Panther Upgrade to Tiger and entourage

I have read the docs on tiger upgrades. I was just wondering if anybody can tell me that upgrading from panther to tiger will preserve my entourage data?

Yes it will.

Please help me im buggerd without the mac.

    Hi Andy!
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is avaialble?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
Did you use a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, to upgrade?
Did you do an Archive & Install, preserving User settings & preferences, installation, and if so, is the Previous System folder still on the HD?

  • Panther upgrade to Tiger & Hardware Check

I have the install disks for Tiger and want to upgrade an old eMac G4 (my daughters machine) from Panther. I need a little orientation about how to go about this without screwing up the rest of the computer and its files. Is this easily done? Its been so long since I have messed with Panther I wasn't sure what was require.
Also I got a hardware test disk with a mac Mini the same year we bought that emac. Would the ahrdware test work with the e Mac? We are having trouble with the airport card.

No, your AHT disc for the Mini will not work with the eMac. Different hardware. An AHT disc did come with the eMac, and that's the one you would use to test the hardware.
    Here's what you should do:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Panther Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Make a bootable backup of your Panther system. For this you will need an external FireWire drive large enough for the amount of occupied space on the eMac's internal drive plus a few GBs to spare.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the external drive.
Source means the eMac's internal drive.
    3. Test the clone to be sure it will boot the eMac. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the icon for the external drive then click the large right arrow button (you will have to wait a bit until the busy cursor returns to a normal cursor before you can select the external drive's icon.)
    4. Assuming all went well you can then proceed to install Tiger using the Archive and Install option. Read the following carefully before proceeding:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Upgrade to Tiger and Data Lost

I think I totally screwed up. I installed the Tiger upgrade last night and now my old documents, pictures, music, etc. are gone. When I upgraded to Panther I don't remember having to backup anything. Is there any way to recover any of my old files? Is there any software or professional I can call in for this?

Hi mnerijr and others, Welcome to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
I didn't think I needed to back up anything.
Go thru this and you'll think differently. Some may be a bit of overkill but better safe than sorry. If it shows up as 2 lines, make sure you get both.

  • Upgraded to Tiger and suddenly lost 512MB of RAM....

I have a very odd situation. I have a 1.5Ghz 15'' Titanium Powerbook that came with 1GB of RAM. I bought it about a year and a half ago. I just upgraded to Tiger a few days ago and I have noticed that my computer is running slower. It was weird to me that the new operating system made my computer run slower so I checked my RAM. I went to "About This Mac" under the Apple icon and it now tells me that I only have 512 ram on my computer. I am wondering how this could be possible that it isn't recognizing the rest of my RAM. I know for a FACT my computer had a Gig of ram.
    Thanks for the help!

Hi, J. Stone. If your computer has a 1.5GHz processor, it's Aluminum, not Titanium, and you need to repost in the Aluminum forums.
Successive versions of OS X have gotten fussier and fussier about RAM meeting the letter of Apple's specifications. If it doesn't meet those specs to a "T", it disappears. I don't know what other Albook owners are likely to tell you about RAM compatibility problems on your model (your RAM is quite different from that used in the Tibooks), but if one of your two RAM modules was purchased from a third-party source rather than from Apple, now is the time to check the warranty that was provided with it. Is Mac OS X compatibility guaranteed "for life", as is often the case with RAM? Some third-party RAM vendors will replace modules that "go bad" after OS updates or upgrades.
If all your RAM was bought directly from Apple, you have a good case for replacement, as long as your warranty hasn't run its course already.

  • Upgraded from Tiger and Mail is unresponsive

    Hey gang-
Well tonight finally made the plunge and upgraded from Tiger 10.4.11 to Leopard 10.5.6. Naturally one of the first apps I tried was the new Mail 3.5. Unfortunately it is absolutely dead. Clicking Get Mail does nothing, and none of the email in my .Mac Inbox displays. Neither does any of my email saved locally, even though all the folders from the Tiger version of Mail are there. Clicking on each looks as though they are empty.
I have good internet connectivity, as Safari works fine. It appears that all my Mail account data transferred correctly- all my account server data is there.
FWIW, when I look at Activity in Mail, it shows two activities- both called "Gathering Children from disk for local account".
Also of interest- the only way to quit Mail is with Force Quit.
Gaccch this is a bad way to start with Leopard! Any ideas how to get Mail working?
    Thanks!
    Dave

  • Upgraded to Tiger and now can't open any illustrator files! Please help me!

I upgraded my OS to Tiger and then updated to 10.4.8 and now can't get any of my Illustrator EPS files to open. I have spent the whole day trying to figure this one out (Launch Services advice in other posts) without any luck. What is going on here?!!! I have so much serious work to get done this weekend!
    Please help me!
    Amy

It's hard for anyone to offer any advice when you don't tell us what specifically is happening or not happening. Is there an error message? If so, what does it say? What version of Illustrator are you using? Does Illustrator open at all? Does it open regular Illustrator files? Have you reinstalled Illustrator?

  • Upgrade to Tiger and AW 6.2.9

I want to upgrade to Tiger on our iBook G4 10.3.9, but I don't want to mess up my AW database which is crucial to me (as I can see there is no easy replacement for this currently from Apple). From reading the posts, I can see only a few issues in Tiger with AppleWorks 6.2.9. Should I expect AW to work as well as it has in Panther?
iMac core duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   iBook G4

There is no reason not to expect AppleWorks 6.2.9 to work well in Tiger. I've been using Tiger since it was released over a year ago. I have a few databases, one particularly large, that have all continued to function without problems.
However, there are a few things to keep in mind.
As OS X is upgraded & updated, AppleWorks 6 seems more & more sensitive. It is important to delete the AppleWorks preferences after any update of OS X. These preferences also seem more likely to corrupt. Although, unlike Yvan, I don't regularly delete/replace mine. I have had to do this much more often than before. See my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, for more info.
Databases are more prone to corruption than other AppleWorks document types. It is important to make sure you have a backup (or two or three) of all critical files. I make sure I have a new copy of my irreplaceable databases before doing any major work on them.

  • Upgrade to tiger and which version of iLife

    Hi
My Mum has an emac and I'm wanting to upgrade it from Panther to Tiger for her, just wondering what version of iLife do I need to purchase to make iLife compatible with Tiger.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers Jen

    Hi Jen
There is a table on this page that has the details.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ILife
iLife 06 is only available secondhand I think.
Also as your question is about software, you may consider the 10.4 forum. They would have better advice for you 'over there' than I could give you.

  • Print Jobs Stop -- First w Panther, Now w Tiger and New Printer!

I was dealing with multiple problems, so I'm not sure where to start. I was using a G4 with Panther when, among other things, I could no longer print because anytime I sent something to the printer the job would stop. Trying to start it again didn't work. My hard drive crapped out (separate issue I now realize) and I had it replaced w/ a new hard drive installed with Tiger & also purchased a new printer. I installed the new printer (for now I have it connected directly via USB) and to my surprise and chagrin I still can't print for the same reason! The job stops immediately after I send the document to print. Trying to re-start, or deleting and printing again, etc. does nothing. I've been through all the troubleshooting tips on the support page and am at wit's end. The problem doesn't seem to be specific to an application, an OS, or the printer. The Mac guy who set up my new hard drive did save as much as possible from the old one & migrated it to the new. He must have transferred the glitch, but what could it be? Please help.

    Thanks a lot Greg.
I had problems printing to shared printer which was connected to my mac downstairs from my powerbook over airport. Kept on coming up as printer stopped. I turned all off and on, reinstalled drivers, deleted printers, and nothing worked 'till I found your tip.
I love the mac community, keep up the good work.

  • Upgraded iTunes9 & Tiger and now can't choose remote speakers.  Help?

I've tried a number of things recommended online to use my remote speakers again, but nothing has worked yet. In iTunes, "Look for remote speakers" is checked in Preferences. I can see them, but they're greyed out and I can't select them. The internet connection works fine through the Airport. I've tried turning off firewall, rebooting and turning it on again. iTunes Music Sharing is checked on the firewall.
I solved a separate network glitch caused by the Tiger upgrade by turning IPv6 to off in System Preferences>Network.
    Any ideas?

  • Imac G4 upgrade to Tiger and Itunes

    Hi All,
After a 3 day installation, de-installation loop I finally found a fix for upgrading and wanted to share in case others have the same issues.
I was going from Puma to Tiger (disc 10.4.6) and upgrade to 10.4.11. I wanted to run an Itunes version that would accept a 3rd Gen Nano (7.6 or above it said).
Apple updates offered me an upgrade to Itunes 9 which is where my 3 day install/de-install started. Its a shame that the upgrade facility doesn't do any compatibility testing first but you live and learn.
The issue is that if you load Ver 9 Itunes then you can't downgrade to anything that you download. I could only get Itunes 6 (on the 10.4.6 DVD) to load but then I couldn't run my Ipod. After following lots of instructions from this forum and tips/hints from others without any success (and I noticed many others were facing the same lack of success with totally de-installing Itunes 9) I decided that the only way through was to format and start again. Itunes 9 must do something or add something that isn't documented that stops you using ver 7 or 8.
So please don't waste your life - just format, re-install and don't upgrade to ITunes 9 if your can't run Safari 4. It took 3 hours to start from scratch
I'm going to copy to the Itunes forum in case this helps anyone else.
    Cheers

    Hi S!
Are you using a Full Retail Version of the Tiger install DVD, or a disk that may have shipped with your PowerBook G4?
Is the RAM original or added?

  • FCP-just upgraded to tiger and FCP Studio-reports 'Missing FW connection".

I just finished upgrading 3 computers to OS 10.4.7 and FCP Studio, then installed all the obvious updates.
The first 2 computers, a G5 and G4, had no problems seeing and capturing video via FW.
The last computer, my primary workhorse, cannot find the tape device, a DSR 20. Upon clicking 'continue', to finish loading FCP, in A/V settings, the system reports the Apple FW is "missing". I've switched out the cable, then the tape devices, I've rebooted and thrown prefrence and plist files... etc...
Here's a weird thing, the controller in the log and capture window works fine to control the deck, but it won't pass or capture the video.
I'm getting ready to reinstall everything. Anybody have an opinion?
    Thank you,

Often in upgrading the OS, QT or FCP for some odd reason QT will get knocked slightly off kilter. The usual solution it to force a full reinstall of QT.
    This is how:
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
    Good luck.

  • Reinstall Panther or upgrade to Tiger?

Per earlier post, I'm having networking trouble due to the fact that I accidentally changed the name of my powerbook so now windows machine sees my mac but says the path to access it is invalid. Anyway, was thinking about upgrading to Tiger if I do a complete reinstall anyway. Pros/cons?? Also, if you had a choice between keeping Panther and adding RAM (I only have the 256 that came with the mac or upgrading to Tiger and keep 256, what would you do! Thanks for input!!!

    Dan:
I concur with Don in that the first thing you should think of doing is to upgrade your RAM. An upgrade of OS will not solve all your problems. Panther is an excellend OS. Indeed, there are a number of people in these pages who have gone back to Panther from Tiger.
My suggestion is to first upgrade your RAM and update to 10.3.9. Work with that for a while, and see how it works for you. Getting the latest and best is not always the best thing for everyone. I, myself have tried Tiger and am back to Panther.
    Good luck.

  • Upgrading to Tiger & HP AIO printer TIP

I just upgraded from Panther to Tiger, 10.4.3. After reading about all of the issues surrounding HP AIO printer issues and upgrading to Tiger here is what I did and my HP AIO 6110 works perfectly after the upgrade.
Before upgrading I did a complete clone of my old system to a FW HD. Ran TechToolPro. Deleted all existing HP AIO software. Rebooted my machine. Upgraded to Tiger and then ran Combo 10.4.3 updater. Used Printer Setup to set up the 6110 from the Tiger upgraded drivers. Printer worked just as under Panther with no issues. Installed all the HP 6110 software.
Scanning and Coping as well as Printing all work perfectly.
I'm not saying this will work for others but it did work for me.
