Panning during recording and editing

Good Day,
I want my video to have sections similar to Camtasia's pan and zoom option. I have tried insert --> standard objects --> zoom area, but it seems a bit cumbersome. I want the whole screen to focus on a section of a screen following the mouse. I am recording a demonstration type video.
1) During recording, there is a drop down box for panning following the mouse, but the drop down arrow is faded out and cannot be selected. How can I select this option? I attempted to use hotkeys, but that did not work. Why might that be? It was not a key used for anything else in the program I was capturing.
2) During editing, is there a way to ask it to pan according to the mouse location?
3) Is zoom area my only option after recording? If I use it, everything is very pixellated. Is there any way to avoid the distortion of the image?
Thanks for your help!

Hi there
Sounds like you are using Full Motion capture. While Captivate has made improvements in this area it comes nowhere close to Camtasia. So if you really want full motion, Camtasia is your better bet.
Captivate works best with the slide-by-slide capture. In this mode you can pan, but it's far from graceful.
Personally, I blend Camtasia output with Captivate. Camtasia doesn't offer the ability to automatically create Text Captions as Captivate does. Building Simulations ins't nearly as easy in that tool either.
As I said, I see room in anyone's toolbox for both. You may wish to also try Jing. Perhaps even blend Jing output with Captivate. Jing is similar to Camtasia but limited to total time of five minutes I believe.
Hopefully this helps... Rick

  • Is there and ipad app that allows you to record and edit audio, but can record in the background?  This would be to record voiceover auditions/podcasts while reading a script

Hi wondering if anyone might be able to help me out.  I am an audio engineer and my wife is a voiceover artist.  We just got the ipad thinking she could record her voiceover auditions on the go, but we can't for the life of us figure out how to record audio while reading a script off of her email.
    Looking for an app that:
Either can record audio while in the background (garageband cannot)
OR Import text (copy paste I guess?) to read while recording
The app needs to  be able to edit audio and export or email out an MP3 - by edit audio I mean trim, fades, and move around sections.
Anyone have any thoughts on how to do this?  I have been looking around the web for answers for hours and can't find any.  Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi-  I've done a lot of research in this area and actually am just finishing a book on this subject which will soon be in the iBookstore.
The best app is TwistedWave.  It allows easy editing and recording, and also allows you record while you are in another app (such as a script your agent sent in your email)
I recommend MiC by Apogee as your microphone, available at the Apple store.
My book which goes in depth in how to get the best sound as well as how to edit is called:
    iVoiceover
    Super. Simple. Recording.
I'll post here when it's live in the iBookstore!

  • Record and edit tv shows

I want to be able to record HD Tv on network T.V., such as CBS, NBC or ABC on my Macbook Pro. I will be using my cable T.V. connection. I also want to be able to take this recorded show and edit it and use that edited material and put it in Keynote or a similiar application and watch it as a slide show or presentation. Can someone recommend any type of set up that would be easiest. Thanks.

not sure you can edit the material though - never looked into it.

  • How can I record and edit using an electronic drum kit to midi on a windows based PC (That I will eventually use in Garageband)?

    Hi there
I know this isnt really a Garagband question and possibly a little off GB topic, but in the end I will be using the midi file in Garageband so it kind of is
I'm new to Midi recording so please bare with me.
I am looking to do the following.
Have my drummer record from his Session Pro DD505 electronic drum kit (which has a midi out) into his windows based computer via midi (He owns a usb to midi cable), so that he can then email me the midi file, so I can add it to a song in Garageband on my Mac. I will then choose the sound of the drum kit myself from Garageband.
He needs to be able to correct any errors he has made in the midi file before emailing it me, either by re-recording sections or by moving the incorrect drum notes to the correct beat.
I guess he would need to be able to hear the song that he is playing along to, and possibly have a click track playing at the same time.
So I guess what I am looking for is some FREE windows software to be able to record midi drum files into, that can also be used to edit the midi file after. A separate free piece of software could also be used to edit the drum midi files instead though.
I know that I can correct the midi drum files myself in Garageband, but I would rather my drummer spent the time doing this, not myself.
I've spent a bit of time googling this today but keep bringing up the wrong things as I'm probably using the wrong search terms.
    So, any ideas?
    thanks

You will be able to use the Cubase AI4 with any audio interface. Another option is to look for a 30 day demo of software like Reaper http://www.reaper.fm/index.php It won't stop after 30 days... just your concience needs to respond
Problem is though that if all you want to record is the MIDI then your drummer will also need some drum sounds in the form of a software instrument or a 3rd party VST to load into the recording software. So another program that comes uncrippled but has drum sounds in it is Ableton Live http://www.ableton.com/products However this can be an intimidating piece of software and it also cripples itself after 30 days.

  • Has anyone recorded and edited a call on FaceTime?, Has anyone recorded and edited a call on FaceTime?, Has anyone recorded and edited a call on FaceTime?

    Hello,
I would like conduct interviews using Facetime on my iMac, iPad or iPhone. When I'm done with the interview I will need to ad music and a voiceover for intros and outros. Does anyone have exerperience doing this with Apple product? I have tried to record a FaceTime time and attemtp to open QuickTime but only previously made videos populate. For the editing would you suggest Garage Band?

There is no built-in way to record a call, including sound. You might be able to do it with third-party software, but you're on your own with that.

  • Screen Recording and Edit in iMovie

Alright, I record my screen with Quicktime X and when I import it into iMovie I click full quality but when I place it in the timeline it cuts off the dock and menu bar and makes the video horrendously terrible compared to the original HD file. I am using iMovie 09 and I was wondering if I can get it to be full screen and have full quality so I can edit it and add titles.

You need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
But this is not the best way to convert VHS tapes for editing in iMovie before making a DVD. You will experience considerable quality loss doing it that way, as the format of a DVD is mpeg2 which is highly compressed and not intended for further editing.
It would be far better to import the the video directly from a VHS player into iMovie via an analogue to digital converter such as, for example, a Canopus ADVC110, which can convert the VHS analogue format directly to a digital DV stream that iMovie wants.
I have done it this way for at least 35 VHS tapes (old family movies) with minimal quality loss - dependant on the quality of the original tape.

  • Logic Express for news recording and editing?

Based on the recommendation of many friends who work in public radio I bought a Digidesign M-Box 2 Mini and got ProTools to use for doing audio editing on news and spoken word projects. The thing has been a real pain in the butt causing me hundreds of system crashes and endless problems with my MacBook Pro (Late 2008). Digidesign has admitted that their M-Box driver is defective but they can't fix the current drivers 'cause they are soooo busy working on support for Snow Leopard (Which they may deliver sometime in Spring 2010). ProTools also requires that you have the M-Box connected to your system in order to launch the program.
I'm fed up with being forced to connect a defective interface to my laptop every time I want to use ProTools and ready to try something else. Are the audio editing tools in the new Logic Express 9 good enough to use for this kind of work?
I could almost get away with using Garage Band but it's a bit limited with support for only 16-bit audio (most news sources are pretty quiet and need boosting) and the GB interface makes me crazy.

I think Logic is overkill for what you need - you'll never use 95% of it for recording/editing spoken word audio files.
Although I'm not familiar with manipulating audio for news use, I'd think that something like Amadeus Pro would do the job.
    http://www.hairersoft.com/AmadeusPro/AmadeusPro.html
with an interface such as an AudioFire like this:
    http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/FireWire/AudioFire4/index.php
which is very good quality, reliable, and not expensive.
BTW, recent versions of GarageBand do support 24-bit recording.

  • Blank white screen during playback and editing

I have suddenly lost visibility to my edited video in the monitor panel when editing sequences.  Sometimes, right before it turns blank white, a strange grid of characters appear and then disappear.  I can hear audio and the raw source footage is fine and intact.  It's just everything I've been editing so far.  Has anyone else experienced this?  I've been using a Dell 8500 xps with Radeon 7770 for two years now and have had not problem up until now. Two things I did that might be culprit but not sure and need to see if someone can verify.
    1) I tried to install dynadock so that I could use my two monitors with kvm switches
    2) I downloaded a ted talk and tried to edit it.  That was the first time I saw the strange characters and assumed it was some sort of protective measure the ted site had implemented to keep people from tampering with their footage. I imediately stopped playing with the footage and closed it down.
One last thing is that there was a Quicktime update and a Adobe Premier update that occured around same time last week.  Too many variables.  Any ideas?

Does the grid of characters look like this?
If not, then try switching your project settings from Mercury Playback OpenCL to Software Only.
    Cheers,
    Jeff

  • I would like to record and edit content for delivery of ip security cameras

I have a  client that has implemented ip security cameras that would like the content edited and distributed on demand. Any design and/or technical advice?

    smgchandler,
Any camcorder that can connect via USB or that can save to an SD card can interface with an iPad if you have the iPad Camera Connection Kit so that you can watch your videos on the new iPad's beautiful retina display.  You can find this on the Apple website or in most big box retail stores.

  • MIDI recording and editing with Logic Express 8

Hello, I am a beginner. In the literature it is stated that I should "make sure that the latest DRIVER version is installed. I suppose that means the driver from the MIDI system manufacturer which in my case is LIMEX, Vienna, Austria. The MIDI system product name is MidiPro 3, not well known in the US.
Limex does not make/offer a driver. In the audio Midi setup window I was able to install this system and it took it. I can perform single track Midi recordings but when I select three tracks for simultaneous multi-track recording using three different instruments, the recording plays back with one and the same instrument on all tracks.
    What am I doing wrong?
Could this have something to do with the fact that I don't have a DRIVER from my MIDI instrument supplier, Limex?
Someone told me that since I can get Logic to recognize Limex and can record single MIDI tracks it means that I probably don't need a driver and that I am doing something wrong with the set-up.
    PLEASE HELP!

    Hi,
please clarify what you want to do. If you record midi data, this has absolutely nothing do to with the sound. Midi is data only, no sound. So, if you have three tracks containing the same midi data, it depends on the instrument (real or software instrument) you are triggering with this data what sound you'll get.
Example: You record to three tracks at once. Now all three tracks have the same midi data.
Now you set one track to the ES1 Synth, the other to a EXS24 sampler and the third to whatever.
Now all three tracks play back the same notes (midi data), but with different sounds (instruments).
If you trigger an external instrument (is the LIMEX an Instrument or just a midi keyboard?), the midi data has to be set to the correct midi channel and maybe you need a program change event to tell the external instrument which sound bank to use. You can create this Event in the Event List.

  • Place marker during recording and place back markers

    Hi,
I will be recording 5 channels of signals at rate of 200 samples/second for 1 hour or so. Meanwhile, I need to put markers for different user interventions. I would like to save in text file for other applications such as MS Excel. What would be a good format for the data file? One way would be keep adding NaN in an extra column and a message when the user enter a message and press a button. But it takes some space for the extra column and don't konw if other applications can read this column correctly. At the same time when the intervention occurs, need to draw a marker on the screen, and when VI is stopped, these markers need to be back-trackable when scrolling back.
Also, the data file may need a header that keeps track of all interventions in addition to the extra column. At the end, the header needs to join the data record to form the final data file. When playback, theses interventions show markers again on the screen. Also, the data file may need to be appendable.
Any suggestions and/or examples are appreciated. Thanks,
    Rut

So you would be talkinga bout 1000 pieces of data per second, x 60 sec/min, x 60/min per hour.  So 3.6 million pieces of data per hour.  Lets say 8 bytes per piece of data (depends on how you want to format the numeric value to a string).  So about 28.8 MB of data for one hour.  That isn't too large.  I would use a text based file format such as comma or tab delimited with CRLF at the end.  You could have 6th column that would either be blank or have the text note.  Excel should be able to open either of these just fine.  It would be a good idea to write the data using a producer/consumer architecture.  Accumulate the data to memory in chunks, and periodically write out the chunks to file.
I don't understand what you mean by drawing a marker on screen.  Do you mean have some X show up on a waveform graph?  If so you could create a 6th series of data with Nan interlaced with a numeric value such as 1 (no line and an X or other highly visible  data point) or someother value that shows up well on the graph considering the scale of the other values.  There won't be any easy way to associate an X with a text comment  other than displaying the text in a string indicator and picking it out of the array depending on which portion of the data is shown on the graph at that time.

  • Recording and editing in 16:9

I have taped video in 16:9 screen size with my DV camera and have imported the video into Final Cut Pro HD. My settings are in anamorphic 16:9 dv and everything look normal. When I render and export the final video and then import that final video into DVD studio pro, the video footage is elongated, stretched, and does not appear as cinema screen anymore.
I have always used Final Cut express and never had any problems with the wide screen before. I see more advanced setting options in Pro, maybe I am missing something. Any suggestions if I should adjust the render settings in Final Cut Pro? or should I adjust my DVD Studio pro settings?
    Thanks!
    michelle

That's what 16x9 looks like--it's not the same as letterboxed which is really 4x3 with black matte.
Is your DVD SP stuff set to 16x9? Go check. It should be--then all will be fine.

  • No Great Solution for Record Multi-Voice Tracks and Edit for Mac? :(

Let me see if I've finally got this right.
I've got FinalCut Studio Pro which comes with SoundTrack Pro.
    I've got Logic Express.
SoundTrack Pro cannot record from different channels from my Mixer, but it can edit pretty well and apply effects, such as Normalization, Silences and whatnot.
Logic can record from different channels from my mixer but has no editing capabilities, except Garage-band-like and even there, GB seems to offer more. That is there's no normalization or other things.
Okay, I accept that. But what I don't get is that in order to do something as simple as Record a podcast that has a Host on mic and 1 or 2 Skype callers coming into a Mixer (Mackie Onyx) and that mixer is routed to the Mac. In order to record each person on a different track, I have to:
Load Logic and record the tracks individually.
Export the Tracks as individual audio files.
Import them into SoundTrack Pro and edit them there.
Export them from SoundTrack to disk.
re-Import them into Logic (or Garage Band) and export them ("mixdown") as MP3 (SoundTrack won't export as MP3).
    Wow, that's very unexpected.
If I'm missing something, please let me know. This seems like a lot of "make fit" just to emulate what can be done in Adobe Audition on the PC. (Sadly, Audition doesn't run on Mac.)

I suppose my question is more along the lines of what solution (I've purchased them all) allows you to Record and Edit multiple spoken tracks of audio?
    I've purchased:
    SoundTrack Pro
    SoundBooth
    Logic Express
    Audacity
and of course I've upgraded to iLife 09.
If one of these tools could allow you to select a section of audio from 1, 2, 3, or all tracks and delete it with a "Ripple Delete" option, then I'd be a happy guy.
    Right now:
GarageBand doesn't allow you to delete and shift-left "ripple delete".
As for Logic, I don't see ripple delete either.
SoundTrack does do this but it only allow me to edit one Track at a time--open them all, but edit one, then the other, then the other. Lots of flipping around.
With Audition (which is limited to Windows) I can select a section of 1, 2, 3, or all tracks, and delete that section, ripple or not.
FYI: "Ripple" is a Final Cut Pro term.
To be honest, no that I think about it... FinalCut Pro may be the best solution. Load everythign into it as separate tracks and have at it--at least it does it.
Remember, I'm not a musician, nor do I record music, only audio for podcasting. (but don't equate "podcasting" to Video-podcasting as most people do).
Anyway, my solution will be to load Virtual Box on the Mac. Record using Logic (which did a great job of recording onto multiple tracks) and then bring those AIF files into Adobe Audition under Windows in VirtualBox--or perhaps on a Networked PC.
Of course the other solution (and perhaps less painful) would be to simply abandon the Mac entirely and move all this stuff onto the PC and only use the Mac for FinalCut Pro work. What a huge disappointment that would be.

  • Search for and edit single record in database

I am creating a few forms that access an Access database that will be used to enter data into the database.  I am able to open records from the database and scroll through records one at a time and have added features to be able to search for and display a single record.  The problem that I am having  is when I load a single record and then edit that record, I am unable to save any changes made to the record, in other words, the record doesn't update on the database.
I can add new records and edit records as long as I scroll to them using .next(), .last(), .first(), and .previous() commands; however, when I load a single record I can't figure out how to save changes to that record in the database.

Ok...so I think i can get it to work by doing something like:
    xfa.sourceSet.DataConnection.open();
    xfa.sourceSet.DataConnection.first();
    var oRecordList = ???????????
    var nCount = oRecordList.length;
    for (var i = 0; i < nCount; i++){
        if (CurrentRecord.rawValue != SearchField.rawValue){
            xfa.sourceSet.DataConnection.next();
where CurrentRecord is a text field that shows the index of the current record and SearchField is the field where a user enters the record that they are searching for.
I think I just need to figure out how to count the number of records in the database.  Any ideas?
