Pdf plugin browser recommendation

I cannot get my browsers (whether Safari or Firefox) to handle pdf files reliably.  In Firefox, some pdf downloads refuse to open, saying I don't have permission, although the same pdfs from the same website open seamlessly in Safari.  On the other hand, some sites (for example, Quickbooks online) open some but not all pdfs in Safari (for example, ivnioces will open, but not statements).  As a result, I find myself needing to hop back and forth between browsers depending on which website I am using, or even which task I am trying to accomplish at a given website.
Does any have a "best practices" recommendation for the most reliable current browser and pdf plugin choices?

See if the help page linked below or anything linked via that page has anything to offer to resolve the matter:

  • Problem with opening pdf in browser

    Hello
    Acrobat X Pro 10.0.0.396 was installed on PC with Adobe Reader 9 (tried with Reader 10). When I open pdf documents from browser IE 8 or FireFox 3.5 i cann't see Tools panel and buttons from quick area (only Comments and Share).
    plugin in browser - Adobe Acrobat 10.0.0.396 but i think document opens with plugin from Reader. But i deleted it from PC
    thank you in advance

    Each user would have to set each browser individually.
    Note: I don't think it's possible to set the default PDF viewer with code for every user who visits the site.
    See the following link to enable Adobe Reader as the default PDF viewer in different browsers:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/display-pdf-browser-acrobat-xi.html
    Note: Not all PDF viewer browser plug-ins support PDF submissions, and most 3rd party viewers may not support forms created with LiveCycle or forms with Extended Reader Rights enabled.

    I thought I had the Foxit Reader Plug-In reinstalled since I installed FF5, but I've reinstalled it again anyway and reset it to open in Firefox under Tools Options. Once I was happy with the latest Foxit Reader I really didn't want to even try the dead-buried-and-decomposed Adobe Acrobat again. I've disabled that now as it wasn't opening pdfs in Firefox either when I had it selected under Tools Options.

    These are the steps I performed on my own system many months ago. I could not view PDF files in Firefox with both Adobe Reader and Foxit installed.
    #Close Firefox (File > Exit '''''OR''''' Firefox button > Exit)
    #If you have not already done so, uninstall Adobe Reader 9.4.5 using Windows Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs, click on the item, click Remove. You may need to restart your system.
    #Open Foxit in your programs list Windows Start > Programs
    #*on the Foxit menu, click Tools > Preferences
    #*click File Associations and be sure "Display PDF in browser" is checked then click "Make Default PDF Viewer" then click OK
    #*close Foxit Reader (File > Exit)
    #Start Firefox
    #*Open the Applications panel (Tools > Options > Applications '''''OR''''' Firefox button > Options > Options > Applications)
    #*type '''pdf''' in the search box; you should see "Foxit Reader PDF document"
    #*in Action column, click the down arrow at the far right end
    #*choose "Use Foxit Reader plugin for Mozilla (in Firefox)'
    #**if the full name does not display, place the cursor over the item to see the full name in a tooltip box
    #Test on a pdf file from the internet
    #*If there is no toolbar at the top of the PDF display in the tab (just a blue strip), tap the F8 key to get the Basic toolbar, or right-click the blue strip at the top to display/not display other toolbars by clicking on them (checked=display; un-checked=do not display)

  • Todays update to 7.1.0 broke "Display PDF in browser"

    I do ***NOT*** want PDFs displayed in my browser.
    I ***DO*** want PDFs displayed in a separate Acrobat window.
    Version 7.0.9 was working this way until the update to 7.1.0 went in today.
    Now, regardless of the of the setting of the Edit --> Preferences --> Internet --> Web Browser Options --> "Display PDF in browser" checkbox, all PDFs ARE being displayed in the browser window.
    How do I disable this behavior or uninstall this last update?

    I have managed to fix my problem with PDFs only opening in the browser. I went to MSIE(v7) Menu --> Tools --> Manage Add-Ons --> Enable or Disable Add-Ons... --> Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer --> [find/highlight the line with file = AcroIEHelper.dll] --> Disable --> OK --> Restart the browser (and maybe the PC).
    As for 7.1.0 not being a real update, that is wrong. It is real.
    Read about it here:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb08-13.html
    It says:
    "Adobe recommends users of Acrobat 8 and Adobe Reader install the 8.1.2 update and users of Acrobat 7 install the 7.1.0 update to protect themselves from potential vulnerabilities. This is an update to resolve the issues previously reported in Security Advisory APSA08-01."

  • Safari won't display pdf in browser and I do not have adobe reader or ply ins

    I've been checking the posts and all the discussions/questions and answers but the only thing I have been able to find about problems displaying pdfs in browser have to do with adobe plug-ins. I never had adobe reader and checked in /library/internet plug ins and never found those plug ins. I then downloaded and installed adobe reader X and got rid of the plug ins in the library and that still has not solved the problem. Whenever I click on a link for a pdf it just automatically downloads the pdf. I just want to view the pdfs in the browser.
    Thanks for the help

    Hi,
    You probably won't have to reinstall Safari. Two things you can try. If you open Adobe Reader and go into the 'Internet' section of its preferences, you should be able to disable the browser plug-in. Some times that alone isn't enough, in which case, browse to HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/ and move the Adobe plugin out of the folder. Restart Safari for the changes to take effect.

  • Trouble Setting "Display PDF in browser using" by MCX

    I want to force the PDF viewer in Safari to Mac OS X v10.6 built-in Preview Application instead of Adobe Acrobat Pro (9.4.0).
    I found that unchecking "Display PDF in browser using:" in Acrobat's Preferences, sets the viewer in Safari to Preview. It seems unchecking this box modifies ~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.Acrobat.Pro_x86_9.0.plist. by creating the entry root => Originals (dictionary) => BrowserIntegration (array) => item 0 as number with value 0, item 1 as boolean with value 0.
    With that in mind I tried creating a MCX setting in my OD to apply root => Originals (dictionary) => BrowserIntegration (array) => item 0 as number with value 0, item 1 as boolean with value 0. Witch resulted in a grayed out, but checked settings for  "Display PDF in browser using:"
    I was wondering if any one has successfully figured out how to set this setting?

    Hi,
    Firstly during the installation of Reader X, there is an option of Customize Install. You can uncheck the Safari browser plugin from there. But this was possible before install. Now since you have installed in default mode (with above option checked during install) the method to disable plugin is as follows:
    To disable the plugin-
    1. Go to Library > Internet Plug-Ins
    2. You will see AdobePDFViewer.plugin in the list of plugins
    3. Create a new folder called Disabled Plug-Ins
    4. Move the AdobePDFViewer plugin into the Disabled Plug-Ins folder
    5. Restart  Safari
    In future if you want to re-enable this then you can put this plugin back to its original location or Reinstall Reader X (if you have permanently deleted the plug-in from your system). Reinstallation works as installing in repair mode.
    AcrobatX/ReaderX uses MANAGED installation method on Mac(as compared to MANUAL installation method used in earlier versions). In case of manual installation method installation and repair was dependent on "Self heal" mechanism that required the admin privileges each time it was invoked. This raised a bit of concern so to remove this Adobe now uses Managed installation method and discontinued Self Heal mechanism.

  • Can't uncheck 'display PDF in browser using' on mac

    Reader 10.0.0
    'display PDF in browser using' in the Internet preferences is stuck on to Adobe Reader. The checkbox is checked/disabled, and cannot be unchecked.
    Also, viewing a PDF in the browser via FTP sticks the entire browser (hence my reason for noticing/disabling this plugin)
    Had to remove the plugin file from file:///Library/Internet%20Plug-Ins/ to remove.

  • Viewing pdf in browser window

    I know this problem has been addressed in NUMEROUS other threads, but I've read through at least 20 of them now, including threads elsewhere on the web, and NONE of them solve my problems. Neither Safari 3.1.2 or Firefox 3.0.1 will open pdfs within a browser window on my machine (OS 10.4.11, PowerBook G4, pre-Intel chip). I have Adobe Reader 9.0.0 installed, but both the "display pdf in browser using" and "allow fast web view" options are turned off. I have also removed any Adobe pdf plugins from my user/Library/Internet Plug-Ins and /Library/Internet Plug-Ins folders. In an attempt to get things to work, I downloaded and installed PDF Browser Plugin 2.2.3. This plugin is in both folders, and both browsers recognize that the plugin is installed. But both still insist on opening pdf through Adobe Reader. I can get both browsers to open pdfs using the plugin if I use the "open with" option on a pdf and request either Safari or Firefox. In these cases, the pdf will open seemlessly within the browser window. But any time I try to open a pdf through a website, Safari immediately saves to disk and Firefox asks me what I want to do with it (save or open in Reader). There's kind of a workaround in Firefox: if I specify that pdfs be opened by Firefox instead of Reader, they will open automatically in Firefox when I click on them, but they actually get downloaded to my desktop and then opened in a new browser window, so they're not really being opened within the browser--and my desktop ends up cluttered with pdfs that I don't want.
    I'm at the end of my rope here, so if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate hearing them.
    Thanks,
    jd

    First off, thanks for the help. It appears that things are working now, for the most part--the odd behavior was specific to the particular online pdf file that I happened to be using to test things. I wasn't control clicking on that one, and it still insisted on downloading. But all other pdfs appear to behave normally. Which really does solve my problem, since the right-click option in Safari to "view in Preview" gives me all the functionality that I get with Reader, only quicker.
    But just to convince you I'm not crazy for expecting pdf-viewing menus in my browser window, this is from Safari Help:
    "When you click a link for a PDF file, Safari displays it in your browser window and provides a toolbar to help you view the file... To view the toolbar, put the mouse pointer in the middle of the PDF page, near the bottom. If you move the pointer away from the toolbar, it disappears after a moment. The toolbar has four icons. Point to each icon to see a label."
    I don't get the toolbar. I still have some control through the ctrl-click menu, but no toolbar. The same goes for the google pdf browser plugin. This is from Schubert IT:
    "The Schubert|it PDF Browser Plugin perfectly integrates into your web browser and with its great Mac look & feel it looks like it always belonged into it. Easy to use and intuitive toolbar buttons give you quick access to the most common features, and a standard Action menu lets you access everything else – even while the toolbar is hidden in cases when you need the maximum screen real estate."
    I can't find the toolbar anywhere.
    As for OSX being superior to Windows in every regard, I am pretty much inclined to agree with you. Generally Mac deals with pdfs much more smoothly, which is why I was frustrated with my problem. I still think that the Windows browsers play better with Adobe Reader--the integration of Reader into the browser window seems pretty nice on my PC at work. But I'm happy with the solution you've given me, and I'll stay away from Reader in the future. And once I realize how much better life is without Reader, I'll have yet another reason to hate going to work.

  • Acrobat Pro 8.2.0 can't open pdfs in browser

    We just upgraded all our PCs (XP SP3) to IE8 and
    now I have one machine that will not open pdfs from the browser. I've tried uninstalling acrobat and tried reloading it but no luck. The thing is, when I open Acrobat and go to Edit > Preferences > Internet, the "display pdf in browser" option is greyed out. There is no way to select it.
    Thanks,
    Wayne

    Remove the plugin from HD>Library>Internet Plugins.

  • PDF plugin problem

    Hello everyone,
    a customer of us is having problems displaying PDF forms in Workspace ES. They are using IE7 with Reader 9.2. Reader is the standard application for PDF files, the "Display PDFs in browser" option has been set, but Workspace is still displaying the "You must install Adobe Reader to view this form" message. It also doesn't work if Reader is open in the background during the process.
    What can be the reason for this? What can be checked to find out the reason why this problem is persisting? Maybe somebody knows what triggers this message box?
    Thank you for any help,
    Steffen.

    Hi John,
    as it turned out, there is a setting in IE where you can enable/disable ActiveX plugins. I do NOT refer to the overall ActiveX settings, but the "Manage AddOns" option in the settings dialog. There, each specific addon can be disabled/enabled separately. With some versions of Reader 9 there seemed to be a problem that (for unknown reasons) the Reader plugin was in a disabled state. Maybe you can check that?
    Regards,
    Steffen.

  • Bookmarks sidebar cover Flash player and PDF plugin when active.

    This problem is present in FF 5 - 6 - 7.
    When i leave the Bokmarks sidebar active in my FF a blank square flickering on flash player like youtube videos and on pdf documents opened with PDF plugin.
    This square appear and disappear when i move the mouse over this, or the problem go back when i close the bookmarks sidebar.
    [http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/822/20110930154105.jpg/ Screenshot captured on PDF documents]

    Ok, I tried to download the firefox browser but IE wouldn't let me download it.  My friend downloaded it from their computer to a flash drive and I loaded it to my computer from the flash drive.  The download of Firefox from the flash drive worked, and now I'm using Firefox & both my adobe flash player and my adobe reader are working just great.
    However, neither the flash player nor the reader are working if I use IE, so I guess I will just have to use Firefox as my browser.
    I'm going to mark my question as answered since I really don't care that I have to use Firefox instead of IE,although I can't understand why it works using Firefox but not using IE.
    Thank you so much for your assistance in walking me step-by-step through this problem until I was able to reach a satisfactory solution.

  • PDF plugin on Mac

    The "official" (or at least, recommended by your FAQ) PDF plugin on Mac isn't supported on FF4 (well, you can compile it to be ran on FF4, but it needs to be ran in 32 bit). Since development on this plugin has stalled, what will you do about it? Chrome has a built-in plugin, and since Core Image provides support for PDF reading, it wouldn't be that hard to implement either... (please note that I have no coding knowledge, so I work on that, but I'd love to :) )
    For the record, I uninstalled it since it wasn't supported and I now use Preview to open PDFs. But it's very annoying.

    The following link may help, it has a version of the add-on that works in 32 bit mode - http://code.google.com/p/firefox-mac-pdf/issues/detail?id=189

  • PDFs/plugin ceased working in Safari

    Hi! Safari doesn't wanna display PDFs directly in the browser window any more. Some PDFs open, but use the Adobe Acrobat plugin rather than Schubertit's PDF plugin (which is set as the default and the Adobe plugin is actually disabled, at least that's what I see in the Acrobat preferences). Other PDFs don't open at all any more. Safari opens a new page when I click a link to a PDF and pretends it's opening it (progress bar and rotating little wheel), but the page stays just white when it's done. The PDF plugin used to work fine until recently. I'm not sure if a recent security update or the Safari update 2.0.1 broke it, but it started misbehaving at around the same time. Anybody else with a similar issue? Any fixes? Camino opens the same PDFs perfectly fine using PDF plugin.

    William,
    There is at least one other thread about this problem, which I also have as of 2.0.1, but I haven't done the latest security update or new iTunes 5 or java, etc., so I'm pretty sure it's a safari issue. Nothing that involves audio streaming (maybe video content also) works, including Flash. I've tried everything here short of re-installing Safari 2.0 (trying to figure out how to do that right now) or totally re-installing the OS, which I just did last month. I've stripped out all CMs, Prefs, Bundles, Startup Items and run all the normal maint routines, with no help.
    Retrospect is also crashing now, out of the blue, so I can't even get to my older version of Safari on there. :/
    I really hope someone figures this out. Here's what my crash reporter says:

  • Servlet not streaming PDF to browser properly

    Hello,
    I have a servlet that is processing file uploads and streams the file upload to a browser. All works fine, except that for some reason the browser has it's own mind as to whether or not to load the PDF plugin. Word, excel, text, these files are 100% reliable. However, PDFs sometimes display, other times I get nothing in the browser window. No errors are logged in JBOSS/Apache. Here's a look at my code:
    package com.iw.web;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.io.PrintWriter;
    import javax.servlet.*;
    import javax.servlet.http.*;
    import org.apache.commons.fileupload.*;
    public class FilePreview extends HttpServlet {
         public FilePreview() {
              super();
         public void destroy() {
              super.destroy(); // Just puts "destroy" string in log
              // Put your code here
         public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response)
                   throws ServletException, IOException {
              boolean isMultipart = FileUpload.isMultipartContent(request);
              DiskFileUpload fu = null;
              fu = new DiskFileUpload();
              if(isMultipart)
                   try
                        List fileItems = fu.parseRequest(request);
                        Iterator it = fileItems.iterator();
                   while(it.hasNext())
                        //org.apache.commons.fileupload.
                        FileItem fi = (FileItem)it.next();
                        if (!fi.isFormField())
                             String contentType = fi.getContentType();
                        byte[] data = fi.get();
                             File file = new File(fi.getName());
                             response.setHeader("Content-disposition","filename=" + file.getName());
                        response.setContentType( contentType );
                        response.setContentLength(data.length);
                             //PrintWriter outStream = response.getWriter();
                             //outStream.println(file.getName() );
                        ServletOutputStream sos = response.getOutputStream();
                        sos.write(data);
                        sos.close();
                   catch(Exception e)
         public void init() throws ServletException {
              // Put your code here

    UPDATE: I have finally figured out my problem and it has nothing to do with the servlet at all. What is in fact happening is that I have jboss running along side IIS and IIS forwards requests to JBOSS/Tomcat. For some reason the connector stops sending the file to tomcat, I suspect based upon file size or timeout something like that. Maybe a timeout config type thing that could be changed in the worker properties?
