Party Mode

Hey;
My friend was showing me "Media Monkey" on his (Shudder) widows machine... and it had an awesome feature called "Party Mode" ... When activated the user could not switch away from "Media Monkey" (basically locked the computer - Password required to leave "Party Mode") ... they couldn't change any ID3 tags... they couldnt immediately change the song... just go through the list and cue whatever they wanted...
I would love to implement something like this on my MBP... I usually have my computer running with airtunes when we are partying and people generally find a way to mess with my settings or w/e...
So I guess my question is if anyone is aware of any iTunes extention/mod/etc. or OS X iTunes replacement that has such features?
(I know there is a guest account work around... but I dont really wanna go that route)

I tend to use my computer at the same time... so I would like to be able to quickly get into my profile etc. (I know ... fast user switching...)
I guess one of the main features of the other program that I would like to have is the ability to stop people from changing the current song playing...
Ya I know how party shuffle works... but alot of people come along and click whatever they wanna hear... and then the song ends up changing tonnes... I want to block those people who cut off other peoples songs.
It would be nice to also block the same song from being played more than x times in x time.
The guest account work-around is what I am currently doing... just looking for a better way... and seeing what "MediaMonkey" does... makes me want iTunes to do it.

  • Itunes needs a "party mode"

I am hoping to have a party in the coming weeks and i know from past experience that windows has a party mode, which is great, as it allows guests to put music on without allowing them access to the rest of the computer. Is there any way i can achieve this with itunes? I've read posts about creating a 'new user' with limited access but the windows party mode method is much easier. It would be great if itunes had this kind of function. I no longer use WMP so WPM is no longer an option really as all my music is now on itunes.
I have found a voting function for itunes DJ but not all my friends have iphones/ipod touch to use this function if i simply locked my computer.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated

totally agree. It seems to me like all the top notch apple programmers are working on iphone and ipad which are brilliantly coded, but they leave itunes to the rejects and college dropouts.
It's slow, the syncing is unreliable and unpredictable, it doesn't ask me which way I want to sync, and who says if I don't want to sync it should remove that content type off my phone ?
Sometimes just shutting down itunes then restarting it returns an error about missing software, until you reboot.
It has problems downloading large files (both apps, and ios updates) even on an (800+ Kbyte connection). It returns meaningless error codes unaccompanied by a human readable friendly error.
Problem is we don't have a choice, we're stuck with itunes.
Bottom line is they need to spend some money on this cow not just on the devices.

  • Third party mod sandboxing...

I am wanting to be able to allow third party mods to be pluged into my game however since i cannot garentee that the mods will not access the local disk or do other bad stuff, is it possible to 'sandbox' the code of the mod?
Basically i would want to allow the mod code the same functionality as would an applet.

It would throw an exception if they attempt to call any method that calls checkPermission(...), (File, Socket, ClassLoader, etc).
I'm not sure why you think I/O should not be sandboxed, but you can check the type of Permssion and if the permission asks to read a file from a certain location then you can decide not to throw an exception. You can basically tailor it to the level of detail required by your application.
There is a lot of potential for Java. For example, if every application was written in Java then for each application you could assign a list of permissions. Then if any application tried to access a protected resource then the user could be made aware of this. This would get rid of the spyware problem and probably some other problems that will continue to cause problems for users.

  • Partify / Spotify Party Mode

How about a function that when turned on, only allows the queing of music (i.e instead of dubblevclicking to play the next song, it will just be que'd)? This would be great if u have a party and don't peolple changing midtrack all the time.
    Edit:
[Wow! Great to see that my idea has gained support, seems like I wasn't the only one that thought that this would be a great idea. As requested; I'll edit my post to better explain the idea]
    Spotify Partymode
    # Main Goal #
The main purpose of this feature is to be able to set Spotify in a partymode preventing people
from randomly changing tracks in the middle of a song.
Partymode will be easy to customize with several options making it suitable for all types of parties.
This feature will only be accessible with Spotify Premium.
Partymode will also decrease the number of fist fights dramaticly and therefore lead to a much better party-experience.
    # Options #
    * Enable/Disable partymode. (If partymode is enabled when logging out, it will be enabled on logon).
    * Password protection. (If you want to set a partymode password. Default is Spotify password.)
    * Allow skipping to next song? (Yes/no).
    * Volume lock. (Prevent volume from being changed).
    # Queuing #
    * Queuing:
        - Only allow queuing new tracks. (Prevents people from changing tracks in the middle of a song).
        - Only allow queuing X songs within Y second (Spam protection).
        - Only allow queuing X songs from same artist. (Spam protection).
        - If no songs in queue, play music from this playlist: <playlist>.
        - Time limit (Not allowed to queue songs longer that X minutes).
    * Exclude genres, artists and songs.
    * Store partymode to playlist: <playlist> (prevents clearing the queue on logout/login).
    # Admin mode #
        - Unlock partymode.
        - Delete from queue.
        - Re-order queue.
        - Change track instantly.
        - Set/change partymode password.
        - Enable partymode.
    # Defaults #
    * Lock existing playlists so that they can't be modified or deleted.
    * Partymode will not scrobble to last.fm.
    * Partymode will prevent access to social networks.
    * Purchases will not be allowed in partymode.
    * Disable access to Inbox and other personal information.
[]Though I must say the way to controll the volume while you'r having a party is to use a spotify remote app instead. Way too easy to just crank up the speaker volume even if you have a volume lock.]

    HI Guys,
    [Background]
I've been to loads of house parties recently that use Spotify to play all the music, it generally starts off really well with people coming along to queue songs, however eventually someone will come up and search for a song and click PLAY. This then adds ALL the hits of the search to the play queue and ruins the music as you get about 15 of the same song by various artists.
    [Idea]
Would it be possible to create a "Noob" or "Party" mode that primarily disables the queue button? It would mean that people can only queue songs as a means of hearing them and they will come on after everyone else's requests. This way, at the start of the night the host can play a song from a party-playlist and then enable party mode. Any queued songs will go to the next song, otherwise the playlist will just play out. Perfect.
    Thoughts/Suggestions?

  • Third Party X-Fi Mode Switching Softw

I recently ran across an issue which is documented in this thread:
    http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&message.id=53809
What I found out raised an interesting possibility: it should fairly easy to make software to switch modes with X-Fi sound cards. The community only needs to work together to make some third party software to get the job done.
When modes are switched for the X-Fi, the following folder is utilized (on XP, at any rate):
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Creative\Spi\
    {00000005-00000000-00000007-000002-00000005-00202}\Modes
The files which are involved are named as such:
    CTXFICMu.ini
    CTXFICMu.rfx
    CTXFIEMu.ini
    CTXFIEMu.rfx
    CTXFIGMu.ini
    CTXFIGMu.rfx
The two 'CTXFICMu' files correspond to Audio Creation Mode, while the 'CTXFIEMu' files match Entertainment Mode and the 'CTXFIGMu' files match Game Mode.
The *.ini files are text files containing mixer information for each mode, and the *.rfx files are binary files. I suspect the *.rfx files may be related to the programmable nature of the audio chip, but I haven't messed around with them too much since it is outside the scope of my abilities.
The CTXFISPI.EXE process is making the reads and writes to these files, which seems to indicate that it does the dirty work when it comes to changing the modes of the card.
If the community can determine how to encourage CTXFISPI.EXE to switch modes (or if Creative decides to be forthcoming with the details), then third party apps can be developed to make the switch easier (tray app menu), faster (no animations), more efficient, and seamless (a scriptable method for changing modes would be great!).
Additionally, it shouldn't be too hard to make software which allows for per user mixer settings with the X-Fi. It is only a matter of switching in a particular user's *.ini and *.rfx files to the Modes directory before CTXFISPI.EXE loads them at log in, and then saving the same files again at log off.
So, I have a request for Creative: would you please release some documentation about how to switch modes programmatically or even from the command line?
I'm also throwing out this challenge to the community: if Creative is unable or unwilling to release the information needed, then let's get under the hood of the X-Fi and decode mode switching ourselves. If someone can expose how mode switching works, then I would be more than happy to whip up an interface for it.
    Drailex_Mauder

I have created a quick fix for the lack of mode switching options currently available. I would like to program something more feature rich in C, but for now VBScript is better than nothing. If we don't get a leg up from Creative, it may be a while as I will have to look into reverse engineering the software. This would require learning some new skills on my part.
These scripts work by loading the Creative Audio Console and pushing the appropriate keystrokes to change the mode. It is a dirty way to get the job done, but until more is known about how to change modes through CTXFISPI.EXE these scripts will have to do.
I am releasing these scripts under a BSD licence, which appears at the end of this message. Kinda silly for such small blocks of code, but it's there more to cover my assets with the legal disclaimer than anything else.
Copy each block of code into a separate text file and make sure that the file name ends in a VBS extension. Any up to date 2000 or XP machine should run these scripts no problem. I have placed shortcuts to the scripts in my Quick Launch Toolbar so that I can quickly change modes.
You could also add them to a script which switches to game mode, runs your game, and then switches back to entertainment mode.
VERY IMPORTANT: The Creative Audio Console must not be running when you run one of these scripts, otherwise the script will randomly change your settings.
And once again, if anyone can assist in determining how to coax CTXFISPI.EXE into switching modes, this will take things a long way to creating 3rd party mode switching software which meets the goals of my original post in this thread.

  • Version 1.0.2 freezing today- 10/5/7  for me and friends!

This morning I got a text from my father asking me to not call his iphone today because it kept freezing on him. 2 hours later, my phone began doing the same! freezing everywhere- it does not what apps we use. I called ANOTHER person who has also not updated to 1.1.1 yet. they too are having issues today.
I wanted to reach out to the community and see if anyone else is having random freezes with the same firmware recently.
I do not want to upgrade to 1.1.1 yet because of the battery life issues as well as other things I have read.
    Please advise.
    -thanks

I totally understand you not wanting to update. My dads iphone which was never hacked and had no third party mods on it is still bricked and apple is doing nothing. Another friend has sms issues and cannot delete email. I sent my iphone in for service last week, static and drop call issues, and it had version 1.0.2 and they updated it. Now i am having problems with sms and email deleting. But unfortunatly i think you have no choice but to update. If you call tech support you can always refuse there new software license agreement and explain that you purchased your product with whatever version you had and do not want to upgrade and that you do not agree to the new terms and conditions. They really have no choice but to repair and leave the software set where it was. This does not mean that they are not going to update the modem software which is a seperate issue. But again if you modded your phone you really do not want to do this. sorry i can not offer better advice

  • What amplifier would work best for Airport Express?

I have built in a ceiling speakers in all my rooms and all the rooms have their own apple macmini or laptop
All wiring of the speakers come to a central media room, and in this, I want to place 8 airport express to allow each room to be able to play through itunes onto their ceiling speaker. Effectively we could also put all speakers on from one room and create a party mode
The problem is that airport express requires powered speakers and these ceiling speakers are not powered of course. This means I would need to put an amplifier between the airport express and the speaker (I think)
Just wondering if anyone has successfully done this?
I have had a look at multi zone amplifier like
    http://www.htd.com/whole-house-audio/mid-level-whole-house-audio/MCA-66-Audio-Co ntroller-Amplifier
Most multi zone amplifiers have their own keypad, but with apple you do not require this as you can control it straight from your mac! So what I want to do is control the INPUT level on the amplifier, and fix the output level on the amplifier, if I am thinking right..... as I thought this would work best ...
then if you put the volume control on the mac to MAX the amplifier would already be preset to max and the ceiling speakers would rock
    Any suggestions or .....
    Thanks

    http://www.macworld.com/article/143258/2009/10/airtuneswholehomeaudio.html
In this Macworld article, they just use multiple Parasound Zamps, which are single zone amps that turn on and off by themselves, depending on when sound is passing through. I'm planning on doing this with my new construction because it looks like a simple setup with no remotes needed save the iPhone, which I always have on me.

  • Workplace Music Solution needed  - is an Apple TV the answer?

    Hi.
I have a design studio with 11 designers using the space, all on apple desktops or laptops and most have iphones.
I want to set up a centrally acessible speaker system so everyone can log-in and decide what music to play.
This would need to include output from iPlayer streams, Spotify and Last.fm as well as iTunes which is why I thought out Airport Express might not work without AirFoil or similar.
Is an Apple TV the answer?
I was in the apple store today and one of the assistants mentioned it had a "party mode" that multiple iOS clients could use?
Will this work for multiple Lion and Snow Leopard users as well?
    Thanks in advance

EDIT: Just re-read your post. This won't work for Soptify or Last.fm, just iTunes
We use iTunes DJ (Party mode) like this at work sometimes. I don't know that you can control it from a Mac but it works from iOS devices. Basically you would have a Mac running iTunes hooked up with a cord to the stereo system. People then would use their iPads/iPhones/iPod touches to suggest songs to play that are on the main itunes library.
You could also use AirPlay on the Central iTunes computer (an old mac in a server room, for example) and use an Airport Express to receive the stream and be connected to the stereo with a cord.
Apple TV only allows optical audio or HDMI output, so that is a limitation for you.
There may be other ways to do this, but that is the easiest way I can think of.

  • Time Machine. . . or CCC?

It seems like Time Machine is pretty inflexible in terms of what and how it backs up. There's almost nothing to the preferences, and as far as i can tell within the program all you can do is restore.
I started using Carbon Copy Cloner to backup my main drive to a slave internal drive and have always used a Terrabyte FW drive for Time Machine.
Is there anyway to specify which drives or which files on which drive TM backs up on? The whole incremental thing would be more useful if it didn't have to be every file on every drive every few hours or whatever it defaults to.
TM is currently telling me there's not enough space on my Terabyte drive and rather than delete how far the backup go I can only stop backing up Library and Apps folders, which are pretty crucial.
Should I just use CCC for everything and TM is not actually backing up my backup from CCC.
If there are any resources with these comparisons let me know also.
    thanks
    enzosf

I think part of what makes Time Machine such a success is how candy-coated it all is. Backup software has been around for more than a decade, yet the vast majority of people just don't back up their data. I've been guilty of it too, and have seen data loss happen more times than I care to count.
It's important to point out that you can control what Time Machine backs up. In the options, you can specify folders (and even volumes) that are not backed up. That's important, especially if you've ripped a bunch of your DVD's to your hard drive (if you ever lose something you can just rip it again), or have ripped a bunch of your CD's (again, just re-encode whatever was lost).
Time Machine's normal process does not allow for the changing of the schedule. But it's worth noting that Time Machine isn't just backing everything up all the time. Once that first backup is made, it is only backing up the data that changes. And then from there, it only keeps data on a graduated basis. It keeps the hourly backups for the last 24 hours. Then it only keeps a daily backup for the last month. And then after a month, it just keeps weekly backups. Behind the scenes, without you having to work out any complex configurations or do anything, it just manages all that. Dumps the stuff no longer needed, organizes the stuff it's been storing and keeps it at the beck and call of the color-coated end-user application.
If you still don't like hourly backups, there are third-party mods/tweaks to the OS you can use that will let you adjust that schedule. I've toyed with them, but ultimately opted to just let Time Machine do its thing.
If you're concerned that Time Machine will eat up all the available space on an external drive, then I recommend you partition that drive (using Disk Utility), which would let you specify exactly how much space you want to let Time Machine use. I highly recommend that if the external drive you're using is large.
I won't knock on CCC, I think the app has a lot of strong points, and it certainly works well for a lot of people. But my choice for backup solution is to go with Time Machine, for simplicity and elegance.

  • Using Shared Libraries When Not Logged In

Is there a way I can use a shared library from my laptop when not logged into my iTunes account on my main computer? It kind of defeats the purpose if I have to have both iTunes running.

Yes, I'd like to be able to access my shared library from my laptop. I'd like it to function so that my home PC (which has the original library on it) does not have to be running iTunes. For times when I'm logged off or not running iTunes (because it uses a lot of the computer's memory, and other users find it quite annoying).
I'd just like to know if there are any third-party mods, software, or any other option to perform this task.

  • Unable to link incompatible devices. Please update all out of date devices

I just recently got the trio kit with two DM100's and the wireless controller.
Linksys Easy Link Advisor (LELA) does not install the controller, but it was able to be installed with most functionality manually.  (running windows xp 64)
Right Now I am getting the error "unable to link incompatible devices. Please update all out of date devices" when I try to link my zones named Player1 and Player2 for party mode.  When viewing details they show different firmware versions (1.7.3 and 1.23.31).  I have tried to update, but they show up as completely updated in LELA.
How can I force a firmware upgrade? I did a search, and the help file was of no use. There is also no download available.
For the next gen of linksys home audio, how about a standard webconfig/telnet where I can define a static IP address for the wired and wireless connections?  Eventually I hope to start up wireshark and see how this all works, because the system is cumbersome in its current state.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Basically, Leave it powered on, connected to the internet over the weekend.
    Another user also mentioned:
You can force the update to happen by using the Media Center Sofware.
       1. Open media center software
       2. Mouse over the DMP-100 player window and right click to expose menu
       3. Select About to see current firmware version and option to update.
I did this, and it updated...eventually.  Took overnight (>3hours), and there was no user feedback/acknoledgment that the command had been received/processed/completed.

  • Purchased my computer just before new ones came out in Oct. It runs slow and shows Gray screen sometimes when I open it. Anyone else having this problem?

I have a new but 2010 model. It operates very slow and has gray screen occassionaly. One store said it's "safe sleep", the other graphic board. Is anyone else having this problem with computer only 4 mos. old?

Your problems may be caused by software or hardware, including the gray screen and the slowness.  The intermittent gray screen is a puzzler and probably is hardware.   TUSL2C’s diagnosis may be right on the money.  A question is how to isolate it to HW or SW that so you can get good service?
The obvious cheap and easy fix is to replace that cable but I don’t think you can do that  because it is under warranty.  There are other ways to isolate the problem that won’t void the warranty.
If the disk turns out to be healthy and it continues to boot to a gray screen then that will be a sign that internal hardware, other than the disk, is to blame.  Since they are blaming it on software we will be able to test it with a pristine OS X installation that has no 3rd-party software to blame.
    > They are calling it "Safe Sleep Mode" and that happens if I don't use the machine within 4 hours.
The machine should go to sleep and wake up almost instantly every time without a gray screen.  If you can demonstrate the problem reliably by putting it to sleep and waking it up then that will be most useful.  We will show it failing on pristine OS X software without 3rd-party mods to prove it is an Apple problem.  Similarly if you can reliably show the gray screen from a power-on boot that will help.
My first question is do you have a current Time Machine (or other) backup?  If not you should create one before we get to steps that could stress the disk.  If it is a faulty cable or a faulty disk then the system could stop functioning at any time.  It is always prudent to maintain a current backup and especially important when the system is sick.  If you do not have a Time Machine (or other) backup then post back for instructions on how to create one.
In the mean time please download and run Etrecheck and post back the results.
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
This will indicate possible software compatibles and other details that may be helpful in a diagnosis.
Also run disk diagnostics with Disk Utility.  This will check if the disk and filesystem are healthy.
From the Finder, pull down on the Go menu to Utilities.  This will open the Applications > Utilities folder.
    Then run Disk Utility.
Click on the upper left disk icon.
Does the S.M.A.R.T. status say “Verified”.
If not the disk/SSD is unhealthy and needs to be replaced.
Click on the icon indented below, usually called “Macintosh HD”.
    Verify Disk.
If it finishes with a green “OK” message then all is well with the disk.
If it shows errors in red then you may have found a problem.
    Click on Repair Disk Permissions.
It will give lots of messages in black and white, which are OK.
If it gives any messages in red then there is an issue to address.
It will be useful to have some test that shows the slow speed that uses standard OS X applications such as Pages, Numbers, Presenter, iTunes, iMovie... or even just the Finder opening windows or starting applications.  We can then use that test when isolating the source of the slowness.
How many seconds does it take to boot from power-on to either the login screen or the Finder is up?  Please time that.  It is a good speed test.  If it is over a minute then something is wrong.
One way to isolate the issues will be to sandbox it using another disk to test what happens with different software on different hardware disks in different locations.  That will not void the warranty.
But before going there or proceeding further let’s look at the Etrecheck and Disk Utility results, ensure the system is backed up, and then try some other standard tests.

  • T410 and Intel AC-7260

I have a T410 2522-DM2 originally equipped with a Intel N 6200 PCIE adaptor system BIOS is ver. 1..45.  Documentation for patch grw210ww rev.01 clearly  states that my T410 (windows 7-32b) will support the Intel AC-7260 PCIE card.  When I replace the PCIE with the AC-7260, I get a message from the BIOS that it is not authorized.  I have seen at least one other complaint about this misstatement-statement &/or error.  Said grw210ww documentation makes no mention of any particular BIOS version.  What's the story here, is there a specific BIOS version to make the document true? Or some other mechanism to make this thing work as advertised?  Note that grw210ww also mentions the N-6200 as being support as well.
I would appreciate an answer from some responsible for the content of Thinkpad/Lenovo technical document content.
    Thanks,
    LJB

    Welcome to the forum!
T410 does not support AC7260 with any stock BIOS.
You will need a third-party ("modded") BIOS in order to use that card in your machine.
If you could post the link that you're referring to about T410 supporting the AC card, it would be highly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    George

  • Ti 4600 128mb dying?

    Ok
When i had my case open recently, to mod my CAK4-88T cooler, one of the blue anodised ali RAM heat sinks dropped off my reference model Ti4600 (green, and about 25mm larger than the branded versions).
I thought nuthing of it, as the card is mean to operate without them anyway, and was only held on with what looked like double sided tape.
Maybe thats what it is, i dunno.
Anyway. a few days later i installed tha latest nVidia (61.76) drivers for it while engaging in some O/Cing of my CPU. Running 3dmark01se, i noticed that the test with the rotating white stallion rampant, was getting some artifacts. In fact, i ccould see through the horse as it turned (changing the cpu speed didnt help at the time, stock or o/c, it still artifacted).
A few of my games are now refusing to start, and those that do run, are sometimes throwing inconsistancies at me. (missus likes playing Harry Potter quidditch world cup at the mo, and during the cut scenes, anytyhing thats yellow ish in colour, goes whit breifly and then back to its colour again plus its cutting out back to windows) Its thrown a couple of blue screens at her, one of which was

    0000140e error
    0e10028:e7c5734e
(she wrote it down rather than coming and getting me to see it my self)
This last BSOD happened after i used drivercleaner to clean out the files after i uninstalled the 61.76 driver, and reinstalled the 56.64 which i have never had trouble with.
Now, does it sound like i need to replace the ram sinks that where on there? in which case i'll just get a Iceberq4 pro set to do the whole lot.
    Or
Do ya think the card could be on its way out?
If this post seems at all disjointed, my brains a lil fuzzy from a trip to the dentist. seems everyhere gets numb cept the area round the dam tooth

right, redid the drivers, and tested with a full detail game on MW4:mercs (yea, not the highest of requirements, but enough to make my card get a workout) and it ran ok. ALthough for some reason, and this goes back to the days of swapping the mobo, it gets laggy when i get near an opponent. But that could be the 3rd party MoD from mektek dragging it down.
I'll have to pop into maplin after work tomorro, and see what they have. May change over to the Vantec Iceberq setup (even if its just the ram coolers) as they are ll copper, not plated whatever material it is as used on stock GF4 Ti's, and they seemed to help when they where on my MSI ti4200 (why did i give that card to my nephew, shoulda kept it as spare    )

  • Remote access broken after 10.4.5-6 update

Just remotely installed the latest update on a G5 dual XServe using 'softwareupdate'.
After reboot, I can't connect to the server at all. Neither via SSH nor Server Monitor. This is a real pain, as the server is 70 miles away. I can only presume that some process has gotten way out of control during the software update, but I'm surprised the watchdog timer hasn't restarted the machine since it seemed more than happy to do that when I didn't want it to:-)
The machine is a standard install with no third party mods. Is there anyway to ensure this does not happen in future?

Well it would appear you are right! I asked someone at the office to 'unlock' the security lock for the drives and it did indeed restart fine via shutdown -r.
I am extremely grateful for your assistance, but somewhat puzzled by this being the cause of the issue.
In case any Apple engineers are interested, the only external peripheral attached to the XServe is the USB connection to our UPS.
