Pdf file causing archive utility to throw error

I have a couple of pdf files which cannot be compressed without an error. Supposing that the nasty file is called foo.pdf.
. In the Finder, right click on foo.pdf
. Select Compress "foo.pdf"
A file called foo.pdf.zip is created but an error pops up An error occurred while compressing a file. Strangely enough, the error window has a titlebar called "Copy".
When looking in the Console, there is always an error from mdworker listed:
2/24/2009 10:23:37 /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/Metadata.framework /Versions/A/Support/mdworker[20524] zip importer countered an error (2) scanning "/Path/to/foo.pdf.zip"
This same file also always errors out when trying to use -ditto- in a Terminal window. (See this minithread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1724912 )
FWIW, attempting to open foo.pdf.zip causes the Archive Utility to throw the error
Unable to unarchive "foo.pdf.zip" into "Wherever".
Error 1 - Operation not permitted
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing the problem?
Bill

Nothing's wrong with it except that it doesn't support encrypted .zip files.  You'll just have to use third-party software, or a Terminal command, to unzip those.

    Hi Irenedix,
    If you are using Acrobat you can try the suggestions mentioned above.
    Are you using the Create PDF service from within Reader to create pdf?
    If yes then please check if you are able to login to: https://cloud.acrobat.com/convertpdf  with your Adobe ID and able to convert the document to pdf.
    If yes then within Reader you can try the following:
    Choose Edit > Preferences (Win)
    Click 'Online Services' or 'Adobe Online Services' on the left-hand side
    Sign out of your Adobe ID and sign back in.

  • Unable to open zip files with Archive Utility or StuffIt

    Hello,
    I am running Mac OS X 10.7.3.  I have been attempting to download and install the Eclipse Java IDE from both www.eclipse.org and from a Stanford course website.  In the first case the file is offered as a tar.gz and in the second case it is a .zip.  When I attempt to open either file using Archive Utility or StuffIt Expander I get a never ending pinwheel.  I am forced to restart to get Finder working porperly again and quiet the fan down.  My wife's computer, also running Mac OS X 10.7.3, can extract the files without a problem.

  • Archive Utility brings up error message when trying to unarchive protected zip file

    Hey there,
    I've been zipping images with password protection using different applications, some with a Lightroom Plug-In Zip-Exporter, some with a stand alone app such as "Archiver". Now when I try to unzip these images on OSX 10.6 the Archive Utility brings up an the error: "Unable to unarchive "Name of File" into "Desktop". (Error 1 - Operation not permitted.) I'm logged in with an admin account. I tried this on a macbook pro and on an imac, both 10.6, same problem. Now when I try to unzip the file using third party such as Stuffit expander or Archiver, it unzips the files without a problem.
    any idea what's wrong with the OSX Archive Utility?

  • Preview/QuickView of HP Scan Pro PDF Files Causes System Crash in 10.5.5

    Ever since upgrading to 10.5.5 on my iMac Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, I have been having problems with PDF files created by scanning documents using HP Scan Pro. Prior to 10.5.5, the PDFs from HP Scan Pro worked fine and behaved like any other PDF. Under 10.5.5, however, opening one in Preview or trying to view it in the Finder using QuickView causes the whole system to hang. Processor usage jumps to >100% and everything on the system becomes unresponsive. Every app causes a spinning beach ball, the Dock will not display, menus will not pull down, and I can't even call up the Force Quit dialog via the keyboard. There is nothing to be done but force-restart the system by holding down the power button.
    Looking in the system.log, it seems that ATSServer is the process that is causing this problem. A dump of the relevent log entries is at the end of the message. The "Non-aligned pointer" and "Incorrect checksum" errors just continue forever until the point when I force a reboot.
    Is anyone else experiencing this? Does anyone have knowledge of what changed in ATSServer or PDF handling in 10.5.5 that could be causing this? What is unique about the PDF files created by HP Scan Pro?
    Thanks,
    Drew

    Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread that I started. I am glad to know it's not just me having these problems.
    I have run through all the usual suggestions related to ATSServer problems and problematic fonts: I've cleared caches, checked all the fonts for broken ones, haven't installed any new ones since this problem began, etc., etc.
    I've been able to make a few more observations about the problem in my case:
    1. I don't get any crashes while using the HP Scanjet software. I can successfully create a PDF file.
    2. The problem for me only exists on PDF files that I have had HP Scanjet do OCR on and save the text with the image in the PDF. If I scan to create an image-only PDF, it does not cause a problem.
    3. I have now noticed that the problem comes not only when trying to open problem PDFs using Preview or QuickLook, but it also happens when mdsworker, the Spotlight indexer, tries to access the file for indexing. The computer then hangs. I have now had to turn off Spotlight until I can eliminate all the problem PDFs. (The problem only happens with PDFs created since the upgrade to 10.5.5. Older PDFs created with HP Scanjet that were in the Spotlight index earlier do not cause problems.)
    4. These problem PDFs will open correctly in Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader if Spotlight is off, but if Spotlight is on opening the file causes it to be indexed and the system hangs.
    In Googling for solutions, I've found that people have sometimes been having problems with interaction between ATSServer and mdsworker since as far back as 10.2.x:

  • Download PDF File from Archiv to SAP Application Server

    Hi,
    I need to download the PDF file from an NAST-Dataset (how is stored from the message via SAP ArchivLink) to the SAP Application Server.
    1) At first i read the Archiv-Link data via function module WFMC_GET_ARCHIVE_OBJECT_TYPE
    2) Then i get the Connection-Infos via function module ARCHIV_GET_CONNECTIONS_INT
    3) Now i read the file from archiv as table via function module ARCHIVOBJECT_GET_BYTES
    4) Save to the SAP Appl.Server via:
       - OPEN DATASET ld_dpfad FOR OUTPUT IN BINARY MODE
       - LOOP and TRANSFER lf_archivobject TO ld_dpfad.
       - CLOSE DATASET ld_dpfad.
    In the dialog of NAST-Dataset (Messages) i can open the PDF-File without any errors (display originals). But after the filetransfer to the SAP Appl.Server i get the following errors during the file opening dialog from Adobe Acrobat Reader:
    - the embedded font u201CArialu201D cant to be extract
    - not enough data for the picture
    The reader can display the PDF-File but only without the picture (Logo) and with alternative font.
    The same transfer from archiv and sending as an attachement to the BOR-Object via function module SO_DOCUMENT_INSERT_API1 works very fine and without any errors.
    Can any one please help me to solve this Issue?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Thomas

    Hello Keith,
    Many thanks for your answer.
    In the past i didnu2019t need the BINARCHIVOBJECT-Parameter and so i overlook this option.
    Now, the File looks a little bit different, but only in the STREAM-section.
    During the Fileopen-Dialog i get only one message now - "not enough data for image" and the image will not displayed. The rest seems to be correct.
    The relevant coding is now:
      ld_doc_typ = pf_connections-reserve.
      CALL FUNCTION 'ARCHIVOBJECT_GET_BYTES'
        EXPORTING
          archiv_id                = pf_connections-archiv_id
          archiv_doc_id            = pf_connections-arc_doc_id
          document_type            = ld_doc_typ
          length                   = ld_length1
          offset                   = ld_offset
        IMPORTING
          binlength                = ld_length
          offset                   = ld_offset
        TABLES
          binarchivobject          = lt_binarchivobj
        EXCEPTIONS
          error_archiv             = 1
          error_communicationtable = 2
          error_kernel             = 3
          OTHERS                   = 4.
    Zieldatei zum Schreiben öffnen
        OPEN DATASET ld_dpfad FOR OUTPUT IN BINARY MODE.
    Inhalte in Zieldatei schreiben
      LOOP AT lt_binarchivobj INTO lf_binarchivobj.
        TRANSFER lf_binarchivobj TO ld_dpfad NO END OF LINE.
      ENDLOOP.
    Zieldatei schließen
      CLOSE DATASET ld_dpfad.
    Where is the error for the image data?

  • Sticky Notes in a pdf file cause ie7 crashed.

    This is a very interesting bug.
    System version: Windows XP with SP3
    Adobe Reader Version: 9
    IE version: IE 7
    Files needed for testing:
    a pdf file (note.pdf) with Sticky Note displayed.
    a html file (note.html) which has a url link to note.pdf
    Action which causes the crash:
    1.       Open note.html in a new IE window
    2.       Click the link to open the note.pdf in a new window or a new tab, then close it
    3.       Click AGAIN the link to open the note.pdf in a new window or a new tab, then close it
    Then you could see the error window popup, the ie7 browser crashed. This has been tested in 3 PCs.
    Check the Error Event, it said:

    Download the file to your local disk, then open and print it from there.

  • Searching Safari pdf File Caused Crash

    After installing OS X 10.5, whenever I tried to search a page in Safari that was pdf format it would crash. I tried all kinds of things to defeat the problem, trying several posted here, but to no avail. Finally my son, who is a software engineer, came up with the best idea: get rid of Adobe Reader and all of its Plug-ins. Voilla! no more problems and Preview is much nicer to work with. So that is what I recommend.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    Apple does not respond to submitted crash reports. Rather, they are used for software development purposes. Best thing to do in this forum is to copy/paste a copy of the entire report to your reply in this thread.
    If you see a relationship between the Adobe crashes and Safari opening a PDF file, then go to Adobe Acrobats preference file>Internet and designate Apple's "Preview" as your PDF reader. Then, go to the Finder and move to your desktop your Adobe Reader plug-in from your Internet Plug-ins folder either the main or user library). Restart Safari and try a PDF (it ought to now open within the browser). If Safari does not crash, then yes, the problem lies with Adobe. Something you can take up in one of Adobe's own forums.

  • Linked PDF files cause Safari to crash

    OsX 10.4.10 / Acrobat Professional 7...
    When I click on a link in a web page that is a link to a PDF file, Acrobat 7 automatically starts up and then it and Safari crash once the Acrobat splash screen has run through its process.
    Sometimes I am unaware that a link is to a PDF file so I cannot prevent this from happening by right/ctrl clicking to download the linked file.
    I would like Safari set so it does not try to load PDF's within the browser (I'm assuming that's what's going on). I have checked the prefs. in Acrobat but they appear to be set so that it doesn't try to launch linked PDF's within Safari.
    I did not have this problem when I was running OsX 10.3.9 not so long ago.
    Any tips on how to fix/stop this from happening?
    Christo

    Does that mean Preview will open a PDF within Safari or does Safari automatically download the PDF first?
    I would rather just download PDF's, when required, to view later.
    Yes, that would open the PDF in Safari via Preview. If you want to skip Safari altogether, here's one suggestion for doing so. You'll need to use Terminal found in your Utilities folder.

  • Repeated retrieval and parsing of XML file causes IE to display an error message

    I have a flash application that makes a HTTP call every 120
    seconds to retrieve a xml file. This file is being generated with
    fresh data every few minutes or so and pushed to the apache web
    root with a unix mv command.
    I'm using the standard Flash XML object. The HTTP request is
    NOT over SSL (I know there is a bug related to this). Here is the
    code to make the retrieval:
    xmlData = null;
    xmlData = new XML();
    xmlData.ignoreWhite = true;
    xmlData.onLoad = xmlTraverse;
    xmlData.load("
    http://domain/dir/somefile.xml");
    The "xmlTraverse" method was written by my team. There is no
    known bug in the parsing logic.
    Intermittently and unpredictably, IE will display the
    following dialogue box:
    "A script in this movie is causing Macromedia Flash Player 8
    to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer may become
    unresponive. Do you want to abort the script?"
    I originally leaned toward an infinite loop causing this
    problem. The timeline jumps back and forth between two frames,
    checking in the latter frame if the xml has been loaded and parsed
    before allowing execution to move to the next frame. I hardcoded
    the loop check to always be false, but this did not produce the
    message above (although it pegged my CPU).
    The only scenario where I've managed to reproduce the message
    above is by making a huge (50 MB) xml file. This consistently
    produces the message. But I don't realistically see how our xml
    file could ever be over 1 MB.
    First, can anyone cite another cause for this message? I'm
    starting to lean towards the issue lying in our parsing logic such
    as infinite recursion on a badly formed XML file. Second, does
    anyone know of a solid xml SAX parsing actionscript utility where
    you can assign callbacks to XML nodes? If the problem is in the
    parsing, we may have to replace our homegrown solution with
    something more robust and proven.

    Is it a recursive parsing function? I'm not sure about this,
    but I think this message pops up when there are more than 256
    iterations in a loop (I've read something about this 256 limit,
    that will end while loops if they exceed this, but with another
    error message... but again, I'm not totally sure about that).
    The message is typically for loops, but I don't know when it
    fires. Sometimes it appears for really 'small' loops when you're
    using the debugger (e.g. a for loop with 100 iterations), so maybe
    it is connected to the time a loop is running. You could place some
    trace statements in the xmlTraverse method, to see where the
    function was when the message occurs, or take the time the function
    needs and check if this might be related to the error.
    That's all I can come up with, guess there are people here
    with more insight to this...
    cheers,
