PB G4 Combo Drive Writer intermittant failure

Hi-
Using Toast 6 (have successfully for some time now) my writen CD's (data) fail to verify, although they mount. The problem started last night, after an intensive burning session (6 disks in a row). This morning, after an all night shutdown, verification still fails.
After the first year of ownership, I had the drive replaced due to a writing problem. This one has worked fine for years. DVD's play fine. CD's boot, I have restarted, let the machine cool, reset PMU, restarted Toast.
I watch alot of Netflix DVD's on the road and am wondering if the lens might be dirty. I am due for a new machine, so I don't want to replace the drive just because it won't write. Currently it's the only wat I have to burn archival CD's
Any suggestions? TIA

Many people find the ifixit.com online repair guides worth looking at.
If the drive worked again after the cleaning (after it had stopped working before that), and if you're going to write off the drive anyway, you may want to try giving it a manual cleaning. I remember at least one person who posted that actually opening up the drive and doing a manual cleaning of the lense/s was the only thing that worked for him. Not for the faint of heart though.

  • Combo drive causes boot failure

How do you fix an iBook that will not boot from hard drive when the combo drive is plugged in to the logic board? If the drive cable is unplugged, the iBook will boot from the hard drive when connected to the firewire port. It will also boot from the logic board if the combo drive is unplugged. Is the problem the optical drive? Is it the cable? Is it the logic board?
The computer functions perfctly with the optcal drive removed.

  • Combo drive failure: Ejects all discs

While watching a very scratched DVD, the combo drive on my month-old Mac Mini began making very loud noises; after that the film skipped and froze. After a few minutes of disturbingly loud knocking and clicking noises, I turned the computer off by pressing the power button. After restart, I ejected the disc by moving it to the trash icon in the dock. Now the combo drive refuses to read any other disc that I put in: DVD, music, or data. It makes spinning sounds and then ejects them after about 10 seconds.
Everything else is still working fine. Is the combo drive dead or is there a fix I can attempt at home?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It is possible that the drive has been damaged, in which case if it can't read the correct track of an inserted disk, it will automatically eject it. The fact the drive pulls the disk in and spins it up at all suggests the drive is otherwise functional, thus tending to indicate the lens is at fault.
You might first try a PMU/SMC reset (depending on whether yours is a PPC or Intel mini. This would be the first step if you were getting errors re failure to calibrate power when trying to write to a blank, and I would not have much confidence of it working in this situation since it seems unlikely to be a controller issue, but it's worth trying. Instructions are below - PMU if it's a PPC and SMC if it's an Intel.
If that doesn't help, try a lens cleaner. That has been known to help in these situations.
Ultimately, if the system is no longer under warranty, you would be better I think to get an external firewire drive than replace the internal. It would be much the same price and tend to give better performance!

  • DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive Will Not Read Or Write To Any Media

I  have an HP ZT1130, running XP SP3.  It has a Toshiba SD-R2102 DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive that will not read or write to any media.  I don't get any error messages.  The drive is present in MY Computer & Device Manager indicates it is working properly.  When I place any disk in the drive, I get a message to "insert a disk".  I have already uninstalled & reinstalled the device, removed the "high & low filters" in the registry, operating from a "clean boot state", run a registry cleaner.  I am currently using Microsoft Media Player 11.  I have run out of things to check, I hope someone has some answers.

  • Intermittent combo drive

    Hello,
    I have an iBook G3 600MHZ 8mb vram (late 2001).
I have fitted a combo drive to it. The combo Drive seems to work fine reading DVD's Wirteing CD's but some times the drive refuses to open. I press the eject button the symbol stays up for a while and nothing happens. Then if I go to system profiler or disk utility the appllications hang when trying to acess the ATA bus. It seems to have this problem with and with out patchburn.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

It sounds like a hardware problem. It could be the drive itself.

  • Burning iDVD to DVD disc with i Book G4 combo drive and external DVD drive

7/6/2006. After much recent experimentation with iLife, iMovie and iDVD, I found how to use themes and set up movies in my iBook G4 purchased two years ago near Chicago (updated to OS 10.3.9). To burn an iDVD file to a DVD disc on a "combo drive" (that is, it has no DVD writer drive) iBook or other comparable Mac, go to File on the top horizontal tool bar and down there to "burn to DiscImage." Depending on the size of the file, it will take about four hours for every hour of movie file to encode it. I just set it up that night, went to bed and woke up the next morning with it finished. Once encoded, it doesn't need to be encoded again and can be used in the future. But Toast 7 Titanium will not burn it to an external DVD writer as "video." but it will burn the video file as "data." And pretty fast. The 'data' file still remains a video file and will do everything the video file does, only now from an external round DVD disc, too. I discovered this by accident, although Matt (tech support) reminded me about DiscImage. Later, David (also in tech support) told me to download newer versions of iDVD and iMovie, but that did not work, nor had he ever tried it. Remember for a combo drive and using iDVD, and also iMovie, under File burn to DiscImage and save on an external disc as "data." My external DVD write is by LaCie. Best wishes. Like altero said, you're not using Toast properly... Follow these directions:
Suggest you create a disc image from iDVD and then burn the DVD. In iDVD: File/Save as Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • Combo drive is frustrating...

My combo drive has just recently stopped reading discs, strangely making the sounds of a normal functioning apple drive but stops abruptly after almost every sound (of the drive)... Seconds later, it spits it out. This has just started yesterday. This is very strange that lots of apple products seem to have some sort of problem after the 3-year Applecare expires. It is very annoying, please help.---------------------- Would this work? http://cgi.ebay.com/Powerbook-12-G4-Combo-Drive-Working-Pull-Look-NR_W0QQitemZ20 0117722931QQihZ010QQcategoryZ14909QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It might, except there are significant issues with fraud on eBay:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/fraudreports/topic1939.html
There are these things you can do to prevent optical drive failure:
    1. Only use disks which follow these standards:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58641
    2. Do not label or write on discs themselves except the inner ring.
    3. Buy only jewelcase media from Verbatim, Kodak, Imation, and Sony when it comes to CD-R. With DVDs, check the rating of media on http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia/ Spindle media has proven a shorter lifespan.
    4. Burn at less than maximum speed.
    5. Do not multitask when burning.
    6. Be careful to only touch media by the inner ring and outer edge.

  • Need help troubleshooting my combo drive

I have a mini with a weird drive issue. The drive will read dvds but not cds. Any cd I insert will act lke its mounting for a few minutes and then it will eject. Dvd discs work normal. Any idea where to start? I have tried opening Disk Utility while the cd is trying to mount, but I only get the spinning beach ball.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

The combo drives include two different lasers. One reads DVDs and the other reads/writes CDs. It's entirely possible your CD laser has gone out of alignment. It sounds to me like you might need to call AppleCare Support or take your Mac mini into an Apple Authorized Service Provider to have it checked out.

  • Could iBook G4's combo drive read DVD+RW discs?

I want to know whether it can read these ones or not.

    Nie Hau!
To answer your question, yes. A combo drive CAN read DVD+RW disks. It cannot write to them, however. You would need a Super Drive for that.

  • G5 Combo Drive swap...will it work in my G4/400?

This may be the wrong forum for this but I thought I'd start here since you guys have been great helping me with my "new" G5.1.6 GHz.
My G5 came with a Combo drive and not a SuperDrive like I thought it would have since the original configurations as listed by Apple state all models came with SuperDrives. Seems this G5 was a custom order and they had a Combo drive installed at the factory.
I recently bought a Pioneer 112D from OWC that I'm going to install in the G5 and I was wondering if I could put the Combo drive I'm taking out of the G5 into my G4/400 Gigabit ethernet that has just a CD/DVD reader that doesn't write to anything. That way I could at least burn CD's in the old G4.
OWC doesn't show any optical drives available for the 'ol G4/400 so I wasn't sure if it just wasn't able to utilize the newer drives that burn CD's.
Before I go messing with my perfectly working G4/400 I thought I'd run this by you guys first.
    Thanks,
    John

It's easy on both Macs. Instructions for optical drive replacement on the G5 here:

Make sure to remove the plastic bezel on the front of the new drive before you install it.

  • Is Sony CRX170E the original "Combo Drive" for MDD?

    Hello all,
Last week I bought on eBay a used Power Mac G4 "Mirrored Drive Doors" 867 DP model, which arrived today. Unfortunately, the optical drive in the computer is apparently unable to recognize or read DVD discs, even though the specifications for this model indicate that the included optical drive is supposed to be a "Combo Drive" that reads DVDs as well as reading and writing CDs. I'm trying to determine whether the optical drive in this particular computer is original equipment, whether it is supposed to be able to read DVDs, whether it is malfunctioning, and whether I have reason to complain to the seller of the item.
The drive recognizes and reads a previously-burned CD-R just fine, but refuses to recognize either of two original Apple DVD-ROM discs that I've tested it with. System Profiler indicates that the drive is a Sony model CRX170E. Searching the Web, I've found that this model is indeed an OEM drive manufactured for Apple by Sony, but I haven't been able to determine conclusively the answers to the following questions:
    (1) Is the Sony CRX170E the drive that was originally installed in this Mac model? (If not, then I'll need to ask the seller to explain how it got in there.)
    (2) Is the Sony CRX170E in fact a Combo Drive, which should be able to read DVDs, or is it just a CD-only drive? (If it's a Combo Drive, then I'll have to troubleshoot its failure to recognize DVDs.)
Any help you could provide in answering these questions would be much appreciated.
For the record, here's a link to the eBay auction for this computer (including the item description, which clearly states that it comes with a Combo Drive, and that there are no hardware problems with the computer):
And here are links to the specs for this computer model, at EveryMac and Apple, respectively:
    Thanks,
    ~ Justin

Here are the details for the drive as displayed in System Profiler:
    *SONY CD-RW CRX170E:*
    Manufacturer: SONY
    Model: SONY CD-RW CRX170E
    Revision: 2.2d
    Drive Type: CD-RW
    Disc Burning: Apple Supported/Shipped
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: No
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
As for Mac OS X version, I'm accustomed to using 10.4 on the Mac I'm replacing, but this "new" MDD came with a clean install of 10.3 on it. The problem reading DVDs first became apparent when I attempted (unsuccessfully) to read or boot from my 10.4 installation DVD on the "new" machine.
And yes, a replacement drive is always an option, but it would cost me about five thousand "pennies", which is an expense that shouldn't be necessary as I bought this computer with the understanding that it would be able to read DVDs as-is.

My DVD combo Drive is going on my eMac, and I'd like to know if I can buy a replacement through Apple or through a 3rd party. Also would like to know how difficult it is to replace by myself. My machine is an eMac 800 MHz PowerPC G4, 1gig Ram. The specs on the drive are:

    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO

Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Steve

    Hi Steve,
No-one bothers with Combos these days as Superdrives (DVD burning) are quite cheap.
I replaced in my eMac a Combo, originally a Pioneer drive with a Pioneer Super DVD 109 8X DVD-R/RW drive from OWC. It works great.
The current model is a DVR - 115 D but is essentially the same and would suit your model.
    https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/superdrives/powermac/
    Installing it was easy.
Remove the shell, and carefully disconnect the power wire.
Remove the screws that hold the optical drive, slide it out and install the new one.
    No software drivers are needed.
