PDF Printing Limitations FOP & Cocoon?

Iam trying to export a report with more than 500 rows into a pdf.
Iam using fop + cocoon and the pdf is broken with more than 500 rows.
Are there any limitations when exporting to pdf?
Iam using cocoon-2.1.11
and tomcat 5.5
Does anyone knows whether apex itself makes the limitations or cocoon/fop?
Is there any possibilty to export only the shown rows? (the result has 500 rows, but it shows only the first 200, can i export these first 200?)

Hello,
We have produced reports with way more than those numbers of rows so I don't think that is the problem.
Are you sure there's no potential issues with the data itself? Try exporting the XML for the report query and looking through to see if you have any potentially problematic characters in there.

  • PDF Printing with FOP/Apache Tomcat/J4LFOPServer in windows

    Hi everyone,
    I have been learning to create pdf report with Apex 4.2 and BI Publisher 10 which I have been successful with. Now I like to learn how to create pdf reports using FOP thinking of the customers who will not spend money on BI Publisher. I have gone through the documents and procedures described in Java 4 Less. http://www.java4less.com/apache/fop.php and http://www.java4less.com/fopdesigner/fodesigner.php?info=apex. Configured Apex instance setting accordingly.
    For default layout a tabular pdf report is created.
    I have created an xsl-fo file named Formatted_report.fo on same query and xml file from report query with BI Desktop. But when I try to print a formatted output with Formatted_report.fo report layout it does not work(J4LFOPServer ). but same layout with .rtf template works fine (BI Publisher Print Server).
    Please help

    hi,
    if you use the J4lFOPServer as you write, you can set it in debug mode as described here:
    http://www.java4less.com/apache/fop.php?info=faq#debug
    you will then see the XML data and the FO data in the server window. Maybe you can see there if there is an error and that can help you fixing it.

    I too use multiple report queries which are then converted to XML and passed to the FOP server, I'm not sure what you want is achievable in the report queries. Alternatively you can use XSL in the style sheet to conditionally display output.
    e.g.
    <fo:block font-size="8pt">
    <xsl:for-each select="//ROWSET2/ROWSET2_ROW">
    <xsl:variable name="vContactTypeName">
    <xsl:value-of select="CONTACT_TYPE_NAME"/>
    </xsl:variable>
    <xsl:if test="$vContactTypeName = 'URL'">
    <fo:block><xsl:value-of select="CONTACT_TYPE_VALUE"/></fo:block>
    </xsl:if>
    </xsl:for-each>
    </fo:block>
    Hope that helps

  • Pdf Printing using fop

    Hello gurus,
    I am receiving the following errors once I load my .fo file and test it:
    Adobe could not open 'accpted_risk_rpt[3].pdf, not a supported file type or fille has been damaged.
    I am using Apex 3.2.1 on Oracle 10g. I have purchased the java4less to produce my formatted reports and export the .fo file.
    Then upload the file into my Apex environment and attach the file to a report query, then I receive the error. When I attach the file to the defuault fo layout, provided by apex it doesn't error on me. Any help on this is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • Tomcat/Cocoon/APEX PDF printing. Another issue

    Hi All,
    I am trying to implement my own custom report layout for the following simple Report query
    select e.DEPTNO, d.DNAME, d.LOC, e.ENAME, e.JOB
    from emp e, dept d
    where e.deptno = d.deptno
    The steps are the following
    1. Create Report Query
    2. Download XML file
    3. Use Stylus Studio to create XSL-FO (XSLT 2.0) based on XML data downloaded in
    previous step.
    4. Go back to Report query and upload XSL-FO file to APEX (layout name 'MyLayout' is also specified).
    Finish Report Query creation
    5. Enter Report Query again, select report layout 'MyLayout' and select Test Report
    The result is a failure with some java cocoon exception:
    org.apache.cocoon.ProcessingException: Unknown request object encountered named template : null
    Cocoon stacktrace[hide]
    Exception in StreamGenerator.generate() context://fop_post/sitemap.xmap - 17:32 <map:serialize type="xml">

    context://fop_post/sitemap.xmap - 30:38 <map:generate>
    context://sitemap.xmap - 1034:92 <map:mount>
    It seems to me that XSL-FO that I created for this layout is rejected somehow by APEX and not passed to Coccon at all.
    Guys, what am I doing wrong ? I will appreciate any help.
    Regards,
    Vadim

    Hi Mike,
    My standard printing is working nicely. That's the custom reporting that I experience problems with.
    After 8 hours of googling and 4 cups of coffee I figured out where the problem was. When you define XSL-FO file you need to 'escape' every occurence of % sign. For example you cannot define width= "100%" because APEX will pass this unchanged to Tomcat and Tomcat in turn will reject this but still passing NULL template pointer to Cocoon. Taking into consideration very poor logging capabilities one can spend hours trying to fugure out what is hapenning. APEX should be smart enough to escape characters or at least there should be a doco somewhere listing the rules you need to follow whem creating FO stylesheets.
    I must admit that the whole APEX PDF printing using Tomcat/Cocoon (and probably Fop because that's what used by Cocoon behind the scene anyway) is unfortunately a hack. Reporting does not have to be that complex.
    I would be extremely grateful if somebody can tell me what sort of XML tool is best suited to generate XSL-FO files that can be easily understood by APEX/Tomcat/Cocoon.
    Regards,
    Vadim

  • Cocoon - Tomcat - APEX for FOP PDF printing

    I'm trying to setup Cocoon & Tomcat with APEX 4.1 for doing PDF printing of some reports.
    I'm using Linux 64bit, Tomcat 7.0.22, Cocoon 2.1.11, and JDK (build 1.6.0_24-b07).
    I followed Carl Backstrom's very helpful [blog entry|http://carlback.blogspot.com/2007/03/apex-cocoon-pdf-and-more.html] about using cocoon and tomcat to produce PDF reports through APEX. However, I must just be missing something, because it's not working at all for me.
    Does anyone have any suggestions about getting this to work? Whenever, I attempt to hit the cocoon site (localhost:8080/cocoon/), I receive the following error:
    "org.apache.cocoon.ResourceNotFoundException: No pipeline matched request: index.html"
    Whenever I attempt to download a PDF report, I receive this error:
    "Adobe reader cannot open 'reportname.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged."
    If you have this configuration (cocoon, tomcat, APEX, PDF printing) working, I'd greatly appreciate it if you shared any URLs or tips you have in getting this setup. I understand why folks fork out the big $ for BI Publisher, but that's not an option for me.
    Many thanks,
    Reid

    In the Tomcat Manager app, it shows that cocoon is deployed and running.
    I was able to reload it as well:
    "OK - Reloaded application at context path /cocoon"
    I see this in the Tomcat log:
    "SEVERE: The web application [cocoon] appears to have started a thread named [HSQLDB Timer @6b033450] but has failed to stop it. This is very likely to create a memory leak."

  • Problem regarding PDF printing in apex 3.1 and 11g database using cocoon

    Hi,
    i am configuring pdf printing on apex 3.1 (database 11g on windows XP OS) with cocoon/apache tomcat/fop using steps given in Carl Backstrom blog
    http://carlback.blogspot.com/2007/03/apex-cocoon-pdf-and-more.html
    I am using cocoon 2.2.10 / tomcat 6.0.20 and JDK 1.6
    I did everything as was mentioned in Carl's blog and everything configured without any hassle. I even enabled network services for FLOWS_030100 user on database. Even after doing all the steps I'm getting the error
    ORA-20001: The printing engine could not be reached because either the URL specified is incorrect or a proxy URL needs to be specified.
    I'm confused and don't know what to do next.

    Hi,
    By default, the ability to interact with network services is disabled in Oracle Database 11g release 1 (11.1). Therefore, if running Oracle Application Express with Oracle Database 11g release 1 (11.1), use the new DBMS_NETWORK_ACL_ADMIN package to grant connect privileges to any host for the FLOWS_030100 database user. Failing to grant these privileges results in issues with PDF/report printing, specifically, you will get the following error message:
    ORA-20001: The printing engine could not be reached because either
    the URL specified is incorrect or a proxy URL needs to be specified.
    Follow the steps mentioned in the Oracle Application Express Installation Guide, [Enabling Network Services in Oracle Database11g|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10513_01/doc/install.310/e10496/post_inst.htm#BGEJJIHE]. Also refer to the [troubleshooting section|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10513_01/doc/install.310/e10496/post_inst.htm#BHAGIHIB] in case you receive an ORA-44416: Invalid ACL error after running the previous script.

  • PDF Printing with XSL-FO and Apache FOP

    Can anyone show me in the right direction for this? I've been hitting a wall for the past 2 weeks or so and it's really starting to infuriate me. How am I supposed to work this out? Where do I start? Let's say I create a layout file with a WYSIWYG XSL editor, in what format do I export it? XSL, XSLT or XSL-FO? I figured it was XSL-FO, but who knows. Best regards,
    Mathieu

    Hello Mathieu
    i assume that the default PDF printing is working, but that you want to create some better looking reports and therefore use a different non-generic XSL-FO.
    You can do several things in Apex but you can use the Apache-Fop conversion also indepent from Apex.
    What you need is:
    1) An XML (Data) File. You can get it from your report query when you say export it to XML.
    2) The XSL-FO (Layout) file. THis is the processing instruction that says how convert the XML Data into an XML-FO. You can create it manually or with some tool.
    3) The next step is to render the XML-FO into any output format (pdf, rtf, html)
    The creation of the XML-FO and of the PDF are done by the apache fop converter (cocoon or Batik framework if I remember correctly) in a single process but you can influence it so that both steps are done separately. See also: http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/fop/0.95/running.html
    The advantage is that you usually get much better error messages from the single steps.
    My recommendation would be to do all the steps with a very basic report first.
    Then gradually improve the complexity of the report, the data and the layout.

  • PDF printing--tomcat/cocoon installed, but report server not found------

    As I understood, APEX 3.1 requires either BI/FO tools to enable PDF printing.
    As I do not have BI license, and as I happened to check a very good link on a blog which had a detailed viewlet on apache-cocoon route for PDF print enabling, I downloaded the tomcat, cocoon source files, built the cocoon .WAR, put it in required place as instructed, started tomcot (ran into pronblems because of port conflits, resolved these by configuring different ports for 8005 and 8080 ports).
    Now, when I want to configure the external report server, I am stuck.
    I am not able to locate 'Instances' tab, or 'manage environment settings ' tab in 'manage services'
    I am able to find only following tabs in 'manage services' under HOME.--> Administration ----> Manage services
    1) session state
    2) caching
    3) workspace preferences
    4) applications
    5) workspace
    6) workspace schema reports
    7) Logs
    Can anyone help me to find out where to configure the 'report server' now?
    Thanks,
    suresh.

    Sorry, it was a silly problem:) You have to be logged in as admin to 'see' the 'instances' tab. maybe in all the tomcat/cocoon build/config issues, this simply got off my head!
    now, the problem of print server config is over, I have configured the same. the 'print' link is available now in report region, when I run the report. but when I click the 'print' link, it is taking ages...or rather it is still processing...!!
    Can anyone please point out to me now what is the problem...?
    thanks.

  • PDF Printing  APEX 3.2.1  (APACHE FOP) which OC4J version  for Oracle 11g?

    I am using APEX 3.2.1 on Oracle 11.g (under windows XP)
    I want to test PDF printing (in advanced turorial) with standard config ( APACHE FOP no Oracle BI publisher).
    When I look oracle doc : http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/html/configure_printing.html)
    prerequisites for installing WAR file (Installing and Configuring Apache FOP) imply downlad for Oracle Containers for J2EE (10.1.3.2) ,
    once there : http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/ias/htdocs/utilsoft.html)
    the accessed page seems restricted to Oracle Application Server 10g Software Downloads.
    My question : is the last Version (10.1.3.5.0 : Oracle Containers for J2EE 10g (OC4J) (build #090727, 91 MB) - J2EE 1.4 compatible with EJB 3.0 / JPA 1.0 support ) also VALID for Oracle 11g ?

    I just installed a similar setup with the following software combination and it works.
    win32_11gR1_database.zip
    oc4j_extended_101350.zip
    jdk-1_5_0_22-windows-i586-p.exe

  • PDF PRINTING using Apache FOP and Oracle Containers for J2EE

    Hi,
    I am having major confusion about the pdf printing in Oracle XE and Apex 3.1.2.00.02
    It clearly states that this is an available option on the Oracle website.
    According to Apex there are two options for printing report regions.
    Standard - which is free
    Advanced - which uses BI and requires a licence
    Standard requires me to have Apache FOP (which is provided by Oracle in the Apex release) and Oracle Containers for J2EE (OC4J)
    Where my understanding of all this falls down is the part where I am downloading the Oracle Containers for J2EE and the license agreement states this cannot be used in a production system (only as a protptype). Can anyone clarify this? This is surely a required componenet and for the standard report printing which is supposed to be free.
    My problem is that I need to have a database system on a laptop that will go off site for a number of weeks. We need report printing options.
    Can anyone help with this. im desperate.
    Kind regards
    colin mclay

    no not yet with Application Server.
    I have tried to compare the settings to another installation with a separeted oc4j as described in the howto. But at the moment i found no mistakes.
    If i call the url adresse like:
    http://localhost:18101/fop/apex_fop.jsp
    i get:
    500 Internal Server Error
    Servlet error: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: fop.apex__fop
    I installed it another time with these settings:
    Web Anwendung= .../fop.war (selected war file from apex install directory)
    Anwendungsname= fop
    URL zuordnen= /fop
    I would like to know if its possible to use the fop.war out of apex install directory with the Application server? In the standalone version (as described in howto) it works. But if you install it there you don't need to define an URL.
    Is the URL /fop correct or what do i have to insert there?

  • Problems with FOP/Apache - Apex PDF printing

    Hello,
    I have configured
    Apex 3.0.1
    iAS 10.1.3.x (http + modplsql)
    OC4J 10.1.3.3 (stand alone)
    FOP for PDF printing
    RDBMS 9.2.0.8 64bits (Solaris)
    following the OTN recipee and this setup does not seem to work for all cases.
    For instance, using the Apex admin interface, I go to the monitoring page :
    Home -> Monitor Page -> Login Attempts
    And click on the Print link (left bottom corner of the page) , it works o.k, the PDF is generated correctly.
    However, if I go to
    Home -> utilities -> Object Reports -> Table Storage Sizes
    and click on the Print link, it does not work. A pdf file is generated with the following text
    <HTML><HEAD><TITLE>500 Internal Server Error</TITLE></HEAD>
    <BODY><H1>500 Internal Server Error</H1>
    <PRE>Servlet error: An exception occurred. The current application deployment descriptors do not allow for including it in this response. Please consult the application log for details.</PRE>
    </BODY>
    </HTML>
    If I check in the application log I see the following error
    07/08/08 11:52:21.584 fop: Servlet error
    oracle.xml.xpath.XPathException: Error in expression: './/BYTES/1024/1024'.

    I do not think it is related to a config/installation issue. It seems a parsing issue with the SQL stmt being executed, but it works for some SQL code and not for other.
    Some users did notice this problem this morning when testing the new PDF printing.
    Any ideas ?
