** PC to Mac OS X Developing

Hi All
I am new to Mac OS
I used to develop on a PC I had Internet Information Server, SQL Database and Access Database IDE Visual InterDev. Using ASP and VB, Java to code in. Yes it was some time ago. I used Acces for testing and SQL server for pro Apps.
I now have a MacPro and wanted to get back into programming/developing and I am getting into Actionscript 3 and Flex2. I know OSX has an Apache Web Server but what would be the equivalent to Access and SQL server on the Mac.
I have seen Filemaker , mySql but I am not sure any help would be grateful.
I just want start making apps with a DB back end…
I just want to know which would be the best db to go for and why.

I agree with etresoft, look at MySQL for the database back end. I'm not sure whether Actionscript and Flex can access a database directly or not, though. I think you might need a kind of hybrid solution. In other words, you'd build your Flash or Flex application that runs in your browser via the Flash plugin. The Flash app contacts some kind of application that would talk to your database via the Apache web server. PHP is probably the easiest to set up on the Mac, but you could use Java or Perl if you want, too.
As for whether or not this is the right place to answer your questions, it's fine, it's just that there aren't a ton of people who hang out here. So it sometimes takes a while to get a response.

The best way to get into Mac or iPhone Development?

Hi, Ive been meaning to get into XCode and start developing for Mac and / or iPhone, but because ive been study for exams ive put it off. There finally over and I would love to dive into the development world. Ive done very basic programing before but that was a long time ago. So i guess what im getting at is where is the best place to start. I have no objective C or C knoledge but really would love to learn as I want career in software development primarily with apple products. I mean theirs loads of YouTube tutorials but yet I still get puzzeled. So any tips, advise etc would be much appriciatred

SQL file does not open in Mac with SQL Developer

Hi,
I have my .sql extension files in mac associated with SQL Developer, but when I open the file SQL Developer does not start; nothing happens.
I checked all the associations and it seems correct.
Any suggestion?

Hi Mike,
I can provide solution if you can tell me the registry value(HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\sqlwb.sql.9.0\Shell\Open\Command). I believe there is an extra %1 which is causing this.

(add %1 and that should fix this forever)

Been offered a power mac G5 2ghz for £150 but been looking at getting a new iMac for iOS development would this machine achieve iOS development?

From Windows to Mac, as a developer?

Greetings.
Seeing as I am moving away from 'hardcore gaming' and more into game development, I have played with the thought of selling my gaming pc and buy an imac. At our school, we have borrowed macbook pros, and while I think the mac in itself is really slow, it feels like ios is a very friendly designer operative system.
Is there anyone else here "in my shoes" who have converted from windows to mac? It might sound silly, but if I actually decide to go for it, I have to sell my current pc to afford an imac.The prices should be about the same, so that's not a problem. What's kind of scary is the big leap from being a native windows user.
Anyone here who might know a great deal about both? Would there be a direct + in using mac instead of windows?
I am using Unity and Photoshop, and there are no windows-exclusive software I am using.

I don't know what was wrong with your borrowed MacBook Pro. Don't let a misconfigured school machine cloud your judgement.
But why an iMac? I suggest last year's Mac Mini. You could use it with your current monitor. You can also get a new MacBook Pro. My 13" 2011 is my primary machine. You just have to do your research before buying a new machine. Apple is going 110% into the consumer market. Make sure you don't buy a machine that is $100 cheaper but half the power. Double-check the memory. When Apple says the memory is "upgradeable", they mean you can pay double to upgrade it at time of purchase. After that, you are stuck with it.
The biggest plus to using a Mac is that it is a requirement for iOS.

Mac OSX Application Development

Hey all.
I don't know if this is the proper forum or not, but maybe it is or maybe you can point me in the right direction.
Anyway, I'd like to develop a program for the Mac that mimics a Windows program that is not and probably will never be written for the Mac platform. So I'm bored and thought I'd start researching how to tackle this.
I have been reading about Applescript Studio but I think that will be too simplistic for my design.
I'm thinking one of the C based languages but would like input...C, or C++, or Object-Oriented...what's the difference? Is the difference all in what the program will due or just language differences?
Secondly, I don't care if the application is Cocoa or Carbon, I just want it to work on the Mac platform. So what would be the easiest, but still efficient, way to tackle that?
Basically the program will be a database of records that resembles a glorified spreadsheet (this is, as I said, a previously Windows based applications for pilots allowing us to keep a very nice record of flight times and various other criteria. Very sleek but not enough to keep me in the Windows world).
Any thoughts? Any references?

First of all, I almost missed your post. You posted this in the "AppleScript" forum which I normally avoid like the plague because I detest AppleScript. But you really aren't talking about AppleScript at all.
What you describe sounds like a basic Core Data application that should be quite easy to do in Objective-C. Do you have a link for the Windows software to compare?
There may be some 4GL solution that would work even better. Bento or RealBASIC might be options.
Also, is this something that you really want to do or something that you would really like to have done. If you really want to do it yourself, I would suggest trying Bento. You can try Objective-C too. If you can't figure it out - no big deal. I couldn't figure out how to pilot a plane on my own. If this project were fairly easy or enough of a demand, some programmer (such as myself) might be interested in writing it.

Got tired of iPhoto and finally committing to using lightroom. Using the Lightroom 5 i purchased last year and want to commit to making it my primary way of managing and editing all of my photos ( about 8K). Is there a way to have imported images from my hard drive/Finder (MAC) show as the edited or moved image when i am working in lightroom? Basically want what i am doing in Lightroom to be reflected on my hard drive and vice versa so that i don't have to "add" or "copy" every time I want to work in lightroom.

Unfortunately Lightroom does have certain limitations:
A particular catalog can only be accessed by one instance of Lightroom at one time.
(ie it is not designed for multiple simultaneous access.);
As far as I am aware a catalog cannot be accessed remotely although images can be.
Victoria Brampton has a solution using Dropbox where both the images and the catalog are stored on Dropbox.
Individual users download the catalog to thier workstation and work on images etc and then shut down Lightroom and update the catalog back to Dropbox.
No one else should acessing the catalog or images while one user is using the catalog and images otherwise a conflict will arise and someones work will be erased.

For MAC you will have to use AppleScript or Javascript, since COM is a purely WIN technology.
In my opinion you should go with Javascript that way you will be able to share the same codebase both on a WIN and a MAC machine.

My i-mac (9 years old) has suddenly developed a large black spot

My flat-screen 9-year-old i-mac has suddenly developed a large black spot in the middle at the very top of the screen. It does not appear to have overheated. The problems started with a funny black ridge along the bottom of the screen and then turned into the current spot at the top. I turned to computer off for a few days, but that did not seem to solve the problem. many thanks.

Apparently your screen has partially failed. This is a hardware problem and needs a tech to repair it.

There is a previous screen that gives the option to renew iOS, Mac and Safari Developer programs, I only select the iOS one but 2 screens after this the page attached is shown.
I'm purchasing this from Ireland so not sure if that specific version of the site is affected. We don't use the Mac program so any help in removing this would be appreciated.

Here is a 2 for one, On a Mac Pro 5,1 2.66ghz 6 core Xeon.

My mac pro is developing some strangeness, now when I go to start up the machine in morning it doesnt turn on until I have hit the power button 3 times, sometimes even this doesnt do the trick so I unplug it wait a couple sec and plug back in. So far its always actually started and I am happy for that as I am busy on 2 jobs right now and cannot afford this. Any ideas on what could be happening? This behaviour started probably 2 weeks ago. I have apple care and machine is only about 7 months old...
Second part I recently purchased a memory upgrade kit from Ramjet taking th e system from 12 to 24 gigs, the ram are 6 matched pairs of 4gb and according to the info I have found should be exactly what is needed. 1033mhz ddr3, anyway I istalled it last week during a short lull. after a week I have removed it and replaced my original 12 gigs as the computer was behaving very slowly and when I checked the activity monitor the drive was doing crazy read write activity like i was rendering something or moving big geometry in 3D. This is with nothing but AM skype and safari running. anyway it gets better when I re install my oem ram the computer kept telling me 3 times in a row that I had not put the ram in correctly so I just moved teh chips around until it was happy.
Now when I check activity monitor with original ram I am back to disc activity around 1.4 gig read and 670mb write while its just sitting as oposed to 20+ gb with the ramjet memory.
It seems to be runnning fine now but I am really concerned that there is something fundamentally wrong with this machine now.
Any thoughts or assist greatly appreciated.

Ask Ramjet to take them back, test, and send a new set to test.
When you get new RAM, I actually recommend a quick test with Apple Hardware test at the least. There are also some memory test and performance uttilities worth running. Some run Geekbench (has memory bandwidth) as well as PRIME for OS X.
But you should contact Ramjet. Maybe have them take it back and get Crucial or Kingston (they really do make a difference).
Watch your system more closely, monitor temps as well as use AM.
Maybe your power cord is bad or the wall outlet, or if using a UPS maybe that is not adequate (900W unit?).
