Pages vs Word

I bought word when I got my MacBoook and when I get my iPad I am looking to get office on it. But I see pages is available on it. Is pages worth the price for both? What will I gain over word or what would I loose over word?

Pages is not perfect, but it is useful. Just as MsWord is not perfect but useful.
The question is for what you want to do, which of the two is either more useful or better value.
Pages excels at DTP, charts and spreadsheets within the document. The templates are in a completely different league to Word's.
Word excels in compatibility with PC users, inclusions such as WordArt and organisation charts. Its internal layout is more disorganised and despite its many features that are often hard to find and to use. Like most Microsoft products it works poorly with more Pro formats such as pdfs.
The price difference is enormous. Pages is a bargain compared with anything else out there.
Don't forget there are an enourmous number of other alternatives out there, it is not a 2 horse race.

I got Office for $99 didnt think it was to bad but I will buy Pages and all the others as i need it. waiting for a iTunes gift card to go on sale first.

If you have upgraded to Mountain Lion, Save As… has returned to the File menu when you hold down the Option/alt key. But you don't really "save" as other file types, you translate & export as Word or RTF or text or PDF & that is easily done by going to File > Export or Share > Export.
Also, please do us all a favor & don't use all capitals in your posts, either the body of the post or the title. All caps is the internet equivalent of shouting & is very hard to read.

  • How can I open AppleWorks 6 files using Pages or Word?

I am currently running Mac OS X v.10.4.11, but I am turning in my old mac for a new one in about a week. Almost all of my important files are AppleWorks 6 files and my new mac will not have this program since it has been replaced with Pages. I currently have AppleWorks 6, Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac, and Pages 08 on my old mac. I am unsure as to what applications I will have on my new mac (I am a teacher and the macs are school computers so I do not have control over the software), but I think it will have both Word 2008 and Pages 08 or 09. So far I have not had any luck opening my AppleWorks files in Pages or Word. I have been able to copy and paste the AppleWorks files into Pages (they are mostly Draw documents, not simple word processing), but they become an image so I cannot edit the content. I need to be able to edit my documents on my new computer and do not have time to open each AppleWorks file and copy it to Pages anyway. Any suggestions to help me with this compatibility problem?

AppleWorks will run fine on your new Mac, though if you transfer it from the old one you should delete it from there to stay within the terms of the licence. You would need to copy the Appleworks folder over, not just the application.
Pages can open Appleworks 6 word processing documents, Numbers can open Appleworks 6 spreadsheets. It's possible to open AW Draw documents in Eazydraw, or in Pages through a workaround. Nothing will open AW Database documents.
I have written a detailed article going into the process of migrating from Appleworks, including the workaround for Draw>Pages:

  • How to get number of pages in word document

I am developing an OCR application where I need to get number of pages of word documents. I am currently assuming that each page consists of 46 lines but some how, I am not getting convinced with this logic. Is there any simplest way to get this information?
Let me tell you that in the OCR system I am converting tiff iamges to .txt file and again reading txt file and counting number of pages based on number of lines.
    regards,
    Ranjan

The number of pages depends on the font size, length of each line and any page break in between.
You could just say, one page per 46 lines, it depends on how accurate you must be.
Why not count the number of pages you scanned?

  • Since OS X Yosemite upgrade, cannot share document from pages in word format. Therefore document cannot be opened by non apple user.  How do I get around this please?

Since the OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 update to my iMac (27 inch, Mid 2010) , I can no longer "share" a document from Pages in word format via email.  It can be sent as an att but then as "Pages"  cannot be accessed by a non apple receiver.  Please what is the answer, the old method was fast, simple and efficient.
Out of my depth appreciate some help.

Are you using the File > Export function? It will deposit a Word document onto your desktop (or any folder you choose) and then you can attach it to your email.

Did you click on the little triangle? Did you select one of the document files before pressing COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window? If the panel is closed it looks like this:
If you then click on that little triangle gadget you get this:
A temporary solution is to CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the document file, navigate to the Open With item, and select from the sub-menu.
The first method makes the association permanent. This method only applies to the currently selected document.

But, there are a few things you can try:
Clear the browser cache and try again.
Try a different web browser (see System requirements | Acrobat.com)
Make sure that there are no firewall/proxy settings that could be limiting your access to the Intenet.
Try those, and let us know how it goes.

  • Working with Pages and Word-questions!

NOTE: Sorry for the similarity of this to my post a few minutes ago titled "Which do I use, Pages or Word)? I learned some things through experimentation and have created subtler and more challenging questions for you.
Help me out here (please). I am now working with Pages, sharing documents with dozens of behind the times colleagues who are using some old program called "Word." It's my job to work with these people and I'm trying to make it as easy for everyone as possible.
Do I have this right? When I create a document (or open an old Word document into pages), in order to be able to share it with people, I save it, and check the box to save a copy in Word format. Then when I send my documents, it works like a charm. Yes?
If I start by opening a Word document, and every time I save I check "save copy to Word," I end up with only one document, no version in Pages. If I start with a Pages document, or save without checking the box, I end up with two separate versions of the document (like when I create a pdf)? It appears that if I I want to keep working in the Word format, every time I save it will give me a dialog box and make me check the box (and possibly select my location). This is cumbersome since I am now in the habit of saving often (you learn that when you work with Word for the Mac for any period of time--bomb, bomb, bomb). So, an I correct in assuming that if I want to save regularly, I really have to work in Pages, and then be scrupulous about saving into Word when I'm done for the day, or just before I send? It's sort of a pain in the butt, although I can learn to do it--I just want to make sure I'm not missing something here. Also, is there an autosave function so I don't have to rely on my discipline? Or does it never ever bomb?
What happens if I open the Word version and make changes to it? Do I have to do something differently to make sure I have both versions identical? Am I better off always to open the Pages document to work on, then save and send?
Do I always then have two versions of the same document (like I would if I did this same thing with pdf)?
How do I make sure that the Word version is always up to date since that is the one I am sending to colleagues? Do I always have to save and check the box, and then select the correct document to send?
I do see that when sending a single document I can easily send it while I am in the document itself. When I do this, selecting to send it as a Word document (or a pdf for that matter), will it send the version I most recently saved, or the version that is on my screen (if I forgot to save changes)?
FInally, I'd be open to any tips from people working regularly with others who must use Word. I want it to work as simply as possible, but want to set up some good habits from the beginning.
Finally, finally, have you had problems with compatibility. I have to say that there have been very few Word document yet that I've opened that I haven't gotten a message that says that Pages doesn't support some aspect of the document and formatting is removed, or spacing is different, etc. The most common is that "paragraph borders operate differently so all borders except outside borders have been removed." I'm a bit nervous about this--will I be getting documents from others that I can't trust? Will I have to ask them to send a pdf as well so I can confirm that I got it right? Can anyone ease my mind? Or am I living in reality?
    Thanks a million!

Well yes they are not the same program so there will be differences.
For example Pages only allows a border all the way around a paragraph with few options on the style of line, which is why you got the warning.
A workflow would consist of you doing your work in Pages however you like it and when you have finished and saved, making a Word copy which you despatch to your colleagues and then throw away.
Of course this is more cumbersome than sticking with MsWord which is another option. You choose. It comes down to whether or not you have to tightly conform and interact with Word users. Maybe Pages is not for you, or even NeoOfffice which is a clone of MsOffice.
Test it. If it works and you like it stick with whatever solution works for you.

  • Convert pdf files into wiki pages, and export wiki pages as word and pdf files

I am working on an enterprise wiki site collection inside my SharePoint server 2013. And there was a requirement to automatically generate wiki pages from word documents. As I read that the built-in service within SharePoint does not support importing the
pictures within the word documents. So I looked into 3rd party tools and I settle on the “Kaboodle Word to Wiki” link
which will manage to convert word docs into wiki pages, with only minor layout problems.
But I want to know if there are additional tools which support the following:-

I haven't seen any third party tool converting pdf files to SharePoint wiki pages and and exporting SharePoint wiki pages into pdf and word files.
You need to write custom feature where you can use iTextSharp pdf for pdf conversion. you can also check below blog which shows the export of SharePoint Wiki to Word/PDF without 3rd party tools:

  • Trying to e-mail a 'page' but it claims it is 60MB size if sent as page or word document. By PDF it is 350KB?

I have created two pages of Newsletter. Unfortunately when I try to e-mail it to a friend the attachment says the size is 62MB if I share it using Pages or Word. However if I e-mail using PDF format the attchment is 355KB only. What is wrong?

In Pages, there are two menu items: Format/Image/Reduce Image File Size and File/Reduce File Size. If you have some very large images that you have shrunk down or masked, your Pages file still has the original large images as part of the file.  The first menu item reduces the size of a selected image, the other reduces the size of all images.  But once you've done it, you can't go back (or maybe with Revert Document you can).  I don't know exactly how this works in the latest version of Pages, whether it keeps the previous version and the file still remains huge or whether it works as advertised as it did in the older versions.  Duplicate your file then try it and see what happens.
I assume Pages does the resizing and cropping when creating a PDF version of your document, which is why it is a much smaller file.

  • Pages reformats Word documents

I'm going to be purchasing a new MacBook Pro in the next few weeks, so I stopped by the Apple Store at The Grove to check whether Pages reformats Word .docs.  Upon importing one of my three archaeological research papers, which consist of text and hundreds of images, Pages reformatted the entire document.  Short of going through and resizing the images, is there a way of importing a Word .doc into Pages so it does not reformat my documents, as I'd really like to dump Word.

Tom, thanks for the reply.  Tried the 'Fresh' & 'Stable' versions of Open/LibreOffice, and both reformated my documents almost as much if not more so than 'Pages', on top of which the images are washed out, as compared to how they look in 'Word'.  I also couldn't find a way to print them as compressed .pdf files in Open/LibreOffice as I can in 'Word'.  For example, my 1st paper 'Orthostat, the Mound of the Hostages' is 24.5mb 'Word' .doc.  When printed as a .pdf, it's 38.7mb, whereas the compressed .pdf is 3.6mb, although the labeling on some of the images in the compressed files are slightly blurry.  The reason for compressing the files, is that no one wants to download a 146.2mb document, as in the case of my 3rd paper 'Petroglyphs, the Art of Ancient Landscapes', which when compressed is only 12.6mb.
You can see what I'm referring to as far as the images are concerned by viewing my papers on Academia.edu.
    https://independent.academia.edu/SeanMoriarty
That being said, it's quite apparent I'm going to have to stick with 'Word' 2008, which I'm hoping is compatible with 'Mavericks' and Apple's next version of OS 10, 'Yosemite', otherwise I'm going to have to shell out another $100+ for Office 2011.

  • Save a JSF page as word document

    Hi All,
I have a simple JSF page with some generated content. In that page, there is a button as "save as word". When the link is clicked , i need the save dialog to appear and prompt the user to save the content in the JSP page as word document. How can i do this in JSF.
Please guide me in this regard.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Pals

I don't think this is easily achieveable, if even possible
A web page as you see it is the result of a web browser rendering the html in its own way. Different browsers can display the same html differently. So what gets displayed to the user is dependent on their browser.. In order to produce an image of what they see, you would need to somehow render the image differently depending on the value of the User-Agent header.
Maybe by hacking around the hotjava browser you could start to do something like this, but I'd imagine it would be quite messy and again different to what the user views.
