performance: oci7 vs. oci8
Hi,
I was wondering if anybody else encountered this problem with an oci8 client:
A select statement with a where clause containing a host variable that is bound once and repeatedly executed/fetched performs upto 10 times worse as compared to a similar operation with an oci7 client.
IS this a known problem?

Why would you do it this way?
Why can't you execute once using a range specified by 2 binds in a single select.
You have to remember that because the describe info is returned on the execute of a select whether you want to describe the select list or not, this overhead is amortized over the savings due to rows pre-fetched.

Hi,
I apologize in advance for a lengthy message.
I'm trying to write an application that will use either
OCI7 or OCI8. The problem I'm hitting is that once it tries
to use OCI7 and gets and error, when it goes to use OCI8 it
still thinks it is using OCI7. On my test NT machine, OCI8 is
installed and not OCI7. I have seperated the OCI7 and OCI8
connections into seperate classes. Here is the OCI7 class:

When I call the class I am using:

In each of these statements GLS_Conn7.CreateConn and
GLS_Conn8.CreateConn it is trying to use the OCI7 driver.
If I switch the ordering, it will use the OCI8 driver.
Is there a way to test which driver is installed and use the
correct one?

i´m new with OCI, and I have to migrate a very old code from OCI7 to OCI8.
I've been looking in
http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/appdev.920/a96584/oci01int.htm#423092
and found that there's some functions that are equivalent, but in many ways the programming way is quite different (i'm finding quite a lot of problems with cursors and so).
please, i need to know if there's a good guide for helping me in this migration and what difficult could be it (i think quite a lot).

OCI calls demarcate a session from a connection from Oracle8 onwards. A session is the state object in which all statements are executed, committed or rolled back. It is the users workspace and contains the security domain of the user. A connection is just a data pipe to an oracle process to execute the current call. In that sense, connection points to the unit of scheduling (process) and session is the workspace which is assumed by the scheduled process to execute the current OCI call.

I am getting the nQSERROR :47012 Syntax error in nqsconfig.ini file ..
As per the Oracle Tutorial ....
I changed the below parameter in nqsconfig.ini from
Star = samplesales.rpd ,DEFAULT;
Star = SH.rpd ,DEFAULT;
Now when I click the Administrator tool from start---> programs ,i get the above error...
I have tried to restore back to samplesales ,still no help....i have no backup...
Could someone enlighten me? else can someone cut-paste their nqsconfig.ini for WIN XP ..

I have following problem. I hope to be clear in my English because it's a bit complicated to explain.

In AWM i've defined a Drug Dimension based on following hierarchy: Drug Active Ingredient (parent) - Drug Brand Description (leaf) mapped as:

Indeed in my cube I've mapped leaf level Drug Brand Description = Drug Id of my fact table. In AWM Drug Dimension is mapped as Sum Aggregation Operator

Wrong Aggregation is only on top level of hierarchy. Aggregation on lower level of hierarchy is correct. Maybe Answers sum also Total Row????? Why?????

OBIEE 10g RPD Paswword Reset not working
I have gotten 2 10g RPDs, the password of which I do not know. I ma trying to change/ reset the password by making use of the technique wherein "AUTHENTICATION_TYPE = BYPASS_NQS;" is uncommented within the NQSConfig.ini file. It does not seem to be working. I have also changed the Default RPD name within the config file to the new RPD alongside ensuring there are no gaps/ spaces in the RPD name which are the common pitfalls.
The strange part is that it did work with another 10g RPD couple of weeks back but is not working with the two RPDs I got yesterday. I have just the client 10.1.3.4.2 installed so eliminates the possibility of the BI server being up and running.
Is there anything else that could be preventing/ hindering this?Nope. Did not work. Message returned back is that the existing password does not match the RPD password.

Not able to login into presentations server
Hi,
I have installed OBIEE in my local machine. As a part of report creation I have created an rpd file and changed the NQSConfig.ini file as mentioned in
http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe_bi/bi_ee_1013/bi_admin/biadmin.html.
Then I have re-started the OC4J server and all the OBIEE services. Then I open the Presentation Services, I am not able to log in. The error shown is
Error Codes: WH4KCFW6:OPR4ONWY:U9IM8TAC
Odbc driver returned an error (SQLDriverConnectW).

I have already gone through the forums which are already logged reporting the same error. But I dint get any pointers to the solution.

One more thing is that I have kept the BI server (OC4J server) runnung.
Does the time of the error in NQSServer.log match with when you try to login to Presentation Services?
I donot see any error matching the time of loginto presentation services. -

It seems to work but I am having issues, two apps are connected to the same Database one is in power builder y the other in VB6 after a certain time of inactivity I get timed out from the VB app and this gets also into the power builder app.
but if one app is open for a long time it seems to work just fine. any ideas why?

connection editor only supported the Oracle Thin, OCI7 and OCI8
drivers. For 2.0 production, Oracle Lite and the JDBC-ODBC bridge

1- I am using the Oracle JDBC thin driver, named host (I also

in Step 3 of the wizard when I click anyx of the check boxes
(tables, views ,etc..) appear the following message

2- I also tryed using a JDBC - ODBC connection but the wizard

Hello
I am trying to setup java cgi that will simply extract data from table and post it on the web page.
I have .java which I can successfully compile ang run on the server when I loged in, however when I am truing to run it from the net trough cgi-bin using sh script it gives me following error:

A Query with LOB's requires OCI8 mode, but OCI7 mode is used
Hello all,
I am using Oracle 10g. We have two tables and in that, in one table i have a Long Raw Column and in the other table i have a BLOB field. When i use the select query to fetch the details from the table with Long Raw field it is working fine and at the same time if i use the select query on the table with the BLOB field it is giving me an error
'A query with LOB's requires OCI8 mode, but OCI7 mode is used.'

I think your client machine is not setup to connect to the Database. Run the Oracle Net8 Assistant or the Net8 Easy Config to connect to the Database.

We are looking to upgrade our 11.1.0.7.0 databases to 11.2.0.3 at some point. I have installed a test database to try our in-house applications. We are getting the about message in a Delphi Soap application which we do not get when using 11.1 database. Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this?

OCI is the Oracle Call Interface a client uses to communicate with the database. Obviously this changes from Oracle RDBMS version to RDBMS version as old features are deprecated and new features introduced.
Delphi itself does/should not care - as it uses an abstract interface to talk to the database. E.g. the TDatabase, TQuery and other classes.
These classes are in turn implemented (as I recall) on a BDE driver that talks OCI (Oracle), or Net-Star (Informix), or dbLib (Sybase/SQL-Server), etc. These classes however also support the ODBC interface.
So in your case, I'm guessing you have:
+Delphi Client | BDE driver | OCI client driver <--[tcp]--> RDBMS+
It would seem that the BDE driver you are using for OCI connectivity, uses the older OCI7 call methods. And the actual OCI client driver installed does not support this. Replacing the OCI driver (Oracle client) with an older version means a OCI driver unable to use the database version you have.
Two basic choices. Replace the BDE driver with one that supports the OCI8 interface version. Replace the BDE driver with an Oracle 11g ODBC driver.
But I'm making a lot of assumptions here, as technical details are lacking. Posting the full error stack (with all errors) will make the picture more clear.
Oh yes - a third option exist. Using the OCI directly from Delphi. The Free Pascal project (which supports Delphi Pascal) has OCI units - which in my experience is fairly easy to use. Granted, the OCI is a somewhat complex call interface, but the basics are pretty straightforward and sample C code from Oracle for using the OCI can be copy-and-pasted and used with a few syntax modifications. -

I have a very curious performance problem. I have a query which returns 0 rows and takes around 9 secs to execute in TopLink. If I try to execute generated SQL for that ReadAllQuery (taken from log) directly through JDBC, it takes only 70ms. I use TopLink 9.0.3 with Oracle9i 9.2.0.3. I've traced through sources and identified that the problem is not in Toplink directly but in call to Oracle JDBC driver. But then I don't understand why in my JDBC case it is so fast. The problem is the same no matter if I use thin or OCI driver.

TopLink supports native SQL generation that will use the TO_DATE operators. You can turn on native SQL in a couple of ways.
1. SESSIONS.XML

2. Through DatabaseLogin API:
