PDF ExportToDisk Freezes

I have some pretty straightforward code to export a report to PDF format.  This is part of a WinForm project using VB 2010.
     Private oReport As New ReportDocument()
     Private FullReportName = "Report.rpt"     ' Actual code includes path
     oReport.Load(FullReportName, OpenReportMethod.OpenReportByDefault)
     oReport.ExportToDisk(ExportFormatType.PortableDocFormat, DataFileName)
When I run this, my program just freezes on the ExportToDisk method.  What am I missing?

Do this:
oReport.ExportToDisk(ExportFormatType.PortableDocFormat, "C:\PortableDoc.pdf")
Does that work?
Looking at some sample in the developer help files:

and some actual export samples may also help:

  • Adobe Reader 9.3 PDF's freeze/hang with IE 8 Browser and Vista:  Solution Provided

    I have been using Internet Explorer 8 well for some time but I am now having repeated difficulty with Adobe Reader 9.3 because PDF's continually freeze or hang up while I am in the browser -- forcing me to close the browser completely.
    Incidentally, Resetting IE 8 to its Default settings did not help to prevent the browser from still freezing while trying to read PDF's.
    The only way I solved this problem is to uninstall Adobe Reader 9.3 completely, Restart the computer, and then install Adobe Reader 8.2.0 .  Now, I have absolutely no difficulty with PDF's freezing or hanging up.
    Adobe has simply to debug Reader 9.3 in order to make it more compatible with IE 8 and Vista.....

    What I would try if I were in your situation
    uninstall your current Adobe Reader;
    reboot Windows to make sure that all components are removed;
    download this installer http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/9.3/enu/AdbeRdr930_en_US.msi (save to disk);
    close all browser windows, then run the downloaded installer.
    If the problem reoccurs, and if no-one else in this forum has any better advice, then maybe you should try an alternate PDF reader such as Foxit Reader.  (But make sure that you don't install the bundled toolbar!)

  • Pdf's freeze using Reader in server based Mac 10.6 or 10.5

    I support several hundred iMac's for a school district. We have a site license for Adobe CS4 (and CS3). The user's accounts are server based. The programs are installed on the local computer. If I create a local account and log into that local account all functions normally. However, if I or anyone else for that matter logs in using the server based account, pdf's freeze. Also, when logged into the server, if you try to install a new version of Reader it errors looking for a disk. What the program is really looking for is the users' local account which of course doesn't exist locally because I am logged into the server. I've had Apple out to look at the server and local iMacs. They say all is functioning normally and this is a known Adobe problem. Apparently the program can't find the users account on the server. I have used a workaround with Preview and Word but that's not a solution. Any ideas?

    Thanks for the thought, Barbara B. Not sure if this counts, but emailed the file to myself [different email account, same computer] but it would not play as an email attachment. Any suggestions for a web upload where I can test your suggestion? Seems like there should be a different save option other than IMAGES ONLY but that is the only option I'm given.

  • PDF Keeps freezing

    My pdf keeps freezing when i open it. I've installed the latest version of Adobe reader and updates. What gives?

    Christina58 wrote:
    to fix the problem I had to install an old version Adobe 9.4 I noticed this is what forum chat said to do to fix it.
    You must have found a very old forum thread recommending that. Reader 9.x is no longer supported (and the last 9.x version is 9.5.5).
    My suggestion
    uninstall Reader 9.4
    install Reader XI 11.0.10
    open the newly installer Reader program | Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced), and disable Protected Mode.

  • PDF initially freezes when opening with Acrobat 9 Pro and Acrobat Reader

    Hi-
    Every time I open a pdf, either with Acrobat 9 Pro or Acrobat Reader, it freezes the application for about 10-15 seconds.  Afterwards, it's fine.
    Any suggestions?
    Im running XP Pro, 3.25GB of RAM

    Any chance you are also using Quickbooks?  I understand from Intuit that there is a known issue between  Quickbooks and Acrobat 9.  My computer does the same exact thing and I am running Quickbooks Pro 2009. Windows XP Pro 64-bit.  According to the forums on Intuit, the same problem does not exist with Acrobat 8.  So, you have to uninstall Acrobat 9 then in stall 8.  The problem is that the uninstall does not completely uninstall 9 so you can't install 8 successfully.  Apparently Adobe has an uninstaller that will remove ALL of Acrobat 9 but you have toi get it from tech Support - if you can find one that speaks English well enough to understand what the problem is and what you need. Then you need to find a copy of 8 to use.
    The problem is not in opening Acrobat.  It opens just fine.  It doesn't lock up until you open a PDF file.

  • Adobe PDF printer freezes on my Win 7 x64 with Acrobat XI

    Purchased and running Acrobat XI Standard latest update 11.0.10 on Win 7 Pro x64 (6.1.7601  Service Pack 1), a rather fresh installation (2 months).
    Adobe's conversion to PDF doesn't work when using the Adobe PDF printer. The printer initiates normally but the conversion freezes midway and no PDF is created. Same trouble in every application.
    From the Firefox Acrobat toolbar I get the error message "an error occured during PDF conversion"
    PDF conversions triggered from within Acrobat or Office 2007 toolbar do work sometimes but not always. For example, when converting a DOCX from within Acrobat (create PDF from file) the error message is "could not open...since the file format is not supported or the file is damaged" which is nonsense.
    Other Acrobat functionality seems okay.
    I already purged and reinstalled Acrobat, same result.
    Any ideas please?

    I can convert XPS to PDF, and AcroTray.exe is active and running. But the Acrobat PDF Printer still freezes at approx. 10% progress bar, see screenshot.

  • HT6114 pdf's freezing in Preview!

    I see that there is no update for Preview in the current update (10.9.2) regarding the fact that it keeps freezing randomly when reading pdf's.  Is anyone else still having this problem?

    I do like Adobe Acrobat and use it regularly but there are parts of Preview that I like a little better.  That being said, this is a new problem that Preview has, where it is freezing while scrolling through pdf's.  I've been using the same type of pdf's for years now and it is only after the Mavericks update that this freezing problem has started.

  • PDF Maker freezes

    Hi all,
    When I am creating the printed documentation, I am creating first a docx and from it, using the pdf Maker, I get a pdf.
    I do it this way because I can easily edit the document in Word before making a pdf.
    At my latest project though, I could not create a pdf from a docx because the pdf Maker would freeze. It would get very slow and then it would freeze completely.
    I call the pdf Maker the addin from Word that transforms a Word document into a pdf document.
    Did anybody else experience this problem till now?
    Are there any fixes to this?
    Thank you,
    Bogdan
    PS Sorry, I forgot to mention. I am using RH7.

    Hi Peter,
    Thank you for your answer.
    By disabled items you mean, addins?
    The Adobe addin is enabled and it starts fine, the ending is the problem as it does not for some reason.
    Something in the Word document, I guess, makes it stall. It does not give any error message or such, it just does not do anything.
    If I try closing the Word document, it says something about not responding anymore, interrupts the whole thing, and restarts Word.
    It is also asking me if I want to disable the Adobe addin to which if I make the mistake to say Yes, I will have a lot of trouble in reactivating it, as it does not want to do it so easily, so I answer No.
    If I try again, it starts normally, continues for a while (very slowly though compared to other times) and then stalls again.
    I will try to install the addin again, however I do not see anything bad in it as it has the same behaviour in RH7 (on a machine that does not have RH8 installed) and in RH8.

  • PDF servlet, freezing on save not open.

    I have a servlet that generated Reports in PDF format, the report is written to the output stream and generated as an attachment, not inline. My problem is if I choose to save the document it freezes the application, but if I open it, it's all ok. Does anyone have any idea, how to remedy this problem?

    Ok, I used this as a reference http://www.onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2003/06/18/dynamic_files.html. When the file is generated as an attachmen, the user is given the choice of opening, saving the file as if he clicked on a url to dowload file. When it's generated inline, it is opened within the browser. And I'm using IE, I'm gonna repeat the same procedure in netscape and see what goes.

  • Printing to Adobe PDF Printer freezes IE 8

    Today I was trying to print a certificate from a website where you type in your name, it generates the certficate in the web browser.  I tryed to print to my Adobe PDF printer.  The dialog box opened to prompt for the file save location/name; but this dialog box was frozen.  The URL was only active today, so I can't provide the example.  I use Windows 7 and Acrobat 9 Pro.  (9.3.0).

    That shouldn't even be possible: Standard and Pro are mutually exclusive. Not surprised it has broken.
    My recommendation
    a. Make sure you have your Standard serial numbers and install media.
    b. Uninstall the one you don't want at the moment.
    c. REPAIR the one you do want.

  • Acrobat PDF Maker freezes at 90% done when converting from Word

    ...and here's the weird thing. When I cancel, the PDF appears on my desktop, named "Microsoft Word - (filename).doc.pdf'.
    It was working fine up until a few hours ago, exporting the PDF in a few seconds, to the same file path, and with the same name, as the word file I was working with.
    what changed?

    Out of curiosity, are you running Leopard? One of my users is having a similar problem after getting a new Mac running Leopard instead of Tiger.

  • PDF icons freezing finder

    Hi
    Lately when I select a pdf icon in the finder (column view) it gives me the spinning beach ball and renders the finder frozen for around 2-3 mins before it comes back to life and shows the pdf thumbnail.
    Any ideas why this has just started happening? The pdfs aren't huge.
    Thanks

    Don't know, since I seldom, if ever use column view, but if you've selected show icon preview and show the preview column, maybe the Finder's having trouble doing that.

  • PDF export freezing

    Hello
    We have a VB6 application using RDC in CR XIR2. This application is exporting typically 10-100 invoices as a PDF. Occasionally this export is hanging and control does not return from the RDC application back to the application.
    Recently when I studied this problem at customer I noticed that this user had 75000 temporary files in the Local Settings\temp folder. 99% of those were Crystal Reports temporary files.
    I saw elsewhere in the web that these old temporary files could be an issue when printing reports with Crystal Reports but is this true?
    Our report has 3 subreports. I have used tracing and noticed that somehow based on the log printing is "interleaved", ie it looks like there are two printings going at the same time.
    Any idea what might be wrong?
    Here is the part of the log where things start to go wrong. I have compared the log from the similar printings and differenced are marked with "ODD -->" in the log file. It seems that runtime is starting something else while previous things are still going on.

    First place I'd start is ensuring that you have the latest Service Pack:
    https://smpdl.sap-ag.de/~sapidp/012002523100006255422008E/crxir2_sp4_inc.exe
    The equivalent msm is here:
    https://smpdl.sap-ag.de/~sapidp/012002523100009381702008E/crxir2sp4_rdc_mm.zip
    Next. I have used the code below to export a number of reports, with no issues. This code has been left to process a report over the weekend, creating thousands of export files. The only timne it failed, was when the system ran out of hard drive space.
    Private Sub Command1_Click()
      Dim fileName As String
      Dim i As Integer
      For i = 1 To 2000
         Dim crReport As CRAXDRT.Report
         Set crReport = crAppl.OpenReport(App.Path & "\group.rpt", crOpenReportByTempCopy)
         crReport.ExportOptions.DestinationType = crEDTDiskFile
         crReport.ExportOptions.FormatType = crEFTText
         fileName = App.Path & "\group" & i & ".txt"
         List1.AddItem "Export " & i & " " + fileName
         crReport.ExportOptions.DiskFileName = fileName
         crReport.Export False
         While crReport.PrintingStatus.Progress = crPrintingInProgress
           DoEvents
         Wend
         Set crReport = Nothing
      Next i
    End Sub
    See how that compares to the code you are using.
