Patch Tool problem
Here are two examples of using the Patch Tool. On left is the original and rthe other using the P/Tool is the results. What can be done about this?
Secondly, is there any way in CS6 to 'move and re-align' such things as the knife and spoon?
Thanks for your time.
James
Thanks Howard,
I took your advice, but as you can see, no difference at all Q. Can this be done in ANY graphic program?

Hi, I have this annoying problem with the patch tool that whenever I use it, i.e., drag the selected area to a new location it pastes the selected area as if it were smudged, such as feathered, and I practically can't use it. I have checked the selection and it is not feathered, but still, the selection being pasted is smudged. Any settings that I am not aware of?
Thanks. The Patch (content aware) tool is affected by the area around your selection. To get around the problem, make a selection of the beak and he surround without the bird and put it on a separate layer as shown here. Then select the beak and apply the Patch command. Without the dark bird for reference, you will get the result you want.

Laptop mode tools problem with kernel 3.0
today I just updated the system and my laptop runs dramatically hotter after that. I read the archwiki, it does talk about the laptop mode tools problem with kernel 3.0 but when I opened the file /usr/sbin/laptop_mode, the lines which the wiki mentions are not there. Does anyone here have the same problem and can you offer the solution?
Here is my /usr/sbin/laptop_mode

# This is a 2 phase locking approach. LMT_REQ_LOCK is the outer lock and LMT_INVOC_LOCK is the inner lock
# We take this approach to ensure the scenario that, "At any point when an event occurs (AC/BATT), the
# kernel can generate multiple events spanning over a couple of events. The first event is honored and
# lmt executes. If the last event triggered at the 9th second, there is a fair chance that a good amount
# of state change would have occured in the OS, to honor that state, we keep an outer lock (LMT_REQ_LOCK)
# handy, so that those changes can also be applied and not forgotten.
# Workflow:
# Event-1 is generated and lmt executes (lmt runtime could span 5-10 seconds)
# At seventh second, 4 events generate. But Event-1 is still running.
# We don't want to discard all the remaining 4 events, but at least honor 1 so that we can act to the changes
# that occured in the last 7 seconds.
# So, Event-2 acquire LMT_REQ_LOCK and waits to acquire LMT_INVOC_LOCK (which is acquire by Event-1)

esacI had the problem but edited the line in /usr/sbin/laptop_mode and it worked. But thoes lines are not there anymore. I guess they changed it at the recent update of laptop-mode-tools.
Regarding your heat problem; is there any other thing you use to cut down power usage (from AUR maybe)? I use acpi_call from AUR had to edit lines there aswell, but it should be updated by now. -
Photoshop CS6 Patch Tool doesn't work correctly

Need help with Patch Tool in CS5
I am having a problem using the patch tool in Photoshop CS5. I click on the Patch Tool and select the Source option from the upper tool bar. Then I circle a gray area in the background of my photo and, holding down the left mouse button, I drag the selection to a black area in the background and release the mouse button. Instead of turning the selected area black it just makes the area slightly darker than it was originally. I just don’t understand why I can’t use the patch tool and any help would be appreciated.
Thank you very much for these suggestions. Robert

Contents copied with "patch tool" disappear
I am having trouble with the "patch tool" . . .
Whether I use it in "Normal" or "Content Aware" mode, the patches that are made disappear after I make the patch.
For example, I am copying a portion of a uniform that has lines. I want to copy the lines to another part of the uniform to make it appear as one.
I use the "patch" tool to draw around the area. I then move the stylus pen over the area I wish to copy, and the preview within the circle shows the "addition" to look fine.
But as soon as I release the "patch" tool, Photoshop "thinks" for a few seconds (as signified by a "spinning wheel"-type cursor) . . . then it stops "thinking," and the contents of the patch area disappear. Although they were there as a preview, they disappear when I release the "patch" tool after completing the copy.
What am I doing wrong? TIA for any help . . .Thanks, Brian . . .
I had already watched this video (and I agree it is a good tutorial) . . .
The problem is I am looking for a "troubleshooter" answer, for when the tool does not work, and this video does not address that . . .
I have found a number of tutorials on how to use the video, but they are all based on the assumption that it works (which I am assuming it usually does) . . .
I am looking for a clue as to why it doesn't work but can't find anything . . . thanks for your help, though . . . -
Hi,
I am using the patch tool to patch (!) areas of an image. Instead of patching the selection into the image, PS4 blends it, so that some of the patch and some of the original image are visible. I've searched for a way to instruct PS4 to reduce the opacity but I can't find such an option. Is it possible to truly 'patch' and not 'blend' an area of an image?
Thanks for you help!Sorry...I only come here when having problems. I read more than post. ...most problems have already been resolved before I get here.
No so this one.
I just this moment went back to my old workstation.
ABIT IS7 Windows XP SP3 RADEON 9600 graphigs Card
ADOBE CS3 10.0.1
The Patch Tool blends perfectly...
On this workstation.. my New one.
ASUS P5B Deluxe with E6600 & 8gig Ram RADEON HD 3870 X2
Windows Ultimate SPK2 64bit
I have both CS3 10.0.1 & CS4 11.0.1 installed
Both exibit a failure to blend properly ...as priviously mentioned in this thread.
Again...I am back to my original thinking that it is a Hardware Related issue..and needs exploring
In my humble opinion, It would be good to poll those having issues and see.
MB processor OS & ver Graphics Adaptor and drivers & Photoshop ver

Patch tool just blends, doesn't replace
I've seen tutorials about the patch tool, but my patch tool doesn't appear to do what the tutorials do...
I've read other threads about how this tool is supposed to blend near the edges to give a good result, but this is blending the whole thing. I've already deleted my prefs file by starting photoshop with ctrl alt shift pressed. I've also reset the tool. These screenshots were taken immediately after opening photoshop cs4 and deleting the prefs file. Can anyone tell me what to do to use the patch tool like it's shown? I'm not as interested in alternate methods to achieve the same result -- I've already used the clone stamp tool to do the job. But why doesn't my patch tool seem to work the way it should?Curt Y - there are two options for the patch tool 'source' and 'destination'. You seem to be confused
Bruderbell, the patch tool works this way - it analyses areas OUTSIDE the selected area to make its decisions as to what to use to replace texture and color. Because your area it on the edge of the canvas, the only pixel data it has are your dark pixels. Its working correctly
To sort out your problem, start with the Clone Tool, make a loose clone over of the dark area. Then use the healing brush or the patch tool to make the transitions smoother, and eiliminate any tonal errors. With a little practice you will be able to achieve a perfect heal this way -
Screen goes blank when using Patch tool
The only information I've been able to find on this issue thus far was a post that was written during the Photoshop CS6 beta period at http://forums.adobe.com/message/4285375
I am using the final released Photoshop CS6 software, not beta, and am having the same issue with the Patch tool. I start to drag around an area to make a selecton, and the screen goes blank so that I can't see where I'm making the selection. When I release the mouse, the image appears again. Another problem which may be related is that sometimes when I zoom in, the screen goes blank. Closing Photoshop and re-launching it usually fixes the problem, but is an annoying time-waster. I have the most current update from the Cloud for Photoshop CS6, 13.1.2.X64.
Does anyone know a fix for this?RAM is 12 GB. I'm not sure which numbers are relevant for VRAM and scratch drive, but this is what I found for video card properties:
Total Available Graphics Memory: 2809 MB
Dedicated Video memory: 1024 MB
System Video Memory: 0 MB
Shard System Memory: 1785 MB -
Patch tool is constained on straight lines
both my patch tool and lasso constrain to straight lines even though i am drawing freehand shapes. anyone know how to reverse this?
The problem was Google Chrome browser! As soon as I quit Chrome my pen tool started working again. I didn't even need to restart Fireworks. I wonder if it is a conflict with one of my plugins/add ons. Most likely.
UPDATE - I did narrow it down to one specific Google Chrome extension. It was "Google Play Music" -
Spot and Patch tool with grain picture
I have a big problem, most of my picture are with a lot of grain, i used to shot with really high iso.
When i try to use the patch tool, it seem that it work fine only with no grain picture, i tried to move all the slide, but i'm not able to have a really good work, for most of the picture i have to use photoshop to remove all the spot.
Now i found that retouch tool are a lot better then patch, anyone have some idea that can help me? I am trying to use aperture as the only program to work on my picture.
Thanks a lot.
Bressanello DavideI think if there's a lot of grain you'd have better luck with the clone part of the tool, as it should clone the grain as well. The trick is whether you have anywhere in the photo you can really clone from.

Patch Tool option bar - missing word "Mode"
The new Content Aware Move tool has the word Mode next to its drop down box on the options bar. The Patch tool has the word Patch next to its drop down. For consistency the word Patch on the patch tool options bar should be replaced with Mode. Ideally instead of Mode, they both could display the name of the tool, but I expect Content Aware Move takes up too much real estate.
"flying blind."
"You totally lost me there, and I have no clue as to what your last question means."
"I think I now know what you mean."
Evidently language is of difficulty for you.
Perhaps the Oxford dictionary can provide you with your much needed “sensible, meaningful” content.
According to the Oxford dictionary, a dialogue is to "Take part in a conversation or discussion to resolve a problem." It also states that a dialogue is "A discussion between two or more people or groups, especially one directed toward exploration of a particular subject or resolution of a problem.”
That IS the inherent nature of posts. A conversation is reciprocation. Questions, followed by more questions.
It is not difficult to understand.
"how to ask your questions correctly for quicker and better answers" is best actualized by simply asking.
Is it a Mac; is it not, etc.
That IS sufficient. That IS "quicker and better answers[ing]." That IS what a dialogue IS. And that IS actually what is "sensible," "meaningful," and "detailed."
The Oxford dictionary can best delineate and elucidate your lack of comprehension in what ACTUALLY “meaning” is.
As well as what is "sensible" AND "detailed."
By the way, am I being repetitive.
Still confused. Let the experts that do not require much explanation respond with "quicker and better answers" for both "sensible, complete" responses." They are not "lost," "blind," or provide "incomplete" drivel. -
Couldn't find any reference to this elsewhere in the forums.
Since getting CS6 I have been puzzled to find that the patch tool in CS6 seemed not to work across layers whilst doing photo retouching. So I reverted to the other tools to get some work done and ignored the problem.
I have just discovered that the problem seems to be caused by the source layer being locked (as in the background layer). In this case, with an empty layer above selected and the patch tool using all layers, the tool looks as though it is working until the mouse is released, when the original content of the patch re-appears and the empty layer is still empty.
Only if the base layer is unlocked will the patch tool work as expected to put the correction onto on the empty layer above.the unlocked base.
Is this just on my Win7 x64 system, or is this a feaure/bug in CS6?"patch tool using all layers"
What is the real name of the tool that you've repeatedly refered to as "patch tool"? I ask because it can't be Patch Tool if there's an option to use all layers. -
Patch tool leaving border.
Seems when I select something that should be easy enough to fix, meaning not by any edges and like a spec on the sky, that the patch tool would blend it nicely, but it's leavin an edge pattern for me.
I reset the tool, made sure it's on source as well. Everytime I patch tool something, I get a weird kind of border around the area I healed. The inside looks fine and is nicely done, but the pattern left kind of makes it pointless.
Wondering if anyone else had this problem? I thought resetting the tool would work, but it still does it.Your example isn't very good because you didn't use a background containing gradient and/or structures. Actually, you created a situation in which the patch tool does an excellent job.
What you probably are referring to is a "smudged" edge around your patch. This is just the way the patch tool works, it tries to blend in the edges and in doing so often blurs the edges. I don't know what kind of image you're working on, but try to use the clone and heal tools as much as you can (set those to rather "hard" too, or you'll notice them having the same fuzzy look at the edges like the patch tool. -
In the past, I've successfully used the Patch Tool by selecting "New Selection" , & "Source.
Next, I would make a selection of the area I wished to fill/repair; then Lt-Click/Drag the selection to an area of the image that I wished to use as a "fill, and when It looked OK, release the Lt Click button, and the "original" selection area would "fill" with the area I had dragged to.
With CS5, I do the same thing, but when I release the Mouse button, the dragged selection disappears, as it should, but the "original" selection area does not fill. It remains selected, but is unchanged as to content, as if the final fill execution has failed.
I'm probably doing something wrong, but it's escaping me?
LeighSomething must have changed.....
I've had the same problem for nearly a year and haven't found a solution.
Just to reiterate:
On a single layer, whether backgroung, duplicate of background or another, and trying to patch an area ON THAT LAYER,
with Source checked, and Transparent NOT checked, what happens when I move the patch is this....
the selected area changes to match the underlying pixels until I release the mouse. On release, the patched area becomes a blend of the original selection and the area I wanted to use as a patch.
It is also apparent that the edges are feathered.
In short, it doesn't work well.
I've searched the Adobe help site (forums, etc.) and Google, and found many descriptions of trouble with the Patch Tool, but no real solutions.
I have continuously updated (12.0.4 x64) and deleted my Preferences, and reset all the tools. To no avail.
The Patch Tool was very useful once. But it's not working now. Not for me on my iBook.
If anyone has a definite fix, or any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them!
Thanks,
Carl
