Pdf support or integration or work-around?

Hi everyone -
I'll get to the point...having 10+years in Flash/AS background, I'd rather code an iPhone/iPad app in Flash/Flex/AIR etc if possible rather than use objective C.
I am working on an app that would fit perfectly with Flash's workflow and capabilities for iPhone/iPad app creation - except .pdf (acrobat) integration.
I just need to be able to load .pdf documents somehow and it would be perfect.
According to the simple tests - using HTMLLoader.pdfcapability and HTMLLoader.isSupported - it doesn't seem possible (the former returns an integer instead of the OK constant and the second says false)...So I was wondering if anyone has investigated any workarounds for pdf integration from a flash-created iPhone/iPad app?
thanks so much in advance.

  • Why does it seem like Apple uses support communities to find work-arounds, and not fix the issues found here?

The problem with iTunes clipping last 15-20 seconds of song playback to jump to next song has been a problem listed since 2009, and the only solutions are from community users. No official replies at all from Apple. Why is that? I'm currently having this problem with my iPad2 and latest IOS, with no idea what is causing the problem. They haven't even looked to a fix it seems

Due to phenomenal development in Windows, Microsoft released 4 generations of operating systems, succeeding Windows XP. Hence, on various aspects, Windows XP becomes too old to be used practically these days. So the support was pulled out.
I do agree that Windows XP is the most successful operating system ever, so far. But, later versions added more features, enhanced security and compatibility. Moreover, at this point, Windows XP becomes more vulnerable, although security patches are made.
Ultimately, we need to move to a more secure, feature-rich and highly compatible operating system.
With improved features in newer versions of Windows, the NTFS filesystem has also been improved, adding new features. Hence, certain feaures that are not availble in Windows XP are available in Windows 7, again, in Windows 8.1. So is the disk management
    features.
As for Acronis Disk Director, it's a third party software and hence we can't comment on the features/its working.

  • Is there a work around to the fact that MAC OS no longer supports software using PowerPC?

I can no longer use two interactive Pearson Pelican Plus interactive CD Roms in school because I get an error message saying PowerPC is no longer supported by Mac. My OS is 10.9.5.
    Is there a work around?

    Ella:
It is unclear from your post if your inability to use Pearson CD-ROMs occurred after you purchased a new Mac, or simply upgraded your current one to Mavericks.
If you simply upgraded to Mavericks, your easiest solution and best operating environment would be to use Disk Utility to partition your hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard (with the optional Rosetta) into that partition.  You could then use the "dual-boot" process (System Preferences:Startup Disk) to determine with environment is operating on your Mac: Snow Leopard when you want to run the CD-ROM or Mavericks where you need more modern capabilities.
Note that if you must have the concurrent ability to run the CD-ROM and  Mavericks, then, the previous information posted by others in this thread is your only solution and there is no point in your taking the extra steps to partition your hard drive and install Snow Leopard.
The previous information provided to you is largely accurate except for one point that is irrelevant to your concerns and will only generate needless irrelevant repetitious responses if I point out what it is.
The great tragedy in today's USA society is the government's failure to properly fund education combined with the high amount and cost of student loans and their inability to be discharged in bankruptcy.
The combination of all of these factors leads educational publisher's such as Pearson no financial incentive to upgrade many of their essential products for the education market, including rewriting their CD-ROMs to work directly on Intel Macs without the addition of Rosetta, which is not longer supplied by OS X after Snow Leopard.
Having seen this problem posted on this forum quite regularly over the last few years, I purchased a demo CD-ROM from Pearson on Amazon and I am able to report that indeed they will run on a Mavericks (or Mt. Lion or Lion) Mac that has Snow Leopard Server ("SLS") installed into a virtualization program (in my case Parallels), as shown here:
Previous posts have described the telephone process and part number to obtain SLS from Apple for the now 95% discounted price of $20!  Parallels offers a 14-day free trial download of Parallels (do not activate it until you are in possession of SLS):
    http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/download/
If you need it, more detailed information on this process is available here:

    Good Luck with your education!

The only workaround would be to purchase the current version of iLife apps from the App Store.
Lion doesn't support the old PowerPC architecture anymore, which is what iLife '06 was written for.
If the internal apps are universal, right-click on the mpkg and choose Show Contents. Then, dig through and run the specific installer package for each application.

  • I recently up dated my OS to 10.7.3 and I get a "can't open application because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.  Can this be restored?  If not do you know if Epson has drivers for my scanner that work around this?

You cannot run PPC software in Lion. Go to Epson's website to see if they have an updated scanner driver. If they don't then you can try using VueScan if it supports your scanner model.

  • FF4 does not support Trend Micro Titanium and Trend Micro has not developed a work around. Have you?

Because of the existing problem with FF4 not supporting my paid subscription to my security software, I've used FF4 sparingly. Trend Micro is "developing" a work around. Can some one please suggest how I can start using Firefox again. I tried to go back to FF3. That didn't work out, either.

Found the following on the TrendMicro forum:

  • Does anyone know why Lion does not support the HP LaserJet CP1025nw and if there is a work around?

Does anyone know why Lion does not support the HP LaserJet CP1025nw and if there is a work around while we wait for a dedicated driver? HP claims apple provides the drivers but I am not certain of this.

See the following link for details from the hp.com site on using your model of printer with Lion along with a number of other FAQs :

  • Any work-around for non-Lion-supported HP LaserJet printer?

I just upgraded to Lion, and while love many of the features (the new mail app is great), I just discovered that my 6-month-old HP LaserJet CP1525nw printer apparently isn't compatible with Lion. Does anyone have any work-arounds for generic drivers that might resolve this. As inexpensive as Lion is, I'd hate to have to buy a new printer just so I can take advantage of Lion funcationality and full iCloud capabilities. Thanks.

In preparing to install the drivers for the CP1510 series, I decided to download and reinstall the package for the CP1520 series. First, I also installed the firmware update, which had been released since I purchased my printer. Then I reinstalled the drivers using System Preferences, etc.
Lo and behold, the printer now works. For some reason, after the upgrade to Lion, the drivers for my CP1525nw stopped working, even though all of my other printers (1610, 2510, 2610, 2605dn)  performed just fine without any jiggering after the Lion upgrade.
Curiously, my first attempt to download the software package for the CP1525nw wouldn't download, launching a dialog that says the driver isn't supported for this operating system. The HP website does not include the CP1525nw in the list of supported LaserJets, but elsewhere paradoxically claims all printers supported for Snow Leopard should also run on Lion, which appears to be true for the CP1525nw.
Go figure. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. It got me headed in the right direction.

  • .rpf files support, or a work around.

    Hello,
I am currently evaluating Shake with a view to switching over from After Effects.
One of the processes I have been using After Effects for is compositing architectural renders.
This involves rendering two passes from Cinema4D, one with radiosity, the other with antialiasing. Then in After Effects using object buffers to extract elements, like trees and buildings, from each pass and layering them up.
Does Shake support .rpf files, and if not is there a work around?
Any feedback or insights much appreciated,
    Cathal

.RPF files are on the list of supported file formats. The manual says:
Shake supports several combinations of the following imput channels:
    • BW: Black and White
    • RGB: Red, Green, and Blue
    • A: Alpha Channel
    • Z: Zchannel, for depth
Evidently the RPF is a Adobe specific variant of the RLA format...
Though I have no personal experience with .RPF files, there are Z Channel exercises in the turorials...

  • Work around for User ID 32 character limitation in CCX Agent?

Are there any kind of creative work arounds for getting past the ridiculous 32 character limit when logging into the CCX Agent?
We are moving toward using the User Principal Name (UPN) in CUCM LDAP which means that the domain is now tacked onto the end of their existing User IDs.  We are doing this so that users from multiple domains can authenticate to various Cisco tools and apps.  It works very well, except when firing up the Agent!
I've already been playing around with UPN suffixes, and while I can get them to show up in CUCM (and subsequently), I can't seem to get them to authenticate.
I shouldn't even have to get this creative, just remove the 32 character limit, Cisco!
We are running CCX 8.5 and CUCM 8.6

    Hi ,
I am not aware about any such workarounds.
After referring to the below guide,
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cust_contact/contact_center/crs/express_8_5/configuration/guide/uccx851ag.pdf
On page 78, it is mentioned as,
Caution : When logging into Cisco Agent Desktop, agents use the Unified CM user ID and password. While the Unified CM limits agent IDs to 128 alphanumeric characters, the Unified CCX limits agent IDs to 31 alphanumeric characters. Be sure to abide by the 31 character-limit when configuring agents in Unified CM.
I am sure even if it works by some workarounds also, you may see some issues specially from the CAD\CSD\CDA side, which Cisco will not support it quoting the same above reason.
    Hope it helps,
    Anand

  • Crash in OCR--any suggestions for work-around?

There is a book from Google Books that I want to read on my computer. It's in the public domain, and I downloaded it here.
I have OCR'd it using "Searchable Image Exact" in some version of Acrobat (don't remember) so I can do searches in it. But all the Google Books display very slowly, and are basically CPU hogs in every PDF reader that I have found (anybody know the reason for that?), so it is not comfortable to read on my computer.
So I thought I would try OCR with ClearScan to see if this would speed up pdf display. Every time I have tried OCRing this document with ClearScan, Acrobat crashes (4 trials, 2 computers, v. 9.3.2).
    Questions for anybody out there
    1) Is it normal that OCR-ing causes crashes? This is the first time I have seen it.
    2) Any work-arounds come to mind?
    3) What is the best way to deal with Adobe re. a crashing bug? When I have reported user-interface bugs in Bridge, I received a very nice reply asking me for details 4 months after I reported the bug! I tried calling India but there was a 20-minute hold time, and then we got disconnected and I haven't tried again.

For what it is worth, I tried to use Adobe's tech support system to resolve this problem (their 1-800 number). I strongly recommend that no-one else ever try that. After talking for 2 hours with what had to be the sweetest and most patient tech support person in the world, we made no progress. She tried to use Adobe's Web Connect to diagnose the problem, but it was broken (known to be broken on Adobe's side), the telephone connection (IP-connection to India) was almost inaudible, they have their ftp site set up in a way that just isn't macintosh friendly (to be charitable, maybe macintosh isn't ftp-friendly). After 2 hours we were almost at the place where she was going to be able to replicate the bug, when I was disconnected. I have a case number, but I just don't have the heart to call back and go through this process.

  • Interactive PDF Layer Visibility Buttons Not Working On iPad

I've created a document in Indesign CS6 and exported the layers to pdf. I created a button in acrobat pro to change a layers visibility. The pdf is intended to be viewed on an iPad and the button wont work. It does however work perfectly on my desktop. Does anybody have a work around?

There is little to none support for scripts and other advanced features of PDF files on iOS devices, unfortunately.

  • Does anyone know of a work around for this problem? : iphone 5 will not work on Chryslers uconnect.  I found out that they are working on it but have no ETA.   However, they will not help you if your vehicle is older thatn 2008.

Do not get an iphone 5 if you want to use it with a Chrysler product.  The Chrysler Uconnect system might pair with your phone but the uconnect system will usually abend and become unusable after a few telephone conversations.  I have been to the dealer twice.  They have reset the uconnect system twice and I find it works for about 2 to 3 phone calls then it abends and uconnect becomes useless.  They had me call Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753.  I was told that the iphone five is not compatable at this time with any chrysler uconnect phone through the dash system, even the new vehicles.  He had me get on this web site: www.uconnectphone.com as a place to monitor as when it would be compatable.  They told me that Samsung seems to be working harder to make it compatible than apple is and they had no idea when it would begin to work.  In effect Chrysler was telling me dump the iphone and get a Samsung if you want it to work in a Chrysler.  Also, the site would only give you information for Chrysler that were 2008 or newer, they gave the following number to call if your vehicle was older.    I called that number and they told me that Chrysler and Uconnect had no plans at all to make the iphone 5 work, in the future, on any Chrysler older than 2008.  So.......If you have a Chrysler or Dodge that is older than 2008 you will NEVER  be able to use an iphone5 on the uconnect through the dash system.   Do not buy an iphone if you have an older vehicle.  It will never be supported for the $1,000 you paid for this uconnect system on your car.  My car is a 2005 Town and Country.  I asked both Chrysler and uconnect if their was some sort of work around so I could use my phone.  They both told me their was not and that they had no plans to resolve this situation for my vehicle.  This means that I need to either get rid of my $42,000 vehicle with low milage or get rid of my Iphone 5.  Niether are really good options.
I was also givne the following places to send formal complaints, even though I was told that neither Chrysler, Dodge or Apple were going to do anything to correct my problem:
for email:   [email protected]   or Mail:  Chrysler customer Assistance  P.O. Box 218004, Auburn Hills, Michigan  48321
If anyone hears of a work around to be able to use an Iphone 5 in a Chrysler or Dodge product, please let me know.

This response is a little late as I just read about your problem. I have a 2012 Dodge Charger and a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country and both worked flawlessly with the iPhone 5s my wife and I had. However, we just upgraded to the iPhone 6 and Uconnect will receive calls but you cannot answer them. You can callout successfully, however. the annoyance being the inability to answer incoming calls in the HandsFree mode.

  • Is there a work around to use two Apple IDs across and iPhone and a MB Pro?

iPhone 5 and Macbook Pro Retina late 2013.  iOS 8.1 and Yosemite.
It's a company iPhone and a personal MBP.  Phone has an Apple ID associated with company credit card and MBP personal Apple ID with personal credit card.
There is a cross platform issue as you cannot use two Apple IDs in Facetime and Messages.  Therefore my iPhone and MBP do not interoperate correctly, for example, a text message in messages on the iPhone will not appear in Messages on the MBP.  Similar situation for FaceTime.  When you try to enter the second email associated with the second Apple ID on either platform you get "cannot verify because email is already in use".
    Any work arounds?
This is something Apple should have really anticipated as iPhones become more widespread in corporate use.

Thank you for your continued interest and research on my behalf on this situation. I was on the phone with Apple support (at no charge) for over an hour yesterday. Becasue I have what they cal a "vintage computer"(7 1/2 years old), there are some additional issues.  We thought it was solved at teh end of the phone call but aparently it was not. I am going to call them now and see what else can be done. I will keep you posted.
    Thanks again.
