Passing of objects to methods

pl go thru this code...
public class A{
public static void main(String args[]) {
A aa = new A();
StringBuffer a = new StringBuffer("One");
StringBuffer b = new StringBuffer("Two");
aa.swap(a,b);
System.out.println("a is "+ a +" b is " + b);
void swap (StringBuffer a, StringBuffer b) {
a.append(" more");
b=a;
Output : a is One more b is Two
In java always parameters (objects) are passed by reference... then why doesnt the above make the references a and b to point to the same object in memory within the swap() method.

Hi.
This is a point of frequent confusion.
All parameter passing in Java is pass by value. In the case of parameters of reference type, it is the reference that is the value to be passed.
In your example, you call the swap() method using variables a and b as actual parameters. a and b both hold references to StringBuffer instances. These references (i.e. the values of the variables) are copied into the formal parameters a and b of your swap() method. This means that your assignment 'b=a' sets the value of the local variable b equal to the value of the local variable a (the values of b and a are references to StringBuffers). The fact that these variables hold references doesn't change the fact that it's just a local assignment.

  • Trying to pass and object variable to a method

    I have yet another question. I'm trying to display my output in succession using a next button. The button works and I get what I want using test results, however what I really want to do is pass it a variable instead of using a set number.
    I want to be able to pass the object variables myProduct, myOfficeSupplies, and maxNumber to method actionPerformed so they can be in-turn passed to the displayResults method which is called in the actionPerformed method. Since there is no direct call to actionPerformed because it is called within one of the built in methods, I can't tell it to receive and pass those variables. Is there a way to do it without having to pass them through the built-in methods?

  • ActiveX Object Creation method to pass to an Invoke Node

    Hi!
    I'm trying to optimize the way in which I use MathCAD from LabVIEW.  One of my VIs is having really poor performance in terms of execution speed and memory usage.
    My VI converts a 2D LabVIEW array of doubles into a 2d Mathcad matrix and puts that matrix into a Mathcad worksheet.  The issue is that you do not just pass the 2d array of doubles into the SetValue invoke node as a variant.  You have to create a Mathcad.MatrixValue object, and then pass the object to the SetValue invoke node.
    Here is the example code provided in the Mathcad developers manual:
    SetElement Method
    var m = CreateObject("Mathcad.MatrixValue");
    for(row = 49; row >=
    0; --row)
    for(col = 9; col >= 0;
    --col)
    var val = row + col;
    m.SetElement(row, col, val);
    Here is my implimentation in LabVIEW:
    Here is my SubVI
     Here is my main VI:
    My SubVI is running out of memory and throwing the following error:
     Exception occured in mplrun: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown. in NL SubVIs Library.lvlib:Convert LabVIEW 2d Array to MathCAD Variant Matrix (SubVI).vi->test.vi
    It doesn't always throw the error.  When I watch the memory consumption of LabVIEW it goes up to about 250k and then drops to 90k and slowly builds back up to 250k.  Initialy starting the code takes awhile too on my computer.  From start of VI until first loop iteration it is about 20 seconds, and then about 150-250ms after that.  Not very good performance.
    Any advice on how to optimize this code would be appreciated.  I'm not really sure when I should close some of these references.  I tried closing the reference in my converting SubVI, but I guess that destroys it so MathCAD can't use it.
    I'm in LabVIEW 2009.  Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks for your time and input!
    -Nic

    I'm not sure this will solve your problems but it should help.  You need to close ALL of your references to Mathcad objects when you're done using them.  That means you need to close the reference to the Mathcad MatrixValue after you pass it to Mathcad (to do this you'll need to convert it back from a variant, or pass the reference directly out of your subVI), and you should also close the reference to the matrix that you get back after you've converted it to a LabVIEW array.  Otherwise you'll continuously allocate more and more memory rather than allowing it to be reused.
    Less importantly, you should also close your references to IMathcadWorksheets and IMathcadWorksheet (but since you only open them once it's not causing your memory problems).

    If an object is passed by reference,It isn't. Instead, a pointer to the object is passed
    by value.That is exactly what passing by reference is.
    Objects passed by reference can be modified and it will affect the caller, but modifying the reference (assiging a new object) won't affect the caller.
    I m trying to pass parameters into a method so that
    they can be altered and returned, can any one
    suggest a way to do this.I think this is bad OO programing, it results in less readable code and may be hard to debug. Better is to make the method return the result and let the caller assign the new value. (This is my personal oppinion at least)

    Thanks for the quick reply.Actually the web service is already deployed on the server.What I want to do is use existing wsdl file of the deployed web service and invoke the method of the same using oracle PM.
    If I remove element which uses apachesoap:Map type it just works fine also I am getting the complex object returned by the web service method.But when I try to set appDataDef which is of type apachesoap:Map(Axis conversion for java.util.Map and it uses namespace xmlns:apachesoap="http://xml.apache.org/xml-soap") I am getting the error.
    Can you give me some direction to use this exising wsdl file to set map object or it is not possible.

  • Error:Work item 000000001099:Object FLOWITEM method EXECUTE cannot be execu

    Hello experts,
    I have created a Sales order workflow whr after creation sales order will go to 1 person inbox and he will check the SO thoroughly and thn i hv added a user decision step for APPROVED or REJECTED for same person.
    Now after creation of sales order it goin to the person inbox for checkin SO but when he is saving it thn decision screen with button APPROVED or REJCTED is not coming and m getting error :Work item 000000001099: Object FLOWITEM method EXECUTE cannot be executed. and error: Error when processing node '0000000024' (ParForEach index 000000)
    i checked the agent mapping for both step....and thr is no error in agent mappin...in both steps i have mapped same rule with responsibility IDs
    PLz suggest urgently wht can be cause of error.
    Regards
    Nitin

    Hi Nitin,
    I think this seems to be an agent assignment issue.
    To debug this issue go to the workflow log and check if the agents are correctly being picked by the rule or not. Simulate the rule and check for the agents being picked.
    In the workflow log, check the agent for the User Decision step. If there is no agent found then there might be some issue with the data passed to rule.
    Hope this helps!

    Saumya

  • Unable to pass enum to a method

    I am trying to use a enumation to list all the graphics drivers available and when I pass it from my main class to a another objects setGraphicsDriver method (with corresponding argument) I get the error:
    init:

    ie.setGraphicsDriver(myobj);
    1 error
    BUILD FAILED (total time: 0 seconds)
    Here is my main class:
    package engineframework;
    public class Main {
    static enum GRAPHICS_MODE { NULL, SOFTWARE, OPENGL, DX8, DX9 }
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    IrrlichtEngine ie = new IrrlichtEngine();
    GRAPHICS_MODE myobj = GRAPHICS_MODE.OPENGL;
    ie.setGraphicsDriver(myobj);
    ie.initialiseDevice();
    The setGraphicsDriver method that fails:
    public void setGraphicsDriver(GRAPHICS_MODE gm) {
    System.out.println(gm); // debugging info
    // Ensure that the gm GRAPHICS_MODE is actually initialised, if not set it to OPENGL
    if(gm == null) {
    gm = GRAPHICS_MODE.OPENGL;
    switch(gm) {
    case NULL:
    graphicsDriver = E_DRIVER_TYPE.EDT_NULL;
    break;
    case SOFTWARE:
    graphicsDriver = E_DRIVER_TYPE.EDT_SOFTWARE;
    break;
    case OPENGL:
    graphicsDriver = E_DRIVER_TYPE.EDT_OPENGL;
    break;
    case DX8:
    graphicsDriver = E_DRIVER_TYPE.EDT_DIRECT3D8;
    break;
    case DX9:
    graphicsDriver = E_DRIVER_TYPE.EDT_DIRECT3D9;
    break;
    default:
    graphicsDriver = E_DRIVER_TYPE.EDT_SOFTWARE;
    break;
    I am sure its something really silly but its driving me nuts :)

    I think I am close, this is what I now have:
    private static E_DRIVER_TYPE graphicsDriver = null;
    /// GRAPHICS_MODE - List of all available graphics modes
    private static enum GRAPHICS_MODE {
    NULL (E_DRIVER_TYPE.EDT_NULL),
    SOFTWARE (E_DRIVER_TYPE.EDT_SOFTWARE),
    SOFTWARE2 (E_DRIVER_TYPE.EDT_SOFTWARE2),
    OPENGL (E_DRIVER_TYPE.EDT_OPENGL),
    DX8 (E_DRIVER_TYPE.EDT_DIRECTX8),
    DX9 (E_DRIVER_TYPE.EDT_DIRECTX9);
    // Has to return a value...?
    private GRAPHICS_MODE(E_DRIVER_TYPE edt) {
    this.graphicsDriver = edt;
    public E_DRIVER_TYPE getGraphicsDriver() {
    return graphicsDriver();
    Now the code return an error that I need to provide a return value (see program comment). I am not sure why I would need to do that since I looked up some more advaned enum examples and I see it being done the way that you informed me of.
    Also thanks for the assistance, too bad they don't include this tips in books :)

  • How can I pass an object to a function by value?

    Hi
    I have a function with an argument. this argument is an object. I don't want to alter this object. But java passes this object by reference and some fields in this object are altered after function return.
    How can I pass this object by value and keep my original data unbroken?
    thanks for any help

    How can I pass this object by value and keep my original data unbroken?How you approach it is likely to depend on how much control you have over the code in question. If it's legacy code and has been badly designed, there's probably very little you can do to protect existing code short of a complete refactoring.
    What you could do as an interim measure is:
    1. Create an immutable wrapper to your existing mutable class.
    2. Create new methods that replicate the existing ones, but take the immutable class instead.
    3. Deprecate the old methods.
    This won't break client code, but they will now get warnings when they compile and you can add documentation to point them to the new class/methods.
    If you are in control of the code (especially if you're still in the design stages), you've got several options:
    1. As Dr.Clap says, make your class immutable (probably best).
    2. If this isn't possible, create mutable and immutable variants of your class. This is often best achieved by hanging them both from an interface.

  • Problem in passing/returning objects over dynamic web service call

    Hi Friends,
    I am beginner in java web service.
    Here is the problem I am facing when I pass/return user defined objects to remote web service method using dynamic we service call.
    The client can call the remote web service method in 2 ways.
    1. By generating client stubs using WSDL file
    - In this case, I am able to pass/return the user defined objects to remote method without any issue only when the server side web services are deployed in any server(jboss)
    - But in java 1.6 & above, the web services can be deployed without server using endpoint. In this case, I am not able to pass/return objects over web service calls.
    2. Without generating client stubs (dynamic web service call)
    - This will establish a connection at run time using the given WSDL file (I have attached the document). I have to form an XML(This will contain API name, arguments) string as input at run time
    - In this case, it allows only string as argument while passing & returning.
    Please let me know if you can help me on this.
    Regards,
    pani

  • Passing text component to methods

    I have a method that reads a file and output puts it to a JTextArea. Everything is working fine but I am wondering if I can pass an object from a class above JTextArea (like TextComponent). Looking for a generic feel with whatever text based component I passed...will this make a difference with lightweight and heavyweigth components (swing vs. awt)? Or even streams for that matter? Will byte and character streams act differently?
    What is the super class of all text based gui components?
    What is the super class of all streams?
    Yes I have read the java api doc on streams and using swing! Thanks

    You have me until
    Everything is working fine but I am wondering if I can pass an object from a class above JTextArea (like TextComponent).What are you asking for here?
    You want to know if you can pass an object to a method? Yes.
    You want to know if you can modify a class further up in JTextArea's hierarchy, so it has a method that passes an object to another method? Yes, by extending it and implementing the functionality you want.
    Looking for a generic feel with whatever text based component I passed...will this make a difference with lightweight and heavyweigth components (swing vs. awt)?Not sure what you were asking for in the first place, so I'm unable to help you with this one.
    Or even streams for that matter? Will byte and character streams act differently?If you're asking, "When I pass a stream through a method, will it act differently when I use it inside that method?", then I can answer no, it will not. You are passing your stream by reference.
    class MyClass {
       private Object anObject;
       public MyClass() {
          anObject = new Object();
          MySecondClass secondClass = new MySecondClass(anObject);
    class MySecondClass {
       private Object theSameObject;
       public MyClass(Object argument) {
          theSameObject = argument;
    }In the above example, anObject was created in MyClass, and passed to the constructor of MySecondClass. The field theSameObject in MySecondClass is set to point to the Object passed into its constructor, which just happens to be the Object anObject created in MyClass. anObject was created in MyClass. theSameObject is essentially the exact same Object in that it references (points to) anObject.
    If I'm wrong feel free to call me on it, java gurus.
    What is the super class of all text based gui components?AWT or Swing?
    If it's AWT, look up the API for an AWT text component, try TextField, and look at the class hierarchy.
    If it's Swing, do the same for JTextField. You can easily do some detective work and figure out the super classes of 'text based gui components'.
    What is the super class of all streams?You can do the same as above for streams as well.
    Yes I have read the java api doc on streams and using swing! ThanksIf you've read the API docs on streams and Swing, then why did you ask the last two questions? Not trying to offend, it just seems kind of wierd.

  • JNI - Passing an object containing an array field

    I need to pass an object to a native method. The object contains several int fields and a field that is an int array (contains 32 int).
    I have no problem with the int fields, but do not know how to access the int array field in the C code. What approach should be used to get/set values in the int array field?
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

    I have been reading up on the subject, but I guess I'm just an idiot. If all the answers were obvious from reading the specification then there wouldn't be much point to this forum.
    For int fields in the object passed to the native function I do the following to set the value:
    fid = (*env)->GetFieldID(env, cls, "intFieldName", "I");
    (*env)->SetIntField(env, myObj, fid, newValue);
    For a field that is an array of int, it seems that I can get the field ID as follows:
    fid = (*env)->GetFieldID(env, cls, "arrayFieldName", "[I");
    The "Get<Type>Field" and "Set<Type>Field" methods can be used for object, boolean, byte, char, short, int, long, float, double. Nothing specific here for array. Should I use the GetObjectField method, if so can the object field then be handled as an array? This is where I am missing something. I have experimented with using the SetIntArrayRegion method but this causes an exception - obviously missing a necessary step here. I am hoping someone here can provide guidance on what I am missing, what JNI functions I should be using, or refer me to the appropriate page of the specification or other document where it is explained (for idiots like me).
