Pages with Word Perfect

Does anyone know if Pages will open word perfect documents or if word perfect can open Pages documents?

is OpenOffice able to save as Pages format ?
I was unable to find such an item in its Save As menu
Not too surprising as it is dropping accented chars from ASCII text files.

  • Pages with word templates

I'm writing my thesis and my school uses a MS Word template... has anyone had experience with using Word templates in Pages?  Will it be a nightmare or relatively easy -I don't want to spend hours and hours reformatting.  Thanks for your feedback.

Pages should open the Word template although you might have to change the extension from .dot to .doc. But, as ffiti said, formatting is often off. But there are other options besides Office for Mac. TextEdit that comes with your Mac can open Word files & there are the Office clones such as LibreOffice or NeoOffice that are free.

  • Anybody use Word Perfect?  How does 'Pages' compare?

For anyone who wants to cut to the quick, just read the question....the last paragraph.
I need some comfort. It's probably normal to get frustrated with a new Word Processing program like 'Pages' after only 2 days of using it so I'm willing to be patient, but I have a general question, which actually appears in the Title of this post.
I've used Word Perfect on my non-Mac computers for 20 years and although the program is without equal in it's sophistication and ease of use (IMO), I do believe it caused some big problems for other programs on my computer (incompatibility problems with other software). I've wanted an iMac for a long time just to get rid of all the problem I had with those other computers, thinking I'd be rid of WordPerfect, which I blamed for many of the problems. I wanted a fresh, clean start, so I sure don't want to mess up my 2 day-old iMac by loading up a word-processor like WordPerfect again....that'll just mess everything up again.
But I have mixed emotions. After my past experience with Word Perfect, it's just hard for me to believe that the WP people actually got rid of all their bugs, and wouldn't inadvertently stick them all into an Apple product. I'm paranoid, I know. I'm asking this question because word-processing is the most important thing to me in using a computer and I found WordPerfect to be perfect, as a word-processor, that is.
I'm certainly willing to give 'Pages' a fair try, and hope it works out for me. But, is there anyone here who uses WordPerfect on their Mac (and with which OS) and does it cause you any problems? Also, in your opinion how does it compare with 'Pages'?

I was an avid WP user (DOS, AtariST, and Mac versions) for years and I was a beta tester for the Atari and Mac versions. I was never all that impressed with the Windows versions. When the program was sold to Novel support and quality became uneven and after Novel sold it to Corel, well, let's let sleeping dogs lie, eh?
Pages isn't WP - it is a consumer word processor and desktop publishing program. Still it is quite powerful and easy to use...once you accept its conventions. That is a sticking point for a lot of people. With OS X, Apple has taken the toolbar and adapted it to its own purpose. Unlike some programs that attempt to put every command in toolbars, Apple prefers to target a smaller number and allow the user some ability to custom it. Apple has also adopted the idea of palettes - one palette actually. The inspector. In OS X the inspector is used to take commands that might be buried in the menu hierarchy and puts them out front. With Pages, like many OS X programs, getting to know the Inspector is key to using Pages.
As I said, Pages isn't WP or MS Word. That's good and bad. The good is that the program is cleaner and easier to learn. It also means that lots of features you might consider important are missing. You should have a demo version of iWork on your new iMac and you have 30 days to use it before you have to decide to keep it or ditch it.

  • Printing Envelope using Word Perfect

    Officejet Pro 8000 Wireless -
Operating Sys - Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit
envelope feed is centered in the paper tray.  Word Perfect will print envelopes only if fed down the right side of the paper tray.  HP claims there is a problem with Word Perfect and Corel claims the problem is in the print driver. I've never had a printer before that would work with only Microsoft Word. I've never had this problem before purchasing this printer.

    Hi,
Here are the steps for printing in word perfect :
    Printing envelopes in Word Perfect
In WordPerfect, the Print Driver and Envelope Format Settings must match for the envelope to print properly. The Following steps show how to set up envelope printing in WordPerfect 7.0; other versions of WordPerfect follow similar if not identical routines.
Set the Print Driver settings in the Printer Folder to print in Landscape mode. In Windows 95 and 98, right-click the print driver icon and select Properties. Then go to the Paper section. In Windows NT, double click the print driver icon and go to Document Defaults under Printer. Go to the Features section and make the change.
From within WordPerfect, click Format and Envelopes.
Go to Envelope definitions to select the size.
To verify the settings, or if the desired envelope size is not present, click Create New Definition.
Check the list of available envelope sizes; if the desired envelope size is not present, select the last choice: User Defined Size.
Make sure the font orientation is set to Rotated and paper feed is set to Short Edge.
Print a test envelope to make sure all of the settings are correct. These settings will be the default the next time you enter WordPerfect’s envelope wizard.

  • Transferring files from Word Perfect to anything readable on my iMac

I was wondering if anyone knew how I can take my .wpd files from my old computer with Word Perfect, and get them to appear in anything readable on my iMac. I have Microsoft Word, and the other Apple word processing software but I can't make my old files connect up at all. I'm sure this is less of an "Apple thing" and more a "I'm an idiot thing" however everything I've tried has not worked.

    Hi,
First of all, I assume that you have found a way of transferring the files from the old computer (PC) to your iMac. For example, on a CD or a USB flash drive. If not, please post back.
Generally speaking, when trying to open files from a Windows computer on a Mac, do not just double-click on them. Instead, open from within a program.
If you do have access to the old computer and the WordPerfect program, you could re-save the files to a file format understandable by your new applications. Look through the Save as dialogue on the old and the Open dialogue on the new computer to find a common denominator.
Alternatively, have you tried NeoOffice? Here is a list of file formats.
Otherwise, you may want to have a look at the commercial conversion utility MacLinkPlus and its supported formats.

  • My word perfect documents have been changed to .doc but I can't open them in pages. ugh!

my word perfect documents have been changed to .doc but I can't open them in pages. ugh!
they are wpd files from around 2001-2003 that my Dad emailed me and on a PC was easy to simply relabel as .doc but despite this I cannot open in pages or convert to pages.
    Please can you help me?
    cheers!
    DT

In fairness to Pages, only apps that can handle Word Perfect docs of that vintage can open them, either.  W
As Viking said, changing the extension does nothing to the file structure & metadata of the document.  At one time Mac people didn't bother with the extensions, because they were simply a visible indicator of the app that made them, and the Mac would get that information from the file itself.
Since you changed the extensions, some Windows apps may still use those extensions to tell them the file source. When they try to open a .wpd file as if it were a .doc file, they will get very confused.
You can try to open the files by using the Menu> Open command, with the setting of "all files."  IF and only if the app can handle .wpd files, then maybe it will open it & ignore the extension.

I cannot send a Pages document, Word via email if the doc contains a picture.  If I email a Pages doc without a pic in Word format or pdf with a pic it with go through to sender?  Not sure why Pages won't send Word doc with a picture in it.  I check the security on the email recipient and the email doesn't get blocked or throw in the junk box?
    thanks,

If you have upgraded to Mountain Lion, Save As… has returned to the File menu when you hold down the Option/alt key. But you don't really "save" as other file types, you translate & export as Word or RTF or text or PDF & that is easily done by going to File > Export or Share > Export.
Also, please do us all a favor & don't use all capitals in your posts, either the body of the post or the title. All caps is the internet equivalent of shouting & is very hard to read.

  • Import multiple Word docs to multiple pages with same master page?

Hi, I should start by saying I have no scripting experience.  However, I am wondering if there is a simple script available for the following issue:
I have set up a master page with three linked text boxes. Right now, I use Cmd+D to select a word file, and then Shift+click in the first box to place the text on the page. But I have 125 pages that are exactly the same layout, just different Word files to be imported. I could repeat this process 125 times, but I am wondering if there is a way to tell InDesign to create 125 pages using Master Page X and import one file for each?
    I am using InDesign CS5 v 7.0.4 on Mac OSX Snow Leopard v 10.6.7
Thank in advance for any help you can offer,
    NW

I was able to import the word documents as long as there was only one text frame on the master page. However, when I created multiple text frames (the text in the word document needs to flow from frame 1 to frame 2), it always imported into frame 2 and skipped frame 1. In case it is helpful to understand what I mean, I attach two screenshots. The first (sans text) is the master page, and the second is Page 1 after running the script. I added the labels Frame 1 and Frame 2 to Page 1, not the Master, because otherwise the text gets imported into the frame with the words "Frame 2". I suspect I have to label the frames in InDesign and then add something to the script that says insert into the Frame 1, but I'm not sure how to do that.
It wasn't clear from your narrative in June that the text frames were linked, and that the text needed to flow between frames.
The script, as implemented, only overrides one text frame, (textFrames[0],  which is the top-most text frame in the stacking order), and then places the text in it. Clearly that's not correct for your scenario.
You mention 3 frames but only mention flowing between 2 frames.
Anyhow, it sounds like you want the script to override all 3 text frames, and then to place in the first textframe.
The first is easy, the question is really what should happen when there are more than 3 text frames -- should it override all text frames, or only some. You could specify which ones with a Script Label, or you could do something more clever. For the moment, let's just override all text frames.
Then you have to specify which one to place into. You could just select the frame you want and Arrange > Bring To Front. Or we could specify frames[2], which should be the 3rd-from-the-top (after frames[0] and frames[1]). I'll do the latter, but feel free to keep the script the same and do the former:
    var
        d=app.activeDocument,
        p=d.pages,
        i, frames;
    for (i=0; i<p.length; i++) {
        frames = p[i].appliedMaster.textFrames.everyItem().override(p[i]);
        frames[2].place(new File("/path/to/page"+p[i].name+".doc"));

I have created an 100 page booklet in Pages, with many photographs, and much written word, can I export it to ePub, and make an electronic book, because it says that "Note: The Pages document must have been created using a word processing template"?....
Basically what I want to do is publish the document into both an eDocument, and a hard copy document. What is the best way to do this?

No Peter, this statement came right off the Apple ePub statement when outlining how to use ePub. the full context is:

ePub is an open ebook standard produced by the International Digital Publishing Forum. Pages ’09 lets you export your documents in ePub format for reading with iBooks on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
iBooks supports both ePub and PDF file formats, and you can export both from Pages.
When to use ePub or PDF
Use ePub when text is the most important part of your document, for example when you create a book, a report, a paper, a thesis, or classroom reading material.

Creating an ePub Document to Read in iBooks
You can export any Pages word processing document to the ePub file format for reading in an ePub reader, such as the iBooks application on the iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Documents created in page layout templates can’t be exported to the ePub format.
Documents exported to ePub format will look different than their Pages counterparts. If you want to get the best document fidelity between the Pages and ePub formats, style your Pages document with paragraph styles and other formatting attributes allowed in an ePub file. A sample document is provided on the Apple Support site that features styles and guidelines to help you create a Pages document that’s optimized for export to the ePub file format, which you can use as a template or a guide. To learn more about using paragraph styles in Pages, see the topics under the heading “Working with Styles” in the Pages built-in help.
To read your ePub document in iBooks on your mobile device, you must transfer the ePub file that you create onto your device.
To use the “ePub Best Practices” sample documentTo learn more about using the ePub format and get a better feel for how a Pages document might appear as a book in iBooks, it’s a good idea to download the “ePub Best Practices” sample document. After reading the guidelines and instructions within the document, you can use it as a template to create your own document. You can also import the styles from the sample document into a new document you create.
Download the “ePub Best Practices” sample document at the following web address:
    http://images.apple.com/support/pages/docs/ePub_Best_Practices_EN.zip
Do either of the following:Use the sample document as a template.Import the paragraph styles from the sample document into a new or existing Pages document.
Export the document you create to ePub format to see how it looks in iBooks.
Preparing an existing Pages document for export to ePub format
Documents exported to the ePub format automatically appear with page breaks before every chapter. A table of contents is automatically generated, which allows readers to jump quickly to any chapter title, heading, or subheading in the book. In order to create a meaningful table of contents, it’s important to apply appropriate styles within your document. The ePub reader uses the paragraph styles to determine which items should appear in the table of contents for your book.
Note: The Pages document must have been created using a word processing template.

  • Working with Pages and Word-questions!

NOTE: Sorry for the similarity of this to my post a few minutes ago titled "Which do I use, Pages or Word)? I learned some things through experimentation and have created subtler and more challenging questions for you.
Help me out here (please). I am now working with Pages, sharing documents with dozens of behind the times colleagues who are using some old program called "Word." It's my job to work with these people and I'm trying to make it as easy for everyone as possible.
Do I have this right? When I create a document (or open an old Word document into pages), in order to be able to share it with people, I save it, and check the box to save a copy in Word format. Then when I send my documents, it works like a charm. Yes?
If I start by opening a Word document, and every time I save I check "save copy to Word," I end up with only one document, no version in Pages. If I start with a Pages document, or save without checking the box, I end up with two separate versions of the document (like when I create a pdf)? It appears that if I I want to keep working in the Word format, every time I save it will give me a dialog box and make me check the box (and possibly select my location). This is cumbersome since I am now in the habit of saving often (you learn that when you work with Word for the Mac for any period of time--bomb, bomb, bomb). So, an I correct in assuming that if I want to save regularly, I really have to work in Pages, and then be scrupulous about saving into Word when I'm done for the day, or just before I send? It's sort of a pain in the butt, although I can learn to do it--I just want to make sure I'm not missing something here. Also, is there an autosave function so I don't have to rely on my discipline? Or does it never ever bomb?
What happens if I open the Word version and make changes to it? Do I have to do something differently to make sure I have both versions identical? Am I better off always to open the Pages document to work on, then save and send?
Do I always then have two versions of the same document (like I would if I did this same thing with pdf)?
How do I make sure that the Word version is always up to date since that is the one I am sending to colleagues? Do I always have to save and check the box, and then select the correct document to send?
I do see that when sending a single document I can easily send it while I am in the document itself. When I do this, selecting to send it as a Word document (or a pdf for that matter), will it send the version I most recently saved, or the version that is on my screen (if I forgot to save changes)?
FInally, I'd be open to any tips from people working regularly with others who must use Word. I want it to work as simply as possible, but want to set up some good habits from the beginning.
Finally, finally, have you had problems with compatibility. I have to say that there have been very few Word document yet that I've opened that I haven't gotten a message that says that Pages doesn't support some aspect of the document and formatting is removed, or spacing is different, etc. The most common is that "paragraph borders operate differently so all borders except outside borders have been removed." I'm a bit nervous about this--will I be getting documents from others that I can't trust? Will I have to ask them to send a pdf as well so I can confirm that I got it right? Can anyone ease my mind? Or am I living in reality?
    Thanks a million!

Well yes they are not the same program so there will be differences.
For example Pages only allows a border all the way around a paragraph with few options on the style of line, which is why you got the warning.
A workflow would consist of you doing your work in Pages however you like it and when you have finished and saved, making a Word copy which you despatch to your colleagues and then throw away.
Of course this is more cumbersome than sticking with MsWord which is another option. You choose. It comes down to whether or not you have to tightly conform and interact with Word users. Maybe Pages is not for you, or even NeoOfffice which is a clone of MsOffice.
Test it. If it works and you like it stick with whatever solution works for you.

  • Importing MS Word into PDF adds extra page with document info

I am still evaluating Acrobat Pro, including Life Cycle Designer to create Forms, currently testing converting existing forms made in MS Word to PDF. There is someting that I do not know how to resolve is when I import files from MS Word, an extra page with details info about the document is copied as well. It contains info such as number of pages, author, date of creation etc....20 lines of info.
This becomes akward when inserting the document into an existing pdf...or just create a new form from the Word document....adds the extra page ..
Is there a setup somewhere that I could modify to not have the extra info? or how do I delete it? I try to select the text but cannot (within life cycle)
    Thank you

If you are importing into Designer, you should ask in that forum. If in Acrobat, then you might try printing the WORD document to a PDF first and importing the PDF. However, with Acrobat you will not get the form fields that you are preserving with Designer.

  • How to share pages template with word users?

I made a pages template with placeholder text and need word users to fill in the placeholders, how do I save this template to share it with word users?

Thank you for your quick response!
The template has colored shapes, therefore upon export it changes the formatting and nothing lines up-of course!
When I export it and open it in on my old macbook(OSX10.6.8) in word for mac 2004 it opens as a document not a template.  The export is as a document, not a template, maybe it is not possible-ugh!

  • Pages compatible with word?

hi. I'm just wondering if pages is compatible with word. Example- if I type a document on a PC in word, save it to a flash drive, and then plug the flash drive into my macbook at home, can I open the document seamlessly in pages? A while ago, I tried typing a document in the mac version of word, and then opened it on a PC with word, and I got either strange symbols instead of letters or an underscore between every letter in the document. Will this happen between word and pages?

You cannot open it seamlessly in the sense that you just open it, make some modifications, save it, make some more modifications, save it again and then bring it back to the PC. To bring it back to the PC you have to go through a number of dialog steps and give the file a new name.
However, the import of Word documents to Pages works fine for almost all documents, and the export it decent.
You will most probably not encounter the problems you describe above, if the Word documents come from a PC with Office XP, Office 2000 or Office 2003.
