Parallel Universe?

Hello, I upgraded Power MAC G5 2.3 Ghz(Late 2005) with a 1 TB W.D. Black hard drive. I made one partition on the drive using disc utilities. I booted up from the disc (Leopard) and then went to time machine in utilities to get it back to where it was. I made the new drive the startup disc. Now, I seem to have 2 "universes" with different files and the computer boots to one or the other. They both have their own time machine records. I know this because I set up a file on the desktop and each "universe" has a different name for that file. The base of each universe is the same, just the new added files are different. The computer is used solely for music in Logic.
Any thoughts on getting back to one view? Your help would be appreciated!

Thanks BD,
When I say parallel universe, I can restart and enter directly into the new desktop. I checked and the new HD is the startup disc.
More background - I named a file on the desktop, saving some files there. I then shut down for the night. Next evening I turned it on and the files were not there. I then downloaded the files again, saving them to the desktop but with a different file name. I then restarted the computer and the original file name appeared. I restarted again and the new file name appeared. I only have one user on this machine. What makes it strange is that I ran Time Machine and, depending on the "universe" I'm in, TM reflects that profile, same saving times for each profile.

  • File window not updating modif. dates – and mysterious parallel universe discovered

The day started innocently enough when I tried to edit some <meta> content on a site I'm building and then saved my work. Little did I know...
DW's "File" window refused to update the "Modified" column of the files I worked on.  Open and closing the files shows that my changes have been recognized and incorporated into the HTML, and the files show up with correct modification dates in Finder (I'm on a Mac). They just won't change date in DW.
When I upload the modified-but-not-redated-in-DreamWeaver files to my remote site, they appear with the incorrect dates on the server, but a text comparison in DW shows that my local and remote files are synched.
Now for the truly weird part: when I run the site in Safari (after flushing its cache), a Source check shows the old code is still operational.  (I also changed the titles of the pages in question to quickly confirm which version was being displayed. This check shows the old title displayed.)
    Here's the site address:  http://www.bearriverbooks.com/index.html
Now for the truly, truly wierd part.  I have a parallel site ( http://www.queen-of-the-northern-mines.com/index.html ) which contains copies of the bearriverbooks.com files. These files, too, show the wrong modification dates in DW's "Files" window and on the remote server – but they display correctly. Anyone who wants to check can compare page titles, which are longer in the later pages with correct code.
I checked the remote site addresses in the "Manage Sites..." center.  I have not crossed my wires there (though I can smell a few arcing badly in my brain.).

I am having the same issue on a Mac 3.4Ghz i7 running Mac OS 10.7.  I have Dreamweaver CS 5.5 v.11.5 Build 5344.
I have a linux webserver, running ProFTPD v.1.3.1
Both my mac and my linux server are set to the correct date and time.
And ls on the linux servers tells me the files have the correct modified date and time, but this is getting lost in translation to dreamweaver when I view the remove server in the File tab.
    Any help appreciated.

  • PARALLEL Universe, do we have the hinterland passage to AutoCAD??

The last time i tried this stuff was virtual PC about 10 years ago. It was not a good idea after all, as many good ideas often are.
    Now my question is:
Does anybody have experience with AUTOCAD on a MacBook Pro? Meaning windows based. I know what they astronaut says: "Run any version of Windows at blazing speed" but is that really true?
I'm asking not because of anything -but- that I don't want to waste my time on silly nonsense. Does this PARALLELS work properly or not? What are the issues at hand, is there a serious DISK usage, slowness, whats the deal here?

Parallels Desktop for Mac is not an Apple product. You'll find FAQs and other support for the product at http://forum.parallels.com/.
As for the basic question, "Yes, it's true." Parallels does run most versions of Windows but not as fast as a native machine. For that you would need to use Apple's Boot Camp beta to install Windows as a self-booting system on an Intel Mac. You can download the Boot Camp software and read the documentation for more information.

  • Framemaker and Parallels for mac

(moving this over from another thread)
We decided to go with Framemaker and mac, and I'm using Windows Parallels 5 to make that happen on a virtual machine. This works well, for the most part, as it means I dont have to leave my native (mac) environment or my mac applications including (mail etc) notifications.
I am working with Framemaker 9 - creating DITA standard xml files for a help system.  So far the only technical glitch is - the edit/undo buttons are now grayed out - unaccountably.
If anyone has similar experiences - any solutions? My current Parallels 5 is up to date with recent updates.
    thanks,
    John

    Peter,
Thanks so much for your reply.  I tried your suggestions, but to no avail.  I then spent quite a bit of quality time with Adobe technical support, and they were very helpful, and got me on my way.  Just in case anyone else with similar issues should come across this thread I will describe some of the issues.
BTW - John, now that I have FM9 running, I have not experienced the nonfunctioning UNDO command that you described in the original post.  Sorry.  I will let you know if it occurs in a delayed fashion as yours did.
For anyone who just installed Parallels and then Windows XP, what I found out is that many of the components in XP are very old school.  Flash is way out of date, Explorer is, too.  This may impair the functioning of the extractor, I am not sure.  As a Mac user, some of these issues were foreign to me.  I just wanted to run Windows so I could use FrameMaker on my Mac.
First I had to update Flash, and to do this I downloaded the latest version of the FireFox-Mozilla web-browser (or you could update MS Explorer).
Once we had all of these components up-to-date, we were still running into problems with file extraction, and the Tech Support person had me load a program called WinRAR (google it) which seemed to be a more configureable extractor than the default one that comes with the FrameMaker download.  Using WinRAR we extracted the files into the Programs folder (once WinRAR was installed, the generic box icon for the extraction program changed to a normal looking icon).  This may all be possible using the default extractor, I just don't know.
And a final for-what-its worth: before going the Parallels route, I tried installing SheepShaver to run Classic on my MacBook Pro so I could continue to run my Mac copy of Frame v7.  SheepShaver may be OK for getting your old games and simple programs up and running, but it did not seem anywhere near stable enough to get something like FrameMaker running with a long document with graphics and cross references.
Final working configuration: FrameMaker 9 on Win XP SP2 on Snow Leopard 10.6.3 on a 17" MacBook Pro with Intel Core i7 processors (April 2010 model) and Parallels 5, 8 GB RAM. Seems to work so far, I have imported my old FrameMaker 7 Mac files (didn't even have to save them as MIFs!).  Now I need to relearn Frame in the "Parallel" universe of Windows.
Time spent monkeying around with SheepShaver, trying InDesign as a substitute for FrameMaker (close, but not close enough), downloading and installing Parallels/Windows XP and trying all kinds of tricks to get iFrameMaker running and then being on-hold/on-line with Adobe tech support: 16+ hours.
Getting FrameMaker running again on my main machine: Priceless!

    Hi, Mark:
I wish everyone keeps a copy of this post, so they could present your positive Adobe tech-support experience when someone posts a polar-opposite bad Adobe tech-support experience.
D'ja ever notice that you find something that you lost in the last place you looked? Because you don't need to look further, right? Glad you got a working combination.
I didn't have any special problems installing Parallels, Windows XP, and FrameMaker on my Mac (hardware and OS described in another post on this thread,) but I've been bi-platform for a long time. Actually, I began with Virtual PC on a much weaker Mac running OS 9 years ago, which I abandoned because of the poor performance, due almost entirely to the underpowered Mac. On my current Mac, I began with VMware's Fusion 2, then 3, but found it quirky enough to try Parallels5, which seemed smoother, and offered an inexpensive side-grade, followed by inexpensive deals to upgrade to Parallels 6.
I'm interested in what shortcomings you found with InDesign for your purposes. If you think not too many folks would be interested, please send private forum email by clicking on my name and looking for send private message.

  • BTSPORT Chaos makes BT 'SERVICE' An Even LESS Apt ...

*** You have a new product I'VE known about since last year, yet because you can't support it WE, the LONGSTANDING, suffer!!
So, I STARTED calling BT today at around 2pm...and here's how it has gone so far.....
Call #1: After choosing various options and listening to several recorded messages, about 2:30 in, I hear, 'because of high demand for BT Sport support, we cannot take your call at the moment.' That's it...no sorry, no call back later, no 'give up and go buy SKY', no 'pray to the God Vishnu'...nothing....
I emmediately call back as I think I may have misheard...but this isn't my first BT sponsored Journey into the Unbelelievable....hmmm.
Call #2: Same kind of system, but for some odd reason this time I am first asked to 'say in a few words why you are calling BT'...don't tempt me.....so I resist and say 'Youview not working'....succinct and to the point, I think? After I repeat it the second time, the poor dear hears what I say...I suspect the constant shouting she has to endure has damaged her idrum....This time SUCCESS...oh, no, wait...3mins in and I am cut off.....odd, usually iit needs a human for BT to do that...they are getting so efficient these days, aren't they?
    Call #3: Blah blah blah..woman...in queue...25mins...cut off...no human.
Call #4: .....45mins wait...TA-DA!!! HUMAN......ish. She introduces herself...sorry, no way can I spell it and I wouldn't want to offend someone by misspelling their name, it's rude....anyway, post security grilling I give the details of my problem....
OK technofans, here's the meat between the Cut Off Slicess....since the last 'update' my YV box appears to have lost all control over normal functions. I get 24-36hrs where it stubbornly refuses to record anything 'recording failed' and then it appears to temporarily come to its senses. That's problem one; problem two is that it keeps freezing when I am watching something...anything from on demand or catchup TV..I don't 'do' live tv any more. First of all it was every day or so and now it is down to every hour to hour and a half. Only 'fix' is a full power cycle....good job the box turns on quickly huh(??!??). Also, I get intermittent loss of picture..my TV shows 'out of range' on screen like when I had a duff HDMI cable once before for my BTV box(more of this fella later)
And the reply form the wise BT sage? (Don't hold your breath, to be honest it's a bit of an anti-climax)
Sorry, Sir, but I am not trained on YouView, so I will have to transfer you to the Youview team who I am sure will be able to help you.
WHAT? Ah, but wait...our hopes and dreams can yet be dashed further...
'But as BTSport(AAARRRGHHH) has just been released they are EXTREMELY busy(up from high demand, note) so I will have to place your call in their queue.......'
    The pain....the anguish...WAIT, I have a plan....
Well, if you had that kind of problem with a BTV box you'd courier a new one out, right?
A very reluctant affirmation is granted....why the difficulty, it was a simple question? Oh...you thought it was a loaded one?   BOOM
Well...then you can just courier me a new YV box..or you can EVEN just send me an HDMI cable and I can try that first...how's that? (I doubt the cable will fix it, but it is worth a try..it MAY alleviate the worst problems.)
Sorry,  I am not in the YV dept. so my system will not allow me to courier these items.
    The pain....the anguish...WAIT, I have ANOTHER plan....
'Well, if you are the BT Vision team, then you can get an engineer out to fix THAT box....and he can kill two birds with one stone and we're all happy.'
So, I explain that my BTV box is broken too...it's just dead, Dave....and we then enter a parallel universe like none I have EVER seen before.....
    QUESTIONS ASKED / TESTS REQUIRED
    1. IS the light on? No the box is DEAD.
    2. Let me check it from my end. OK but you're wasting your time....unless you have REALLY long arms it wont work.
    3. Is it connected by SCART or HDMI. SCART.....why?
    4. What colour is the BTV box? It's a new type...OK, not strictly answering but it's clearer.
    5. No, what colour is it? BLACK....ah, I see what you're doing now.......
    6. How many SCART sockets does it have? Just like all the other hundreds of thousands of identical ones it has two....she doesn't believe me, boys and girls.
    7. Please remove the SCART socket and count to ten then put it back. The girl's got stamina, gotta give her that. DONE.
    8. How is it connected to the HUB? I so want to say 'Voodoo' but I stick with 'directly wired'.
    9. Please remove the ethernet cable from the homehub coming from the BTV box. Count to 10 then place it back into another port. DONE and DONE.
    10. Is there a power light on now? Strangely enough, your excellent diagnostic process has failed to cure, or even isolate the problem!!!
    11. There is a power lead in the back? YUP....clutching at straws now, she's tiring....
    12. And it is plugged into the wall socket. Oh yeah....I hear a sigh..are we done? No....?
    13. Please press the big power button on the front and hold for ten seconds! Why always 10? I go 'rogue' and do it for 11..how 'Spinal Tap' of me....No change.
    14. 'So, now we've proven what I said all along....can you please book an engineer visit for me..or just send me a YV OR BTV box please...either will do for a start....
'Er...one minute please, sir....I'll just put you on hold..'
Will I get a box couriered..and if so, which one...or will she do as they normally do and cut me off...accidentally/on purpose....who knows...but it's Hobson's Choice really...either you're admitting you can't fob me off and are cutting me off OR you're not capable of working a simple telephony system...
    'Thank you for holding...' WOW
'Unfortunately, as you now have a YV box, our system no longer has you as a BTV customer, so I can't send you that replacement out either.'
'But I STILL HAVE a BTV box..'
'Yes, but the YV box was a replacement for it.'
'No, it wasn't I STILL HAVE the BTV box and I PAID FOR BOTH.'
    'Well I can't help you.'
'So you are refusing to fix or replace my BTV box?'
    'Yes'
'OK....in that case, the time is 4pm on Saturday the 3rd of August(for the recording's ease) and I am now asking for a DEADLOCK LETTER.'
;A what?' EXCELLENT....really, the BT training is quite unique....
I explain what a deadlock letter is....I seem to train A LOT of BT employees...probably more, and certainly better than they do...and she goes off to speak to a supervisor.
She tells me I need to phone the billing department...as she can't get through...wow, really? That is odd...I wonder why sh...Ok, yeah BT SPORT.
So, I inform her that I have 'done my duty' and asked for a deadlock letter....and that, as far as I am concerned, is that. I don't actually NEED one...I just have to have asked FOR one...
She then tells me...after several more off telephone conversations...that she will pass my request..it's not a request...to the billing department who will call me back soon....sure they will.
She finally asks me again if I want to be put through to the YV team...and to prove a point, I say yes...after all, the deadlock letter is for the BTV issue and NOT the YV one.
So, I am on hold for about three minutes and they....yup...cut me off.
Undeterred, and as I am now writing this sat at my desk..I press redial...
Call #5: Cut off in 7mins
Call #6: Cut off in 4mins
Call #7: Cut...oh, no...answered in, well, under an hour.....I can't think of a nicer way to put that timeframe, it was some time.
So having repeated myself enough already todday...and for a lifetime with BT over the years, I begin with a probing question....drumroll, please!
    'Are you trained on YV?'
    'Yes I am.'
    PROGRESS???
I explain the faults....and what I have done to fix it. Amazingly, I seem to have hit the BT employee jackpot...I have the anointed one who understands how electrical devices work. He doesn't ask me to turn the YV box off, count to pi squared, whilst herding cats and facing Glasgow...he just has a think about it...
I suggest that he COULD just try a new HDMI cable..this would be OK as a stopgap...maybe we could then narrow the faults down....?
'We don't replace HDMI cables...you'll have to go and buy one.'
Wait, you want ME to go and replace a constituent part of something I BOUGHT from YOU nine months ago....because you 'don't do cables'??
I feel another deadlock letter AND a call to trading standards coming on here....because I ALSO don't 'do' HDMI cables, if 'DO' means go out and buy something that is at the VERY least within the legal minimum warranty period...
However, as we discuss this, and I am about to repeat the 'deadlock dance', he has an epiphany...and for once, I am NOT being sarcastic...honest.
'We could try resetting the YV box back to factory settings.'
'Yes, but won't that wipe out my recordings?'
'No, there's an option to keep the recordings!'
Ok..this is getting scary now...someone from BT who knows something about YV boxes that a customer doesn't?
    'Let's do it.'
He tells me how...the box freezes a couple of times, so I redo it and finally we get it done. Now remember that the fault is intermittent....and I am just about to do that when he says...
'I'll call you back about 7.30 or so.' From this you can see the time elapsed now..it's just gone 5.30 and I started this around 2:00........they do say that patience IS a virtue, right?
So...have I found 'the true golden child' of BT?
    19:20.....the phone rings...wow...seems I have.
    So, to fill you in....
In the intervening 110minutes or so(who's counting?? I AM)
The box has crashed twice...once it just froze, image still on screen, nothing doing after about 10mins leaving ti that way, no sound...however my TV was still receiving SOME kind of signal, cos when it gets a signal it can't interpret it keeps the input (AV1 in this case see below) on the black screen...
Second time it was really odd...the majority of the screen went black and the image went up to the top right...like where it is with PiP when you use the guide etc...but WITH SOUND...now that would have confirmed it wasn't the HDMI cable...had I not already known this...and this was maybe 10mins after the last reboot...
Stupidly, I forgot the YV box can use SCART...it came with an HDMI cable (SEE, PART OF THE PACKAGE I BOUGHT) so I never thought about it until I was typing this...and I changed it about 17:45..before the first crash...
So I relay all this new info, including my SCART confession, and the Golden Child arranges an engineer visit for tuesday a.m. He points out that if the fault is not BT equipment but is in my house I'll have to pay for it...well as I have a photo of the crash with the 'AV1' stuck on the screen, showing the power to the YV box is still there, I'm covered no matter what quality engineer turns up...bear in mind I once had EIGHT engineering visits to fix a slow (less than 0.5Mb download) broadband connection...so I am not worried.
So, as far as the YV box goes, until Tuesday we wait....with breath a baited...
As for the BTV...that's going to arbitration on Monday, with a comment about the HDMI cable issue...the latter also going to trading standards....I'm sure those upstanding fellows will feel my pain...
A final point....for those of you wonderinf if I made up the BTV box problem, or misrepresented it in some way...I did not; the reason I have one in that state is that I used it for a while to watch BTV On Demand content for a while...the old BTV way of showing the content in the menu made it 1000x easier to find stuff to watch, so I kept them both on for a while...when I came to use it one day...the YV box had received a bad update and I was awaiting the group fix..it was dead. I never reported it as the next day the YV box was fine again....seemed no point torturing myself with an unnecessary 'BT Waltz'....
    * PLEASE NOTE all these conversations are relayed accurately in terms of accuracy of content, not specific words...although I have not embellished or exaggerated them....honest.

Oh I agree that getting service is hard. But patience is required, not attitude

  • Time machine stuck in time "long ago and far away"....

Strange issue I came across today: After a reboot following a hard disc repair (Drive Genius 3) my MacPro is stuck in a time slot of several months ago. All time machine backups (even of yesterday's date stamp) just take me back even further in time. None of my app updates are there - for example, some time ago I purchased iPhoto 11 from the app store - now I can't open my iPhoto library because "it was modified using a newer version of iPhoto". The app store doesn't think I ever purchased anything, even though iPhoto was one of several (some free). Interestingly Aperture 3.0 is there (purchased when it first came out), and all my recent photos are there as well.
Anybody have a clue as to what might be going on?

I may have found the solution, although how this was created is a complete mystery to me. On the drive that was repaired by DriveGenius I found a complete "parallel universe" with all the latest files, folders, apps and everything. I can understand how it might duplicate some of the applications since I tended to keep some of them there, but how it ended up with a complete operating system, home folder, etc. essentially a clone of my root drive???? Booting into that drive got me right back to where I had been a day ago. It would almost suggest that I had been running off that drive all along, but that flies in the face of the Drive Genius repair protocol that does not allow (similar to Diskutility) repair of the drive you are booted from (somewhat obvious since it needs to be unmounted in order to be repaired).
I guess all I have to do now is clone all this back to my usual start-up drive and be done..
Thanks for your efforts! I guess this one is one for the "mark it up as experience" books....I'd still love to hear your opinion on what I might have done or ben doing that could have caused this...

  • Creating a new folder starts up import dialog box...

When I click the plus sign on the folders panel, it takes me to the create folder dialog where I can browse to the location of the new folder.
Sometimes, after clicking OK, LR then starts up the import dialog box with a heap of images to import which I then need to cancel. I should have checked where the images were from but have not thought to do so before this post.
Anyway, is there any functionality in LR that should import images when a new folder is created? I think this happens when I don't have a folder selected...not sure.. away from LR at the moment.
As an aside, I wish you could click the + on the folders panel and LR would create a subfolder at the selected location with the name ready to edit, rather than going to a new dialog and having to browse to the location.

    >"Anyway, is there any functionality in LR that should import images when a new folder is created? I think this happens when I don't have a folder selected...not sure.. away from LR at the moment. "
I can't duplicate this. Whether I have highlighted an existing LR folder or not, clicking the "+" brings up the create folder dialog, I browse to a location and create a subfolder. That folder then becomes a LR folder. If I do have a current LR folder highlighted, the process (or just right clicking on the folder name and choose "Create Folder") brings up the create folder dialog with the current LR folder as the parent. I can create a new folder and it will become a LR subfolder of the highlighted one.
    >"As an aside, I wish you could click the + on the folders panel and LR would create a subfolder at the selected location with the name ready to edit, rather than going to a new dialog and having to browse to the location."
Actually, the new dialog that opens for me (as described above) places me in the selected folder - all I do is click the create folder button in that window and a new subfolder is made. I think the reason LR won't just create a new subfolder without going to a new dialog is that the folders panel lists the "LR folders" which are a parallel universe to the "real folders" on your drive. Perhaps the LR engineers thought that by providing you with the browser/creator dialog, they were giving you more control. Who knows.

  • What are the permitted compression techniques for PDF/A-1?

The PDF/A-1 standard does not specify how compression is performed. What are the permitted compression techniques for PDF/A-1?
The information I have gathered (not sure if all are true)
    LZW should not be used
    JPEG2000 may not be used
Few say, JPEG can be used but its a lossy compression. (PDF standard clearly states lossy compression can't be used)
Also, how to figure out whether a particular file is PDF/A-1a or PDF/A-1b and what kind of compressions are used in that file?
    Thanks in advance.

For better or worse, ISO specifications are written in a language from a parallel universe.    After dealing with ISO standards for a while, you learn what specific words really mean. I should know - I am chair of the ISO PDF/X task force and co-chair of the PDF/VT task force.
The word should does not specify a requirement. PDF/A does not prohibit lossy compression.
JPEG is always a lossy compression. There is a mode of JPEG2000 compression that is indeed lossless. Note that JPEG and JPEG2000 are totally different compression schemes. (I believe that PDF/A-1 as well as PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3, based on older versions of the PDF specification do not permit JPEG2000. PDF/A-2 based on ISO32000-1 and PDF/X-4 based on PDF 1.6 do allow for JPEG2000.)
    ZIP compression is lossless.

  • SFC and System Restore errors on Surface Pro 3 running Win 8.1

Yesterday evening, my boss sent me an email complaining about problems mapping network drives (Server 2008r2) and connecting to the office LAN after setting up offline files. He tried troubleshooting to no avail. I suggested SFC.exe and/or a systems

  • Where does my info go after I import in time machine?

I can't find my documents, users, etc.  Where is it all?

    Where is it all?
    In a parallel universe......
Sorry I couldn't resist, but it's not all that far from reality....
Are you just trying to see your doc files in Time Machine or actually trying to restore them back to your internal HD?

  • "copy and paste" not working only offers "cut"

I have a client working on an 11" MacBook Air purchased early this year reporting that she cannot access copy and paste across applications:
"At the moment I can’t COPY anything in Word or indeed any other documents, including emails etc.  Driving me mad.  Only the CUT option comes up - and as I’m working against a deadline… "
And she also reports this issue with Apple Mail which seems to have lost its preference file settings:
"Also bloody Mail programme has now changed its layout and everything is bloody FIXED - so I can’t move it about the screen while I dig up another document I need to refer to.  It wasn’t like this before… again very labour intensive and irritating. I have to use my online Google mail to get around this resistance… "
I have suggested that she uses Disk Utility to repair permissions on her Hard Disk and then restart in Safe Mode to see whether Copy and Paste is restored and also that Mail is back in order, through a corrupted Preference file may require resetting.
Any body else seen any of these symptoms or have any thoughts as to a cause and a possible solution. At the back of my mind is the thought that she may have been hit by a Trojan. I'm reminded of the strange symptoms experienced by clients using MS Office when the Flashback Trojan struck in 2012.
    Any help appreciated.

I have found various other explanations – still following links discovered through DuckDuckGo – raising the possibility that other utilities may be interfering, such as Koteri for those switching between English and Japanese and perhaps the most likely explanation, that my client has accidentally engaged some element of the Accessibility controls.
For the Koteri explanation see this Microsoft Community Forum response:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2008-macpowerpoint/cannot- paste-objects-in-powerpoint-2008-for-mac/7d0f7bbf-dc49-4496-b1fd-2a4cf36b12f7
For the Accessibility thought about the activation of Mouse Keys see this Ask Different Forum response:

If you have ever inadvertently engaged keyboard zoom you will know how odd the Mac feels with such changed behaviours in place. Perhaps my client did thunder on the option key 5 times in a moment of frustration and make the leap into a parallel universe where the reassurance of Copy and Paste does not apply.
I'll report back once I've investigated further.

  • Sharing movies after re-installing iMovie 5

Gratefully found you guys the other day as crisis unfolded. Realised from reading here that problem with editing my movie was iLife '06. I'd installed it mid-project as well. Slapped wrist, lesson learned. Followed recipe to re-install 5. Went well. Then found another post to solve my stereo-to-mono issues on the movie. But couldn't send movie to Garageband without iLife '06. Re-installed it to try (i know, i know, I'm learning.) Definitely not good. So ducked out and decided to go back to iMovie 5, re-installed from CD. Movie finished, I go to export/share it to Video Camera. It won't share. With anything. From the Maxtor or the desktop. It'll burn a DVD when I go to iDVD within the iMovie programme. But if I click the Share tab in the menu, absolutely nothing at all happens.

    Matt,
We must be operating in parallel universes. Did same thing this week. However, I had a little bit better luck-sort of. iMovie kicked out a staggering and fragmented version of my project when I tried to share it with my camera. Totally unuseable.
What's more, it didn't respond to simple start or stop commands.
After a long conversation with an Apple online genius, it all boiled down to this. iMovie 6 with the qurtz effects is generaly too much for the G4 to handle. He recommended shorter projects and to forget trying to share to mini DV.
As for Garage band. That was a dismal failure. I'll stick with creating tracks separately and then adding it to the movie project without GB's scoring feature. It's a nice idea but it's not working with my G4.

  • Popup not INSERTing into table and not refreshing called page ...

    Greetings
Environment: APEX 3.1.1.00.09 on AIX 5.3 in 10gR2
I have read many of the threads concerning my issue and I feel I am getting close to the answer but somehow have combined too many of the suggestions and am tripping over my own code.
Please look at my sample application on apex.oracle.com:
    Workspace: galway
    User: gwicke
    Password: gwicke
Please start with Page3, select any Agency and then click 'Add New Contract'.
There is currently a <strong>BOLD </strong>label 'Add New Builder' that is a link that should open a popup window. Type any name into the field and click 'Create Builder'. This should INSERT the row into the builder table, close the popup, assign the new builder name to the calling page item 'Builder Name' and populate the screen item.
In it's current state, the application will open the popup window, allow entry and close upon clicking the 'Create Builder' button. However the new builder is NOT inserted into the table and the calling page item is not populated.
By looking at the Page Items and Session State I can see the correct values assigned to the 'Pn_BULDER_NAME' items on both the popup page (4) and the calling page (2) but the value does not appear on the screen.
I've read where there's really two parallel universes, no sorry, two versions of the screen items, one in Session State and one that is displayed in the browser and there are steps to take to be sure the one displayed is updated from Session State as I would like in this case.
I've entered Javascript code in the Page4 - header to define the 'passBack2()' function and code in the 'Optional URL Redirect' section of the 'Add Builder' button to hopefully execute the ARP for the INSERT, assign the Page2 items and close the popup. It doesn't quite get all that done.
Any helpp is greatly appreciated. Thanks to Denes for most of the code suggestions I've followed.

    Hi Gary,
I think that there's a very simple solution to this - didn't really spot it last night.
Firstly, yes, you could use a "button" to handle the call for the popup - just make sure that the button is a URL type "button" that is actually an A tag with the call in the URL target setting. Alternatively, you could take you existing A tag and use the same class attribute for one of your buttons as this should make it look like a button.
More importantly, though, I think that we could do it as:
1 - On your page 2 popup call, clear that cache for page 4 (the popup page) - I have already done this in your app by updating the url
2 - On the popup page, allow the user to enter in their desired P4_BUILDER_NAME value (not sure if you want to do something to make this unique?)
3 - Let the user click the Create button on the popup. This will submit the page, which will get your P4_BUILDER_RANK (the pk) value and insert a new record into the table (you could consider creating a sequence and a trigger to handle the creation of a new PK value?).
4 - Assuming the P4_BUILDER_RANK then exists (it wouldn't if there was an error somewhere), then conditionally display a region that had a piece of javascript that submits page 2 and then closes itself - we don't need to pass anything back to page 2 (see below)
5 - As the P4_BUILDER_NAME and P4_BUILDER_RANK exist in the session, when page 2 is being reloaded, (A) the select list would be updated with the new Builder (still not sure why all my entries appeared at the bottom instead of in alpha order??) and (B) both P2_BUILDER_NAME and P2_BUILDER_RANK can have Post Calculation Computations set (NVL(:P4_BUILDER_NAME,:P2_BUILDER_NAME) and NVL(:P4_BUILDER_RANK, :P2_BUILDER_RANK) respectively) - the effect of this is, if there are values stored in the P4 page items, we use them, otherwise we use whatever values were in the P2 page items
6 - Finally, to stop (5) happening in all page 2 loads, you would need to clear the cache for page 4 in as many places as possible - eg, branches to page 2 or buttons on page 2
The reason we can't pass values back to page 2 is that one of the items is a select list. The value we want to select won't appear on the select list until the page has been submitted. So, we can't set the value and submit because the value isn't there. We can't submit and set the value because javascript wouldn't know when the page has been updated (or, at least, you would have to put some independant mechanism in place to identify this, which may become complicated).
So, simply put, as long as we know that if the values are in the session, we can use Post Calculation Computations to set our fields to these values. The only thing to bear in mind is that we need to ensure that these session values only exist when we need them - hence clearing the cache. This principle should work for any type of field - but, as you have no doubt seen, simple text fields can be updated by the popup directly as the field should accept any value we give it.
My only other recommendation would be to completely remove the MRU processes from the page as these are not required (they just confuse the issue) and you could make your PK fetch and record insert into a single process - just to keep things neat and tidy, you understand!
When I finished with your app last night, I did leave it so that javascript would create a new option on the select list and then set the value. But the above methodology seems to be a lot simpler.

  • Broken Keyboard Clip :p

Okay, so I wanted to replace the keyboard in my laptop. It's an HP Pavilion DV5-2077cl. I went over the steps in the service manual and all. However, like an idiot, I was fuzzy on how to actually disconnect it from the motherboard. I accidentally pulled the clip out of the socket and (as with most things that move in a direction that is away from me) it ended up lost in an alternate dimension/parallel universe, never to be seen again. I need to locate this part. I've searched everywhere looking for it to no avail. I even looked for scrap motherboards, but I was SOL. So now my only option is to reach out and ask just where I can go to find this 1 inch piece of plastic that's causing me so much pain. If nothing, is there any way to connect it without the clip that doesn't involve super glue, Krazy Glue, or any kind of gluing for that matter? Even so, I'm even willing to go as far as to replace the motherboard, but is that even worth it?

Unfortunately if the clip is lost or broken, then acquiring a new motherboard or a used one is the only solution. I looked around on e-bay and there were no spare parts one available, just working ones. Here is one which takes an AMD processor.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Pavilion-DV5-2000-598225-001-AMD-Motherboard-TESTED-/120763998845?pt=Moth... This guy only ships to Canada and the US, but if our feed back is 100% many sellers will make an exception.
Make sure the part numbers matches, you will find it under the memory sticks ounce they're removed.
Here is the search where I got it from.

Your specs show you are running an AMD processor.

  • Copy Images: Too simple?

Ok, just spent several hours selecting a group of images from numerous directories. Now all I want to do is to copy these 150 images (Quick Collection) to an external hard drive.
Must be missing something, as drag/drop doesn't seem to be an option, and "Export" prompts me for Format, Quality, Color Space, Resolution etc. etc. I don't want to convert anything, I just want to move all these selected images to a new directory on this external hard drive.
    What am I missing?

    >"But to get back to my initial (and remaining issue) the only thing I want to figure out how to do is, after spending hours coming up with a custom selection, copy these files to an external hard drive or a folder of my choosing on my internal drive. "
    >"This has got to be DAM 101 stuff? "
I think the problem at this point in LR's development is that it is not a system-folder based DAM. LR is a black box - you import files into it and export files from it. During the Betas, LR did not organize imported data using a "folder" paradigm, it used "shoots". Now, it imports and maintains a folder structure that parallels the system's folders, but don't confuse this with a file browser. It just keeps a parallel universe of folders internally. At this point, LR does not "watch" its folders for changes in the system folders.
Inside LR's black box, you can move files from one LR folder to another, and LR will also move the actual files on disk. But you are asking it to "copy" which 1) doesn't follow the LR philosophy of maintaining one unique master file in its system, and 2) if the destination of the copy is outside the LR folder hierarchy, then LR can't handle it at this time.
Considering Adobe changed from shoots to folders from Beta4 to version 1, I expect the DAM functionality to be limited at this time. I would hope that in the future Adobe will extend its current LR folders vs. system folders to more closely match system folders. If they were to do this, then we'd have a better chance of getting watched folders and performing system file management. I would suspect that this is not as easy as it appears, since LR is tied to a database. Everytime you change folders and the files they contain externally, LR would have to do a lot of work to bring the database up to date.
