Pavilion dv9843cl backlight died

The backlight on the screen of my Pavilion dv9843cl 17" laptop died.  I can see the shadow of characters on the screen as I type, so I know the liquid crystal part of the display still works and attaching an external monitor to the laptop works just fine.  I would like to know what I can do to get the backlight working again.  Is there a component I can replace?  If so, what is the HP Part #?  Cost would be helpful as well.  Are there published instructions on how to get to that component inside the machine?  I am pretty handy with electronics -- I used to build HeathKits and, much later, desktops....
Regards, Mikey

Older notebooks had a CCFL backlight that worked off an Inverter board.
3 things could be faulty here, Backlght itself, Inverter board or the cable that goes from the system board to the LCD panel.
I don't think it would be very expensive to fix it but since your PC is quite an old model, I can't say.

Does anyone else has this problem ???????
i tried formatting it using the ulitlity software which came along, but it doesn't help.

Hi, I have the same problem, I am using the MSI Mega Stick 256 4 months, everything worked fine so far. Suddenly the backlight died, and it cannot be re-enabled. Could it be just a software problem (Is there a firmware upgrade available?) or should I return the product and require replacement?
    Thanks.

  • Backlight dying?

Hi guys. I have a white macbook about 2 and a half years old. I think my backlight has gone out. If I take my brightness setting down to the very lowest and then up one I can get my screen to flash on. Sometimes for a few minutes. Do I need a new backlight? Or is it the inverter or inverter cable? How can I tell the difference. I'm a poor college student and I don't have hardly any money so any cheap fix would be much appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi Dinotorrid,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You may want to try going to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Settings For _ (Battery or Power Adapter from the popup menu) > Take each slider and put them all the way to the left > Uncheck Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible. If that works, then go back and change one setting at a time to see what was causing the problem.
If that doesn't work, you can try some of the techniques outlined in...

  • HP pavilion dv9700 Backlight went out.

Hi i have a HP pavillion dv9700 laptop and it just so happens that the backlight went out in the monitor you can see the picture clear if you put a bright light up to the monitor like the old gameboys thats how i know its the backlight. I have opened the lid up to make sure that no connections were loose and thats why i was getting no backlight, they seemed just fine so im not sure how to fix this. Do i purchase a whole new monitor for the laptop or is their something small i can fix? and the little backlight inverter thing under the monitor could i be that? I can provide pictures of everything if needed! please help!
Or could i just need to replace the LCD cable?

There are several IFs in this issue.  I'm like you.  If it is not under warranty, I am going to try something on my own. You can go to this link and put in your Product Number (not the model number) and see if the backlight, or its associated parts are available and what it might cost you to repair it.

  • HP Pavilion HDX9000 Connect to External DVD Player

Our older HP Pavilion HDX9000 DVD died and we wanted to use an external DVD player to drive the monitor on the HDX9000.   It does not seem possible to do this despite the HDMI and many other ports.  The PC is running Vista.   Any suggestions?

    Hi,
What is your external DVD player ? There are many USB DVD players for under $50 and you can use it as internal DVD player. You can't use DVD player from your home Hi Fi system because no available port on your computer to plug it in.

  • Backlight trouble. 20" iMac.

Hi, Im the owner of a 20" iMac, bought in late 2007. The backlight had recently broken. I'm looking for any advice on what I should do. It's out of warrenty.
The backlight died while the computer was running, though not under any heavey strain. At first I thought the screen had died. It's almost impossible to use, though with a light shining directly at the screen. Everyhing else seems to be working fine.
Thanks in advance for any help offered.
    Ben.

Take it to an Apple store and see what they say. If its too expensive then you could just get an adapter and plug a different screen in, may be ugly and more complicated but atleast you would still be able to use you mac.

  • Dark screen but Satellite P200-1Am still works - is backlight dead?

    Hello everyone.
Im on the computer of my aunt and uncle and it has a problem : the screen is dark , but not dead. I mean, I can still see things but very lightly.
But, on a external screen , everything is ok.
I searched on several forums and it seems like it's what I thought : the retro light seems to be dead.
Do you know if it could be something else than the backlight dying ?
And do you know if it's easy to repair myself, if its possible to buy the piece, or do I have to go to a shop ?
The computer is a toshiba P200-1Am, it has 5 years old so not under warranty anymore.
    Thanks a lot
    Gilles

    > Do toshiba sell pieces to some reseller or do they make everyone go to them topay full price? ( ifan inverter is around 50, 200 e seems to be quite a lot ... )
As far as I know the authorized service partner can order the needed parts directly from Toshiba.
But I found some part details googling around.
I found an compatible FL inverter part number: K000047740
Google for this part numbermaybe you can find some 3rd party resellers.
Not quite sure if you need an LCD wire set but found also one which should be compatible: LCD WIRESET-SINGLE part number: K000047750

  • T400 No backlight, No status lights on Inverter

    Hello,
My t400's backlight died not too long ago... pinkish hue before it completely cut out is a dead give away right?
Apparently this isn't the entire story, I replaced the backlight to no avail then replaced the inverter and still show no results.
An external monitor will run just fine and I can see an image on the screen with a flashlight shining on the screen.
I have noticed another symptom though, in addition to the backlight not working the green status lights on the inverter also do not turn on. However, when I first installed the new inverter I remember the lights working but the backlight not working.
    What do you guys think?
A connector/cable problem, a motherboard problem (fuse?), or inverter (I have a feeling this new one I got is fried).
    Thanks

  • T400 Screen - No backlight

    Hi everyone
On my lenovo t400, the screen is black but with enough light you can see the display.
There's no backlight. At one point, dimming the screen brightness allowed me too see but the
Screen started turning red and the backlight died but with light I can still see.
I use an external monitor which works.
Do I have the replace the entire screen or just the LCD inverter board to this
    Anyone?

If I buy an LCD inverter board nd swap it and it doesnt work, its most likely the motherboard ?
    richk wrote:
It has been my experience that the cable is the least likely thing to fail, so I would try that last. If you have a CCFL backlight, I would try the inverter because it is cheap and fairly easy to swap. If it is an LED backlight, my experience has been that the motherboard is most likely cause. • Pavilion dv9700t Laptop

My pavilion dv9700t laptop died.  A friend of a friend said that I could remove the hard drive from my laptop, buy a hard drive sleeve with a connector, and hook up the old hard drive to my new computer.  This would allow me to see everything on that hard drive.
Can someone please tell me exactly what this is?  I have seen hard drive sleeves online, and some kind of separate connectors, but do not know exactly what to buy.
The hard drive on the old laptop was not damaged.  The monitor/screen broke and then died.
    Thank you very much!

    Hi:
if you just need to get your files off the drive, I would just get an external notebook SATA to USB 2.0 drive enclosure such as the one I linked below.

  • In CS4 Use of File Place Does Not Center Images

I have been using CS3 for about 1 1/2 years, so of course had to give CS4 a try. I downloaded the trial. I immediately had an issue with File > Place.
I often use File > Place to add additional items into a document. I believe the expected functionality of File>Place is that the file should then be centered in the document.
Here is what I have done:
+ Create a 12"x12" document at 200ppi (I have also tried to create a document at 2400x2400 pixels)
+ Use File>Place to add a square 2400x2400 pixel image (JPG file) into the document
+ The added layer is now offset ever so slightly in the new document.
+ Further observation shows that the horizontal reference point is at 1202 (screen shot attached), thus creating an offset from center. I change it to 1200 and sure enough the paper is centered perfectly. I thought maybe changing it once would make it the same next time, but that is not the case.
+ When I used the File>Place command, I was zoomed out (25%), and the entire image was viewable on screen. If I zoom out further, say 8.33%, the offset is 1206.
I am able to duplicate this on two different computers with the following configurations:
    Computer #1
    + Windows XP Professional Version 2002 SP2
    + AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ (3.01GHz)
    + 4GB RAM
+ nVidia GeForce 8600 GT, driver version 6.14.11.5819
    Computer #2
    + HP Pavilion dv9843cl Laptop
    + Windows Vista x64 SP1
+ Intel Core Duo processor T8100 (2.1 GHz)
    + 4GB RAM
+ nVidia GeForce 8600M GS with 512MB DDR dedicated graphics memory, ForceWare version 167.43
    + Video BIOS version: 60.83.4f.00.22
    Operating System: Windows XP Professional
    Browser: Firefox
Video display card / driver version: nVidia GeForce 8600 GT, driver version 6.14.11.5819

"Place" ..... It is not all the easy to understand how place works without studying its behavior.  Often it will work in a way your not expecting if you do not understand how it works. There is a setting in Photoshop preferences Resize Image during Place. Un Checking this setting does not mean the image will not be resize nor does checking  this setting mean that it will be resize. On top on top of that the seems to be something in Photoshop on My system that keeps changing the setting to the checked state.
What the heck am I writing am I trying to make this worse.  No I'm not.  To prove that I first tell you it is very easy to center position a placed layer in an action after the Place step add a step select all the two layer>Align layers to selection>Horizontal Center then vertical center. The deselect...
    Place....
There is a lot going on remember in Photoshop a Layer can be any size  Larger/smaler/same as the canvas and can have any aspect ratio. If the placed image has more pixels them a canvas side size and the preference is checked the placed image will be transformed to fit within the canvas size. If not checked the placed image will transformed to the same dpi resolution so no pixels will be changed.    The only time a place image is not transformed is when the the preference is not checked and the placed image file has the same dpi as the current Photoshop Document.  In this cast the image is placed in at 100% size be it smaller/larger/same as canvas size.

  • Intermittant Blank Screen

I'm having a different blank screen problem from those whose MBPs have a blank screen at startup.
My MacBook Pro, purchased new July 2007 (NVidia 8600M GT), is experiencing intermittent blank screen problems. Basically I'll be working at the computer, typing away, when all of the sudden the screen goes blank. I've had this happen both with and without external power plugged in (it's not a low battery issue). I've had this problem both when runnng OS X and when I've been running Windows Vista via Boot Camp, which has me thinking that this is a hardware problem.
Sometimes the screen goes blank for just a second or two and then comes back on its own. Other times it goes blank and stays blank. On occasion, I've been able to get the screen back by unplugging the magsafe connector, waiting a few seconds, and then plugging it in again. On other occasions, this hasn't worked at all, and I've had to manually power down the computer and restart.
Anyone have any idea what's going on? Is my LCD backlight dying? Something else? Haven't taken it to a Mac store yet, but given all that I've been reading about defective 8600M logic boards, I'm dreading the thought of sending my computer away for a week, only to have it come back and break again.

I just had the same problem with intermittent blank screen. I was pleasantly surprised that resetting SMC and PRAM fixed it. It's worth a try.
