Parameters in init.ora not changing in DB

Oracle 9.0.0 Redhat 7.2
Trying to set up utl_file_dir in the init.ora file and, although
the entry in the init.ora looks correct (utl_file_dir=/tmp/xxx),
the value for utl_file_dir in sqlplus (show parameters utl)
never sees the value (ie always shows nothing). Same with other
params in the init.ora. If I rename the init.ora file, the DB
doesn't start, so I'm changing the correct file.
Maybe Oracle is finding something it doesn't like in the
init.ora file and aborting reading the file??
Is there a way to see what oracle's doing with the init.ora file
as it loads?
Thx Martin ([email protected])

There is a new feature with 9i that you can change init.ora
parameters without bouncing the instance, these parameters are
store in a file (spfile).
See the documentation about this feature.

• Init.ora file changes

Hi,
I changed the init.ora file for some reason and I have applied some patches in OS(microsoft windows 2003 server) and i noticed in the init.ora file that all changes in the init.ora file gone !!
Can someone explain me, what was the reason behind that ?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
<humor>You have to check urgently for the green little pfile changer halfling!</humor>
Seriously.. did you do both at the same time? If so... are you sure you save the init file? Cause there's no way such changes are rolled back except if you did not saved the file... or restored an old version of your pfile!

• Init.ora not found.

I want to give a different initialisation parameter in init.ora file. I am using Oracle 10g. I am not able to fine init.ora in Ora home. I have given a complete search like *.ora in Ora home. Still it is not showing that init.ora file. Can anybody help me?

I want to use utl_file package and write a text file. I want that text file to be stored in my local machine. The init.ora parameter in the Oracle database server points to the Server path.Also Some 50 oraclients are installed for that DB server and each of us want to have our own local machine path for the text file to be created.Is there a way of doing this?

Fellow Experts,
Are there any other parameters that I need to insert in the init.ora besides QUERY_REWRITE_ENABLED

• Evolution of init.ora parameters

Hi Gurus,
Can someone name the milestones (or important) in the evolution of parameters in init.ora file. I knew for every release certain parameters are relegated, or replaced and few are introduced as new and ofcourse for some the default values are changed. I want to understand the most important changes Oracle has come up at 8i, 9i, 10g and 11g releases.

# This file is provided by Oracle Corporation to help you customize
# your RDBMS installation for your site. Important system parameters
# are discussed, and example settings given.
# Some parameter settings are generic to any size installation.
# For parameters that require different values in different size
# installations, three scenarios have been provided: SMALL, MEDIUM
# and LARGE. Any parameter that needs to be tuned according to
# installation size will have three settings, each one commented
# according to installation size.
# Use the following table to approximate the SGA size needed for the
# three scenarious provided in this file:
# -------Installation/Database Size------
# SMALL MEDIUM LARGE
# Block 2K 4500K 6800K 17000K
# Size 4K 5500K 8800K 21000K
# To set up a database that multiple instances will be using, place
# all instance-specific parameters in one file, and then have all
# of these files point to a master file using the IFILE command.
# This way, when you change a public
# parameter, it will automatically change on all instances. This is
# necessary, since all instances must run with the same value for many
# parameters. For example, if you choose to use private rollback segments,
# these must be specified in different files, but since all gc_*
# parameters must be the same on all instances, they should be in one file.

There are strange things in the file you posted, are you sure that's your init.ora ? where did you find it ?
Moreover, you use "cat" to list the file, but you name "c:\dir" the directory : what is your OS ?
Furthermore, if you use directories, then you don't need to set utl_file_dir in init.ora, and directories don't show up within parameters, you can see them by
SQL> select * from all_directories;

• Setting of init.ora file for 500 users

how to set diffrents parameters in init.ora file
for 500 user
(hybrid system)(oltp+dss)
thanks

Yeah, it depends and you will need to adjust thoses parameters during the "life" of the database.
I give you some of my thoughts (that's just thoughts, not a rule => there is no perfect rule) :
500 users = Unix box i guess so :
If MTS (dont think u need MTS for 500 users) => SGA = 75% of the RAM of the server
If NOT MTS (dedicated processes) => SGA = 50% of the RAM
Say 2GB of RAM on no MTS :
buffer cache = 900 MB
shared pool = 100MB to 200 MB
sort_area_size = 256KB
something like 50 to 100 RBS (depends on how many users are connected simultaneously)
for the users which will not do some OLTP operations, you should make few BIG RBS and assign their transactions to them. for thoses users, you probably need a bigger sort_area_size.
all the tablespaces LOCALLY MANAGED
backup with RMAN

• Detect Note Changes in MIDI Sequencer

Hi all,
I’m trying to detect when the MIDI Sequencer changes notes using some kind of a listener to detect when the note changes occur. My example program is able to detect the end of the sequence and I’d like to be able to detect note changes and print a message in a similar way. Here is my example code.
import javax.swing.*;
import javax.sound.midi.*;
public class SequencerTestApplet extends JApplet
public void init()
SequencerTest seqTest = new SequencerTest();
seqTest.play();
System.out.println("Print from init()");
class SequencerTest
Sequencer sequencer=null;
Sequence seq=null;
Track track=null;
public SequencerTest()
try
{   sequencer = MidiSystem.getSequencer();
sequencer.open();
// detect END OF SEQUENCE
sequencer.addMetaEventListener(
new MetaEventListener()
{   public void meta(MetaMessage m)
{  if (m.getType() == 47) System.out.println("SEQUENCE FINISHED");
sequencer.setTempoInBPM(40);
seq = new Sequence(Sequence.PPQ, 16);
track = seq.createTrack();
catch (Exception e) { }
public void play()
try
{    // NOTE 1
ShortMessage noteOnMsg = new ShortMessage();
noteOnMsg.setMessage(ShortMessage.NOTE_ON, 0, 60, 93);
track.add(new MidiEvent(noteOnMsg, 0));
ShortMessage noteOffMsg = new ShortMessage();
noteOffMsg.setMessage(ShortMessage.NOTE_OFF, 0, 60, 93);
track.add(new MidiEvent(noteOffMsg, 16));
// NOTE 2
ShortMessage noteOnMsg2 = new ShortMessage();
noteOnMsg2.setMessage(ShortMessage.NOTE_ON, 0, 68, 93);
track.add(new MidiEvent(noteOnMsg2, 16));
ShortMessage noteOffMsg2 = new ShortMessage();
noteOffMsg2.setMessage(ShortMessage.NOTE_OFF, 0, 68, 93);
track.add(new MidiEvent(noteOffMsg2, 32));
sequencer.setSequence(seq);
sequencer.start();
catch (Exception e) { }
}In this program the init() method starts the sequencer through the play() method and then continues on so that the “print from init()” statement is printed from the init() method while the sequencer is still playing. Then after the sequencer is finished, it uses the MetaEventListener to detect the end of the sequence and print the “sequence finished” message. I’d like to be able to make it also detect when the sequence changes notes in a similar way... Start the sequence and move on, but then be able to detect each time a note change occurs and print a message.
Since I am putting the notes at specific midi ticks (multiples of 16, or “quarter notes”) I could poll the Sequencer using getTickPosition() to see if the Sequencer’s tick position matches a particular multiple of 16. However, the problem with this is it would lock up the program since it would be constantly polling the sequencer and the program wouldn’t be able to do anything else while the Sequencer is playing (and I also have a loop option for the Sequencer so that would lock up the program indefinitely).
Here’s what I’ve found out and tried so far...
I read in this [this tutorial|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/sound/MIDI-seq-adv.html] on the java sun site (under “Specifying Special Event Listeners”) that The Java Sound API specifies listener interfaces for control change events (for pitch-bend wheel, data slider, etc.) and meta events (for tempo change commands, end-of-track, etc.) but it says nothing about detecting note changes (note on/off). Also in the [EventListener API|http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/api/java/util/class-use/EventListener.html] (under javax.sound.midi) it only lists the ControllerEventListener and the MetaEvenListener.
I also read here that MIDI event listeners listen for the end of the MIDI stream, so again no info about detecting note changes.
It seems like the sequencer should have some way of sending out messages (in some fashion) when these note changes happen, but I’m not sure how or even if it actually does. I’ve looked and looked and everything seems to be coming back to just these two types of listeners for MIDI so maybe it doesn’t.
To be sure the MetaEventListener doesn’t detect note changes I changed the MetaMessage from:
public void meta(MetaMessage m)
{    if (m.getType() == 47) System.out.println("SEQUENCER FINISHED");
}to:
public void meta(MetaMessage m)
{    System.out.println("" + m.getType());
}so that it would print out all of the MetaMessages it receives. The only message that printed was “47” which indicates the end of the sequence. So the MetaEventListener doesn’t appear to do what I need it to do.
I realize this is a rather odd problem and probably not many people have had the need to do something like this, but it never hurts to ask. If anyone has any suggestions on how to solve this problem it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-tkr

As another idea, since I can't do it with a listener like I originally wanted to, would adding a separate thread to poll the sequencer and send an interrupt when it matches a particular midi tick be a good route to try? My thinking is this essentially act kind of like a listener by running in the background and reporting back when it changes notes.Yep, that worked! :)

else
print = true;
}I put in several print statements (with pauses in the init method) and the init print statements continue to be printed while the sequencer is playing, so it's not locking up the system and the "note change" statements happen when the sequencer changes notes. So this part is working perfectly! :)
Here's what I got for my output:
Sequencer Started
Print from init() 1
Thread Started
NOTE CHANGE
Print from init() 2
NOTE CHANGE
Print from init() 3
SEQUENCER FINISHED
Print from init() 4
The only problem I'm having is how to "throw" this action back up to the main init method and have it do the print statement instead of the thread class. Throwing an interrupt apparently won't work as you have to poll it to see if it has been interrupted (so it'd be no different than just polling the sequencer to see if it equals the specific midi tick). Maybe throw an ActionEvent? But how to attach it to my applet? Would I need to create an instance of my applet and then pass that into the thread class so it can catch the ActionEvent? And if I do that will it stop the thread or will it keep the thread running so can detect the other notes?... Or is there a better/simpler way to do this?
Thanks again,

• Are there any init.ora parameters which can't be changed at all ?

DB version: 11gR2
We have the following two types of initialization parameters
Dynamic - Which can be changed without a DB bounce (example CURSOR_SHARING)
Static - Which can be changed only with a DB bounce (example MEMORY_MAX_TARGET )
Both types of init parameters mentioned above can be changed with or without a DB bounce. Are there any initialization parameters which cannot be changed at all with or without a DB bounce?

Max wrote:
Oracle documentation which describes init.ora parameters is 'Oracle Database Reference 11gRelease 2'. It doesn't answer my question
Maybe it does.
from DB_BLOCK_SIZE
The value for DB_BLOCK_SIZE in effect at the time you create the database determines the size of the blocks. The value must remain set to its initial value.

• Init.ora file parameter 'processses' not working

When I change the number of processes in my init.ora file from the default of 30 to 200, I get an error when accessing from SQLPlus that Oracle cannot be found. I run Oracle 8.1.6i on a Solaris v7 platform. Any suggestions???

I think your database could not "be found"
'cause it isn't up.
Change the init.ora file parameter 'processses' to 'processes' and restart
the database.
Oracle refuses starting up, if there are
mistyped parameters in init<SID>.ora.

• Init.ora setting not effective after shutdown/startup

Hi there,
I've set optimizer_features_enable = 8.1.7 (both lower caps and upper caps) in init.ora
After shutting down oracle and starting up again,
show parameter opt still shows 9.2.0
SQL> show parameter opt
NAME TYPE VALUE
filesystemio_options string asynch
object_cache_optimal_size integer 102400
optimizer_dynamic_sampling integer 1
optimizer_features_enable string 9.2.0
optimizer_index_caching integer 0
optimizer_index_cost_adj integer 100
optimizer_max_permutations integer 2000
optimizer_mode string CHOOSE
I've to change other parameters e.g. shared_pool_size in the same init.ora file and it's effective after shutdown/restart.
Please advise how to set optimizer_features_enable.

9.x has something called SPFILE also...
SQL> show parameter spfile
If it shows a file name value, something like spfilesid.ora, changes to init.ora would make not much difference :)

• Init.ora parameters

Hi,
Which init.ora parameters are respond for write data from cache to redo logs files? It is possible to set this parameter as time or rather for cache usage?

Dear,
The purpose of redo generation is to ensure recoverability. This is the reason why, Oracle does not give the DBA a lot of control over redo generation. If the instance crashes, then all the changes within SGA will be lost. Oracle will then use the redo entries in the online redo files to bring the database to a consistent state.

ora11g:/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1:Y
NOW QUESTIONS!!!!!
1. Why I can't change the status of database to OPEN as grid user?
2. The status is always STARTED when querying v$instance. İs it status of +ASM or database?
3. When checking database as grid user it seems to be Database runnning... If running why it is not in OPEN state? What is running means here?
4. When I log on as oracle user and query v$instance, then error shown above occured. And also when startup the database then another error occured as in above. WHY?
5. When I edit /etc/oratab file manually why second row saved but the first one is changed after restart the system?
6. Normally, which user have to start, stop or manage database? I think that oracle user is necessary for managing database and the grid user is only for managing ASM and Oracle Restart.
PLEASE HELP ME TO SOLVE THIS CHAOTİC SİTUATİON!!!
Thanks,
DBA_84

I have installed an Oracle 11gR2 on Oracle Linux Server 6.6 (Virtualbox)
Pl identify exact version of 11gR2 to 4 decimal places. As noted in your other thread - Failed to start oracle-ohasd, error: Inappropriate ioctl for device ohasd failed to start at roothas.pl - you will need a minimum version of 11.2.0.3 for Linux 6.x - using a lower version may result in unexpected issues or problems.

• How to make changes in the init.ora stick through Autoconfig?

I make a change to my init.ora file and then when I run Autoconfig it overwrites my change. How can I keep this from happening?

Hi Hussein;
I reviewed the note, thanks. I then made a change to my init.ora file in %ORACLE_HOME%\database (I am on windows) then I ran the "adautocfg.cmd" in my %ORACLE_HOME%\appsutil\scripts\[SID]_[server] directory and it replaced my init.ora file. It did not change it as the file date does not show today but the values I put in are gone.
So then I made a change to the init.ora file in %ORACLE_HOME%\dbs and ran adautocfg.cmd again. What it does is replaces the init.ora file in %ORACLE_HOME%\database with the one from %ORACLE_HOME%\dbs.
