Parallax and Polarization

Thanks to Terri and Grant I have been following The Radiant Vista's wonderful Daily Critiques. The one for January 29 at
http://www.radiantvista.com/dailyCritique/index.php
speaks about parallax and polarization in this straight-on photo of a flat-fronted, Spanish style church at high noon. But the photo, as submitted, has a dark sky, which the critiquer attributes to use of polarization. Obviously this has to do with contrast. But, what does "polarization" mean exactly?
The critiquer then performs a very neat trick of correcting the minor parallax to the left and right. He is using Photoshop. Is there a way to do this in PSE 3 for Mac?
Gordon McGilvray

Gordon,
Yes, Trish is correct. He's referring to the photographer having used a
polarizing filter on the camera. If you want to read a bit more about
polarization, see
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/polarizers.shtml
The fellow doing the critique frequently mixes up the terminology. In this
photo, for example, he says "parallax correction" when he should have said
"perspective correction". In another video, I heard him repeatedly say
"high key" when it was clear he meant "high contrast". I don't try to keep
track of the flubs. It's generally clear what he means through his actions,
don't let the terminology flubs confuse you.
Now for your question about "Perspective correction" in Elements. Yes, you
can do it. Elements has several Transform options. The two most useful
for perspective correction are the "Perspective" transform and the "Distort"
transform. You could probably use "skew" also but my personal preference
would be to use distort rather than skew. Feel free to use what feels right
to you.
The Perspective transform is intended to make perspective corrections easy
to do. You get eight transform handles (the little squares on the bounding
box) -- one at each corner and one in the middle of each side. Drag the
side handles, and the image skews. Drag a corner handle and the opposite
sides tilt in or out depending on the direction of drag. If the shot is
relative simple, this transform will do what's needed with a little
practice. I find it easier to use if I zoom down the image size and leave
the gray matte area to show the changes in the bounding box.
The distort transform is trickier to use but more flexible. Sometimes, I
find that a different correction is needed on each side (more than one
principle plane usually). In this case, the perspective transform won't
quite work as it makes the same adjustment on each side. But, using
Distort, I can adjust each corner independently and, by one at a time top to
bottom, and left to right, get the lines to straighten out and be parallel.
It's a little tricky as one adjustment can affect the others, but a little
rework and you can home in on the desired result. When you get used to it,
it's pretty quick and easy.
One note: If you are working with only a background layer, you have to
convert it to a regular layer to use the transform tools.
Have fun,
Bob

  • Parallax and Battery

    I have a 3 week old iPhone 5s running iOS 7.1. I've always been puzzled at whether or not the parallax effect drains battery. I like it and all, but I have it off because I think that it drains battery, but I absolutely love the transition effects that it has. However, if "Reduce Motion" is turned on, the transitions, along with parallax, go away.
    My question is: Does parallax drain battery?

    The old reduce motion option simply turned off the home screen animation (this is called parallax). The new reduce motion setting in iOS 7.0.3 turns off parallax AND ALL OTHER ANIMATIONS. Now it is all or nothing. I and many others enjoy the animations but dislike the parallax effect. We have submitted feedback to Apple suggesting that they include options for BOTH. You should too!

  • A Designer with a H/Parallax and a bag of goodies

    Hello, hopefully theres a person who knows the location to these - or can answer them???
    Started using EA last week, and from a PS and AI background and I love it.
    But I have an issue with the concept that is taken shape, and now I cannot complete it for client on time.
    So I have all the artwork for a:
    Horizontal Parallax moving Interactive Inforgraphic -
    My stage is 600px H and 4000px W, with 5 seperate background colours 800px w each, which I would like to scroll though (horizontally ---no vertical movement)
    So how do I activate horizontal scrolling???
    I would also like a Next & Previous (forwards - backwards) button on each page which are clickable (mine aren't doing that!)
    And finally on the base of the inforgraphic I require a contant measurement of your location and the page your on, so you can click 2 pages back if you wish.
    I was thinking about Adobe Muse - but I don't want a seperate URL - client wants this to be embeded on their website.
    If someone can provide a similar example, and tell me how to adapt to draw in my elements and symbols?
    Many thanks,

  • Parallax and 3d transformations

    Hi all,
    I'm looking for a way to do the following:
    * define position of elements onscreen  by x,y and z coords (in xml to apply to loaded images later)
    * position loaded images at those coords _without_ the scaling but with other 3D effects still showing
    The client wants parallax effect but does nog want to draw with scaling in mind that a 3d transformation normally does. Thus by simply setting the z property in a file sprites should move relative to one another as in 3d space but just not scale.
    Suppose I could use the Matrix3D but can't get my head around it... Can someone point me in the proper direction or to a nice tut?

  • Edege animate: Parallax and Spotlight = Not working together?...

    Hi all,
    This is my first post, and sorry for my English :))
    I am learning, and have a small composition on Edge Animate CC 2014 on Scrolling Parallax, which works very well, and now I want to add a spotlight... but do not working together.
    My code is:
    Stage: 1920 x 2000
    Autoplay: No
    -- creationComplete: (nothing)
    -- compositionReady:
    EC.Parallax.setup(sym);
    On scene:
    A Text (is for launch the spotlight with the click function):
    Action for "Text":
    -- click
    // Open image in spotlight overlay
    // Set up configuration
    var config = {
    width: "1024",
    height: "768",
    type: "image",
    source: "images/dog.jpg"
    EC.Spotlight.open( config );
    My problem is that the parallax works great, but when I make a click on the button that showing the spotlight... this is not released, and "dog.jpg" picture it is show on the bottom of the page (without spotlight).
    What am I doing wrong?
    Note: I charge via url the "All in One" of EdgeCommons CDN : http://cdn.edgecommons.org/an/1.1.2/js/min/EdgeCommons.js
    Many thanks!

    Ok. I've solved. I needed to load some things:
    EC.Parallax.setup (sym);
    The full code (that works for me) is:
    -- compositionReady:
    EC.Parallax.setup(sym);
    // Load Edge Commons
    yepnope({
    load: [
    "http://cdn.edgecommons.org/an/1.1.0/js/min/EdgeCommons.js",
    // Load style sheet for the overlay
    "http://cdn.edgecommons.org/an/1.1.0/css/style.css"
    -- click
    // Open image in spotlight overlay
    // Set up configuration
    var config = {
    width: "1024",
    height: "768",
    type: "image",
    source: "images/dog.jpg"
    EC.Spotlight.open( config );
    I hope to serve others.

  • RemoveEventListener in drag and drop parallax composition

    Hello all,
    I have a question, one of my students is making a project with a horizontal parallax and he wants to add drag and drop functionality to this. It works, only when you start to drag the object (converted to symbol) shoots to the right out of the screen.
    My guess is that this happens because of the parallax.. So, i want to remove the mousemove function temporarily so the drag and drop works. The code i came up with is this:
    yepnope({nope:['jquery-ui.min.js'], complete: init});
    function init(){
        sym.$('bamboe4').draggable();
        $("#Stage").removeEventListener('mousemove', onMove, false);
        sym.$('panda').droppable({
        accept:sym.$('bamboe4'),
            drop: function (){
                //addeventlistener here..
    The thing is, it doesn't work..
    In composition ready (stage) is the following code:
    this.onMove=function(posX, posY){
        timelinecontrol = Number(posX)*5;
        sym.stop(timelinecontrol);
    In mousemove (stage) is the following code:
    this.onMove(e.pageX, e.pageY);
    I hope that someone can help me.
    With regards, Michel

  • I am new to After Effects and Motion 5 and I have a question

    Hello there,
    I am currently working on a personal side project for a family member. She would like me to make a video with recorded audio and pictures from the 1920’s for my grandmother. I would like to give the parallax and 2.5D effect a try but as I never used After Effects or Motion before I am a little overwhelmed.
    I have about 80 images to animate. Right now I am in the ‘Photoshop phase’. I am going through each image and separating the foreground, mid-ground, and background, into separate layers and saving the .psd files to eventually bring into Motion 5 (or After Effects) and animate.
    After seeing this video:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVrYyX3bHI8
    I really wanted to animate the images I had in a similar fashion. I really loved how they seemed to move and know that I can accomplish this appearance with the pin tool in After Effects. After seeing this video however, I continued looking into the 2.5d effect and found this movie for Motion 5:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmxlm2nkVLA
    I bought Motion 5 because I thought the interface seemed more user friendly to newcomers (like myself), the effects were similar, and because I couldn’t afford to pay for After Effects every month.
    But now I am kicking myself. Motion 5 is lovely and I do like the camera effects but I don’t think I can accomplish the ‘puppet’ effect with it like I can in After Effects. Does anyone know if it is possible? Is there a plugin for Motion 5? Can I send my .psd files into Motion 5, set up the timeline and cameras, save it, and then move it into After Effects and then use the pin tool to manipulate the images and layers?
    I have read that some say it is hard to move Motion files into After Effects? If this is the case, could I save the Motion file, open it in Adobe Premiere, and THEN open it in After Effects and play around with it?
    Any help is appreciated. Thank you so much in advanced.

    2.5D is fairly easy to do in Motion... that's the good news. The bad news is: if you don't know what you need to do to accomplish it, it's practically impossible to do easily or well.
    The first problem to overcome is perspective, and the other problem is parallax.
    These two tutorials (by Mark Spencer) will give you all the information you need dealing with moving Photoshop Layers in Z-space. Even though the point of the tutorials is a "fly through", the same information applies to creating 2.5D. Just animate the camera laterally (sweep) instead of dolly.

  • I want to disable parallax but keep the Animations on 7.0.3?

    I got the new iOS 7.0.3 and I want to disable parallax. On 7.0.2 I would enable reduce motion and it would turn of parallax. Now when I turn on reduce motion it turns off parallax AND the animations. How can I ONLY disable parallax and not the animations???

    That is very easy to do.Just go to settings>general>accessibility>reduce motion and turn that on  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5595

  • 3D camera constraints

    Hi all,
    A bit of maths...
    I have a virtual camera (due to portability of code etc. I cannot use the standard 3D transformations from Flash...) which moves through a space. Size (and position) of the objects are calculated by the pretty standard:
    scale = focalLength / ( focalLength + zpos )
    (larded with some code to show all at scale == 1 when camera.z == 0)
    The space is 'sealed' off by a background image of which the sides should not be visible, therefore the camera has constraints set; no moving past certain x- and y-values so the view frustum does not exceed the edges of the image.
    Now the problem is that an object pretty close to the edge of the cube more or less defined by the background image is visible when the camera is at z == 0. However, when the camera moves forward, the view frustum kind of moves away from the edge of the box therefore making it impossible to see the edges of the box or anything present there when constraints are maintained. (see image below).
    Does anyone have a smart, and preferably not to crazy on the maths part, solution for this at hand? (can't be the first I suppose )
    Thanks in advance,
    Manno

    The 3D camera tracker is unpredictable. It tends to work best if the video is fairly sharp with clearly defined areas which represent movement of the environment. It seems to need this to calculate parallax and the camera field of view. If you have objects or people moving in the footage, it can through the camera tracker off. Experiment with the various settings on a small section of the video clip. Once you have settings that work, expand the time range you want to track and re-try it.
    I have gotten very mixed results, and find that its simple controls and interface may limit some of its power. When it works, it usually works very well. When it doesn't, the results are useless. Keep trying and good luck.

  • Can we improve iOS 7 for senior citizens?

    I support 20-30 people in the local community here and most are senior citizens.  iOS 7 has been a big miss with this group of people. We immediately used accessibility to turn off parallax and to fatten the fonts.  This helps, but they still object to the GUI animation and hip-hop color choices of the icons.  I suspect the Apple development team lacks a strong voice for the over-50 market and a few more mistakes like this "upgrade" could alienate them forever.  This is a shame, because they are the people with the most spend power to buy Apple products and influence younger generations (who buys the Christmas presents?).  After experiencing the wrath of these people, I will never again believe that Jonathan Ive was a genius in doing this design because he excluded a good percentage of the Apple market!  Dear Apple:  We need to take a good, hard look—beyond just accessibility—at representing the needs of more senior users of all of your products. The 50+ market segment appears under represented!

    Thank you for the kind words. The best way to honor Steve Jobs is for the legions of loyal followers to continue to voice concerns when Apple strays from what makes them great.  Steve could tell his staff "no" when the innovation was off track.  My fear is this did not happen with iOS 7 and may be a problem with Mavericks, because it is leaving an important market segment behind. More senior users experience with Apple products is being degraded.

    The example code that was provided with parallax is attached.  As far as the driver for the serial to USB, I downloaded that and I can see the BS2 in my Device Manager (COM5).  When I ran both the example code from Parallax and an example code through LabVIEW for a basic serial write and read, I was unable to get communication between my laptop and the BS2.  If you have code that you developed before, it would be really helpful if I could test that out with my microcontroller. Thanks for all your help guys!

  • CREATING A RECEDING RECTANGLE IN AFTER EFFECTS

    My apologies, but I'm kind of a left brained guy and sometimes it's hard to wrap my mind around right brain spatial problems that others find laughably easy.
    I'm interested in creating this simple box with four walls through which one could view a video at the far end.  I don't need all the little videos on the side, I am just unsure how to create that simple box.
    Would I extrude that in 3d somehow?  Can I construct it all at once rather than aligning one wall at a time?  I'm not too good with parallax and vanishing points yet.
    What basic workflows do I need to master to create this simple box in 3D?
    Thanks so much!  Rocket science to me right now.
    Here is the underlying video from which it was derived; it was constructed in another program, but I'm certain this is very straightforward in AE.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvP6mFokVCETh
    Thanks!   Matt Dubuque

    Position the anchor points is purely mathematical. Think of a cube with all of the anchor points for each layer exactly in the center of the cube. If the sides were 400 pixels by 400 pixels then 1/2 of the width or height would be 200. Offset the anchor point by 200 pixels in Z and you've moved all of the layers back by 1/2 the width of the layer. Since rotation always happens around the anchor point when you rotate the in increments of 90º they will always end up with aligned edges.
    Now to the problem of your edge seams. First of all, work with even pixel values for the size of your layers. 200 X 200 works, 205 X 205 or 300 X 145 won't work as well. This is because AE does sub pixel positioning and the edges at half pixel values will be interpreted with different values than edges at whole pixel values.
    The second problem is that any time there's any angle to a line or edge the edge must be interpreted to fix aliasing (jaggy edges) that are caused when you try to draw a diagonal line on a checkerboard. It is called anti-aliasing. This gives you different pixel values at the edge with the image is at an angle. After Effects makes it's transparency calculations using straight alphas. In most cases this is by far the best option. When it comes to matching up edges of these 3D planes it isn't the best. It would be better to add the alpha values together rather than use a straight calculation which combines the values.
    Fortunately AE has a blend mode called Alpha Add. It only effects the alpha channels are calculated.  Changing the blend mode to Alpha Add eliminates the problem until you start adding lights to your scene.
    As soon as you start adding lights to the scene you run into additional problems calculating alpha edge values. There are some workarounds to eliminate light leaks in these situations that involve scaling the layers slightly that are nearest the camera so that the problem is hidden. In spite of what your wife says trying to be perfect in every frame isn't a very good way to make a living in the visual effects business. You have to be able to make your scene look right with the least amount of effort so you can move on the the next of the thousands of frames it takes to complete a project. That is the biggest challenge faced by anyone working with AE.
    Unfortunately, unless you use ray traced rendering to extrude a box in AE you cannot fix the problem completely, but by carefully designing your animation to hide these problems you can make things look perfect without being so. Take these two cubes with a point light set in the center. The one on the left is perfect but looks wrong, the one on the left has the back left wall moved 1 pixel to the right and the right front wall is scaled 101% in X to hide the seams. If I needed to spin the cube and add motion blur I would need to pre-compose the spinning cube and add CC Force Motion blur to the scene to hide the seams. It's prety easy to see which version of the spinning cube works better.
    I hope this long winded explanation helps. Take a look at his image. It shows two solids separated by 2 pixels in the center. The Alpha levels of the pixels that are going to match up are shown. The panel on the left shows the edges matching with the blend mode set to Alpha Add. The image on the right shows the blend mode set to normal. The differing shades of blue are caused by combining rather than adding the alpha values of those pixels.

  • Speed patch for n900

    Karam from TMO has been doing some great things for our n900's.
    he has been working on some packages that help our n900's move along like black Farrari's and gave them better gas mileage while he was at it (a seperate thread)
    here is the information and process for installing the speed patch.  there is a deb file he is working one to make it easier, but it is not including everything as of yet, so, as i have been working on this and testing it for a couple weeks with this configuration can pretty much assure the success doing it this way.
    you will need to be sure that you have rootsh installed.  you can get the basic instructions from Top 12, and then these instructions will need to be done using Xterm.
    You need To have bash installed
    NOTE : IF YOU WANT BASH3 OR 4 YOU CAN INSTALL THEM
    xterm
    sudo gainroot
    apt-get install bash
    1-)Download speedpatch.tar.gz from attachments or from HERE
    and save it in /home/user/MyDocs
    NOTE : MyDocs is Not Documents
    it is the default root folder of N900
    like : Nokia N900/
    2-)Download speedpatch-install.sh.txt From attacments or from HERE
    and save it in /home/user/MyDocs
    NOTE : MyDocs is Not Documents
    it is the default root folder of N900
    like : Nokia N900/
    3-)Open xterminal and write:
    sudo gainroot
    apt-get install bash
    cd /home/user/MyDocs
    bash speedpatch-install.sh.txt
    Then REBOOT when finished everything
    PS : Ignore Any Errors appear about device resource busy or any others
    HOW TO UNINSTALL
    To remove the patch:
    1-)Download speedpatch-uninstall.sh.txt from attachments or from HERE
    and save it in /home/user/MyDocs
    2-)Open xterminal and write:
    sudo gainroot
    cd /home/user/MyDocs
    bash speedpatch-uninstall.sh.txt
    Then Reboot
    OPTIONAL
    And For transitions file (OPTIONAL)
    it is recommended to use good transitions.ini although it is optional to use (transitions.ini is extracted from speedpatch.tar.gz)
    if you are using the stock themes
    sudo gainroot
    cp /usr/share/hildon-desktop/transitions.ini /usr/share/hildon-desktop/transitions.ini.bak
    cp /home/user/MyDocs/transitions.ini /usr/share/hildon-desktop/
    if not then replace /usr/share/hildon-desktop with the path of your theme so in my case (using the blue sky theme)
    sudo gainroot
    cp /usr/share/themes/Blue-sky/transitions.ini /usr/share/themes/Blue-sky/tranistions.ini.bak
    cp /home/user/MyDocs/transitions.ini /usr/share/themes/Blue-sky/
    And if you ae using theme-customizer
    sudo gainroot
    cp /opt/theme-customizer/transitions.ini /opt/theme-customizer/transitions.ini.bak
    cp /home/user/MyDocs/transitions.ini /opt/theme-customizer/
    (so they are applied once changing theme using theme-customizer)
    DONE
    If you want to restore the original transitions.ini
    ex :
    sudo gainroot
    cp /usr/share/themes/Blue-sky/transitions.ini.bak /usr/share/themes/Blue-sky/tranistions.ini
    NOTE: the transition.ini file has [thp tweaks] section in the end of it
    Also parallax and zoom_on_press under [home] section
    So you can use it with CSSU
    You may not feel all the changes with transitions until reboot
    So a reboot is recommended
    otherwise if you don't want to use it then
    rm /home/user/MyDocs/transitions.ini
    Enjoy

    hi,
    you're aware of the script's sleep condition:
    if [ "$brightness" == "0" ]; then
            if [ "$keyboard" == "closed" ]; then
    if [ "$proximity" == "open" ]; then
                    echo 10 > /proc/sys/vm/vfs_cache_pressure
    so you not just locked your device in between the last two commands but retracted the keyboard too, right? (besides not phoning…)
    if applied correctly it oughta work fine—good luck.
    ps: you can also ssh into your phone and watch the value toggling 'live.'

  • Recommend 8mm Film Transfer Service

    I would like to have our family 8mm films (and one 16mm from 1929) transferred to a digital format for editing in FCP. I don't want to spend a ton of $$ (I have 47 3-inch 8mm reels), but I want a good quality transfer. (One quote I got was for over $1,000) There are a bunch of companies that do this, but it is hard to tell who is good. Apparently there are several methods for transfer and it seems most result in an uncompressed .avi file. I am sorry to post this off-topic question here, but I trust this FCP forum and hope maybe some other editors have done this kind of project before.
    Thanks in advance for replies.

    Catherine
    I think you have two incompatible requirements: "Good quality transfer" vs. "I don't want to spend a ton of $$." There is a high cost for a good quality commercial transfer.
    A few years ago I got the bug to transfer family 8 and Super8 mm film to digital. My first attempt was to simply project the image on a screen and aim a camcorder at it. The result was not-so-great — flicker when projector speed isn't perfectly synched with camcorder speed, plus parallax and not perfect focus since the camcorder has to shoot the screen at an angle because it's alongside the projector, not directly in line with it.
    Then, after a recommendation from this forum, I checked out MovieStuff (see Carl's post above). I ended up purchasing a WorkPrinter-XP and doing the job myself. (Click on the 'Equipment' link at the bottom of the MovieStuff page.) In simple terms, software on the Mac syncs the camcorder with the projector, capturing the film frame-by-frame, resulting in no flicker, no parallax, full-frame capture, and a sharp picture. Drop the file in FCP and edit to your heart's content, then create a DVD with music, a voiceover and/or closed captioning, and wow the family.
    Other than having total control of all phases of the project plus the satisfaction of doing this myself, the next best thing is that, in the end, it cost me nothing. In fact, it continues to pay for itself. What would've been spent having the film commercially transferred, wasn't. As word spread, distant relatives asked if I could transfer their film. Yes, for a reasonable fee. Then word spread to non-relatives. You get the idea. In short, there is still a lot of 8mm film out there in canisters that people want to see but can't because their projectors don't work and many have heard horror stories of the product received when film was sent away to a commercial transfer outfit.
    If doing it yourself interests you, one recommendation I would make is to splice the film on all those 3" reels and put it on 8" reels. The job goes a lot faster with fewer reels.
    Good luck

  • IOS 7.0.3:  Not impressed with new Reduce Motion update

    I agree with others that the parallax feature was nauseating at times however the zoom in/out animations of opening/closing apps didn't bother me much.  Maybe I was one of the few in this category however up until iOS 7.0.3, I truly enjoyed turning on the "Reduce Motion" under settings because it allowed me to turn off the parallax and still retain the the zoom in/out animations of iOS 7.  Now with 7.0.3, it turns off the parallax as well as all the OS animations.  I wish they had allowed two options under the Reduce Motion setting where one setting allowed you to turn on/off the parallax and another setting that allowed you to turn on/off the OS animations.  I am curious as to what others think about this new update to the Reduce Motion setting in iOS 7.0.3.  Thoughts?

    Couldn't agree with you more! Send feedback to Apple and suggest they correct this. I already did.
