bad (by my standards), but I have two remaining issues that I couldn't figure out so far. In addition, I really know nothing of the jargon. So please forgive me for my childlike descriptions of things that you guys probably have proper words for.
    1. Main page layout
The invitation (the actual paper) isn't a size that exists as a preset. It is 22cm x 16.4cm in landscape mode, and there is a vertical fold in the center, so that it can be folded into a little "magazine". Well, if you do that, and count the first page as page 1, then all of the stuff I'm making goes on page 3 - the right hand, "inside" page. When I created the document in InDesign, I got the dimensions in there, I told it to create a two column layout, and tried to emulate the size of the fold (only a couple of millimeters). On the screen it looks good, but when I print to my Canon MG8250, the whole body of text (it's all centered, like horrible web design of old) is obviously placed too far to the left. The left side of one centered line of text is 1.9cm from the left side of the page (the fold in the middle of the paper), while the right side of the same text is 3.5cm from the right side of the page. Another shorter line is 2.7cm from the left side and 4.4cm from the right side (all measurements somewhat approximate). All text boxes are made to be the same width as the "title safe" part of the page (i.e. the pink/purple guidelines that InDesign made for me), and the text is centered within them. Now, my basic math skills tells me "How about you move the right margin about 0.8cm to the right - that'll make it look right!" - however, is that the right way to go about this? Anyone care to weigh in to help me see the light?
    2. Centering of italic fonts
Two pieces of the text uses an italic font - the names of the bride and groom, and the names of the people the invitation is for. I liked the look of the "Kunstler Script" font, so I went with it. However, in comparison to the rest of the text (which uses the default Minion Pro for now), the italic text does not look centered at all. Of course, I see the problem knowing where the "center" actually is, because the baseline is much further to the left than the top of the letters. All I know as a layman is that InDesign and I have very different ideas about what centering actually means. Compared to the other text lines, the Kunstler Script lines appear to be much further to the right. I did another measurement. From the leftmost pixel of a name line to the leftmost pixel of the next line below, we have 0.7cm difference (the name line being wider). However, the rightmost pixel of the name line compared to the rightmost pixel of the line below is 1.5cm further to the right. Is it possible to center this in a fashion that makes it actually appear centered to a human?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

Can you post some screen shots to show us the centering problem?
as for the page layout, it may work better to set you page size to the folded size of your invitation. Just do the layout in order the way you would read it, and use print booklet to output it.
or, if you need to set it up on just two pages, do it like this:

  • InDesign CS3 - Vanilla Install - Question Marks All Over My Content

Yes, I'm still using InDesign CS3 on my MacBook Pro from 5 years ago. CS3 has worked like a charm and I've never had a problem with any files until this morning.
I've got a 120 page book, each page with images and text boxes, none of which are threaded. I opened my file this morning and all my content boxes: images and text have question marks on the top left corner.
I have no plug-ins. The installation is straight out of the box with the occasional updates, which stopped quite awhile ago.
The error that pops up when I place the cursor in a text box is: "31-40-TasksAssemble-Instal.incx" cannot be located.  Another error is: "31-40 TasksDirectly supe-1.incx cannot be located. I have no idea what these mean and when I did a Google search there were only 3 returns and they were from what appeared to be software pirate sites. I can't find a reference to this on the Adobe forums either.
I've saved under a different name, different file type and replaced the preferences, all to no avail. I think the application is behaving as though I've "checked out" the content, but I don't share my files with anyone and the file itself isn't on a network - there is nowhere to check out to, and the commands to check in is grayed out so I can't reverse the behavior.
I'm stumped and I have a deadline! Can anyone help??
    thank you!

No one has worked on or had access to this file but me. I'm on a network but I'm a Mac in a PC world and no one would even know how to find my hd, let alone do anything on it.
I have to believe it is related to my moving my entire project folder to an external hd (not just the file as I mentioned before) as a means of backup. I don't know why it would matter or what it could have done unless there are files created in the Library that are somehow related/linked to the stories.
I'm still searching the Adobe Forums for something related but all ID/IC related discussions relate to people actually using IC!
I've unlinked all of my content from IC and now I'll have to see what happens.
    [POSTSCRIPT]
I've been editing my layout most of the day and so far so good.
The oddity of each box asking for a link to InCopy, which has never been used, happened only after I dragged my project folder to an external hard drive as a precautionary backup. All InDesign files in both original and backup folder suffered this problem. I didn't dare open any other ID files for fear of corrupting them so I can't say how widespread this problem would have been.
I do not know why making a copy of a folder would have created this problem and I can't find any discussion thread that talks about it, much less sheds any light on the subject.
After unlinking all of the boxes from their non-existent "host file" the boxes remained intact complete with images and formatting. I saved often!

I am trying to use the trial creative cloud software on a PC windows 8.1 - I've downloaded and removed Photoshop CC 2014 two times - every time I open the file it says there is a problem and it shuts down and closes. I can open indesign and maybe other apps but photoshop no. Any ideas?

I don't think I can access the crash report? Excuse the ignorant questions I'm about to make am a relative tech novice.
Soo - as mentioned every time I open photoshop it crashes - it just says there's an error and the program will shut down and if there's a solution windows will notify me. Then nothing...
I've tried to look in photoshop files for the detailed crash report & the system event viewer but cannot find a file with those names. I've also looked in the windows files for files with those names but cannot find them either - so I don't know where to look.
    Any guidance would be great.

  • Fonts jagged in InDesign and PDF export

I've been troubleshooting this issue for days, with no success. I'm using IDCS6 on a MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion, and it probably happens with all fonts, but I've noticed it specifically with "Din mittelschrift" at a large pt. size and 100% magnification. It wouldn't be a terrible thing, since it's not noticeable in most of the document, but I'm trying to create a catalog of sorts (as a series of 2-page spreads) and the brand's name on the cover has the most obnoxiously rough edges - I can't send the PDF off to anyone in this condition.
I'm an experienced computer user but an InDesign novice, so I've been trying various things I've found online that successfully solved others' problems, without having a very clear idea of what many things in ID do. Reading a few Adobe tutorials didn't enable me to fix things, either.
I've seen others post that jagged-looking fonts can clear up when exported to a PDF, but that didn't work. When I export to a PDF, interactive or not, it appears jagged at 100% - though strangely enough, at 300% it looks fine.
I checked my ID display settings. It's jagged even at High Quality - and display settings in InDesign wouldn't affect the PDF, anyway.
I made sure the font was installed in the proper place (Library/Fonts), cleared my font cache, and restarted the computer.
I tried converting the text to outlines in InDesign.
I tried setting the opacity to 99.9%.
I changed the color of the text to a grey (240/240/240) to reduce the contrast in case that was an issue.
The rest of the document appears fine in InDesign and as a PDF. No extreme jagged edges or low-quality appearance.
Right now the document is intended to only be viewed on a screen, but since I'm unsure if I'll ever be asked to prepare it for printing I created it using ID's print layout. I've been avoiding converting it to a web layout because that would mean hours of reformatting, and I figure that fonts should render with smooth edges no matter what the layout is set as.
I think I've done more than what's listed above, but forgotten the specifics.
I'll try anything short of destroying the catalog and starting over.
    Thank you!

Can you take a screenshot of what this looks like and post it?
Also, I've noticed that sometimes weird crap will show up when you view something in Acrobat. Like you can see a line between the font and the stroke, but when you zoom way in, it looks fine. It will print fine as well. Just a display issue. Can you print it? When you print it does it look like crap?

  • Incopy link will not update in InDesign and XML Story files

So I have a couple of questions.
I work for a publisher and we have a standard InDesign to Incopy workflow. Recently we have started having issues with InCopy links. First some basic info would probably be helpful. We use Windows XP =(, and we are using InDesign and Incopy CS3. All of our files are on a server. When I or people on my team sometimes attempt to update Incopy links, they will simply not update. Then when we check the link it says that it is zero k in size and is pretty much fried, cannot open in Icopy or InDesign. Why this is so nasty is because if the file cannot be updated all the work in the story that was done in InCopy is lost. Then to make matters worse, if we unlink the incopy file sometimes when we go to save indesign completely crashes. Is this a permissions issue as our IT department is fairly ignorant about design workflows on servers and has been inconsistent about the permissions. Also these .xml files seem to be populating the folder where we keep our InDesign files, when we open them they have basic information on the story links. I have attempted to find out more info on these files but have had very little luck.
    Any info would be helpful.
    Thanks!

    I cannot import video files.

  • Adobe CS3 Suite -- How to Get InDesign and Acrobat Pro to Install?

I uninstalled and deactivated my Adobe CS3 Design Premium from my 1st gen Macbook (2006) and installed it on my 3rd gen Macbook Air (2011). When I installed CS3 using the original discs, InDesign and Acrobat did not install properly. How to fix?
    My questions:
    1. Got any ideas how to install InDesign and Acrobat Pro without uninstalling the whole CS3, running the cleaner tool, and reinstalling everything again? I tried to rerun the installer just for InDesign and Acrobat Pro but I got the same result -- no install.
    2. Installing CS3 takes forever -- at least several hours. Is it because I'm sending it over my wireless network? (I'm "sharing" the DVD drive on my other Macbook because my Air doesn't have one.)
    Thanks so much!!
(More background, in case it's useful -- before installing CS3, I had run the Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool to clean up the mess I made when I tried to migrate CS3 using Mac's migration assistant. I learned, thanks to this forum, that I couldn't use the Migration Assistant tomove CS3. I also found that the unistaller didn't transfer, so I manually deleted folders and then used the cleaner. It worked wel enough to allow me to install everything but InDesign and Acrobat Pro.)

Thanks Jeff (and Manish). I'm all for better reliability and a quicker installation.
This may seem like a dumb question, but how do I properly copy the CS3 install files onto a USB? Drag and drop everythng from the CD? Can I not just copy the files onto my desktop and install from there? That is what I thought Manish suggested, to install from the desktop.
I had tried this method. After copying the install files to the desktop, here's what happened: I clicked the setup application and it opened, but it immediately detected that I had CS3 installed and wouldn't let me go any further. Perhaps that was due to other problems resulting from use of the Migration Assistant.
Previously, when I used the install disk on the shared drive, I was able to open the setup and install the couple of CS3 programs that weren't installed the first time around. That installation attempt failed and led me here to my original post.
    Many thanks!

  • RAW Support in InDesign and Roundtrip to Lightroom

Julianne Kost suggested I suggest this feature when I spoke to her yesterday at PhotoPlus in NYC. I am currently designing wedding albums using InDesign and I like being able to roundtrip to Photoshop and back. But most images in the book are not brought into Photoshop and are instead edited in Lightroom where I tweek some things and then export to overwrite the current file in my layout. This requires me to click on the image, find its file number, search for it in Lightroom, make the edit and then re-export. Doable but time-consuming. If I could simply drag DNG files from LR into my layout and then use LR as the editor, it would make for an incredibly fast workflow. How about it?
Forgive me oh mighty mods but I am going to cross-post this in the Lightroom forum since I'm not sure which one is appropriate.

Rob, my reading of your site is that this plug-in copies settings from raw to jpeg, does it work the other way around as well?
    Rob Cole wrote:
One of the great things about the new 0-based defaults and linear tone curve is:
You can develop the jpegs now, in Lightroom, and then sync the settings to the raws later (e.g. using RawPlusJpeg), and provided you select a matching camera profile, they will look almost the same (white balance won't translate over, but everything else will, more or less). Beware lens corrections applied to the raws might alter the registration of precision local adjustments.
Note: I recommend shooting with ADL off in order for this to work better, and consider turning sharpening off in camera as well, and noise reduction and everything else to whatever extent is possible.
