PDF/A natively created in Mac OS X. Is still impossible?
Hi everybody,
I need to generate PDF/A files (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDF/A) in 10.5/10.6 but I can't figure out how to do it!
The best solution I found is to print to PostScript and then convert the files with Adobe Distiller but it is a nasty solution as in Windows is pretty easy as there are many ways to natively do this!
The best way would be to have a virtual PDF printer able to create this kind of documents but I can't find anything on the web.
I need PDF/A so I can put digital signatures on them with Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro.
I already tried with CUPS and the Adobe virtual printer but I couldn't manage to have PDF/A files as output.
Thanks everybody in advance!
I don't do this, but I know it is possible...
Maybe from the CUPS-PDF add-on, or by creating your own driver (filter script) using ps2pdf:
http://www.ghostscript.com/doc/current/Ps2pdf.htm

When I select the text from the PDF document, choose the copy option, then paste, I see garbled text in the Word document. I tried OCR recognition using Acrobat Professional 9
but that failed stating "This page has graphics other than images and text. It cannot be captured"
I checked the properties of the PDF document, and noticed that it was created from Mac os x10.6.7 quartz pdf context and PDF version was 1.4.
The text I am trying to copy is not an image and the document has no protection at all.
What else can I try?If you look at the fonts (ctrl-D>fonts) you will probably see the fonts may not be embedded, or if they are you do not have them on your system. For instance, a MAC uses Helvetica and Windows uses Arial. They look similar, but are different fonts. Likely when you copy to WORD, you are having the problem that the fonts are not on your system. Why not just ask the author for the original document if you need to copy the information. You should asking anyway if you are going to use their info.

[SOLVED] Wanted: extract pdf annotations created in Mac OSX preview
I just had a collegue return a pdf marked up with "annotations".
I first struggled with finding a viewer that views the annotations, and those that could (evince, okular) all have more dependencies that I'd want/need.
I decided there must be an lighter weight way to extract the text of annotations from pdfs. I searched, read, and learned about pdf annotation formats and I figured out how to extract adobe annotations from a pdf. Only then did I realize that my collegue didn't use adobe. The annotations were created in Mac OSX's preview. Preview, it would seem, does not use the adobe xfpdf format for annotations, it uses some other means to embed the annotations.
I searched the pdf file in text and hex editors, but I couldn't find anything resembling what I knew to be in some of the annotations. However Preview does it, the text must be encoded and unreadable in the "raw" file. This is in contrast, it would seem, with adobe's annotations.
My question, then, is two-fold. First, are there any text-annotation extractor tools that can get notes created in OSX's preview? If not, does anyone know of any documentation outlining how Preview embeds this information? I've been googling the latter question, but I'll I'm getting is "where-to-click" level tutorials on how to DO annotations in Preview. I can't find any documentation of how that information is embeded into the file.
Note: evince does get the text of the annotations, but I'd prefer not to keep that installed. Evince-gtk is only every so slightly lighter on dependencies. Also, in evince I get flooded with "sticky notes" with all the annotation text. It would take a while to move those around and close them one at a time to be able to actually read them. I'm hoping to be able to extract all annotation text and dump it into a text file.

I'd love it if some volunteers would try this out, beat it up, and see what breaks first so I can improve it. After a little polishing I might put it up in the AUR.
Get the code from my dropbox here
The Ugly Patchwork Makefile and a very brief TODO list are also posted.
I'll put together a PKGBUILD once this is in better order for distribution and installation. I just got the darn thing to work, it's time to celebrate, not code more.

Issue creating a single PDF from MS Word on Mac
Using Trial Version of Acrobat XI for Mac. I am having issue creating a single PDF from MS Word on Mac. Acrobat is creating multiple files splitting up randomly. Are there any settings to select for ending up with just one PDF fil
Sabian,
As I mentioned before, I have used the following methods, each resulting the same, split up PDF file.
File>Save As - Selected PDF from under the Format dropdown menu.
File>Print>PDF - used Save As PDF
File>Print>PDF - used Save As Adobe PDF
With this information, I think I have tried all that you have asked me to do. Please let me know if I could reach out to a technical consultant or someone else who can help. Thank you. -

I have pages 09 0n my Mac Mini, but iCloud won't accept some pdf documents not created in Pages (Its says Document format not supported).
How do I get docs (pdf/jpg etc.), that are saved under "Documents" on my Mac Mini (Not in Pages), onto iCloud???
I want to transfer (None Pages) documents from the Mac Mini to my iPad 3 (Which has Pages for iPad 3).
Thanks in advance for ANY Feedback! You can download PDF files from iWork's page to a mac, but you can't upload from mac. Also, you can't use iCloud like MobileMe's iDisk. Most document formats on your mini can't be copied to iCloud. Use Dropboc instead.

Why are pdfs so much larger with Mac than a pc?
I have a MacBook Pro and I use the "save as" feature to create pdfs. These are much, much larger than when I used a pc. In fact, most times they are 2-3x the KB of the orginal document. How can I fix this?
DebbieThey arent.....you just have your settings set DIFFERENT on you MAC......I work with Acrobat PDF creation everyday...., and make pdf every day on both Mac and Windows..
.......10 scanned books created in Acrobat for creation is the same as Win Acrobat pdf creation.
Check your pdf settings, optimization settings, dpi settings (for scans)
Make sure youre saving them as the same kind of PDF, there are ....>

Looking for advice on how to share pdf files with iPad from Mac. Pages seems to only recognize text. What app is recommended for pdf documents?
Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
If I understand your question, you want to read pdfs on your iPad, not create or edit.
Drag pdf files to the iPad icon in Finder while connected to your computer via the USB cable.
They will show up in the iBooks application
(If you don't already have iBooks, it's a free download from the App Store.)
Once installed, there are two buttons at the top left of the Bookshelf.
One is Books, the other is Collections.
Tap Collections, and you'll see Books and PDFs.
Tap PDFs and you're there. -
How to sync pdf files in iBook on Mac to iBook on iPad/phone?
I used to easily move pdf files I created on my Mac to my iPad by using iTunes to sync them as books. But now books are separate from iTunes (as they
should be), and iBooks doesn't sync my pdfs to my iPad. I've done it using Dropbox as an intermediary, but this involves lots more steps... Am I missing
something? (Yes, I seem to have the sync content options enabled both on the Mac and the iOS device.)From iTunes Help Menu this worked for me
Add iBooks and audiobooks to iPod, iPhone, or iPad
You can download iBooks to your computer and use iTunes to sync them to your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad. You can also use iTunes to sync audiobooks to your iPod or iOS device.
Hide
Sync iBooks or audiobooks to your device
Connect your device to your computer and select your device in iTunes.
Click the Books button.
Do either or both of the following:
Sync iBooks: Select Sync Books, then click “All books,” or click “Selected books” and select the iBooks you want to add.
Sync audiobooks: Select Sync Audiobooks, then click “All audiobooks,” or click “Selected audiobooks” and select the audiobooks you want to add.
Click Apply. -
Unable to attach PDF to email (Outlook for Mac 2011)
We are pushing out software upgrades for CS5 and MS Office 2011 for Mac. We've discoverd that we can't use the Attach to email feature in Acrobat. The spinning rainbow wheel pops up for about a minute, and then Acrobat is non-responsive and we have to force quit. We can still drag and drop an attachment so we have a viable workaround but obviously we'd like to be able to use the automated feature.
All software is up-to-date.
In the preferences panel of Outlook, we have selected Outlook to be the default mail application.
As a sidenote, this feature doesn't work with Acobat X beta either. However, in the beta version of Acrobat X, if we declare Apple's mail application to be the default, it works fine. Unfortunately we use the Office suite as part of our enterprise system, so that's what we need to work with.
Has anyone else experienced this? I've logged a ticket with Adobe but I haven't heard back from them yet.
Thanks for any advise.Take the bhama way
figured out how to make it work. I am using Adobe Acrobat X Pro (mac)
and MS Outlook for Mac 2011.
For those who are interested, this is what I did:
1. Create a folder on desktop to save your pdf¹s files you want to email
to. Mine is named, "PDF to Email"
2. Open Automator, create a "Folder Action"
3. At the top, "Choose Folder", choose your newly created folder on the
desktop
4. Choose the "Rename Finder Items" action from the action list. I chose,
"Don¹t Add" on the add a Copy Finder Items Action menu.
5. On the "Add Date or Time to Finder Item Names" I chose, "Name Single
Item" from the first drop down menu.
6. Click on "Options" at the bottom of that window to select the "Show
this action when the workflow runs" so you can rename your file
something other than the Acrobat default.
7. Choose the "Create New Outlook Mail Message" from the action list and
add it below the "Name Single Item in Finder Item Names"
8. Choose "File>Save As" and give your file a name. Mine is, "PDF to
Email".
9. Close Automator
10. Open Acrobat X Pro.
11. Go to "File>Action Wizard>Create New Action"
12. Here you choose, "Save to>A Folder on my computer"
13. Choose the folder on the desktop that we saved earlier
14. Save the file, with the action name you will remember.
Now when you are in Acrobat X Pro and you want to send that .pdf file via
Outlook for Mac 2011, follow the steps below.
With the file you want to email open, go to "File>Action Wizard>(Action
you created) Mine is "PDF to Email". It will take a few seconds, but you
will get an "Action Completed". You will get a pop up that allows you to
name/rename the file. Then it should open your Outlook with your .pdf
attached and ready for sending.
You might need to tweak the actions to suit your needs, but this should
work for you.

It's supposed to work now? I've made sure I'm on latest (check for update)
and it says I am. Still get an error. It does bring Outlook to the
forground, but same error when I hide Outlook - An error occurred while
trying to create a mail document. Suggestions?

Combine several pdf that were created by different version of acrobat
Tried to combine several pdf that were created by different version of acrobat (i.e. 9, 10 & x). Keep getting missing letter on random pages. anyway to avoid that issue?
If it's a Mac font and you're on Windows, you can't. If you are also on a Mac, you'll need to purchase the fonts (fonts are generally non-transferable, like software. One of the reasons pdf exists), install them and try your edits.
But it's best to edit the original document and create a new pdf when finished. -
How do i transfer pdfs into iPhoto on a mac
how do i transfer pdfs into iPhoto on a mac. the pdfs are in my pictures folder but i need them to be in my iphoto
If you have pdfs with multi pages that you want to get into iPhoto here's a way to do so enmass:
Here's how to get any file (pdf) into iPhoto as a jpeg file:
1 - open the (pdf) file in any application that will open it, in this case Preview.
2 - type Command+P to start the print process.
3 - click on the PDF button and select "Save PDF to iPhoto".
NOTE: If you don't have any of those options go to Toad's Cellar and download these two files:
Save PDF to iPhoto 200 DPI.workflow.zip
Save PDF to iPhoto 300 DPI.workflow.zip
Unzip the files and place them in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder and reboot.
4 - select either of the files above (300 dip is used for photos to be included in a book that will be ordered).
5 - in the window that comes up enter an album name or select an existing album and hit the Continue button.
That will create a 200 or 300 dpi jpeg file of each page of the item being printed and import it into iPhoto.
