Paul's Advice to Newbies, #1

It's easy to run a quick test using a short class file and a main() method, like this:
public class test {
  public static void main(String[] argv) {
    // put your test code in this method
    System.out.println("get output like this");
    // get arguments like this:
    if (argv.length > 0) {
      String firstArgument = argv[0];
      System.out.println("the first argument was: " + firstArgument);
}And compile and run it from the command line.
You can figure out some of your questions about java almost immediately with simple tests like this. For example:
public class test {
  public static void main(String[] argv) {
    // can I compare two instances of Double, initialized with the same
    // double primitive value, with "=="?
    Double double1 = new Double(5.62);
    Double double2 = new Double(5.62);
    if (double1 == double2)
      System.out.println("Two Double instances can be compared meaningfully with ==");
    else
      System.out.println("Two Double instances can NOT be compared meaningfully with ==");
}Compile and run:
javac test.java
java testand you'll see how == works with Double objects (it doesn't check for mathematical equivalency).

I tried your example but I get NoClassDefFoundError and also my computers beeping at me in a funny way. Heeellllpppp mmmeeeeee!!!!

  • HELP ME GUYS WITH CREDIT ADVICE FOR NEWBIE

    Thanks for reading!  I just want to ask you guys, I'm looking to help my girlfriend open her first credit card.  I have plenty with all of the creditors and I began with Capital One.  I believe at that time I had my student loan reporting though.  She has nothing on her report aside from a few inquiries (AT&T and a few store card HPs).  She said some of her friends have been approved for a low CL Discover It card.  I don't know if there is a Discover It offering for newbies or if they must just have something on their report.  I recommended she get a Cap1 card.  That way she can have her son on the card image and I know that since I've heard they triple pull they're pretty leanient.  What do you guys think?  Any advice on what secured card she should get should it come to that?  Thanks very much again!

    HappyCamper123 wrote:
    Do NOT cosign for your girlfriend. If you break up, your finances could get messy.
    Have her apply for an It card, they love clean, thin files. If that fails, go for a secured Boa card or Cap One credit steps. Maybe make her an AU on an Amex of yours to build history (you can artificially set a limit to limit your liability).Amex is the one I called first about AU and then Citi.  I almost did it with Citi because surprisingly the rep for Amex wasn't very helpful.  Should I (she) even be concerned with inquiries when she literally has no score anyway?  Do they really impact a score that doesn't exist or do they hurt a score once one becomes available.  The whole thing is I was just concerned that we'd apply for stuff and she woulnd't get approved and that she'd have another senseless inquiry.  As I said, she already has several.

  • Advice for newbie

    Hi
    This is my first post and hope that somebody has the patience to give some advice to a newcomer.
    I 'discovered' programming via the familiar (?) route of Excel to VBA and got hooked on programming and what it can do. I did some reading and it semed clear that Java was / is a major player for the future. So I got out 'teach yourself Java in 21 days' (!) and got really interested in Java.
    I am considering doing a Java Ceritification as a focus to my learning. Can anybody give advice on that e.g. time / difficulty / usefullness. I was hoping to move towards mobile developing.
    Also, is there a software package that serves as a Java developing environment?I am used to typing code in NotePad and then compiling via MS-DOS...
    I'd truly appreicate anything that can get me headed in the right direction.
    Regards
    Alex Park

    Going from Excel to VBA to Java sounds so familiar to me! Granted, a long time ago, but familiar nontheless. If I may offer a few words of encouragement: don't despair, at least this developer proceeded along the same route. :^)
    That having been said, I have never been Java certified. I know people who are, and even some who try to get as many certifications as possible. However, in actual job interviews, the subject has never come up. I imagine that two candidates who are equal in nearly every respect except certification would result in the certified candidate being hired. However, this IMO is a rare case.
    To start with Java, my advice would be to pick-up an introductory Java book. Read through it, and familiarize yourself with the core features of the language (branching, iteration, assignment, etc.) Then, you can start learning some of the packages that you will use most often, including java.util, java.io, java.net and java.text.
    Once you get to this point, I think the best thing to do is learn by doing. Pick a small project that interests you personally. When I started out, I wanted to write something simple to calculate my take-home pay and make out a small budget. (Granted, this may be as interesting as watching paint dry for you, but pick something you like).
    At some point, you will have the confidence to either start writing your own software or apply for employment with a company.

  • Some advice for newbie backup-ers?

    Hello, I've just come across a few dollars to spend on a drive to backup my macbook pro. I am fairly new at this so would appreciate some advice.
    I considered the 1T Time Capsule but looked at some reviews and too many people would not reccommend due to it failing after a year. Plus I think I could probably get a better Seagate drive for less money.
    First question, can I still use time machine with a Seagate external hard drive? Or could I somehow use migration assistant with it - to save my hard drive as is on my external?
    I've also read a little about cloning and downloaded carbon copy cloner to do this but am not sure how it works. Would I just save a clone on my external and then copy it over to my mac in the event I lost my data? Does this take a lot of time? Would that be quicker than time capsule?
    Ohh so many questions I know. Its just all so overwhelming and I want to make the right choice. Basically Im after non-complicated, easy, one-click approaches to backing up - similar to how easy migration assistant is. But it would also be good to have the option of manually transporting important documents like assignments to a backup drive. Thanks for reading!

    those early problems haven been ironed out. the newer models are quite reliable.
    Plus I think I could probably get a better Seagate drive for less money.
    consider a [refurbished|http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC343LL/A?mco=MTY5MTQ5Njc] unit.
    First question, can I still use time machine with a Seagate external hard drive?
    yes, if the drive is properly formatted. check out [this_|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/2.html] user tip.
    Or could I somehow use migration assistant with it
    MA is for migrating data from one Mac to another.
    I've also read a little about cloning and downloaded carbon copy cloner to do this but am not sure how it works. Would I just save a clone on my external and then copy it over to my mac in the event I lost my data?
    you would clone your cloned system from the external back to your internal HD, yes.
    Does this take a lot of time?
    depends on how much data you're cloning. via a firewire 800 connection, cloning 60 GB takes about an hour (YMMV).
    Would that be quicker than time capsule?
    again, depends on how much data to backup. if you're using an ethernet connection instead of wireless, it will be faster. the initial backup will take rather long, but subsequent backups are incremental and take much less time.
    you might find the following enlightening: [_*Time Machine vs. Clones and Archives*|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/Clones.html]
    Basically Im after non-complicated, easy, one-click approaches to backing up
    IMHO, that would be time machine.

  • Advice to newbie before job interview

    Thanks in advance.Well, you didn't tell us forwhich position and track you are going for? If its developer than probably little knowledge of SQL will be a big show stopper. You need to have good knowledge of SQL and PL/SQL atleast in addition to other technologies like XML, Java and so on.
    If you are going for DBA interview, than knowing about Oracle concepts, how it works, key components , administration tasks, this all is a must. Besides that, it will be an addon if you know about operating systems.
    The adivce is that person should be preparing himself well before attempting an interview. With little knowledge, it may be tough to clear the interview.
    For the learning, Oracle concepts would be the starting point,followed by sql, pl/sql, administration, backup/recovery andperformance tuning. For this, oracle docs is a good starting point.

  • SAP Career Advice for newbie

    I've been working for this a company a year now and feel stuck. Started as functional in HR module - did this for about 6 months and learned how to write functional specs. This position ended. Was retrained in ABAP for two months. Now moving into a technofuctional support role in SD module. My problem is that I'm having a hard time getting noticed and no work is being given to me. My manager seems confused as to what my actual role/activities/tasks should be.
    For those with experience or maybe have dealt with this previously. What are some things that I should do to get work, get noticed, and learn on grow at this position? Should I ask for work? Should I ask to shadow? I need some direction. Your advice is greatly apprieciated.

    If I were you, I would spend all your free time here on SDN. There are so many rescources you can explore... If you couldn´t spare a minute because of tons of work to do, you would get stuck as well. At the moment you may have the same problem as me - I am too young for a responsibility. Use this time carefully and increase your value for your employer. And think about it this way: You pay me, don´t give me work and I increase my value, but probably... you won´t ever venefit from my increased value:)) Prepare your career for a new employer. Decide what career you want to pursue, work hard and next change the job.

  • Learning Shake. Video tutorial advice from a new user...

    I am brand new to Shake and compositing. I've used Final Cut Pro for a few years and done simple compositing after doing FCP tutorials. Shake is tougher to learn thank FCP, so I've purchased some videos from Gnomon workshop and cmiVFX. I wouldn't consider this a formal review, but some beginning advice for newbies like me...
    1. First, do the tutorials in the manual that come with Shake. They start off simple, and one could probably learn almost everything you need for general use of Shake (from a newbie, don't forget).
    2. This excellent book... Apple Pro Training Series : Shake 4 (2nd Edition) (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0321256093/103-0705051-1275827?colid=1T8L28XGM0 5IS&coliid=I3MUD718LP9EP9&n=283155) will get you started as well. It comes with a DVD full of material to work with as well. Good money invested here.
    When you're ready to start spending more money....
    3. cmiVFX.com has a number of free tutorials http://www.cmivfx.com/tutorials.asp, some of them for Shake, some for other compositing programs. Check them out for inspiration and for technique examples. I purchased the Shake Training Series 1 Kit (http://www.cmivfx.com/productshakekit.asp) which was quite good. They lead you through a series of examples, showing how some of the major functions operate and how to start working with all those nodes. I had previously purchased Combustion 4, and cmiVFX's video for Sky Replacement for combustion was excellent. They also make one for Shake, and I wish I would have purchase that one instead, although I've never seen it. The downside on this video series is that it runs as a regular DVD, and you need DVD Player, or a typical DVD player to view them. So, these are low-res videos (TV resolution), and not Quicktime files on disc.
    4. The Gnomon Workshop (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/index.html) has some excellent video tutorials. They're pretty technical, and not a good place to start unless you've got a background in visual effects or other compositing software. I think they're great, but I think the new user of Shake/compositing software should work on numbers 1-3 above. Don't get me wrong, this is a great resource, which would be in keeping with the image Gnomon Workshop gives of being an in-depth resource for serious computer graphics artists. I suspect the level of teaching in these videos would satisfy the higher level and more advanced users. These videos are Quicktime format, high resolution and very well done. Visual Effects Compositing Fundamentals (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/gja01.html) is US$49 for 4 hours of instruction. Great value for money. I've also found Shake: Color Correction and Layers US$59 (3 hours) (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/mli02.html) very good, as was Shake: Effective Keying Techniques US$59 (3 hours) (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/mli03.html).
    Personally, I'd like to see some more video tutorials of some experienced users showing how they get things done. Maybe now's the time???

  • Advice with cross-continent file sharing in DW

    I am helping a friend in a different continent to me using email.
    My friend has an established web site and I agreed to take one page and convert it from table-based layout to CSS.
    So, I get his code off the web + images and build the page.  It looks fine on my test site and of course in my DW on my desk top.  Code all validates and it looks how I want it.  It's not a complicated page and I'm confident in the code but my friend hates code.  I'm not even allowed to say the word!
    So, I email accross the world my files wich includes two sample .html files and a folder of images.  My friend puts said files in to his site to test on DW and the layout is screwed.  Although I plan on WWW domination, omnipresence is something I have yet to learn and consequently we are struggling to overcome this barrier which must have a simple solution.  He's on DW 8 and I am on DW 10 - I've never really used earlier versions. [edit] I'm on a PC he's on a Mac.
    Please help us both to work out how to achieve this level of collaboration.  Please don't say anything that might make me look dumber than I am in front of my friend if at all possible   I know that's a tough one.  I'll send him a link for this thread so hopefully, we'll get it fixed.
    It's fair to say that my friend will not want to fiddle with his existing site.  We just need to work on this one page - I don't think either of us is planning on marriage or anything and once this is done, my friend just needs to be able to be able to edit that one page and I will need to move on to my next victim buddy.
    I think that the problem must have something to do with our different file structures so just to make it clear, what I am sending is a folder containing two .html files and another folder called images with the images in it.  That's it.
    Can you please tell me what I need to send by email and my friend what to do when he gets it.
    Thanks for your help

    Hello Paula, Anyone-Who's-Listening!
    Sorry to come back with this.
    I have been back in touch with my friend and reiterated Paula's advice in the last post and we still have problems.  This is how I tried to explain to him what to do and I also included a screenshot of my Files panel to show the folder in my test site.
    "Site Folder is the folder on your own computer where your site is located.
    In the File Panel in DW this is my "site folder," on my local machine.  [inserted screenshot here]
    Si it's on my C: Drive in a folder called "Martcol" which is a sub-folder of "htdocs" which is a sub-folder of "xampp."
    So "Martcol" is my site-root folder as far as Dreamweaver is concerned.
    What Paula advised ws to use Finder to drop my folder into your site-root folder before you open DW.  I would also advise that you delete everything you have from me except the latest .zip and use that folder."
    I did for myself exactly what I advised;  i.e. deleted everything from my site.  used the .zip I had made earlier, dragged the folder into my "Martcol" folder and it all worked fine.
    From a screen-shot that I had the problem that my friend had looked a little like float-drop except content didn't drop - it rode up and sat up to the right of the page.  The only thing that I can think of is that somehow, my files might be linking to or linked to files from his site that I know nothing about.  Howevere, all my CSS is in the <head> and there ar no other scripts.
    Many thanks
    Martin

  • Newbie forms question

    Hi,
    I'm just experimenting with forms (in the development suite) and I have now created a data block with table data, got it running within a browser and was feeling quite pleased with myself.
    I have now tried to do a similar thing with a stored procedure and I get the error message FRM-10764 no argument of type table or refcursor.
    Now I've done some plsql so I know about ref cursors, I do not however know what a table object is, or more to the point how/why a pl/sql procedure would/could return a table object.
    Can anyone explain this concept of how a procudure returns a table object and why is it that forms will not let me just display a single string or numeric response from a procedure?
    thanks in advance,
    Paul.

    Ed,
    I am newbie myself on Oracle but I think I can help you on this one. Do the following:
    1) Create the buttonl;
    2) Assign a WHEN_BUTTON_PRESSED trigger to that button;
    3) Use the CALL_FORM built-in procedure to call the second form; (look for examples on the help / forms builder help topics, it's a pretty good source of code sample and examples)
    Hope it works out.

  • How to configure users for internal mail routing only in exchange 2013

    Hi Guys!
    I have a scenario here that i have three (3) group of users, one group is able to have an inbound and outbound mail, meaning they can send and recieved emails from internal and external.The second group of users should have inbound mail(local mail) only
    (cannot send and recieved mails from internet), and the third (3) user is they can recieved an outbound mail but they are not allowed to send mail directly to the client,(Ex.
    [email protected],[email protected],[email protected]) instead they will use the
    [email protected] as the reply to the client. Please let me know how to configure group user 2 and 3.
    Thank you.
    regards,
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
    Great advice from Maganti, just elaborating steps:
    Prevent Group 2 send e-mail to internet by transport rule:
    1. Login EAC with administrator, Mail Flow---> Rule, click “Create a new rule, then give a name “Group2 - No Internet Mail”.
    2. Conditions: select "From a member of a distribution list" & select group "Group2"
    3. Select another condition "Sent to users inside or outside the organization" & Select Outside.
    4. Actions: select "send bounce message to sender with enhanced status code" & write your custom message like “You are not authorized to send mails to internet”.
    Prevent Group 3 directly send e-mail to internet, however it can send message as group:
    We also can create a transport rule which is same with Group2, then open Active Directory Users and Computers to add send as permission with another group (contain same users as group3).
    Best Regards,

  • How to create a standard report that allows filtering?

    Hi Guys and Gals,
    Sometimes, the standard report is great because it gives the user the feeling of a grid. i.e. All of the values are editable on one page, kind of like a spreadsheet. That is sometimes very useful. But if there is a lot of data, a filtering mechanism is necessary.
    So will one of you Apex gurus please tell me how to create a standard report that also allows data filtering?
    Allowing the user to specify the number of rows displayed would be peachy-keen too.
    Thanks,
    Kim
    P.S. I'm running Apex 4.1 with Oracle 11g.

    Nothing about forms. Tabular Forms, Tabular Forms. Despite many enhancements over the last few versions, tabular forms still cause problems, especially for novices trying to go beyond their own competence and the built-in capabilities of wizard-generated tabular forms.
    More good advice: Re: Newbie question-how does the tabular form work?  How to populate prim key? and&mdash;if based on decent database design&mdash;out of the box you have a usable and robust application. Use an Interactive Report or a custom report template and add some CSS and you can get something a lot more powerful, flexible and better looking than any tabular form. Spend the time you haven't wasted on frustrated hacking of tabular forms adding more features and enhancements to your app.

  • Since Vista doesn't work correctly on XFI Pro Elite.. What other sound card solutions do wo

    I am not looking for a flame war - just to honestly get some advice from others on what other solid sound cards do you know that work properly when hooking up optical inputs and such and have a wide selection of inputs like the creative xfi elite pro's breakout box. M

    Ok an update. I am very persistant - was up to 4am trying to fix this and trying to go through every possible problem. That right there shows there is some serious problems with creative's software and drivers. It is suppose to be easy, not require someone who has a master's degree in computer science 2 hours to sort through the problems. It would help if there was just a clear install guide telling exactly what needs to be done - or better yet - gasp - an installer than actually did all the complicated things for you. (Creative - see Installshield and an expert consultant - they can help you. It will be worth outsourcing your efforts to get a clean view on things. I suspect the people putting these driver packages at creatives have been there a while and have lost perspecti've). It is possible to get the soundcard working to a degree on Vista. Things to realize (the following works if an only if you only have one creative product installed. Otherwise it could screw up your system):?
    Make am imagine of your Windows before and after this. Before because its easy to screw things up. After because once you get it working you will never want to do it again.<
    Order or find on torrent the Official Vista Install CD [do not install it yet]. Download it. Its large - or order it and pay $9 for shipping and handling. (I think they are paying a courier to hand deli'ver it and also bring me coffee since it is so expensi've). You can not get this from creative's online site. (Imagine that).<
    You must uninstall manually everything that creative installs at all before going to next step.<
    You must uninstall everything that is nati've audio to your system (e.g. built on the motherboard).<
    There must not be other audio drivers or audio software installed.<
    After you uninstall all this - make sure you also uninstall creative's drivers, any other drivers of an audio nature, and make sure you check the box that says "delete drivers" when you uninstall.<
    REBOOT<
    Remove any other audio products from the system if possible. If built on a motherboard - see next step.<
    Go into the BIOS. Disable anything that is audio related. Save your settings.<
    REBOOT (again).<
    Go delete every registry setting that is in your registry hi've using regedit that is creative xfi related. (This can take some time because there are many sub devices, and not everything says "creative" on it.)? Good luck.<
    Delete everything in your program files under creative (remember to make sure you do this as an administrator with adminstrator permissions - thanks UAC).<
    Delete everything in users/[every user name here that runs on your system]/appdata/local/creative<
    Delete everything in users/[every user name here that runs on your system]/roaming/creative<
    [another words - delete everything you can find creative related to the xfi] - again be careful if you have more than one creative product - you could screw your system.<
    Install the Official Vista CD. Install ALL the software with ALL options. Click yes to a thousands OK yes I agree to install. Make sure you install this with administrati've privliedges.<
    REBOOT (again).<
    Register (why not - you did everything else)<
    Update all the software that it says to update. This will take?a long time because all of the software that is on the CD is out of date. <
    Alchemy will not update because you will have just updated a new set of drivers. So...<
    REBOOT (again).<
    Update all of software again that it says to update. (Creatives update manager works decently).<
    Alchemy will finish installing.<
    REBOOT (again).<
    Do not use control/panel/sound to adjust things - its useless<
    Make sure you use the Creative XFI Volume Panel (It is not the same as the Windows Volume). Great job naming this guys... Set what you want... the sound should be working.<
    NOTE:? SPDIF seems to be not available in Games (Sorry folks who run PS3 Optical through this device - your SOL - thanks Creative). To do this you must use it in Entertainment mode - but wait... SPDIF is disable by default. You must go to the mixer and enable it.<
    Now with this being said - many things still won't be functional. E.g. there is no dolby through SPDIF, etc. Many of the features that were sold with this card - simply are not available in the Vista drivers. Also note that to use the latest Alchemy that is on the web site (not through the updates) you have to hunt down and find beta drivers and install those - which automatically expire later on in the year. Good jobs guys with this too... not very smart creative.<
    SO there you have it. I am sure I may have missed a step - so if someone trys this and has a question - I will try to help. This is ridiculous though that someone has to go through this. A Windows service pack for the OS is easier than this. Creative get a clue - - fire some of your developers and get some that can do a decent job programming the drivers after 2 years of alpha's and betas and release - and create a decent install product. I shudder to think of the poor souls who bought more than one creative product. Good luck sorting through the directory, shared files, registry hi'ves, etc. to get your software working. If I hadn't paid a large some of money for this piece of hardware I would have never spent so much time on it. I figure even at $30 an hour - its about $400 in effort just to figure the above out, search through all the registry, hunt through the multiple directories of Vista, download the software, find out which software you have to download, etc. I am posting it here so that the average person who spent a couple hundred bucks on this card doesn't spend hundreds of dollars of time trying to get it to work on Vista.
    My advice for newbies to computers - go to best buy - spend $50 for install and tell them to get it all working perfectly in your PC. Best Buy is overpriced on everything now adays anyway... they wanted $40 for a hdmi to dvi converter when you can order one online for $5. They seem to be the 7- of Electronics.
    Please creative - clean up your act.

  • How to use carriage return in formcalc

    I'm sure the answer to this question is simple, but being new to formcalc (and scripting in general) I am having problems with it.
    The details:
    I have a dynamic form in livecycle. The two fields I am having problems with currently are a drop down list, and a text box (not field) associated with it. What is listed in the text box is dependant upon the choice from the dropdown list. So far everything is, functionally, working. I have the formcalc scripting event set to change on the dropdown list with the following script
    if (xfa.event.newText == "Office 1") then
         OfficeAddress1 = "123 Street Road #xD Town City, US 12121 #xD (111) 555-1414"
    endif
    "Office 1" being the dropdown selection
    OfficeAddress1 being the name of the text field
    The fake address being the address, seperated by carriage return symbols (#xD) to indicate where I want it to jump to the next line.
    The script is working fine except that the #xD symbols are showing up on the final form. How do I prevent this?
    Thanks for you assistance.

    Thanks Paul, good advice.
    For anyone that would want to do this in formcalc, the embarrassingly simple way of using a carriage return in the script is... hitting the enter button... no syntax required.
    Don't bother trying to line it up in the scripting screen (my mistake), that only puts more spaces than is necessary and will mess up the text orientation on the final form. Just hit enter and don't worry if it's not lined up, it will be.

    After taking Paul's advice, you might want to go to Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager, and open it up. Go to Sound, video and game controllers (might be called something similar in Vista). Look for your Realtek High Definition Audio and Dbl-click on it. Open up and check everything there.Make sure you have no errors.
    Next, go to Edit>Preferences>Audio Hardware and look at ASIO Settings. Check that your Realtek HD Audio output is checked for both Ports (Input & Output).
    With Paul's suggestion, and making sure that the Realtek is selected, you *should* not get that error.
    If you do, please post back.
    I would also recommend Steve Grisetti's two books on Premiere Elements. The first is designated for PE2, but very much of it still applies to later versions. His new book is focused on PE7, but contains a lot of great info on video editing in general (as does the first book).
    There is also a forum/site Muvipix, that is dedicated to helping people use aspects of video, audio and still. It also has a lot of great tutorials, plus a lot of Assets, like Menus, and stock footage. Much of that is free and available, and all is accessible with a subscription.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • My ipad has a black screen and won't start, any ideas?

    My Ipad 1 has a black screen and won't start, any ideas?  It is charged.

    If Paul's advice doesn't work try this.
    Hold down on the sleep button AND the home button at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons and let the iPad restart.
    BTW ...In order to start up under normal circumstances you only need to hold down on the sleep button for a couple of seconds or so until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
