Pc2pc crossover cable connection

hi guys!
well it's my first one so first of all I would like to say hi and move forward.
I have 2 laptops + router. lets name my laptops master and slave. both are using wlan, windows 7 and the slave also Arch linux (no X, just the core) without any complications but... when I want to upgrade my Arch (pacman -Su etc. X-serwer and others) I'm forced to take my laptop and manually connect it to my router with ethernet cable which sucks and I thought I could make it easier - the master is connected to router with wlan connection (so no ethernet cable) and at the same time with the slave (wlan off) with crossover cable. I have tried to establish the internet connection but nothing seems to work

I don't know if it's possible to establish such a connection without making any changes with sub-masking etc. and make my master pc so it will be recognizable to slave such as router direct connection.

ok so I haven't learnet yet - so I'm little confused... I use i4965, installed also the wpa_supplicant but - I'm not sure how to set it up - I found this and this. I made copy of wpa_supplicant (to be safe), then opened wpa_supplicant file and have found examples and the places which could be filed up with my SSID name and password but I have seen some additional lines in other examples (other sites) like:
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=0
eapol_version=1
# ap_scan=2 was the one for me you may try 0 or 1 indstead of 2
ap_scan=2
fast_reauth=1
and I don't know if I have to add this lines too or just live it and forget it. (on some german site someone said that it is necessary only when you compile this file from the source)
and second I just don't understand what this mean and what should I do with it wpa_passphrase mywireless "secretpassphrase" and this wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -B
I thought it will be easier just tip my data into blank fields and start the connection.
and the last question - I don't want to start my wlan0 with my pc, I would to activate it with ifconfig blabla but after activating wlan0 don't want to set everything new (wpa_supplicant data).

Burning iMovies, Dead Superdrive and Crossover Cable Connections - oh my!

Is the following solution to my scenario possible:
I have a dead Superdrive in one of my eMacs and am unable to burn (obviously). I would still like to use the eMac to create movies using iMovie but am wondering if I can connect this eMac to another eMac using a crossover cable, and use the eMac with the working Superdrive to burn the DVD?
I have a fear that this wont be possible if the video files need to be on the computer that is doing the burning. I teach at a school and money is not freely accessible (I realize I could get an external burner and problem solved but this might not be possible and am looking for alternate solutions - maybe this is too crazy for anyone to have attempted before).

Probably a slightly easier and faster way to access the iMovie project from the "defective" drive eMac is to hook the two emacs together with a standard Firewire cable. Now boot the eMac with the bad drive and the project into Target mode. This makes that eMac look like an external hard drive to the other Mac and will appear on the other Mac's desktop as a drive. Now simply open the project directly off the hard drive of the eMac and it will be no different than loading the project from an external drive. Or you can simply copy the project over into the other eMac.

Crossover cable to router issue

i have AX with iTunes as my router. i am trying to make a motorola print server work with it (suggestion: DON'T buy a motorola product that says it is mac compatible unless you love migranes).
in the second stage of the setup, i have to connect the print server to my computer with a crossover cable and type the print server's ip into a browser to get its setup screen (ie, http://10.0.1.100 because i know the print server's ip is 10.0.1.100).
my mac can't see the print server when it is connected with the crossover cable (i know because browser connection doesn't work and pinging its ip doesn't work). do i need to turn AX off? is there anything else i need to turn on or off so that my mac can see the print server through a crossover cable connection?

If you have two networks (wireless via Airport and wired via Ethernet) that both use the 10.0.1.X subnet then there may be a simple reason, and solution to, your problem. Your Mac must choose a network interface to send packets to and your's is likely choosing Airport instead of the Ethernet port. You can easily choose which interface the Mac uses first by opening the Network preference pane, then choosing "Network Port Configurations" from the "Show" pull-down, then either drag "Built-in Ethernet" to the of the list or temporarily disable "Airport".
Once you have finished configuring your printer then make sure to change your settings back to how they were.

How do I connect Macbook Air to Macbook via ethernet crossover cable?

Hi all,
For the life of me, I'm having a lot of troubles connecting my Macbook Air to Macbook, here is what I've done so far:
1. Turned on sharing in System preferences on both systems and given "read and write" access to "myself", "users" and "everyone".
2. Then connected a ethernet cable to both macbook and macbook air (via original Apple USB ethernet)
3. When I go to Finder > Shared on both systems, they say cannot open drop box insufficient privileges.
Please someone link to step by step tutorial of Mac OS X 10.5 sharing through ethernet cable or correct me on what I'm doing wrong, and I don't have firewire cable otherwise things would've easier .

You are probably over thinking the problem.
Do not use a crossover cable. Just connect the two machines directly with a standard ethernet cable and they will auto assign ip addresses and be accessible to each other. The ethernet chips in both machines will detect the cable, etc and it "just works".
Also your sharing settings do not need to be that open. I would recommend to pulling them back so that you are not giving the world access to your machine.

How to share an airport internet connection with XP thru a crossover cable

Any help appreciated - My iMac is connected to the internet and home network through airport. I would like to connect an XP machine to the iMac through ethernet with a crossover cable. I'd then like to be able to share the iMac's internet and network connection with the XP and file share between computers.
How should I configure the machines? I can get them to share files (with a manual IP address) but even though "Internet Sharing" is clicked on the iMac the XP does not connect to the internet.

Yes, I do have "internet sharing" turned on. It is set to share the connection from Airport to computers using Ethernet. But there is no internet on the PC. Should they both be set for DHCP? (they are)

Burning an iMovie and Connecting eMacs via Crossover Cables

If you have finished editing your movie and have it in an iDVD project, you can create a disk image of your project and use that for burning the actual DVD disks. You can connect the two eMacs via Firewire and use the 'bad' one that has your project on it in target mode. It will then appear on the other one as another drive. You can copy the disk image file of your iDVD project and then burn it on the eMac whose Superdrive is good, using Disk Utility.

Connecting Macbook to PS3 using Crossover Cable

I am attempting to connect my Playstation 3 to my Macbook. My Macbook is connected to a Telus internet stick which is successfully connected to the internet. I have just purchased a Nexxtech Crossover cable and have connected that between my Macbook and PS3.
The issue is getting my PS3 connected to the internet.
I have enabled internet sharing in system settings on the Mac.
For the PS3, I am assuming to go: network settings, internet connection settings, custom, wired connection, auto detect, and then manual ip address. The problem I believe is the settings for IP address, subnet mask, primary and secondary DNS. It is these fields of information that I don't know how to fill.
Much help is appreciated, I have been at this for hours.

You don't need a crossover cable as at least the Mac is auto MDI/MDI-X.
The PS3 should use DHCP and you might encounter problems depending on wether you have the firewall turned on or not on the Mac.

Connecting the RT to the computer by crossover cable

I have a problem in connecting the real time to the host computer by crossover cable. Sometimes it gives me the error that the connection with the RT is lost. Whenever I get this error, I can't connect the RT to the computer anymore. Although the Ip is set to be the same, the led light on the ethernet port of the RT doesn't blink. I think there is a problem in connecting my RT to the computer. I appreciate if you can help me to figure this out.

Yes, I followed the instruction completely. It seems there is a hardware defect in our PXI. Whenever the real time disconnects from the PC, the ethernet light turns off and there is no communication between the RT and the PC. The RT is connected to the PC by crossover cable and the link lights should be displayed when a valid connection is present. Shouldn't?
After having this problem, I can not make the Rt and PC talk but if I plug the RT to other ethernet cards on other computer, the light starts blinking and after that I unplug from the other computer and connect the cable to the PC and it works. Is it a sign of hardware defect?
What should I do to solve this issue?

Allocating an IP to a device connected by crossover cable?

Hi,
I have just received a Nokia Dbox2 which should in theory be able to send live TV via the Ethernet port, and it works fine with a PC (unfortunately).
I want to use my Mac to record from the Dbox2 and have a crossover RJ45 cable as required but don't know how to allocate an IP address to the box. I take it I have to deactivate my airport when connecting the crossover cable to the dbox2 and of course have the power on both the MAC and the device.
How do I allocate an IP address to the dbox2 via the Ethernet?
Where will I be able to see the new device (same place as where my iDisk is placed)?
Any ideas would be highly appreciated.

Is a crossover cable necessary here

I am trying use an ethernet cable to connect my iMac G5 directly to an Acer laptop running Windows XP. Have turned on SMB file sharing on the Mac, have a file for sharing set up on the laptop. Everything I've read in the discussions and Apple's support pages seem to indicate that the Mac should auto-detect the laptop, or that I should be able to get my Mac to show up on my laptop's "My Network Places" using the connection wizard or other method, but it's just not happening. What I've read in the discussions and suppport area also indicate that a crossover cable shouldn't be necessary -- or could that not be the case? If you have any insight into why I can't get this to work, I'd be most grateful if you could share it.

But actually what I was really missing was a little fact that you need know: how to give an IP address to each computer when they are just two machines connected with no internet connection. In case anyone reading this needs to know, the following on how to name the ip address for the Windows machine here from http://www.smartcomputing.com/Editorial/article.asp?article=articles/2004/w1510/ 38w02/38w02.asp :
"Click Start, My Network Places, and Local Area Connection.
Click the Properties button on the General tab of the Local Area Connection Status window. Scroll through the list of connections, if necessary, and click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Then click the Properties button.
On the next window, click the Use The Following IP Address radio button and type your IP address and subnet mask. For home or office networks, you should use internal IP addressing, in the form of 192.168.0.x (where x represents any number from 1 to 256). For example, if you use 192.168.0.1 for the first computer, use 192.168.0.2 on the second computer. For this IP range, your subnet on both PCs must be 255.255.255.0.
Click OK and Close. "
To give the Mac its ip address you go to the Finder under Network, and TCP/IP -- I hope Apple can put this in their support pages, would have saved me hours.

Attempting to transfer files via ethernet crossover cable and FTP

So i just got my new laptop yesterday, i need to transfer my media (Movies, shows, and Music) To the new computer, i want to do this via CAT5 because it will take less time.
What i tried to do is take the information provided on the WiKi HERE
On the computer which has the media, i did:
# ip link set up dev eth0
# ip addr add 139.96.30.100/24 dev eth0 # arbitrary address
Then on the new laptop i did:
# ip link set up dev eth0
# ip addr add 139.96.30.120/24 dev eth0 # arbitrary address
This assigned the IP correctly and also connected the computers to the ethernet network via WICD, but when i attempted to log into Filezilla (With the internal IP address, the username, and password on the account of the new computer) It failed, said that it couldnt connect.
I have httpd and sshd running on both laptops
Anything i did wrong? I know the commands i used were from Internet Sharing but in theory those commands should still work for this.

Actually i did not do a ping, i was not thinking about it at the time (Had a few drinks)
But WICD was connected to the interface, im about to hop in the shower and once i come back out i will set it up once more and this time i will send a ping.
Also, im only using 2 computers and am too cheep to buy a switch, plus its not needed lol. But i do have 1GB ethernet ports on both computers, so it should be faster then WiFi (Which i have gotten the wifi to run successfully, just takes too long)

I connected two systems with a crossover cable for Oracle 10gR2 RAC like below commands.

The I connected with a crossover cable between systems.
Once, I was able to ping between systems. After I reinstalled OS, I cannot ping between systems.

Share Internet by crossover cable

How can I share Internet connection by crossover cable?
I have Ubutnu on my laptop. On there, wireless and everything works.
However I am trying to install Arch-linux on my main (desktop) PC. And there, during basic install, it can not detect my wireless connection.
How can I share connection from my laptop with my desktop?
How can I connect to the connect on my laptop from Arch?

check if iface names and ips fit your gear, the network between both computers connected with the x-over cable must be different from your router's lan network.

Oracle RAC and crossover cable for private network

I have the following configuration: two database servers, each has four network cards, two for public network and two for private, cluster network. Each public card has own IP-address and both have virtual IP-address, defined in operation system (SLES-9) for redundancy. Because I have only two machines in the cluster I want to connect the two machines for private with crossover cable without switch. For redundancy I want to make two connections between machines. Is it at all possible? How should I defined all network interfaces and what should be included in /etc/hosts for properly work of Oracle cluster?

Hi,
You can build a RAC witch CROSSOVER, but the Oracle no homolog.
As you have 4 cards, 2 to public (redundancy) and 2 to interconnect (redundancy) you need of a software to to make a TEAM, and create a card virtual that will have a IP address.

Are there benefits to adding crossover cable between two servers for DFS replication and SQL Always On?

I have two identical servers with 4 network interfaces each. The primary usage for two servers is hosting SQL Server instance with Always On high availability and dfs replication. Two network interfaces from each server will be used to connect to main network,
while for the other two (on each) I was thinking about using crossover cable to possibly provide shorter path for two servers to communicate.
Will there be any benefits to doing so, moreover, would teaming two crossover cable help more?
Edit: Below is the link to the article where I got the idea of moving DFS Replication traffic to crossover. I wasn't able to find any info whether same thing is applied to SQL Always On high availability.

According to your description, my understanding is that you want to connect 2 servers by crossed cable(2 NICs).
Just as the blog suggested, directly connect the servers by crossed cable and configure corresponding route entries will improve efficiency.
If both servers have 2 NICs to connect, I recommend you to team the 2 NICs for bandwidth aggregation. NIC teaming is supported by Windows Server 2012/2012 R2, detailed information you may reference:
