Pass Command to Variable to Test-Path

I'm passing a command to a vCenter in PowerCLI to backup VDS switches using a script I found on the internet. I want to do a test-path for the export location though to see if it backed up successfully. This would be okay if the portgroup name was static
but it pulls it using a $_.name variable piped in from the get-vdswitch command. If I do a test-path for that variable outside of that line then it won't recognise it will it? Here's the code.
foreach ($switch in $switches)
# Backup each vNetwork Distributed Switch not including the port groups
export-vdswitch $switch -Withoutportgroups -Description “Backup of $switch without port groups” -Destination “$full_path\$switch.without_portgroups.$date.zip“
# Backup each vNetwork Distributed Switch including the port groups
export-vdswitch $switch -Description “Backup of $switch with port groups” -Destination “$full_path\$switch.with_portgroups.$date.zip“
# Backup each port group individually
get-vdswitch $switch | Get-VDPortgroup | foreach { export-vdportgroup -vdportgroup $_ -Description “Backup of port group $($_.name)” -destination “$full_path\$($_.name).portgroup.$date.zip“
To clarify, entire code works but I need to test that they backed up. The first two lines (export-vdswitch) will be okay because $full_path, $switch and $date are declared outside of that loop. So the problem comes doing a test-path on the location of the
final command (probably could've said that briefer). Although retrieving the export path in a concise fashion would be beneficial.
Thanks in advance

Ho to clear things up? If I want to have it export to a variable called $exportedfile I can't pipe it out at the end like this for example:
get-vdswitch $switch | Get-VDPortgroup | foreach { export-vdportgroup -vdportgroup $_ -Description “Backup of port group $($_.name)” -destination “$full_path\$($_.name).portgroup.$date.zip“ | $exportedfile
If I try that it tells me that expressions are only allowed as the first element of a pipeline so how would I test-path against the output?

  • Pass login credentials into a test-path cmdlet

    Here is the scenario. I'm creating a SQL Server Job that will use Powershell to test if a session could be made to a remote server before creating one. I was able to successfully create a cmdlet that will test a path that connects to a remote shared server
    on the same domain. The remote server I'm trying to connect to is on a different domain so I need to pass along the login credentials. I'm stuck in finding the correct way to perform this. Is there a way to pass the login information without a prompt? Below

    Hi DBA_attack,
    Thanks for your posting.
    If there also occurred error after add the parameter -Credential, please also note: This parameter -Credential in test-path is not supported by any providers installed with Windows PowerShell.
    You can also try to use Invoke-Command with the credential who has the permission to access the tested file path.

  • Test-path where a directory in the path is variable

    My company has a series of fax lines and associated file shares. Faxes are processed & then dropped off into these file shares. From that point a service runs about every 60 seconds to look for files in these directories to import into a database.
    If there is a problem with the import then the service moves the file to a "HOLD" folder & files remain there until human intervention.
    I am trying to create a script that will find the HOLD directory in each of these folders and look for the existence of files, then email a group of users alerting them if there are.
    So there are several things I'm trying to accomplish.
    1. Look for files in a path where a folder in the middle of the path is variable.
    2. Send and email that will inform the recipient that there are files in the HOLD folder(s) and tell them WHICH ones
    Here's what I am starting with but it isn't working as expected.  There are files in at least one of these.  I also thought to try using some kind of foreach loop but it's eluding me.  Probably because it's late in the day for me.
    $folder = get-content -Path "\\child.domain.com\netlogon\scripts\ps\numbers.txt"
    if(Test-Path -Path "\\Server\scan import\fax\$folder\Hold" -include *.pdf, *.tif, *.jpg) {write-host "Files exist at $folder"} Else {write-host "No files in the hold folders"}
    # When I wrote this script only God and I knew what I was doing. # Now, only God Knows!

    The numbers.txt includes a list of folder names, one per line. I did come up with the following and it's working, for my purposes, so I now need to figure out how to get the results into the body of a single email.
    $parent = "\\server\scan import\fax\"
    $folders = get-content -Path "\\child.domain.com\netlogon\scripts\ps\numbers.txt"
    Foreach ($folder in $folders)
    if(Test-Path -Path "$parent$folder\HOLD\*" -PathType leaf)
    write-host "Files exist at $parent$folder\Hold"
    Else
    write-host "$folder Clear"
    I'm really only using the Write-Host actions in place of the Send-MailMessage Cmdlet, at least I think that is the command I need.
    # When I wrote this script only God and I knew what I was doing. # Now, only God Knows!

  • How can I pass a variable from Test Stand to CVI by reference

    Hi!
    I can't to pass numeric or boolean variable from Test Stand (for example: FileGlobals.StopFlag) into the step (CVI function).
    Function prototype:
    void __declspec(dllexport) __cdecl PC2_WaitWhileResponceAppear(tTestData *testData, tTestError *testError, int *iStopFlag).
    When variable has bin changed I can't see this change from my function.
    CVI 2010, Test Stand 2010
    Can anybody help me?

    Hey Rombar,
    It is certainly possible to pass variables by reference; for example, if you go to <TestStand Directory>/Examples/Demo/C and open the computer.seq file, you can see one of the example sequences that uses CVI modules. If you click on one of these steps, you'll see that some of the parameters, such as the error information, is passed with pointers. This is a pass by reference.
    To help narrow this down, it'd be good for us to figure out a few things about how the code is run. First, if you go to Configure > Adapters, select the CVI adapter and choose Configure, you can see options for this adapter. Do you have it configured to run in an external instance of CVI or as an in-process call?
    Also, if you're wanting to see a change made in TestStand in your external code, this makes me think that you're wanting to run the code and then continue to execute your TestStand sequence while the code runs. How did you configure this behavior? For example, are you calling this code as a separate sequence in a new thread, or are you using another method to run this code while the sequence continues to run?
    Finally, if we could see a screenshot of how you're configuring the parameters on the TestStand step, that might be helpful as well.

  • [RESOLVED] How I pass in my command-line variables disgusts me

    Hello,
    What I'm trying to do is to make an easily configurable script that the user can run with just a few basic command line variables (some of our users are not programmers.)  Now, here's my problem, when it comes to extracting the variables from the command line, it's kind of messy.  Lets say I have the following command:
    $ ./hl_script.sh --config-file=config_abc.txt --rate=5000 --data-dump=/opt/dump_area -v
    "-v" means verbose
    Now, given the weird arrangement of the different types of command line arguments, I'd like to extract the salient parts of the information that I care about.  However, at this moment, all I have is the "cut" command which can easily get into undefined behavior territory should the user misstype an input.  I would love to know how you have done this and what your approach to this problem is.
    This is the code that I have so far:
    # this is where we run the initial test and check if the user entered the
    # help flag in order to see how to properly use this application.
    if [ $# -gt 1 ]; then
    for argument in $@
    do
    if [ $argument = "--help" ]; then
    echo "Here is how you would use this software and the flags that would"
    echo " be useful."
    echo " --help"
    echo " Brings up this display and shows a listing of the options"
    echo " that can be used to better utilize this app."
    echo ""
    echo " --config-file=N"
    echo " Specify the config file that we'd like to use."
    echo ""
    exit 0
    elif [ `cut $argument | cut -d'=' -f 1` = "--config-file" ]; then
    # read-in the config file that we specified and then proceed to set a
    # bunch of environment variables that we need.

    The following Automator application has been successfully tested to do the following on Mavericks 10.9.5:
    Get and pass an optional month value
    Full month name (e.g. March)
    Three character month name (e.g. Mar)
    Month value as  integer (e.g. March is 3)
    Place the month value in a variable named CurrentMonth
    Ask for Finder item(s)
    Get the value of the CurrentMonth variable
    Passes a list {filename, CurrentMonth} as an argument to:
    Run AppleScript
    Make a property for the containing folder for your "Month Announcements" folder
    Get the list from 5
    Set myFile to list item 1
    Set myMonth to list item 2
    Build the currentMonthFolder string
    Check if the "Month Announcement" folder existsIf not, makes the folder
    Moves the file to the appropriate "Month Announcements" folder

  • Variable with Replacement Path

    Hi, I have two queries. The results of the first one should be the input for the second one. E.g. the first query shows a list of personnel numbers and additional information. These personnel numbers shall be overtaken by the second query. The personnel numbers belong to "Dimensions" in the Query Designer. I alread tried to create a variable with replacement path to the dimension personnel number. I implementet this variable in both the first and the second query (under: "rows"). It`s no "Formular variable" and no "Calculated Key Figure" but a "Characteristic Value Variable" of a Dimension. The problem is now that I cannot execute any of the two queries. The error "Abort the query cannot be released for OLE DB for OLAP. System error in programm CL_RSR_REQUEST and form PREPARE_VQUERIES:INVALID_
    What is my mistake? Thank you in advance! Eve

    Hi Eve,
    It is possible to connect the 2 queries using a Replacement Path characteristic variable. You would need to create the variable on the char whose values you want to pass from Q1 to Q2. The variable will be of type replacement path and you will need to enter the name of Q1 from which it will get the values. Make sure that you include this char in the query definition of Q1 and Q2. In Q2 you will restrict the characteristic using this variable. DO not use this variable (replacement path) in Q1.
    In your query properties check if you have turned on the checkmark for Release for OLE DB for OLAP (3rd tab). If the check mark is there, then remove it.
    We are using the scenario in a couple of places, and it works very well.

  • Creating Variable with Replacement Path to get value from ANOTHER Variable

    Hi all,
        Is anyone has created the Variable with Replacement Path to get the value from another User Entry Variable, PLEASE ?
    First created the User Entry Variable (ZV_X) and it accepts the date range like '01/01/2009 - 01/31/2009'. Next created the Characteristic variable (ZV_Y) of Replacement Path for which source variable will be ZV_X and we should get the 'FROM Date' (01/01/2009) from the selection (ZV_X) into it (ZV_Y).
    While creating the Characteristic variable (ZV_Y) of Replacement Path, I didn't find my newly created ZV_X variable in the list of available variables under 'Variable' header in 'Replacement Path' tab and it is causing the error 'Source to replace variable ZV_Y is not defined'. How could I create the Characteristic variable of Replacement Path for my requirement, PLEASE ?
    The following is from help.sap..com:
    Replace with Characteristic Value
    Text and formula variables with the processing type Replacement Path can be replaced with a corresponding characteristic value. In the variable editor, on the General tab page, you specify under Reference Characteristic the characteristic that is to be referenced by the replacement. On the Replacement Path tab page, you can choose whether the variable is replaced with the From or the To Value and with the Key or the Name of the characteristic value. You can also specify the Offset Start and Offset Length for the output.
    Replace with Variable
    Characteristic value variables, hierarchy variables, text variables, and formula variables with the Replacement Path processing type can take their values from a different variable.
    The following prerequisites need to be fulfilled:
    Variable
    ●      The variable must not be input-ready
    ●      The variable must represent a single value
    Source Variable
    ●      The source variable must not be a hierarchy node variable
    ●      The source variable must be input-ready
    ●      The source variable must be available in the query
    ●      The source variable must represent a single value or an interval
    In the variable editor, on the Replacement Path tab page, you specify the source variable from which the value is to be determined. The value is either determined from the key, the external attribute of the key, the description, or the attribute value. You can specify an Offset Start and an Offset Length for the output here. The variable is replaced on the variable screen upon each data release.
    Thanks,
    Venkat.

  • Trying to pass and object variable to a method

    I have yet another question. I'm trying to display my output in succession using a next button. The button works and I get what I want using test results, however what I really want to do is pass it a variable instead of using a set number.
    I want to be able to pass the object variables myProduct, myOfficeSupplies, and maxNumber to method actionPerformed so they can be in-turn passed to the displayResults method which is called in the actionPerformed method. Since there is no direct call to actionPerformed because it is called within one of the built in methods, I can't tell it to receive and pass those variables. Is there a way to do it without having to pass them through the built-in methods?

  • How to pass values to variables in WAD 7.0 using java script

    Hi.,
    My requirement is based on WAD 7.0.
    The sales value has to displayed in WAD using graph with various chart types.
    I have created variables for plant and material group in a query.
    I have created drop down box for plant with all plants in it, check box for material group and a Submit button in WAD in FORM tag of HTML coding.
    Once all the values are set in drop down box, checkbox and if the user clicks on submit button, the values has to captured by the variables for which I have created and the graph has to be aligned to the new values in variables.
    Kindly help me how to use java script to get the values from FORM and pass it to variables.
    Regards,
    Selva

    Hi Selva,
    You do not need to use Javascript for this. Instead you can achieve this by using API Commands in WAD 7.0.
    Please configure Action on the ButtonGroup webitem to use 'Commands'.
    ->Choose Command 'Set Variables Values / SET_VARIABLES_STATE' under Commands for Web Templates
    ->Set Display Variable Screen setting to OFF
    ->Choose Query Variable for Plant, Select Variable Type as 'Binding Type', Binding Type as 'Data Provider Selection', Data Provider as the one you have assigned to the Dropdown webitem, Characteristic as 0PLANT or as that assigned to the Dropdown webitem
    ->Repeat above steps for Query Variable Material Group
    Now when you make a selection from the Dropdown webitems, the Chart output will change accordingly. Let me know if this helps.

  • Passing an APEX variable to another web page outside of APEX

    I need to pass an item variable from an APEX page to another web site outside of APEX. Does anyone know what syntax I would need to use? It needs to keep the session in tact.
    Thanks.
    Kelly

    Ah, as I read more closely ...   You say
    FIND_USER_IN_DB is defined as an application item.
    Application items get treated differently from Page Items.  They aren't on any page so there's nothing to directly tie them to a particular page operation. [You may have tried an obvious approach that doesn't work.]  Please check where you
    sets FIND_USER_IN_DB to the value in &P8_USERNAME.
    Does it say "Page Item" / "Item" there?   Check the selector?  Can you select an Application Item.  If memory serves, my (sad) experience is that you can list an Application Item here but it doesn't "work" and there's no warning that it's a problem -- except it doesn't work!  Application Items can't be given values this way.  Hey, it is what it is.  That's the way it doesn't work!
    So I believe you must "Submit" FIND_USER_IN_DB and then you can reference it on Page 11.  There must be several ways to do this.  I'll seaarch / ponder for a plain vanilla one.
    Howard
    (more)
    Well, maybe I have to take it back.   There is this documentation that suggests you can pass Application Items. http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E37097_01/doc/doc.42/e35125/bldapp_item_app.htm#BCEHFDDJ   See Note in Paragraph 8.
    "Note: If you must set this item's value in session state using Ajax, then an Unrestricted protection level must be used for the item (for example in Dynamic Actions, Set Value, Page Items to Submit or Cascading LOVs, Page Items to Submit)."
    I'll try to run a test.  Still, the best solution for me still seems to assign the value of P8_USERNAME to FIND_USER_IN_DB and then submit the page which will plce the value in session.
    (more)  I was able to pass an Application Item if I set Session State Protection to Unrestricted.  Probably not a good idea!

  • Variable in a path

    I have a variable, called "contentp". It get set by buttons
    like so:
    contentp = "p1";
    I would like to use that variable in a path, but am not sure
    how. I was
    thinking something like the following, but get an error
    message.
    nav. + contentp + .enabled = false;
    The error I am getting is:
    Expected a field name after '.' operator.
    What am I doing wrong? How can I work around that?
    Thank you for any help!
    Brian

    Posting here as well...
    Your getting there, sort of
    Couple of changes.
    1. change nav.btnDis.enabled = false; to read
    nav[btnDis].enabled = false;
    2. change the code in the buttons to read:
    nav.p1.onRelease = function() {
    btnDis = "p1";
    contentBehaviors();
    Note the order. I'm assuming you want to disable the button
    that was just clicked on, and that's what this code does. Other
    wise it won't disable until you click the *next* button. Also note
    that the button is surrounded by quotes. That means your assigning
    btnDis the value of "p1", a string. Then, when you call it in
    enableBtns() using the line I gave you above your referencing the
    string "p1" as an object (hence the [ ]'s ).
    Let me know how it turns out.
    Just for fun here is the entire AS code I used to test with.
    I placed 4 buttons in a clip named nav, put the nav clip on a blank
    stage and pasted the following AS into frame 1 of _root:
    function disableBtns(){
    //disable the buttons
    nav.p1.enabled = false;
    nav.p2.enabled = false;
    nav.p3.enabled = false;
    nav.p4.enabled = false;
    function enableBtns(){
    //enable the buttons after the opening sequence
    nav.p1.enabled = true;
    nav.p2.enabled = true;
    nav.p3.enabled = true;
    nav.p4.enabled = true;
    nav[btnDis].enabled = false;
    nav.p2.onRelease = function() {
    btnDis = "p2";
    contentBehaviors();
    nav.p1.onRelease = function() {
    btnDis = "p1";
    contentBehaviors();
    nav.p3.onRelease = function() {
    btnDis = "p3";
    contentBehaviors();
    nav.p4.onRelease = function() {
    btnDis = "p4";
    contentBehaviors();
    function contentBehaviors(){
    enableBtns()
    }
