Pathfinder selection wierdness

Say you made a "ring" by drawing 2 circles and using Pathfinder's Minus Front option and you don't Expand it.
Now, if you click anywhere in the "hole"... then the Compound Shape gets selected.
....umm. Why?
There's nothing there. Why is it selectable?
If you use Minus Front on the same scenario and you do Expand it, then this problem doesn't happen.
I also used Exclude on 2 overlapping shapes. And wouldn't you know, the "invisible" parts of the objects are still selectable.
Why? They should be out of sight, out of mind unless you pull out the Direct Selection Tool.
I'm having a lot of trouble working on my current project because of this.
I don't even get the thought behind why it works like this.
Could this be fixed?
There was a similar annoying problem in older versions where the "hidden" portions of objects in Clipping Masks were selectable.
That has since been fixed.
I wish unexpanded Compound Shapes would behave the same as Clipping Masks.
If there's nothing to see there, it should not be selectable.

If you've described it correctly, nothing.
However, I think you may have not described it exactly correct.
Are you indeed using the Direct Slection tool? The White pointer? You should have no trouble moving each half with the Direct Selection Tool.
If you, in fact, are using the Selection tool (Black Pointer), or the Group Selection tool (White pointer with a +) then you will move both parts.
You can always select both parts and choose Object > Ungroup from the menu.

Combining closed paths in Illustrator CS3

Dunno how simple this one is, but I have two closed paths of the same colour that overlap to appear as one object when printed. I'm trying to combine these two paths into one object so that if I apply a stroke weight to it, it outlines the whole object, instead of individually. Is there a simple way of doing this or do I have to add points manually?
Keep in mind I'm not asking about a compound path.

You use the pathfinder selecting both objects and clicking on the first icon at the top left if you wish you can keep this alive or you can expand it. In either case you can now apply a stroke to the new shape.
Ore you can select both and then click on the live paint bucket and turn it into a live paint group and choose the option to paint both fills and strokes. and paint away.

Select-option of a variable is acting wierd in web report

Hi,
I am getting the following error in web report when I click a select option button of variable. Has any of you come across this situation ?

We are on BI 7.0.
The ABAP code in the above mentioned Class & method are in sync with a relevant OSS note 671405.
This is kind of wierd to me as it doesn't give any error when I run the same report in our QA Portal, It is happening only in our BW Production system.

The OSS note you specified is for 3.x and you mentioned you are on nw2004s.
Whats the Support pack you on currently.
I saw couple oss for SP-8 and 9 for the error you mentioned howver ,I presume you should be minimum on SP-10 ,so those may not help.

PS- As a part of sanity check if your QA and PROD are on same support pack.

The problem is that it isn't a vector path in it's own right. Is there a way to get Illustrator to recognize the offset stroke as it's own vector path?
Please forgive me if my terminology is off as I'm not a formally trained graphic artist.

865p wierd cpu ratio select problem

I just got a new p4 3ghz 800mhz fsb cpu and an 865p neo motherboard. When I boot. It gives and error saying it thinks that the bios is configured correctly. For the CPU it says " , 1.6ghz " When I enter setup. In the menu option for setting CPU ratio I get wierd selection. (yes it is an unlocked part. (I work at Intel)
It starts at H1.0X whatever that is supposed to mean. My choices are
0.0x, H1.0x, H2.0x ... I1.0x, I2.0x, ... I5.0x
No matter what I choose when I save and exit it just leaves me with a blank screen then shuts itself off. It keeps doing that until I reset the bios then I'm back to where I began.
If I say skip and go to the boot menu I works until I have to reboot again. I managed to intall the operating system, etc so I could get internet working and use the live update thing. It says my bios and inf are current.

Can't merge 3 selected paths in pathfinder with Illustrator CS4 Mac OSX

I have 3 stroked circles that I would like to merge with pathfinder. Illustrator makes the images dissappear instead of merging them. Is this a bug? Is there a workaround?

Wierd QuickTimePro 7.03 Player Selection Start and Selection End markers?

In previous QTPro versions
finding,moving, setting in/out markers worked independently of the play-point marker.
You could move a marker, then move the play-point to the marker do a runthru, make small adjustments with the arrow keys and trim the selection...but...
Now...
-start/end markers aren't always visible
-the markers stick with the play-point marker
-if you move a marker the play-point marker moves
-if you move the play-point the start/end markers move
-it is much more difficult to set-up in/out points to set up a trim

-is there a new control I'm missing?
-is there some other secret here?

Use the letters i and o keys to set in and out points based on the position of the cursor in the timeline.
To "fine tune" your selection hold the "Shift" key down as you use the arrow keys to "step through".
To test your selection use the "Play Selection Only" (Command-T) from the View menu.

Items are executing upon being selected. Wierd.

Lately one of my Macs running 10.3.9 has started acting strangely: for example, when I go to the apple menu and start running the mouse down the menu, it is not possible to get all the way to the last item in the menu - the menu will disappear as I get part way down the menu, and some function in the menu will launch itself.
Or, if I try to drag an executable file out of a folder into another folder, it drags as far as the desktop, and then launches itself. It can't just be dragged from one folder to another. If I quit the program, it can then be dragged from the desktop into the destination folder, whereupon it launches itself again.
The Mac acts as tho some accellerator key somewhere is stuck, or some accessibility setting is stuck in the wrong position....but I've looked all thru the mouse control panel. my logitech configuration panel, and the Universal Access settings, and am not seeing anything that resolves the problem.
I am currently doing a MacScan, which will take all night, in the unlikely event that it detects some bizarre malware item on the computer....which is highly unlikely. After that, I'll try a different mouse. I've not seen such an issue reported in the forums before. It could also be a corrupted preference file, if I knew which ones to delete (i believe they regenerate themselves back to defaults).
Just posting this in case it jogs someone's mind with a possible solution...i'd hate to have to reinstall the entire system just to fix this oddball behavior.

It turned out to be a flaky mouse button. The microswitch for the left mouse button was not making reliable contact; when i held the button down, it was sending erratic signals to the CPU which the CPU was interpreting as double clicks, causing executables to run. New Mouse fixed the problem.

I don't think Finder does this (I've tried).
iTunes does though. Where you can set artwork or the "poster frame"...
This may not be what you want but if it helps, I know 2 ways do this is
Open the video in QuicktimePlayer7 | View | Set Poster Frame (even then, you might need to save it as .mov (ie in a 'mov container').
Drag the file into iTunes and set the artwork (as in http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/adding-album-cover-art-or-images-in-itunes .html)
From there, iTunes will use that frame as the "poster frame" ie the photo/frame that shows when you browse your videos. Which is what you want, but limited to iTunes.
When I do either of these above, the frame I set does not show when exploring files in "Finder" (or in the other Explorer tool I use called "Pathfinder").
So it maybe, that exactly what you want, is not possible.

LOV single selection list is not working in my JDeveloper 10.1.2.3

I'm stumped with this. I'm also new to JDeveloper. I used the sample tutorial from the OTN website entitled "JSPDataBoundLists.jws" to learn how to create drop-down lists in JDeveloper.
My problem is I created a single selection list LOV from DepartmentListView Data Control and pasted it into an EmployeesView Input form. This is so I can just select the Department names to populate the DepartmentID field in Employees table. I setup the data binding in the UI Model of my jsp using the "List Binding Editor". I checked the UIModel file and it looks as follows:

I run the jsp, selected a value from the drop-down list, do a submit and do a commit, but the DepartmentId from the DepartmentsListView was not stored in Employees. What is wierd here is that there is an exact same single selection list defined a row above mine which is working fine. How come that one is working and mine is not?

Eureka! I finally found the answer to my own question!
This simple problem of adding a drop-down list into a jsp page cost me 3 whole days (around 24 full working hours) to find the answer. Normally it only takes me a few minutes with the other web app languages I've learned. And I just stumbled into the answer just a few minutes ago (maybe all thanks should be given to God whom let me stumble into the answer since me and my wife have been praying for several weeks now ever since I started trying to learn Oracle JDeveloper. It is really very very difficult and time consuming to learn compared to other web app languages and tools).
Anyway, the reason why my LOV does not work in my jsps using JDeveloper 10.1.2.3 is because JDeveloper 10.1.2.3 seems to allow only one input-form-element for the same field of the input table!
For example, what happened to me was I had an input form created for the Employees table in the HR schema. I did this simply by drag-and-drop from the "Data Control Palette". This feature I like very much with JDeveloper. It is really easy and works instantly. And then, I drag-and-drop the departmentname field from the Departments table as a "single selection list" into the jsp and setup its bindings. So when I run the jsp, viola! The drop-down list does not populate the DepartmentId field of the Employees table. IT DOES NOT WORK! I've tried reinstalling both JDev and Oracle db and JDKs to no avail! I tried posting in this forum to no avail! I tried experimenting with newly created jsps to no avail! Then suddenly after repeatedly experimenting on this on different tutorials, guides and my own web app, it works! Why did it work? It was because I tried to add an LOV-single-selection-list on another sample tutorial with a READ-ONLY FORM on the jsp! Thus only the LOV is the input-form-element in the jsp for the table's field.
So why can't you find such a simple and basic fact anywhere in the web, the tutorials, guides or the forum? I do not know. Maybe only I am using such an old version of JDev? But what about the users who used it when it just got out a couple of years ago? Didn't they have the same problem? Anyway, it seems like the answer to a lot of my simple basic questions about JDeveloper is not documented, or is buried very deep beneath all the other words of all these documents. Hopefully JDeveloper's documentations would get a lot easier to use very very soon!

Aspect ratio not working properly, and also, my final dvd has wierd ghosting

I just can't seem to make a project work with encore. It's very touchy it seems. I have several videos that I tried to put together in a dvd, but I was having problems with the aspect ratio. Even when I used "Interpret Footage", the videos would incorrectly scale, most of the time to 4:3. At first they would look fine, but after transcoding, they would distort and sometimes be cropped on the 16:9 timeline I was using, or sometimes they would pop to 4:3 with black bars on the side.
It seems Encore NEVER gets what kind of video I'm using, even when I manually set the PAR in the Interpret Footage dialog.
So my solution was to bring everything into After Effects, render it back out as uncompressed AVI and use encore to make a dvd image which I then burned. My settings for this movie were 720x480 with a 1.2 PAR. The wierd thing is, I rendered two movies out in this way, Encore understood that one of them should be widescreen, but not the other. What gives?
I still had to do some tricks in Encore to get it to understand that these should be widescreen movies, and when I finally got them transcoded and looking right in my 16:9 timeline, I made an image. Then I burned it. Then I looked at it on a tv and I swear, every piece of text and or image had haloing on it.
Can someone tell me if this is a problem in my workflow? Encore is so confusing, I just want to know what the best method to making a simple dvd is. I don't want menus or any of that, just a dvd that loops. I can make one, but the quailty sucks. can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

I think I'm onto something. I exported form After Effects as an Mpeg2-DVD so I end up with
*.m2v files.
I had set those in AE to be 16:9 aspect and when I imported them into Encore they popped right into my 16:9 timeline with no problems. and the final build went way easier too, way faster.
Then I looked at my dvd on the tv and it still didn't look so great. But when I compared it with similar dvds that others had done, theirs had jagged edges on text as well and I thought, is this because I'm using Standard Definition?
I'm very new to this, so maybe I'm expecting too much. My images on the dvd play back fine on the TV, but the text doesn't look great.
Also, maybe I'm not sure how best to set up my video. When I play my movie back on the TV (A Samsung) and I select the pictures size of 4:3, my video is centered with black all around, but it's 16:9. I have to hit P Size two more times taking the TV first to 'widescreen' (which makes my image look stretched), then to zoom which makes my image fill the TV screen. I think some of my quality issues have to do with this scaling. Is there a way to make my dvd fit the full screen on 4:3 aspect on the TV?

Create a new object that surrounds the selected objects

Is there anyway in illustrator to create a new vector object from selected objects?
IE if i have three rectangles selected, can I make a new vector path that surrounds them all.
I dont mean welding a group of vectors together or offsetting a path...which isnt exactly what i need.
What Im needing to do is create cut lines around complex vector art quickly.

Mike i need to make an outline around a logo but if the logo has many elements that make up the edge of the logo does that method work?
As the cut line needs to be a closed path
Ideally i want to avoid tracing around the logo with the pen tool or add to shape area in pathfinder tab.

Using Text as a Selection so I can select and delete to create a transparency.

I am trying to create a very simple logo. Basically, I created two layers: one with the letter M and the other with the letter W. I now want to place another letter over top of them and then select it so I can delete the shape of the third letter from the other two and essentially be able to see the transparent background through the third letter.
I have done this in PS CS2 no problem, but I am trying to do it in illustrator so I can resize the design for anything from a business card to a billboard if needed. Bottom line is I need a solution that wont effect me being able to resize the vecotr to crazy sizes.
In the image below, the "S" is just a white letter. I need it to be a cut out through the M and W so that whatever Background it is on the page or document shows tthrough that S space.

If you wish to keep the letters as live Type, you may simply select all and in the Transparency palette flyout click Make Opacity Mask, ticing/unticking Clip and Invert depending on the actual colour of the top letter (S here), which should be black or white, so you get it to cut out (no Clip and no Invert for black, no Clip and Invert for white).
With outlined Type you can also use Pathfinder>Minus Front.

How to prevent user from selecting a specific printer?

I have a MailFolder which has an ArrayList of Email objects inside it. Each MailFolder has an attribute called folderFile which is a reference to a folder in the operating system. Each Email has an attribute called parentFile which is a reference to a file in the operating system.
Now, I am trying to put printing into my application.
When I print using a normal printer like my HP Deskjet or the likes - an actual physical printer - everything works fine. But when I print using the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer, things go wierd. The following things happen;
I call myMailFolder.getFolderFile().exists() and this = false. But if I (in the debugger) make a new file pointing to the same path, .exists() = true. Also if I look in the OS, the file exists. So somehow in the job.print() this Document Image writer seems to be messing up this file reference. The same thing happens to the myEmail.getParentFile().
So to fix this, can anyone tell me how to prevent the user from selecting this printer, or can anyone tell me why this is happening only with the Document Image Writer?

I have similar problem with our printing program. I am printing Java Tables, zoom in every column in a landscape page accross multiple pages.
There are two fatal problems:
1. On Dell Latitude laptop, the HP5100 printer didn't work; I have to change the code to draw the table header with 2D graphics.
2. Crash when printing on MS document image writer, but on some computers
it works perfectly.
Any one have a good solution/same result for topic 2?
