Parsing Quicker

Hi everyone,
I am fairly new to LabVIEW and here is my task: I need to import an immensely large data file (16 megabytes) of a long chain of 16-bit binary numbers.  i would have to parse this data into 4 columns of 16-bit numbers until the end of the file.
elaboration: If the data were a counter (represented in hex) and it started from 0000, 0001 .... FFFF, 0000, 0001, etc. the data would look like this:
0000000100020003000400050006000700080009000A000B000C (and so on for a 16 megabyte file).
I would have to turn it into this:
0000  0001  0002  0003
0004  0005  0006  0007
0008  0009  000A  000B (and so on, delimited by tabs).
I have the VI attached to do this function, with the flexibility of parsing it into any number of columns, while counting and shifting accordingly.   I additionally used the for loop iteration "i" as the shift register by multiplying it by the number of columns needed using to "Write to Spreadsheet File."  I then compared the counter times 4 (in this case) and compared it to the byte length of the total file to detect the EOF to terminate the loop.
This program works.  The problem is, it takes too long to parse it this way for a 16mb file.  The addition of the tab delimiters and carriage returns increase the output file to a 30mb file and it takes approximately 2 hours to parse in total.  I made this as eloquent and simple as possible but Im just wondering if there is another method to do this to make this quicker (aiming for less than an hour).  Is there a limitation in LabVIEW that im overlooking?  or is my CPU just too slow?  are working with arrays usually this slow?  is each comparision of length of bytes and counter after each for loop iteration taking up most of the time?
i feel my lack of experience with labVIEW is finally taking its toll when working with such large files.
Solved!

It seems to me that all you're doing is reshaping a 1D array into a 2D array with a user-selected number of columns. You do not need a loop to do this. The Reshape Array function does this.
Note that to get the 4 digit format you need to use %04x as the format string, not %x.

  • SAX Parser quick question

    When you are parsing a file using the Sax do you have to set validation method on both the factory and the parse for it validate that the file is well formed XML?
    saxParserFactory.isValidating(true);
    saxParser.isValidating(true);
    Thanks

    no. setting it on the factory will create parsers with that setting already set to true.

    Hi,
    It seems like that you are encountering event 31552, you may check operation manager event logs for more information regarding to this issue.
    There can be many causes of getting this 31552 event, such as:
    A sudden flood (or excessive sustained amounts) of data to the warehouse that is causing aggregations to fail moving forward.
    The Exchange 2010 MP is imported into an environment with lots of statechanges happening.
    Excessively large ManagedEntityProperty tables causing maintenance to fail because it cannot be parsed quickly enough in the time allotted.
    Too much data in the warehouse staging tables which was not processed due to an issue and is now too much to be processed at one time.

  • Increased Shared Pool size longer hot backup time?

    Hello,
    I have hot backup that usually took 2 hours to complete. Then we had to increase Shared pool size from 280Mb to 380Mb due to some performance issue.
    One week after increase of size the hot backup is taking 4 hours to complete. Since there was no other changes to the system I am suspecting size increase
    of Shared Pool from 280Mb to 380Mb might be is reason for such drastic increase of backup time.
    I would like to get your comments on my suspicion to the problem.
    thank you

    When a SQL hits the SQL engine, the 1st thing the SQL engine does is determine if there is an existing parsed and ready-to-use copy of that SQL. If there is, that existing SQL is re-used - thus the name SQL Shared Pool. The resulting soft parse of the SQL is a lot faster (or should be) than a hard parse . A hard parse is where there is no re-usable copy, and the SQL needs to be parsed, validated and execution plan determined, etc.
    Kind of like re-using an existing compiled program (with different input data) versus compiling that program before using it. (and that is what source SQL is - a program that needs to be compiled).
    Okay, now what happens if there 100's of 1000's of SQLs in your shared pool? The scan that the SQL engine does to determine if there is a re-usable cursor, becomes pretty slow. A soft parse quickly becomes very expensive.
    The problem is typically clients that create SQLs that are not sharable (where the input data is hardcoded into the program, instead of input variables to the program). In other words, SQLs that do not use bind variables.
    Each and every hardcoded SQL that hits the SQL engine, is now a brand new SQL. And requires storage in the SQL Shared Pool. Shared Pool footprint grows and you start getting errors like insufficient shared pool memory.. and increase the shared pool which means even more space to store even more unique non-sharable SQLs and making soft and hard parses even more expensive.
    Like moving the wall a few metres further and then running even faster into it. !http://www.pprune.org/forums/images/smilies2/eusa_wall.gif!
    Now if the backup fires off a load of SQLs against the SQL engine, the fast soft/hard parses can now be a lot slower than previously, thanks to a larger shared pool that now caters for more junk than before.
    Unsure if this is the problem that you are experiencing.. but assuming that your suspicion is correct, it offers an explanation as to why there can be a degradation in performance.

  • XML versus Database (speed)

    Hello
    Is XML parsing quicker than getting data from database ( with connection pooling), and if , how faster it is ??
    Thanx a lot

    this sounds like cheap philosophy to me, because so many factors are to be taken in account when benchmarking two very different technologies.
    i think the real question is the one being asked again and again: native XML database vs RDBMS?
    the answer depends on the type of data you manipulate: documents or raw data? how do you want to select the data? do you have to perform stats, joins...

I tried removing the backup battery, disconnecting all cables and resetting time, date, etc., but no luck. I then tried to import it through a Canon GL2, but got same error. I tried several other tapes that work perfectly well in the camera but always get the same error. Went through 25 other tapes, so do not believe it is the tapes. I used to use iMovie a few years ago an after spending several hours trying to now import the footage remembered that speed compatibility was crucial. My 1 TB drive that I was saving my videos to was running on Firewire 800 speed while my camera was running at Firewire 400 speed. I changed my 1TB drive to run at Firewire 400 speed, and "bingo", it now works.
    Thank you however for your suggestions as now I will watch my extra plug-ins as well.

    How quickly parse big XML file (60 MB) ???

    I assume you mean load it into XML DB ?. Fundamentally your document is about the upper limit for 9.2.x. I would strongly recommend trying to break it up into a set of smaller documents using a SAX parser before trying to load it into XML DB. In 10g it should be possible to load much bigger documents than this.

  • Performance degradation in pl/sql parsing

    We are trying to use xml pl/sql parser and noticed performance degradation as we run multiple times. We zeroed into the following clause:
    doc := xmlparser.getDocument(p);
    The first time the procedure is run the elapsed time at sqlplus is something like .45sec, but as we run repeatedly in the same session the elapsed time keeps on increasing by .02 seconds. If we log out and start fresh, we start again from .45sec.
    We noticed similar degradation with
    p := xmlparser.newParser;
    but we got around by making the 'p' variable as package variable, initializing it once and using the same for all invocations.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

    Can I enhance the PL/SQL code for better performance ? Probably you can enhance it.
    or, is this OK to take so long to process these many rows? It should take a few minutes, not several hours.
    But please provide some more details like your database version etc.
    I suggest to TRACE the session that executes the PL/SQL code, with WAIT events, so you'll see where and on what time is spent, you'll identify your 'problem statements very quickly' (after you or your DBA have TKPROF'ed the trace file).
    SQL> alter session set events '10046 trace name context forever, level 12';
    SQL> execute your PL/SQL code here
    SQL> exitWill give you a .trc file in your udump directory on the server.

  • Time machine osx 10.6.8 problem slow backupd CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary. mdworker32 kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.

    Hello Guys I have a problem that I can not get to the bottom.
    Time Machine has suddenly stopped working it really slow to make up. Copy a few kb at a time and long hours it takes to close the back. (up to a few tens of megs, 10, 20 Mb).
    I made the following list of tests that will follow along with the log file.
    First of all I made a copy as root with Carbon Copy Cloner disk of the iMac. (So that they can go back in case of disaster)
    Following the guides Pondini (pondini.org) I did the following steps:
    1) Changed the internfaccia FW800 to USB hard drive (does not change anything, still slow)
    2) Changed to another external HD for time machine with FW800 and USB (nothing changes still slow)
    3) Recreated the full backup with Time Machine on either drive (still slow)
    4) Reinstalled the 10.6.8 Combo Pack (still slow)
    5) Re spootlight indexed with the disk (still slow)
    6) At this point, in desperation I reinstalled on the internal drive of my iMac 10.6.8 creating a new user, User Migration Assistant from my hd clone with Carbon Copy Cloner. Recreated the full backup with Time Machine.
    The first full backup is fast, but slow incremental backups are back (as to 'start a few kb at a time).
    I compared the log files with those of my other machine with same configuration and I found these errors:
    backupdir [19376]: CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData (): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary.
    mdworker32 [20950]: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint () to catch errors logged as They Are.
    You know help me? I saw that this error is from 10.5 to 10.7, but no one has found a real solution to the issue.
    I never installed antivirus software and tried with different external drives COPN capacity equal to or greater than the external drive. Only at the end I tried to divide the external drive to back up into two parts by a 1.5 TB and 500 GB but with the same mistakes that I have described.
    thanks

    backupd[19376]: CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary.
    mdworker32[20950]: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.
    Sapete darmi aiuto?
    grazie
    Stefano

    Thanks for the quick response.
    I followed the steps you listed and also remove the files that were creating problems spootlight, including the audio plugin and the panel preferences file.
    Then I stopped by the timemachine reindexed spootlight 'option in the preferences panel spootight privacy. After I restarted my iMac and formatted the external drive again, Time Machine and restarting a full backup. This morning after a quick full backup and disk indexing completed incremental backups are always slow. Proceeds with a few kb at a time. I resend you the log files and screen capture. My iMac is constantly backed up.
    Thank you for your time.

  • "Eval Parsed Formula Node VI" does not return outputs in predefined order

    I make a data analysis program, where the data consists of some million events and each event has e.g. 4 channels and 1-5 hits on each channel.
    I would like the user to select different expressions of these channels to give coordinates to plot in a 2D histogram (increment a bin in Intensity Graph), e.g. for some experiment you want to show x=ch1-ch2; y=ch1+ch2+ch3+ch4; while in another experiment you want x=ch1-123; y=123-ch2;
    There are other VIs that use static LabView-code for the normal things, but now after a few years of adding to this program I find that it would be quite good with a general plotter and let the user specify simple expressions like this. Also with the "normal" static plots, there is a need to filter out bad data and then it would be much simpler both to program and use if you could write text expressions with boolean logic to combine multiple filters. Making a LabView code and GUI that allows AND/OR/parenthesis combinations of expressions will be quite an effort and not very reusable.
    So, with the above motivation, I hope you see that it would make sense to have a useable string formula evaluator in LabView. I find some info about MathScript's user-defineable functions, but haven't managed to get MathScript working in LV2010 yet (maybe some licensing or installation issues, I think I had it in 8.6). But I think it would be possible to do most of what I want for the display-part (not the filtering) with the simpler Eval/Parse Formula Node VIs and suitable use of the limited variable name space. So I started testing, and found a quite annoying issue with how the evaulator works.
    To the parser, you are expected to send an array of output variable names. But then it ignores this array, and returns one output per assignment/semicolon in the formula, in the order of the formula text. Since the static parts of my program need to know what the output values mean (which of them is x and which is y), I would have to rely on the user not using any intermediate variable and defining x before y. The attached screenshot demonstrates the problem, and also that it has been solved by NI statff in the "Eval Formula Node VI" which does the appropriate array-searching to extract only the pre-defined outputs, in their expected order. But using that VI is about 100 times as slow, I need to pre-compile the formula and then only use the evaulator in the loop that runs over a million events.
    I don't know if I'll take the time to make my own tweks to the parsing stage (e.g. preparation of array-mapping to not have to repeat the search or maybe hacking the output list generated by the parser) or if I'll have to make it in a static Formula Node in the block-diagram (which supports more functions), so that the user has to run with development environment and stop the program to change the plotting function. But I wanted to share this trouble with you, in hope of improvments in future LabView versions or ideas from other people on how I could accomplish my aim. I have MATLAB-formula node possibility too, but is far as I have seen the only place the user could update the formula would then be in a separate .m file, which is re-read only when typing "clear functions" in the Matlab console window. (Having this window is also an annoyance, and perhaps the performance of calling Matlab in every iteration is not great.)
    Besides this issue, it also seems very strange there is virtually no support for conditional expressions or operators in Formula Node evaulated formulas (called Mathematics VIs in the documentation). Maybe using (1+sign(a-b))/2 you can build something that is 0 when a<b and 1 when a>b, but it is not user friendly! Would it really be diffcult to add a function like iif(condition, return_value_if_true, return_value_if_false) to replace the unsupported "condition ? if_true : if_false" operator? Would it really be difficult to add support for the < <= >= > == || && operators? Although compiled to an assemply language, this can't exactly be difficult for a CPU.

    (1) You can put any kind of code inside an event structure with the limitation that it should be able to complete quickly and without user interaction.  For example a while loop for a newton-raphson method is fine, but an interactive while loop where the stop condition depends on user iteraction is not recommended. By default, event structures lock the front panel until the event completes, so you would not even be able to stop it.
    (2) Yes, you can do all that. LabVIEW has no limitation as a programming language. Use shift registers to hold data and state information, the manipulate the contents as needed.
    (3) I would recommend to use plain LabVIEW primitives instead of formula nodes. Show us your code so we can better see what it's all about. Obviously you have a mismatch betweeen scalars and arrays. It is impossible from the given information where the problem is.
    (4) Yes, look inside the nonlinear curve fit VI (you can open it an inspect the code!). One of the subVIs does exactly that. Just supply your model VI.

  • XML parser not able to find encoding format of xml file with jre1.4.2

    Hi
    I am using jre1.4.2_05 and Weblogic 8.1 version and i have a problem with finding encoding format of xml file.
    I need to parse a xml file and need to find which encoding format that xml is based on that i need to change logic.
    Need to know after parsing each xml file what encoding format the xml is? Here the problem is we are using jre1.4.2_05 by default DOM \ SAX parser is not supported and i looked at few third party parser which are also don't have facility.
    But in latest jre 1.5 or jdk1.5 has this feature. Its difficult to the project to upgrade to jre1.5 or more.
    Please let me know if you have any idea about the issue.

    I had a quick look around and I think you might be able to find them in the support portal...
    SAP Support Portal > Software Downloads > SAP Software Download Centre > Support Packages and Patches > Archive for Support Packages and Patches > Archive - Browse our Download Catalog > SAP Connectors.
    Let me know if you find them.
    Regards,

  • Mailing lists are no longer being parsed for individual address to be placed in the email 'To' field.

    When I attempt to use a Mailing List, which has worked in the past, to supply the addresses for an email which I wish to send, it fails with an error message as per this example:
    "MAILING LIST NAME (current)" <"MAILING LIST NAME (current)"> is not a valid e-mail address because it is not of the form user@host. You must correct it before sending the e-mail.
    It seems that Thunderbird can no longer parse the Mailing List for the individual names and addresses.
    Do you need any more info?
    Thanks for your help.

    As you may need this fixed quickly: You could uninstall the current version via Control panel > Programs and Features and reinstall a previous version, download from here:
    Version 31.0:
    * ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/31.0/
    Version 24.7:
    * ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/24.7.0/
    click on the type for your OS. eg: If using Windows select 'win32'
    then select the language eg: en-GB = English british
    then download the .exe file
    The thunderbird program is not stored in the same place as your thunderbird Profile. So, uninstalling and reinstalling should not effect anything in the profile folder including emails, address books etc.
    However, it is always a good idea to backup your Profile, just in case :) You can use tools such as MoxBackup and/or ImportExporttool or manually copy your Profile folder to an external device. All info at links below:

  • Is DocumentBuilder.parse(..) reading the whole XML into memory?

    Hello,
    I have a quick question about the following code snippet:
    DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
    factory.setNamespaceAware(true);
    DocumentBuilder builder = factory.newDocumentBuilder();
    Document doc = builder.parse("books.xml");Please have a look at the last line "builder.parse("books.xml");". I would like to use XPath to retrieve some informations of a xml file without having to deserialize the whole file (since the XML file rather big and I need to go through several of them in a loop).
    What exactly does the "builder.parse(...)" method? Is it reading the XML file and writing all the content to memory? Or does it only analyze and read the structure of the XML code? Or in other words, is the text of an element "//books/title" in memory after parsing, or not until I really access the "title" node of that XML?
    Thanks a lot for your help
    Best Regards,
    Ben

    Hi ,
    I did'nt knew how to start a new thread , so i am asking the question here:
    ===========================================================
    I am trying to read a xml file but i am not able to do so properly. I am new to xml .
    am trying to read a xml file of the following format in the staf and stax job xml file:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <operating_system>
    <unix_80sp1>
    <tests type="quick_sanity_test">
    <prerequisitescript>preparequicksanityscript</prerequisitescript>
    <acbuildpath>acbuildpath</acbuildpath>
    <testsuitscript>test quick sanity script</testsuitscript>
    <testdir>quick sanity dir</testdir>
    </tests>
    <machine_name>u80sp1_L004</machine_name>
    <machine_name>u80sp1_L005</machine_name>
    <machine_name>xyz.pxy.dxe.cde</machine_name>
    <vmware id="155.35.3.55">144.35.3.90</vmware>
    <vmware id="155.35.3.56">144.35.3.91</vmware>
    </unix_80sp1>
    </operating_system>
    Here machine_name tag can be n number. I need to read all the machine_name tags in an array , so that i can use them later.
    Also i need to read all the vmware tags in an array (both value and attributes) so that i can use them later. The number of vmware tags can again be n numbers.
    I am trying to use the following code :
    <!-- ******************************************************************* -->
    <!-- Following function is used to parse an XML file and return the DOM -->
    <!-- document object -->
    <!-- ******************************************************************* -->
    <function name="parseXML" scope="local">
    <function-list-args>
    <function-required-arg name="xmlFileName">
    Name of file containing XML to be parsed
    </function-required-arg>
    </function-list-args>
    <sequence>
    <!-- Parse the XML -->
    <script>
    factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
    factory.setValidating(1)
    factory.setIgnoringElementContentWhitespace(0)
    builder = factory.newDocumentBuilder()
    document = builder.parse(xmlFileName)
    </script>
    <script>
    vmware = None
    machine_name = None
    # Get the text value for the element with tag name "vmware"
    nodeList = document.getElementsByTagName("vmware")
    for i in range(nodeList.getLength()):
    node = nodeList.item(i)
    if node.getNodeType() == Node.ELEMENT_NODE:
    children = node.getChildNodes()
    for j in range(children.getLength()):
    thisChild = children.item(j)
    if (thisChild.getNodeType() == Node.TEXT_NODE):
    machine_name = thisChild.getNodeValue()
    # Get the text value for the element with tag name "machine_name"
    nodeList = document.getElementsByTagName("vmware")
    for i in range(nodeList.getLength()):
    node = nodeList.item(i)
    if node.getNodeType() == Node.ELEMENT_NODE:
    children = node.getChildNodes()
    for j in range(children.getLength()):
    thisChild = children.item(j)
    if (thisChild.getNodeType() == Node.TEXT_NODE):
    machine_name = thisChild.getNodeValue()
    </script>
    <return>[machine_name,vmware]</return>
    </sequence>
    </function>
    I am able to read only one value for machine_name (u80sp1_L005) and also one value for vmware
    i.e 144.35.3.91.
    What i want is read all the machine_value tags into a list , so that i can use it later
    Also i want to read all the vmware tags attributes into a list and all corresponding values into another list.
    what i mean is considering the following:_
    <machine_name>u80sp1_L004</machine_name>
    <machine_name>u80sp1_L005</machine_name>
    <machine_name>xyz.pxy.dxe.cde</machine_name>
    <vmware id="155.35.3.55">144.35.3.90</vmware>
    <vmware id="155.35.3.56">144.35.3.91</vmware>
    read all machine_name tag values into one list (u80sp1_L004,u80sp1_L005,xyz.pxy.dxe.cde)
    also all vmware attributes into one list *(155.35.3.55,155.35.3.56).....*and all the vmware values into one list *(144.35.3.90,144.35.3.91)*
    Also a good link to understand parsing using doumentbilder factory would be good help.
