Partition Size Limit in Boot Camp Assistant?
I have a 27" iMac (current model) with 3TB Fusion Drive. The iMac has been restored from a backup from another computer.
I am now trying to install Boot Camp. When prompted to create a partition, I am limited to a 98GB partition for the Boot Camp drive. Why???
It's almost as if it's see only the SSD portion of the Fusion Drive as potential for the Boot Camp partition, but my understanding is that none of the SSD will be used for the partition.
Is there any other reason this would be happening? I've seen the issues about the 3TB limits with earlier versions of the OS, but these should be fixed now. No?
Apologies for delay. Here's the whole dump:

How to create a MBR partition in Lion without Boot Camp Assistant?
Does anybody know a way to create a MBR partition in Lion other than Boot Camp Assistant way? In terminal or some 3rd party software?
Thank youTo answer the question actually asked, the command line utility fdisk (run as "sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0" for the appropriate disk0) can create and edit MBRs, even if the disk has a GPT partition table.
You need to verify that the MBR and the GPT partition tables agree with each other - at least as far as the start and end blocks of all the partitions they contain. OS X ignores the MBR. Disk utility will try and write a "correct" MBR, or just punt, and create an MBR with a single partition spanning the entire disk as a "protective" partition.
Booting an OS using the MBR (i.e. - Windows) when it doesn't correctly describe the disk partitions it contains is a recipe for disaster.
rEFIt (a Mac boot manager) has a couple of useful tools here. Partition Inspector will display both GPT and MBR partition maps. On boot, there's a tool that will copy the first four partitions from the GPT to the MBR (basically, a smarter version of what Disk Utility tries to do).
There's also a third party utilllity called gdisk that is like fdisk, but for gpt partition tables. -
Boot camp assistant says "not enough space" with 35GB available!
I have recently cleared space on my hard drive to accomodate a 64bit Windows 7 partition, which I wanted to make with boot camp assistant.
I made absolutely sure I had plenty of space; in fact, I have no less than 35 GB of space available on my startup disk. HOWEVER, the amount of space on my hard drive seems to be constantly changing. I believe this is due to time machine's hidden background backups which automatically fill up an expandable partition entitled "mobilebackups".
Boot camp assistant constantly gives me the following error: "The startup disk does not have enough space to be partitioned. You must have at least 10 GB of free space available."
This is on a 2.2GHz 15" SR MacBook Pro 2007 with 6GB RAM. I am running 10.7.1 (LION). Perhaps this has something to do with the recovery disk or the mobilebackps partition being treated as one or more separate partitions, as boot camp will only partition a drive with a single partition. However, I have not heard of this error anywhere else.
Thanks for your help in advance! I am a rather experienced user, so feel free to use advanced terminoligy if you wish.
PS Attached are screenshots of the error message and of my HD's info (free space highlighted)After restoring, I lost my Recovery HD partition. I am currently working to get a new one. Perhaps I will install it AFTER boot camp is finished, which might solve the multiple-partitions error? I could use some advice here.
At this point, bootcamp is giving me a new error which says some files cannot be moved. I am moving this to a new discussion HERE:

Boot Camp Assistant can't be used due to ROM Firmware
Hi, I'm running:
OS X: 10.9.5
Build 13F34
Mac Book Pro Mid 2010
Boot-ROM-Version: MBP61.0057.B0F
SMC-Version (System): 1.58f17
Even though alle updates available are installed, my boot camp assistant tells me, that it can't be used due to the ROM Firmware version. That is a huge problem for me, because I want to delete my bootcamp partition and I can't right now, because the only way to delete the partition is via the boot camp assistant while on mac OS X...
Does somebody know how to fix the ROM Firmware issue or a workaround to delete the partition without using the BCA (Boot Camp Assistant) ?
Thanks

Boot Camp Assistant leaves me at a gray apple screen
I am working with a 2008 Mac Pro 3.1 w/ 1TB hard drive, a Lite-On iHAS dvd optical drive. My operating system is Yosemite. I am trying to install a Windows 7 partition, but Boot Camp Assistant is not being cooperative. Here's my process for installing it with BootCamp:
1. Created Windows 7 x64 install disk from downloaded .iso file (en_windows_7_....iso) — Maybe I am using the wrong installer?
2. Open Boot Camp Assistant, went through the motions of downloading the drivers onto a separate external thumb drive, then partitioning hard drive to have WINDOWS partition.
3. Boot Camp Assistant mentioned something to me about there being an extra bootable drive on an external drive (the thumb drive, I believe) and it wanted to disable that.
4. I disabled it.
5. Yosemite restarts.
6. The gray loading screen pops up with Apple logo.
7. Frozen for more than 10 min, at which point I believe something has erred.
If anybody can help me resolve this issue, it would be much appreciated! I'll be paying close attention to e-mail in order to provide quick responses to this thread.
Thanks!
Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10), Early 2008 ModelI have read that I should try buying a second hard drive for Windows. Confirm or refute. It seems highly unnecessary.
I have also tried going to the manual boot screen–holding alt at boot time. same results occur as above. -

Boot Camp Assistant: Can't Partition Drive
I've been trying to partition my hard drive using the Boot Camp Assistant so I can install Windows XP. However, whenever I try to partition the drive, I get an error message saying that my hard drive needs to be a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. I opened up Disk Utility to see what was wrong, and it said that my only hard drive, Macintosh HD, was formatted as a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. I tried bumping the partition size down from 15 gigs to 12 gigs; the progress bar was a little under 25% full when I got the error message again. I'm planning on arranging to get support at an Apple Store, but I wanted to see if anybody on here knew what to do first. Any ideas?
JadeH wrote:
okay so i did what you said and i selected restart under superduper clone so i could test to make sure the clone worked...but now i can't get it to restart under my Macintosh HD. the clone works fine but it is on my external hard drive. i need y internal hard drive to be my start up disk so i can use boot camp assistant. i went to system preferences->startup disk but it only shows my clone on my external hard drive. any suggestions?
When you tested the clone, did you change the default boot to the clone? You should have simply booted by holding down the Option key.
I don't know what happened to your HD or original OS, but if you reboot and hold down the option key, your original OS should show up in the selection menu.
If not, boot into the Leopard DVD (press "C" key during boot) and after the language screen, in the menu, top left under Utilities select disk utility and run it, repairing HD and permissions. Then see if you can reboot into the original OS. You may have to hold down Option key again until you boot it and change the default back to the original OS. -
I run Mountain Lion, a fresh install, brand new Macbook Pro. HD: Samsung 840 Pro 512 GB SSD.
When trying to go through Boot Camp Assistant / Setup it works fine until it wants to repartition my drive. It then quits unexpectedly and returns these errors:
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x000000000000003c
Everything else on this new machine works like a charm. I checked permissions, verified the disk - no issues whatsoever.
Can anyone help me out with this?I had the same problem, so I decided the system had too much going on. I stopped Time Machine and unmounted the disc, then I closed every other running program except Boot Camp, disconnected all unnecessary devices, selected the partition size and then didn't touch a thing, just went and made a cup of coffee. When I came back it had started and eventually partitioned fine.

I am using an iMac, 8.1, early 2008. I installed Windows XP at that time. I am now using OS 10.8.5 and want to remove the Windows partition to free up disk space. Boot Camp Assistant does not allow me to select the "install or remove" option. How can I get rid of the Windows partition?
You can try removing it in Disk Utility.
To resize the drive do the following:
1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
2. Click on the Partition tab in the Disk Utility main window. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
3. Select the bottom rectangle/partition. Click on the Delete [-] button below the sizing window to remove it. Click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
4. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for the remaining partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and drag it all the way down to the bottom. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a restored single volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss. Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work. -
Boot Camp Assistant says Install rather than Partition
I have a second gen MacBook (Intel core 2 duo) I installed Windows XP via bootcamp back when I had OSX Tiger. Today, running OSX Lion, I deleted the windows partition with boot camp assistant, wanting to increase the hard drive size and install Windows 7. I successfully deleted the windows xp partition, and restarted the computer. Now I want to repartition the hard drive and install windows 7. I open boot camp assistant, click continue (only option) check 'install windows 7' and not 'download the latest windows support software from apple' as I already have this on an external hd and click continue. I choose the hard drive size, and boot camp assisnt has the option to 'install' and NOT 'partition'. I dont know why this occurs. anyway, if I click install, boot camp assistant says 'the installer disk could not be found' even though my windows 7 dvd is in the computer.
So, my question boils down to, 'why can't i partition my disk for windows 7?'
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! After restoring, I lost my Recovery HD partition. I am currently working to get a new one. Perhaps I will install it AFTER boot camp is finished, which might solve the multiple-partitions error? I could use some advice here.

Boot camp assistant not giving option to boot from windows partition drive
Hi, I am a recent convert to Mac OS (10.6.8) on my three year old Macbook. I have been using windows on boot camp since the beginning and have just shifted to OS as the windows was taking too much space and running quite slow (not to mention the viruses accumulating!). I am getting better at it now, only Excel being problematic adjusting to with the different and less convenient keyboard shortcut keys!
Whilst moving over to MacOS, I changed around the disk partitions using disk utility to free up and utilize some unused space. My Boot camp partition still exists untouched, but the boot camp assistant is not giving me the option to restart the computer using the C: drive (and enter windows). I also have saved data on windows that i want to transfer over to MacOS. Any suggestions please? all help/comments will be much appreciated! Thanks. Here you go sir:

Boot camp assistant no longer registers my windows partition.
I recently decided to wipe my macbook pro (aluminum) and reinstall OS X on it. Using my leopard install disk, I erased the drive. I had a windows partition running at the time, but I decided no to erase that as well. Unfortunately it seems as thought the disk couldn't install snow leopard from scratch, so I installed tiger (my leopard disk wasn't working) and upgraded from there. This worked, and now I've got snow leopard up and running, the only issue is that boot camp assistant doesn't register my hard drive as being partitioned, so I cant remove or add partitions, though I can still boot into XP.
I want to remove and resize the partition, should I use disk utility to erase it? Or is there an alternate solution?
Thanks
-WillWell, I just noticed the restore button at the bottom corner of boot camp assistant. Seems to have solved the problem XD.

Hi!
I am getting the error:
"The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Jounraled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows."
I read up some on google, but all of them says that they have crated a partition and that is the problem, I only have the standard "Macintosh HD".
I tried to create a partition manually in disk utility but then the error message: "Partition failed with error message: Could not unmount disk."
Can anyone help me? It's driving me crazy.
Thanks. This message, and threads like yours got asked daily for over two years, now it is only a couple times a week!!
Is it so hard to follow through? you were to have backup already, clones are best, then erase/format and restore.
Then partition.
Some have been able to use Disk Utility booted from OS X DVD or another drive, and repair the drive.
You have to use Boot Camp Assistant (99.9% anyway) to create and achieve a proper Windows Master Boot Record partition. -
I can't find a specific answer to this question.
I did have a functioning Windows 8 installation on my MacBook Pro previously. I tried to make a third exFAT partition so as to have a drive mutually readable/writable to both operating systems. This made it so I could no longer boot into my Windows installation.
I know I'll need the boot camp drivers installed on the Windows installation after the fact, but would manually creating a partition and installing the OS without Boot Camp Assistant work? And would I be able to boot from it while having a total of 3 partitions? That's the spirit!
Just be sure to have your OS X junk safe in a tested backup, in case the whole thing craps out and you end up having to do a low-level partition and erase of the entire drive.
And like I said, the problem is not OS X. I've set up mine at least once with 4 partitions holding as many flavors of OS X as can run on the hardware, all perfectly bootable on demand.
