Paste a label on a Disk?

I know that this will make most of you laugh, but can I paste a label of write with ink on the face of a disk without damaging it or making it unusable?

Hi,
I would NOT use any kind of adhesive label, whether it was part of a labeling kit or not. Many slot loading CD/DVDs have a narrow insertion slot, and I have seen these labels make the DVD stick in the player.
I've been using a Lacie drive that laser etches an image on the front of the DVD. It takes a special DVD/CD designed for use and takes quite a while to finish (about 20 minutes), but it looks cool and my clients like it. I will also use one of the Epson printers that does full color directly on the disk (again, special disks required). For everyday stuff where appearance doesn't matter, I use plain disks and a marker designed for CD/DVDs.

    2) How to SMI Label/Format a disk while OS Installation in Solaris 11.1?
As we know that ZFS is the default filesystem in Solaris 11.
We have seen in the Oracle documentation that for rpool below are recommended:
    - A disk that is intended for a ZFS root pool must be created with an SMI label, not an EFI label.
    - Create root pools with slices by using the s* identifier.
    - ZFS applies an EFI label when you create a storage pool with whole disks.
    - In general, you should create a disk slice with the bulk of disk space in slice 0.
I have seen the solution that using format -e, we change the labelling but all the data will be lost, whats the way to apply a SMI Label/Format on a rpool disks while OS Installation itself.
Please provide me the steps to SMI Label a disk while installaing Solaris 11.1 OS.

Oracle recommends below things on rpool: (thats reason wanted to apply SMI Label)

  • Labeling factory recovery disks

    Hello,  new 520 owner here.
I made the Recovery Disks that are part of the setup.   Some how I labeled two the disks indentically and the short story is:  they need the correct labels.
Is there a way to review the files on each of the 4 disks and come up with a good idea of what to label?
    Thanks

  • Can't paste password for new encrypted disk image.

    Howdy all!
I have been trying to create an encrypted disk image with the Disk Utility, but I'm having trouble with putting in the password.
Using the password assistant, it only fills one of the two password fields, and I cannot copy/paste the password to the other field. If I generate a password elsewhere I cannot paste it into either box as well.
If I switch applications from Disk Utility and come back to the password dialog the menubar says I am still in whatever application I was last (in this case it says Firefox at the very left) and the Edit menu is completely grayed out.
Any idea how to get a non-typeable password into this dialog?
    Thanks for your help.
    Mike

You can paste it in if you use hdiutil to create or mount the disk image (In Terminal.app). That's the
only way to go if you use a "bullet proof monster" password like I do.
To create an encrypted, sparse disk image, open a Terminal window and cd to the directory in which
you want to create the image file. For example:
    cd ~/Desktop
    Then type the command:
hdiutil create -size thesize -encryption -type SPARSE -fs HFS+ thename
    live command example:
hdiutil create -size 1g -encryption -type SPARSE -fs HFS+ myimage
(this will create a 1gigabyte sparse image with the hfs format with the name "myimage.sparseimage"
#note: I love sparseimages and sparsebundles because they mount so quickly#
Above, the size is the maximum size that the volume will ever be able to contain, for example,
660m for 660 megabytes or 1g for one gigabyte. Note that if you want the image file to remain
below a certain size (such as the size of a CD) you must allow for approximately 10% overhead.
Also above, thename is the name of the image file you want to create, not the volume name.
The volume name will be "untitled". Rename as you would any other mounted volume (after it is
    mounted).
You will be asked for a password or phase to secure your file. In terminal you may copy and paste
or use command + V keyboard combo. It will mount normally after that.
I don't use the "Remember password (add to Keychain)" function because my passphrase will be
visible in the Keychain to anyone with physical access to your computer.
Instead I use Terminal to open my new image.
    Open terminal.app, simply type:
    hdiutil attach /path/to/imagefile
    example:
    hdiutil attach /Users/kj/Desktop/myimage.sparseimage
(remember, you can drag and drop the file path into the terminal from Finder)
Terminal will ask for your password, simply cut and paste from your favorite password program
    (such as "1Password").
There is a manual page available; type man hdiutil in the Terminal.
    Enjoy,
    Kj

  • Mac does not boot past white loading screen and disk cannot be repaired?

So when I turn on my Macbook Pro and it does not boot past a white screen with the Apple logo, loading wheel and progress bar. When the progress bar completes, the Macbook shuts down and when I open it again the cycle is repeated. I have opened it in Safe mode and it still showed the same thing. So I opened it in Recovery Mode and had Disk Utility verify and repair Macintosh HD. As it turns out, Disk Utility said Macintosh HD is beyond repair and I need to back up my files and reformat the whole Mac. Unfortunately, I have never used Time Machine since I started using the Mac and I obviously cannot use it now since startup does not even get past the white screen.
How do I reformat the Mac when it does not even go beyond the white screen during startup? My Mac did not come with any recovery or installation disks. Are my unbacked up files gone for good?
    Thanks.

Since you are able to get into Recovery Mode (Command+R), you can erase/format your Mac via Disk Utility.
Your files/data might be OK. One way to get your data off since you have no back up would be to have another Mac and connect the two via a Thunderbolt cable or even an ethernet cable (I think), then restart your 'bad' Mac into Target Mode by restarting and pressing the T key. Then go onto the 'good' Mac and see if you can copy the data files you want over to it.

  • Paper labels for backup disks

I burned all my iPhoto Library images to a CD. I have a lot of round Avery-style paper labels for CD's. How do I print my contents on the labels? Guess what? Appleworks is conveniently not included with the Intel Mini, in case it might do the trick. Thanks for any HELP!!!

I use Photoshop to create a template for my labels (Memorex). I know some of the label brands supply standard templates, some of which are Mac compatible,. These can be opened in an Image editor such as Photoshop, or even an Image Editor supplied by the label mfg. Printing would be from the Image Editor app.
I don't believe Appleworks can accomplish this type of label printing.

  • Deleting past backups from time machine disk

    Hi all
I was wondering how do you delete old time machine backups?
    Josh

    Hi Barry,
I don't know about Josh's reasons, but I can give you two from my personal experience:
    1) If you use an OS X Server that shares one of its drives as a Time Machine location for the clients, they will create sparsebundles (containing the Backups.backupdb) on the share. The also do backup thinning, but if the drive runs out of space and more than one backup is currently running it is possible that the backup fails due to free space suddenly being not available anymore. It usually works fine with only 1 concurrent backup.
    2) You want to move your TM partition to another drive/partition and it is a little too big for that. Deleting some old backups can help.

  • Disk Label requirement

    Hi,
Any one explain, why disk labeling required . If there is no disk label it will create problem, please clarify.
    Regards,
    Siva

I'm not in the expert class, I'm simply another Solaris administrator but I can give you a simple answer. The disk label is required because it provides some very basic low level information needed by the system for disk access. If the disk is divided into partitions, the disk label would give an indication as to the location and size of each partition. If you wanted to mount a filesystem stored in the fifth partition on the disk, the system can use the data recorded in the disk label to find that partition. Of course, things have a way of getting complicated. There are different sorts of disk labels so you can have situations where you have the wrong kind label on a disk for a particular purpose. That's where understanding the requirements can get tricky.

  • Using disk label on udev rules?

    Hello,
Until just a few hours ago, when I plugged my external hard drive in I had to run a script to mount it with sudo, as I couldn't get it automounted. Then I saw a workaround in some thread over here, using the udev rules proposed at the bottom of the Udev wiki article.
After a reboot, and after some hours I didn't remember I had created that rule, so I went to konsole and run my script, which returned "Disc not found". That's because it checks there is that device under /dev/disk/by-label/. As I checked afterwards, the disk was automounted on some directory under /media, but it there were no symlinks to it nor to my pendrive under /dev/disk. This is a problem as my script did something like "mount /dev/disk/by-label/$LABEL /mnt/$LABEL", and Amarok's collection is under there, so if I change the collection directory every time I reboot (or every time I plug the disk) it might be mounted on a different directory (current one is /media/usbhd-sdb1), depending on the order I plug the usb storage devices, or even random if more than one is plugged on boot (not sure about this).
I suppose this is because when I plug the disk (or pendrive) udev applies the first rule it finds, so I think a possible workaround for my problem is to change the mount directory on the udev rule. And here is where my question comes: I see NAME="%k" and then %k used as the device name under /dev (in this case sdb1). Could I use some variable to keep the label of the disk and then mount it on /mnt/$LABEL, for example? I think this way I couldn't automount any device without label, but every pendrive I've seen is labeled by default so that wouldn't be a problem.
Thank you for reading that bible, and thank you again if you answer
    Bye!

I think what you were looking for may have been $env{ID_FS_LABEL}.  I've got the following as my udev rules for getting automatically mounted drives with the mountpoint set to the partition label instead of just a number.  Not particularly robust when there are two partitions with the same label, but I haven't gotten around to writing a fix for it yet.  If it works for you, maybe we should put it on the wiki.

    Folks !

I have tried following (all to no avail)

    did set-defaults reset-all
checked probe-ide and show disks output to make sure CDROM is recognized - it is primary slave.
swapped another IDE CD-ROM drived pulled from a PC. It was recognized but still not bootable.
Makes me wonder if PROM/NVRAM is corrupted. Hard disk

as per the message it appears either you have a bad CD drive or CD media . If you have another machine try to boot this CD and verify it is working there. If the CD is ok you will have to swap the cd drive for testing

  • Can't open disk label package

    Hi,
i just tried to make a boot DVD for Solaris 9 9/05 from a image file (.iso)
the iso file size is about 4.383GB.
tried with the nero express with the option copy image to disk.
succefully burnt the details, even the expected .flar file exists in the burnt DVD.
But when i tried in the SUN machine E2900, i got the following error,
    Rebooting with command: boot cdrom
ERROR: disk-label do_read: Short disk read
    Can't open disk label package
    ERROR: Can't open boot-device

We couldn't get anyone at website we ordered the product from to respond. Quick at taking our money but no help afterwards.

Iderga are you able to register your serial number at http://www.adobe.com/?  You can find more details on how to accomplish this at Find your serial number quickly - http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html.  I would recommend registering your serial number to verify that it is valid.

  • Problem Restoring Factory settings from Rescue CD (no Recovery Disk 1)

I am trying to reset my Lenovo 3000 N100 to factory settings from the Recovery and Rescue CDs I created when I first got the laptop.  At the time, the system created 3 disks which were labeled: Lenovo Rescue S/U; 1C and Final C.
The process starts with the Rescue S/U, but after the initial reboot it asks for Disk 1.  I have tried all 3 disks, but none of them are accepted as "Disk 1".  The only options are OK and Cancel.  When I select OK, it asks for Disk 1.  When I select Cancel, it reboots the system returns to the recovery screen, and asks for Disk 1.
This is an endless loop.  Can't get past it's looking for Disk 1.

    Gerry_M, welcome to the forum,
    there could be two possible issues at work here which I can think of;
after booting from the cd are you choosing to restore your system to factory or to an image? You must select the factory option.
Are you getting a message asking for a "supplemental disc"? If so you need to click no at this point and it should then ask for the first recovery disc.
    Hope this helps
