PDF-layers flattened in Illu CS2

Hi,
just tried autodesks new pdf printer that produces pdf-layers from my drawing's layers. Everything fine in acrobat: all layers listed in the layer panel. Yay. It even works in indesign, so now information can be filtered in some presentations.
But when opened in illustrator (or photoshop) the file only has one layer. The output pdf version is 1.4 (Acrobat 5) and seems to be locked to that version. The layers visible in Acrobat won't work even if the file is saved as a later format.
So how do I make Illustrator "get" the layers? It would be really nice to be able to work with layers intact from cad drawings.
Anyone has an answer for this?
Thanks/
Peter
ps. The printer name used in Autocad 2010 and bonuspack 2 for 2009 is pdfplo9.hdi. It supports line merge and seem to output ttf-text as text, not outlines, supports autocad gradients (if you ever use that in drawings) and so on.

Thanks Mylenium,
this gives at least some background to the problem... I've noticed that there is the term "Arcobat-Layers" in both illustrator and indesign, not just "layers". Anyone know if there is a way to redefine/redistribute these tagged object groups to layers in illustrator?
/Peter

  • How to Edit or PDF Multiple Page Tiles in CS2 doc while working in CS4?

I have to resave this file as CS2, so I need to be able to edit and PDF original Page Tiles from CS2, not convert to Artboards. There is no Edit Page tiles, only View Page Tiles. When I go to save as PDF, there is no "multiple pages" option under General as stated elsewhere, and it PDF's as one huge "artboard" even though there are multiple page "tiles". Thanks in advance!

If you want to save an editable Illustrator file for CS2 then you save as .ai not as .pdf.
You can still Show Print Tiling in the View menu. Use the Print dialogue to set up the paper size, orientation, and tiling options, then click Done.

  • Should pdf layers work on AdobeReader for Android?

AdobeReader for Android: Do pdf-layers function?
I can´t get the layers to work, I can´t even find the symbol for the layers.
We have a large amount of layered pdf files, often combined to pdf packages, that we would like to send to our partners. There has been problems with the packages when using Linux but we have solved them by breaking down the packages into individual files. After that layers etc. have been working OK.
Now the problem comes with the android tablets. Packages work OK, but the layers don´t seem to work. Is there a solutions somwhere, or is it just a question of waiting for a newer version of the Reader and hoping that our customers remain patient ?

In the meantime, is this requested feature on the roadmap already?
I really need this feature. The use case in my situation is that a field engineer should be able select and deselect layers of building schematics on their tablet while working on site.
Thanks for your answer in advance!

  • Print PDF without flatten?

    Dear All,
I am trying to print a xdp file.
And as far as I know, below is the step I require to do.
    1) Convert XDP to PDF
    2) Flatten PDF
    3) Convert to PostScript
    4) Send to print with service "sendToPrinter"
But I hit a problem that dynamic form will not look the same after flatten.
For example, if my form have 2 format difference sex, and I implement by hidden the unwanted field by script, I will find that all field are visible after flatten.
So, I would like to know if it is possible to print without flatten the form at all?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Bill

You mean the discoloration? That would be PDF tiles and how your printer handles them. In that case you may need to experiment a little with teh PDF settings and also check the color separations in Acrobat. this might reveal some of that stuff to show up on teh wrong ink plates/ not show up and would explain it. Could even be some faint semi-transparent objects you have in your artwork and you have forgotten about tehm. And naturally, your friend should check his local printer settings as well. If he e.g. has a USB printer, the print job may be sent in unfavorable chunks, which then would require him/ her to tweak his settings so the job only starts printing when fully spooled and being sent as one continuous job...

  • PDF Layers to Illustrator layers

    Hi,
Is it possible to open a PDF file with layers in AI and preserve the PDF layers as layers in AI?
Is it possible to do the other way round too?
Export an AI file with layers as PDF and preserve the layer structure?
    Thanks,
    Priya

Because Illustrator is not a pdf editor you won't be able to open a pdf with his layers preserved without a extra plugin, Esko has a plugin that supports this and more.
Is you save a pdf as at least a 1.5 out off Illustrator, the Illustrator layers will be in the pdf.

  • Maintain PDF layering when opening in older version of Illustrator?

As the title explains, I was wondering if it may be possible to avoid data loss upon opening a PDF in an older version of Illustrator. I have a client who is still using CS5, and needs to have editable PDF files that maintain their hierarchy.
Currently standing, I get the "This file was generated by a newer version of Illustrator" error, which flattens the artwork into a single layer. Is there a workaround for this, or am I out of luck?
Thank you in advanced for your help.

Have you tried saving as CS5. There's a drop-down menu for choosing a version. It will still flatten some things that are not available in the older version, but you may have better luck keeping the layers intact that way.

  • Help with importing .pdf's - flattening

    Hello folks,
I just upgraded to Win7 and did a complete reinstall.
I have CS2 that is working fine, however, when I place a .pdf, it automatically flattens.  Many customers send .pdf's that I place into a template, however, sometimes flattening will cause lost font attributes.  Prior to the upgrade to Win7, I could plad a .pdf and it was intact, unless I "wanted" to flatten.
I've tried everything in preferences to no avail.  What do I need to do?
Your help would be highly appreciated.

The trial version of InDesign certainly does not have any features disabled. You should be able to place pages from a PDF file into an InDesign document.
File=>Place or Ctrl-D should yield a file dialog for you to select a file to place. Of course, you must already have opened an existing file or created a new file.

  • PDF Layers lost while importing to Illustrator

We are using Adobe PDF Library to create PDF documents.
The layers created are visible from Acrobat Viewer.
However the original layers in PDF are not maintained while importing the PDF in Illustrator (CS2 and CS3). Is this not supported? If not any chance this will be supported in future versions of Illustrator?

Sorry, bad choice of words there from my side.
I have a Tab interactivity in SWF fomat. The framework of this is created in Flash in which we are calling the content from XML file. Here is the screenshot of the SWF when the XML file is missing:
Now, when I place the XML file in the required folder, it looks like this:
In your case, you place the Captivate file which is not dependent on other files. That is why you get it right. It is something like inserting an image.

  • Pixel shift in PDF after flattening

    Hi,
I made this post some time ago in the Illustrator forum, but it's most likely an Acrobat issue. Here's the link. Perhaps it can be picked up or moved here by admins.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1383150?tstart=0
    Thanks.

My recomendation of layers was intended for Illustrator layers.
Yes, PDF 1.5 will retain the layers
I'm not an expert, but feel compelled to ask -
Why do you want to flatten within pdf? Spend enough time here and you will take note that Adobe recommends keeping transparency live as long as possible - until print
You printed within Acrobat to pdf to 1.3 - Yep, it was going to flatten, yep yep, no surprise.
I was ablo to replicate your steps (using InDesign for live transparency) producing an output with stitching (Export > 1.3) and without (Export > High Quality)
To test Acrobats internal flattening, rather than Print to PDF I used to Preflight Fixup to flatten, compatability 1.3. Stitching lines occured. I don't think you can work around such.

  • Layers (pdf layers to illustrator layers)

I currently am using Acrobat 7.0 Professional and Illustrator CS2, the pdf has 3 layers and I'm trying to open the file in Illustrator and retain the layers, but when I open the file it converts to one layer.  Do you know how to retain the layers when importing into Illustrator CS2?
    Vicky

Unless the PDF was saved with Illustrator Editing Capabilities turned on, it is not possible for you to recover the layers. In Acrobat the layers are called something else (Optional Content Groups-although they correspond to AI layers) and are not readable in AI. You will probably have reconstruct the layers.

  • PDF layers not visible & won't print

I have a PDF that was sent to me that is comprised of 2 layers.  When I open the PDF in 9.0 Pro, both layers flash on the screen momentarily and then Layer1 disappears and only Layer2 is visible.  If I turn off visibility of Layer2, Layer1 appears.  If I turn on visibility of Layer2, Layer1 disappers.
Then, when I try to print, only Layer2 will print.  I have to configure Layer2 to "never print" in order to get Layer1 to print.  I have tried to "merge" layers, but that doesn't seem to work.  I have tried to "flatten" layers, but Acrobat just seems to freeze.
Only when I click on Advanced > Print Production > Output Preview and have the "Simulate Overprinting" checked does the PDF appear as it should.  However, it won't print that way.  Any ideas on how to get BOTH layers visible at the same time AND able to print?

After posting I kept researching and found the following:
If a PDF has been created with overprinting you must do two things to get the PDF to display properly and print.
Enable Overprint Preview: Edit > Preferences > Page Display - Change "Use Overprint Preview" to "Always".  This will force the PDF to show everything.  You can turn the feature back off later if you wish.
Enable Overprint Printing: File > Print - Click on Advanced button - Click on "Output" - Place a check in the box "Simulate Overprinting".  The PDF should print as it displays on the screen.

  • Illustrator files opening with all layers flattened into 1.

    http://tinypic.com/r/afhcg5/5
This image is directly from a customer’s email. An Illustrator template for custom candy bags is sent to the customer and has about 10 layers on it.  Somehow they always come back as Layer 1, flattened.  I am opening them up in CS5. Can anyone advise on why a multi layered file constantly comes back from our customers as a single layer? Having all layers is very important for these bags to print properly. Any help would be appreciated!

Yes, we are sending a layered .PDF that was created from an .AI file.  We are also sending the .AI file as well.  I am trying to save the .AI file back to CS3 so our customers can open the files.
We are not zipping anything though, and we are not requiring our customers to zip anything back either.  We are going to start doing this....

  • Is it possible for illustrator (cs5 or later) to open/maintain original PDF layers?

I want to edit a map that I found on the USGS.gov website.  From that site, I've downloaded a PDF file which is organized into a few layers.  Of course when I open it, illustrator has all the content grouped together and on one layer.
I am a long time user, but some of the program details evade me.  I just want to know once and for all... is this just impossible?, or is there a way to work around this?
*One other thing I've considered but haven't tried yet, is to export or re-save each layer as its own individual PDF.  Then maybe I can open each one in illustrator and reassemble the map from there.
**Here is a link to the map, if anyone wants to download it and experiment.

    Best,
    Alex

The real issue here is that of editability of general PDF files in Adobe Illustrator.
The fact is that Adobe Illustrator is not, repeat not, repeat one more time not a general purpose editor of PDF files, popular beliefs and perceptions not withstanding. The only PDF files that can fully and properly be edited by Adobe Illustrator are PDF files that were originally saved from Adobe Illustrator using the save editability option when created and if the PDF file has not been subsequently modified by any other software. In that case and that case alone, Illustrator “opens” and allows editing of the PDF file but instead of using the PDF constructs, uses “private data” that Illustrator itself put into the file at creation time describing the original .ai Illustrator content, styles, layers, etc.
In all other cases, Illustrator attempts to open the PDF file and convert it into an Illustrator file, but since Illustrator's imaging model is a subset of the full PDF imaging model, you can expect possible content loss or modification, color space changes (Illustrator only supports either CMYK and gray or RGB in an Illustrator file), and text re-encoding. Note that in all cases, Illustrator never uses the fonts embedded in the PDF file, but in fact requires the fonts referenced in an Illustrator file (including PDF converted to Illustrator format)  to be installed on the system itself; thus font substitutions are possible. Layers from a non-Illustrator PDF file are not preserved upon opening such a file in Illustrator.
Thus, to address your particular scenario, unless the map you downloaded in PDF format from the usgs.gov website is a PDF saved from Adobe Illustrator using the save editability option, you cannot access the layers in Illustrator. Furthermore, ignoring the layers issue, you may find the rest of your editing PDF in Illustrator experience somewhat lacking.

  • Save dynamic PDF as flattened or read only

I finished filling a form, which is a dynamic PDF. Now that I'm done filling it out, I want to save it as a regular PDF, where the fields cannot be edited, and anyone can open it without needing a special version of adobe (basically just a regular PDF viewer), since it's easier to email, and anyone can open it without a problem. Can this be done?
I have a MacBook Pro, with Yosemite OS.
    Thanks guys

Do you understand what "flattening" a PDF does?
It converts fields and annotations content into the context of the PDF and removes the form fields and annotations and they cannot be recovered to their original objects.
I would look at making the fields read only and using a digital signature to disclose if the PDF has been changed after the signature has been applied.
