Paravirtualized OpenSolaris

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has installed a Paravirtualized OpenSolaris on OVM. I tried to install one using OVM Manager and get the following error:
"2010-07-28 16:25:08" ERROR=> install_vm_para: vm('/OVS/running_pool/170_osol0906')=><Exception: failed:<Exception: ['virt-install', '--paravirt', '--name=170_osol0906', '--ram=1024', '--vcpus=1', '--vnc', '--vnclisten=0.0.0.0', '--vncpasswd=/tmp/tmptUtbS1', '--noautoconsole', '--location=nfs:172.18.1.19:/sans1/swimages/solaris/osol0906', '--keymap=en-us', '--mac=00:16:3E:1E:45:72', '--bridge=xenbr0', '--file=/var/ovs/mount/23EA2AC5419F42DC8F432422790512BF/running_pool/170_osol0906/System.img', '--file-size=32.0'] => ERROR: Invalid NFS location given: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/var/lib/xen/xennfs.hr7HbY/images/xen/vmlinuz'
I can mount the NFS path fine:
[root@ovm2 ~]# mount 172.18.1.19:/sans1/swimages/solaris/osol0906 /mnt
[root@ovm2 ~]# ls /mnt
bin dev jack platform reconfigure save solaris.zlib tmp
boot devices mnt proc root solarismisc.zlib system
[root@ovm2 ~]#
Thanks very much in advance
Albert

OK, I was able to trick OVM Manager to create the VM by creating images/xen and copy kernel and macroroot to the directory, then rename them to vmlinuz and initrd.img respectively:
root@nfs1:/sans1/swimages/solaris/osol0906 $ mkdir -p images/xen
root@nfs1:/sans1/swimages/solaris/osol0906 $ images/xen
root@nfs1:/sans1/swimages/solaris/osol0906 $ cp x86.microroot images/xen/initrd.img
root@nfs1:/sans1/swimages/solaris/osol0906 $ cp unix images/xen/vmlinuz
However, I got boot loader didn't return any data when power it up:
2010-07-29 16:41:59.821 WARNING [PowerOn][osol0906]: Result - failed:<Exception: return=>failed:<Exception: ['xm', 'create', '/var/ovs/mount/23EA2AC5419F42DC8F432422790512BF/running_pool/178_osol0906/vm.cfg'] => Error: Boot loader didn't return any data!
According to http://foss-boss.blogspot.com/2009/06/opensolaris-200906-pv-under-xen-centos5.html, I need to add the following to the installation configuration file:
extra = "/platform/i86xpv/kernel/amd64/unix - nowin -B install_media=cdrom"
anyone has idea on how to do that?

  • New to solaris what should I be downloading solaris 10 or opensolaris?

    well I have some experience with redhat but want to learn solaris as, well I really will never be able to get a linux/unix position if I only know one. hmm so I started looking around and got confused by the many versions now available of solaris. so after bout an hour is seems like...
    1) the solaris 10 os is released for free
    2) there are multiple solaris's based off this code but the one solaris is pushing is the opensolaris 2008.05.
    in my mind I figure that solaris loosely relates to redhat then and opensolaris loosely relates to fedora.
    so here are my questions.
    I see solaris is "free" but I can't figure out exactly what that means. I know for instance that me sitting at home at night learning will not be able to call or email sun for support (too bad that would be sweet). but once installed can I get applications, use the sun software installation system (whatever would be like yum to redhat) to get software, will it be from a repo sponsored by sun? also how would I update the system. for instance I see a new version of solairs will be out in late october. do I have to do a complete reinstall or can I just plop in a new cd and hit "upgrade" (or something of that nature). basically I guess I am saying what am I missing by getting solaris free without support. is it just tech support or is it updates and software.
    secondly, would opensolaris be a better option. the reason I am apprehensive is because based on some reviews I have read it is not supported by much hardware and is buggy. I really don't want to waist time downloading and installing this if regular old solaris 10 is the better option. thanks you much for helping a newbie out. I have a seconds pc waiting for this and remember it is basically so I can get up to speed so my solaris unix will be on par with my quite limited linux experience. thanks again...

With Solaris you can use the Solaris Companion CD to get a few of the more generic programs or you can use sites such as Blastwave, SunFreeWare, Package Archive etc... to add more software of you can always compile from source.
    OpenSolaris has a pkg install command which is analogous to yum and contains a lot more software then the Solaris Companion CD. If you hunt around you can get a list of all software that pkg install can install to your system.
    also how would I update the system. for instance I see a new version of solairs will be out in late october. do I have to do a complete reinstall or can I just plop in a new cd and hit "upgrade" (or something of that nature). basically I Plop in the DVD and hit "upgrade" or you can do fancy things like live upgrade if you plan in advance.
    guess I am saying what am I missing by getting solaris free without support. is it just tech support or is it updates and software. Patches that aren't labeled as critical or security, phone support, etc... are not part of "free" Solaris.
    secondly, would opensolaris be a better option. the reason I am apprehensive is because based on some reviews I have read it is not supported by much hardware and is buggy. There is a device detection tool that can be used for either OS so you can see in advance if your hardware is probably supported. OpenSolaris contains programs that are generally more current then those that are offered by Solaris.

  • Cannot install Windows 2003 as paravirtualized VM

    Hello,
    I'm trying to install Windows 2003 as a paravirtualized VM but I get:
    Starting install...
    ERROR: Invalid NFS location given: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/var/lib/xen/xennfs.0J0NeF/images/xen/vmlinuz'
    Before doing this I installed a CentOS paravirtualized VM without problems. I'm doing the same but changing the CentOS ISO for the Windows ISO. I've read some threads about this and the answer was that Windows cannot be installed as a paravirtualized VM. But these threads were old (1 o 2 years) and I think that now it's possible to install Windows as a PVM.
    Please, can anybody help me??
    Thanks.

    Let me explain...
    There are two Pools: One ( A ) that can execute guests in HVM and the other ( B ) that only can execute guests in PVM. I have moved some Linux VM from A to B without problems (well, I had some problems but I solved it easily). But by now is imposible to do the same with Windows VM.
    I created the Windows VM in the A pool as HVM and installed the PV drivers. Atfer doing it the VM config file content is:
    acpi = 1
    apic = 1
    bootloader = '/usr/bin/pygrub'
    builder = 'hvm'
    device_model = '/usr/lib/xen/bin/qemu-dm'
    disk = ['file:/var/ovs/mount/501740958A2C4EFC9482E5F3A1E6F282/running_pool/Chronos2/System.img,hda,w',
    +',hdc:cdrom,r',+
    +]+
    kernel = '/usr/lib/xen/boot/hvmloader'
    keymap = 'es'
    memory = '2048'
    name = 'Chronos2'
    on_crash = 'restart'
    on_reboot = 'restart'
    pae = 1
    serial = 'pty'
    timer_mode = '0'
    usbdevice = 'tablet'
    uuid = '20bb90fb-a8e1-4dfb-a1d1-450e669dd9eb'
    vcpus = 2
    vif = ['bridge=xenbr0,mac=00:16:3E:**:**:**,type=netfront']
    vif_other_config = []
    vnc = 1
    vncconsole = 1
    vnclisten = '0.0.0.0'
    vncpasswd = '******'
    vncunused = 1
    If I try to run it in A the VM runs as HVM. If I change builder = 'hvm' to builder = 'pvm' and try to run in A I get:
    Error: Boot loader didn't return any data!
    If I try to run it in B (moving the VM previously and changing the disk location in the config file) I get :
    Error: HVM guest support is unavailable: is VT/AMD-V supported by your CPU and enabled in your BIOS?
    And if I try to run it in B changing builder = 'hvm' to builder = 'pvm' then I get:
    Error: Acquire running lock failed: 256
    Well, and now I don't know what else can I do.
    Have anybody installed a Windows VM as PV (using PV drivers) in Oracle VM successfully?
    Thank you.

  • How to install Windows in Paravirtualized Mode

    Hi,
    I have succesfully create virtual machines in Full Virtualized mode and WinXP as OS.
    Since the performances are weird, I would like to create a PV machine with Windows.
    I mounted the image inside the Server, and then I gave access to the mount point via FTP to VM Manager to create the VM, but I get an error when it starts creating the machine.
    Can someone help me ?

You should install the PV drivers for Windows which at least will improve disk and network performance. You can download the PV drivers from E-Delivery. • How do i install opensolaris without using the virtual box??

    hi.
    i am new to solaris
    i am currently using a windows XP OS
    i got down the opensolaris cd from SUN
    how do i install opensolaris without using a virtual box ?

    The OpenSolaris CD is a "Live CD". You can boot off of the CD, and either run the OpenSolaris operating system directly, or you can select the "Install" icon on the LiveCD desktop. You can find full instructions here: http://dlc.sun.com/osol/docs/content/IPS/getst1.html
    Do you want to keep your Windows OS on the disk? If so, then you want to follow the instructions for partitioning your disk (unless you already have a spare partition).

  • 64-Bit PCI space on OpenSolaris

    ** As a disclaimer, I am working on OpenSolaris, not Solaris, so I am not sure if this is the right place to post. **
    Hello,
    I've been trying a new feature on my BIOS that allows to memory map PCI device registers to spaces above 4G.
    However, when I booted in Solaris, it failed to load some devices, and pci_boot also reported:
    "unsupported 64-bit prefetch memory on pci-pci bridge [%d/%d/%d]" (copy pasted that line from pci_boot.c)
    Digging further I also found some comments in npe.c in a register mapping function:
    case PCI_ADDR_MEM64:
         * We can't handle 64-bit devices that are mapped above
         * 4G or that are larger than 4G.
    I am in the process of rewriting the driver code right now, but I am wondering how deep will I have to go or if a fix already exists in Solaris.
    If you are wondering why I need all this, it is because I have a device that requires a very large space of prefetchable memory (>4G) and I need those BIOS settings to make it boot.
    Thanks

    Remember that by definition, the bus is an interrupt driven mechanism, and if each HBA is attempting an operation, it gets the bus for a time slice to the exclusion of the other HBAs. Sounds like your servers are trying to pump a lot of data through one bus, and having a lot of contention doing so.
    You should see if the servers have a split bus structure. For example, some servers have a bus for PCI slots 0-3, then another separate bus for slots 4-7, etc. You'd have to dig out the specs to determine this. Placing your HBAs across these separate buses might eliminate the contention you are seeing (for example, HBA0 and 1 would go into slots 0, 1, then HBA2 and 3 would go into slots 4,5).

  • Paravirtualized machine hanging (VM Server 2.1, NFS based repository)

    Hi,
    I have a problem with a VM server.
    I have local disks, that are kind of slow (initially my images were on OCFS2 based /OVS, after some problem with it wi migrated /OVS to ext3), but because of insufficient space we want to use NFS.
    I created an NFS repository with:
    /usr/lib/ovs/ovs-makerepo 172.16.32.51:/lv_raid5_fs1/OVS 1 raid5_nfs
    then I created a HVM wirtual machine with OEL4U5 (using installation from ISO images) - it works relatively fine (it hanged just once).
    I tried creating a PVM from the template OVM_EL4U5_X86_PVM_10GB.
    I did that using Oracle VM Manager. The template was created, and after the Power On command the VM started.
    I then wanted to test disk operations performance with simple
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/root/test_prs.dat bs=1048576 count=3000
    but it actually hanged (domU hanged, the iostat command that I had started continue to work though - showing no IO operations were going on, but iowait is 100%.
    Also xentop in dom0 hanged - it didn't refresh for 12 hours.
    The whole dom0 doesn't respond to new ssh requests (the existing one with xentop is not closed).
    The domU with the PVM allowed me to run some commands in another open sheel via ssh, but then it hang also..
    The NFS server I am using is a SLES9 SP3 + online updates (2.6.5-7.276-bigsmp). It is attached to SCSI Storage array.
    The exportfs options are "(rw,wdelay,no_root_squash)". The exported filesystem is reiserfs.
    The mount options in dom0 are "vers=3,tcp", I cannot find them all right now, because the dom0 is hanged.
    the connection between NFS client and server is 1Gbit.
    NFS Server hasn't shown any errors.
    The last screen from xentop is below:
    xentop - 19:31:19 Xen 3.1.1

    Now my time is 11:26:00 (so more than 15 hours - no refresh of the screen). We've seen such a behaviour previously, but after 20-30 minutes it all started working again.
    What can I do to improve the situation? What could be the problem?
    Please help...
    Regards,
    Mihail Daskalov

    Hi,
    1) What does it mean "supported" - there are no specific requirements published. As I said my "filer" is another Linux machine which is exporting a file system via NFS.
    2) I already tested the NFS using another real machine (not a virtualized one) and it works perfect. I also tested the NFS mount point from dom0 on the same VM server and it worked...
    3) I have problem with the paravirtualized machine (from template)
    any other suggestions?

  • OpenSolaris xorg.conf help

    Hi, I am running OpenSolaris build NV_22 on an athlon64 box
    with ATI RS480 video on-board chipset (I think RS480 is also known as Radeon Express 200). Everything is working fine except I cannot quite get the right xorg.conf settings to fire up X. Installation was in X (CDE) so I know X works fine. But after installation, I could not get the right xorg.conf settings. I have the monitor settings as I get it from another box which has the settings. But I am not sure what are the proper settings for the graphics card section.
    Is there anyone that is also using the same video chip set and got
    X working? If so, can I take a look at your xorg.conf?
    Thanks

    Use Xsun until you get it figured out. There should be something there that covers it in the xfree86 stuff

  • Arch inside an OpenSolaris branded zone

    Hi,
    Those of you who have OpenSolaris installed might be interested to learn that it turns out that Arch runs quite nicely inside it. (Open)Solaris has a facility called BrandZ which allows you to run Linux programs under Solaris, more or less analogously to the way you can run Windows programs under Linux using WINE. But judging from the OpenSolaris Web site, the people developing BrandZ are under the impression that support for distributions using the 2.6 kernel is not very good at this point. That's because the distributions they've tried are CentOS and Ubuntu (!), instead of a distribution that keeps it simple like Arch.
    I've tried Arch under OpenSolaris, and it runs surprisingly well. (If you can call it Arch: Linux programs are run using the OpenSolaris kernel.) I've posted instructions on how to set things up on the OpenSolaris forums. You don't have to do a new install, since I've created a tarball with an already installed and configured Arch system.
    Maybe someone here will want to try this out. If there's interest, I'll add a page about it to the Wiki.
    One last note: most people here who have tried OpenSolaris have probably run it inside a virtual machine. That might work for this, but thinking about it makes my head spin a bit.

    Yes, I think you're right, if I understad you correctly. The FreeBSD facility for running Linux applications seems to be more like Wine in that both just run individual applications without creating a whole OS environment (excluding the kernel).
    I don't understand the working of the Solaris Linux brand in any detail, but I do know that the Linux zone goes through its own boot and shutdown process (which is very quick). In Wine, you run Windows applications from a Linux shell. With BrandZ in contrast, from the Solaris global zone, you have to log into a shell in the Linux non-global zone, and run Linux applications in that shell. To run an X application, you use ssh with X11 forwarding. (I just tried running the Chromium browser but it doesn't work, because the Linux clone function hasn't been implemented in the lx26 brand.)
    By the way, OpenSolaris is both a distribution and an OS, so it's a bit confusing. There's another distro of the OpenSolaris OS called Nexenta, which builds a Debian-based system on top of the OpenSolaris kernel. I haven't tried it, because I'm not fond of Debian and because I find OpenSolaris quite satisfactory, but Nexenta does seem to be under active development.
    Someone could do with Arch what the Nexenta project is doing with Debian: now that would be what you call an Arch Solaris. But I don't really see what would be the point. I think you get just about all the functionality of Arch you need, that OpenSolaris doesn't give you yet, in the way I've described here, with BrandZ.
    Still, I wish the lx26 brand were more actively developed and promoted. For example, sound works on the more fully implemented brand for Linux 2.4, but not on lx26. Also, apparently NFS doesn't work under lx26 (which Sun calls "experimental"), but it does under lx 2.4. I get the feeling that Sun is hoping that Linux hackers will pick up the slack when it comes to lx26 development.
    Edit: I just tried the latest beta release of Nexenta, and it is totally broken, when it comes to a GUI, anyway. I don't see why Sun still even bothers linking to Nexenta's Web site on the OpenSolaris.org pages: it must be a personal or political thing. I also don't understand where Nexenta is getting the money that is keeping it afloat, since the project is obviously misconceived and doomed.

  • Berkeley DB 5.0.21 on OpenSolaris 2009.06 with Sun Studio CC v12 update 1

    Dear all,
    I have compiled Berkeley DB on OpenSolaris 2009.06 x86 with following C/C++ compilers:
    semihc@giant$ uname -a
    SunOS giant 5.11 snv_111b i86pc i386 i86pc Solaris
    semihc@giant$ cc -V
    cc: Sun C 5.10 SunOS_i386 2009/06/03
    semihc@giant$ CC -V
    CC: Sun C++ 5.10 SunOS_i386 128229-02 2009/09/21
    I did however observe an issue with the configure script which incorrectly deduced that Sun C++ compiler cannot support templates. When inspected I noticed that configure script is using an invalid C++ code to validate template support. Followings are the diff file to resolve this issue.
    semihc@giant$ diff configure configure.org
    18031d18029
    < return 0;
    18039d18036
    < return 0;
    18153c18150
    < //dbstl_configure_test::max<double>(4,4.2); // instantiate T as double
    dbstl_configure_test::max<double>(4,4.2); // instantiate T as doubleAfter this change I managed to compile BDB with following settings:
    ../dist/configure prefix=/stow/db-5.0.21 enable-debug enable-diagnostic enable-cxx enable-stl enable-sql enable-sql_codegen enable-sql_compat
    I would appreciate if Berkeley DB team amend confiigure script to reflect above changes.
    Regards

    Thank you for the update,
    Once the work was underway it was realized that a
    a standards-compatible C++ compiler is needed to build dbstl.
    From the documentation:
    At:
    http://download-llnw.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17076_02/html/installation/build_unix_conf.html
    If your compiler is not ISO C++ compliant, the configure may fail with this argument specified because the STL API requires standard C++ template features. In this case, you will need a standard C++ compiler. So far gcc is the best choice, we have tested and found that gcc-3.4.4 and all its newer versions can build the Berkeley DB C++ STL API successfully.
    and At:
    http://download-llnw.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17076_02/html/programmer_reference/stl.html#stl_intro_portability
    For this reason, you need a standards-compatible C++ compiler to build dbstl. As of this writing, the following compilers are known to build dbstl successfully:
    *MSVC8
    *gcc3.4.4 and above
    *Intel C++ 9 and above
    For *nix platforms, if you can successfully configure your Berkeley DB build script with --enable-stl, then you should be able to successfully build dbstl library and application code using it.

  • OracleVM and paravirtualized guest - "Boot loader didn't return any data!"

    Hi folks,
    we're having a problem here: We have installed the latest version of Oracle VM Server on a machine that does not provide hardware virtualization support (i.e., no Intel VT or similar). As a result, we will not be able to make use of hardware virtualized VMs, but according to the Oracle docs, we should be able to set up virtual machines of the paravirtualized domain type. So far, so good.
    Also according to the docs, when setting up a PVM, one cannot use an ISO image located in a storage repository in order to start the installation, but instead one would have the mount the installation ISO somewhere, make available it's contents via NFS (or HTTP / FTP), and then set up the newly created virtual machine to attempt a PXE boot, specifying the location where the contents of the ISO have been placed (i.e.: nfs:host:/path/to/mounted/iso). All of this is decribed very well in the Oracle VM Server docs (chapter 8), but somehow it still doesn't seem to work for us.
    What happens is this: When we attempt to boot our PVM via PXE, specifying the NFS location where we've made the contents of the ISO available, we always get this:

    We've used multiple different ISOs in order to test this, including Oracle Enterprise Linux (just like the example in the docs does), however, we never get any further than this error message.
    Any ideas what we might be doing wrong?
    Greetings,
    Nils

    Hi Avi,
    thanks for your reply! Actually, I believe I checked the NFS reachability already. Here's what I can do on the VM server:
    [root@ORAVM1 ~]# ls /mnt/test
    [root@ORAVM1 ~]# mount.nfs 10.0.0.220:/mnt/iso /mnt/test
    [root@ORAVM1 ~]# ls /mnt/test
    EFI eula.py images media.repo README-en.html RELEASE-NOTES-x86_64-en RELEASE-NOTES-x86-en.html RPM-GPG-KEY Server
    EULA GPL isolinux Packages RELEASE-NOTES-en RELEASE-NOTES-x86_64-en.html repodata RPM-GPG-KEY-oracle supportinfo
    eula.en_US HighAvailability LoadBalancer README-en RELEASE-NOTES-en.html RELEASE-NOTES-x86-en ResilientStorage ScalableFileSystem TRANS.TBL
    [root@ORAVM1 ~]#
    So, I seem to be able to mount the NFS export correctly (what we're seeing are the contents of an Oracle Enterprise Linux ISO). And when setting up the VM, I specify "nfs:10.0.0.220:/mnt/iso" as the PXE boot path. Still it doesn't seem to work. :-(
    ovs-agent.log doesn't seem to contain too many additinal information of value either. Here's a snippet of what seems to happen when I power up my VM, but I guess there's nothing really new in there:

    So, any further ideas where to look?

  • Advantages of opensolaris or developer edition?

    Hi,
    noob question. So far I have been using SunStudio12 on Ubuntu 7.04-8.04 with no problems. Now I got my hands on OpenSolaris and SolarisExpress DEveloper edition's DVDs. Are there any fundamental advantages of migrating to either of this OSes in terms of development platforms?
    I use SunStudio for basic to intermediate Fortran programming.
    Thanks,
    D.

    H-mm, long time and no answer? :-) I know 2 cool features in Solaris, that do not exist in Linux world yet:
    1. ZFS
    2. D-Trace
    The last one is supported in Sun Studio - there is D-Light Tool, which provides an ability to run D-Trace
    scripts and view the results in GUI (as a Timeline chart). These features are not Fortran oriented, but
    they can help to make a Fortran application run faster.
    Thanks,
    Nik

  • Using standalone vs. opensolaris for running programs in FPGA model?!

    Was anyone able to do anything other than print a simple string using a standalone program in the openSPARC FPGA implementation? If so, would you please share your experience and what tools/libraries did u make use of?
    I am hitting a limitation in running even basic applications because I have NO libraries to access not even <stdlib.h>.
    For those out there using opensolaris to run your applications, did u need to install peripheral drivers? Do u have access to timers and other peripherals? Also, do u ftp ur C applications or do u build them in ur solaris sysACE file?
    Help is very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Faycel

    got same problem here. I was thinking to add input feature so that user can type input via hyper terminal and get result. I was using scanf but it is very difficult to add this syntax. I got errors. If you notice, the /examples/src/libc contains only printf.c file. we need to add scanf.c file in order to use scanf syntax. but I couldnt find how.
    Below is the links that provide source codes for scanf (and others).
    [http://src.opensolaris.org/source/xref/onnv/onnv-gate/usr/src/lib/libc/port/stdio/scanf.c]

    let me know if you can run your own program on FPGA Opensparc T1.
    Thanks.

  • Seg fault compiling Fractal C example in ss 12.1  opensolaris 117 x64

    Hello,
    When i try to compile the Fractal example with default settings i get :
    CC -o dist/Debug/SunStudio-Solaris-x86/fractal_2 build/Debug/SunStudio-Solaris-x86/fractal.o
    CC: Fatal error in ld: Segmentation Fault (core dumped)
    ld: fatal: file /opt/sunstudio12.1/prod/lib/crti.o: section .rela.annotate has invalid type [ SHT_RELA ]
    *** Error code 1
    Compiling openjdk 7 hotspot gives me the same seg fault too.
    I'm using ss 12.1 opensolaris 117 x64 with their update managers patches applied for both products.
    Is there some possible error at my system or is it an ss bug ?

    switching to latest ss express fixed the problem.
