Performance testing of Tabular model

I have Power View on SharePoint 2013 on tabular model.
How to test performance of tabular model with SQL Server tools or equivalents?
Kenny_I

Hi Kenny_I,
According to your description, you want to test the performance of tabular model with SQL Server tools, right? In this case, we can use SQL Profiler to achieve your requirement. Here is a blog which describes using SQL Server to Analyze Analysis Services
Profiler Traces from Tabular Models, please refer to the link below to see the details.

  • Tabular model performance

    HI,
I have built a small database of size 31 MB on tabular mode. DB querymode is set to InMemory. With simple setup, a normal evaluate dax query is taking 1 sec to retrieve list of sales person which is a dimension table and does not include any calculation.
The other semi complex query are taking 15- 20 secs. The tabular instance setting are set to default as the db size is less and server as total of 7 GB RAM.
Is there any setting that needs to be validated to improve the performance.Because if the model is inmemory then the output should come out in microseconds.
Manohar K - SQL Server DBA Consultant

    Hi Manohar,
According to your description, you are experienciing the performance issue when retrieval data from the small SQL Server Analysis Services Tabular model, right?
In tabular model, as you increase the data load, add more users, or run complex queries, you need to have a strategy for maintaining and tuning performance. Here are some links which describe strategies and specific techniques for getting the best performance
from your tabular models, including processing and partitioning strategies, DAX query tuning, and server tuning for specific workloads. Please refer to the links below.

Besides, I'd suggest you enable SQL Server profiler to monitor the query, and check which part in the query took a very long time to run. Here is a useful link for your reference.

  • Evaluation of hw features of a machine hosting a SSAS Tabular model

    Hi,
on a machine I've deployed a SSAS Tabular model that has two fact tables having each 200-300 millions of rows, and about 10-15 dimension tables. I've implemented some Excel workbooks, each of them queries one measure of one of the two fact tables.
Each workbook has 10-15 filters/slicers. I've tried some times to reduce the number of filter/slicer or of row expansion and I've registered a query response time from 5 to 15 seconds for a change selection for a filter/slicer. 15 seconds is a time too high
    for the user requirements.
The formula for the two measures has some SUMs and DIVIDEs. In order to improve the query performance I've tried to write the formula in different manners and I've created partial calculations in the underlying dwh but with negligible performance improvements.
Cutting filters or slicers or row expansions is against the user requirements.
I've also captured some Profiler traces but with few indications.
I suspect that a possible issue derived from the hw features of the hosting machine. During the use of the pivot table the usage of memory is about 50-60% and the usage of CPU is 80-100%.
With the CPU-Z program I've captured the hw features:
I hope in any suggests deriving from the experiences and not from some papers, fe "Performance Tuning of Tabular Models in SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services", in order to improve the query performance from Excel connected to my tabular model.
Probably, the CPU features are not appropriate.
    Many thanks

  • SSAS Tabular model Performance Issue

    Hello,
We have strange behavior with SSAS tabular model. The Model size is approx. 40GB in memory. Our production server has 200GB memory. Most of the users access the cube via Excel 2013 (64bit). We have been noticing that the performance starts degrading from
the next day after the Analysis service has been restarted or the server rebooted. The day either one of them is performed we get good response but then the next day response times becomes 2 to 3 times more than on the 1st day. Is this something which anyone
else has experienced. We are entering in a mode where we are required to restart the service almost everyday.
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Deepak

Why are you sure role based security is the culprit? Immediately after cube processing or immediately after ClearCache does the report perform fast for a user without any role based security filters? I would recommend reviewing the methodology on page
35 of the tabular performance guide to see if it is a storage engine or formula engine bottleneck and report back.

  • Report using Tabular Model and Measures based on Distinct Counts

    Hello,
I am creating a report that should present something like this:
    YEAR-1 | MONTH-1 | MONTH-2 | MONTH-3... | YEAR | MONTH-1 | MONTH-2 | MONTH-3...
My problem is that when designing the dataset to support this layout I drag the Year, Month and Distinct count Measure, but on the report when I want the value for the YEAR level I don't have it and I cannot sum the months value...
What is the best aproach to solve this? Do I really have to go to advanced mode and customize my MDX or DAX? Can't basic users do something like this that seems so trivial and needed?
    Thank you
    Luis Simões

    Hi Luis,
According to your description, you create a Reporting Services report using Analysis Service Tabular Model as the datasource, now what you want is sum the months value on year level, right?
In your scenario, you can add the Month field to column group, add a parent group using Year Field and then add a Total on Month group. In this case, Reporting Services will sum the months value on Year level. I have tested it on my local environment, the
screenshot below is for you reference.
Reference:Lesson 6: Adding Grouping and Totals (Reporting Services)
If this is not what you want, please describe your dataset structure, so that we can make further analysis.

  • Error while importing data in SSAS Tabular Model

I am new to the concept Tabular Model in SSAS 2014.
I am trying to create one tabular model based on Adventureworks DW 2014.
I am getting below error while importing tables to create model.
"OLE DB or ODBC error: Login failed for user 'ASIAPAC\CSCINDAE732028$'.; 28000.
A connection could not be made to the data source with the DataSourceID of '98c2d415-1e84-469c-a170-2bcacd779c1a', Name of 'Adventure Works DB from SQL'.
An error occurred while processing the partition 'Customer_65240c88-55e7-416c-a7ac-732dece8be8e' in table 'Customer_65240c88-55e7-416c-a7ac-732dece8be8e'.
The current operation was cancelled because another operation in the transaction failed."
But while creating the Datasource, it has created successfully (below img)
But while importing the facing the below error.
    Note:
I have multiple instances in my system with unique names.
Is this causing any ambiguity issues in selecting right instances?

    Hi Naveen,
Based on your screenshots, you fail to open a connection to the data source. Right?
In this scenario, the first screenshot you post is for creating a connection to server with the current windows authentication, not for connecting a data source. So the "Test Connection succeed" means your current windows user can connect
to server, not connect to the database your selected in the dropdown list. Then you click next, you can choose account to access the data source. Based on the information, your service account "'ASIAPAC\CSCINDAE732028$" doesn't have permission to
access the database you selected. Please grant the permission for the service account in SSMS.
If you have any question, please feel free to ask.

  • Tabular Modeling. What is the best practice for importing data into VS to limit the records in the designer?

Should I wrap the queries in a procedure with a @StartDate and @EndDate and create a test partition to pass a small date range?
Or can i use the Table properties screen to put the command there and will it run and not be affected or affect the partitions? This would be nice if this SQL statement on this screen was independent of the partitions and I could just leave it with the the
command text = EXEC TransactionDetail '2014-01-01', '2014-05-31' Especially since if you have many tables that load based on a date range. i would not want to jump in and change that query on all of them.
Is there a a way to have a parameter in the project so all tables would get the same @startDate and @EndDate so I could change it in one place?
And I am not stuck to these questions\options, If there is a better way to mass change the queries to run a subset of data for the designer I'd like to hear it.
    Thank You,
    Phil

    Hi Phil,
According to your description, you are looking for the best way to control the rows that are loaded into a table, right?
When importing data to a table of tabular model, we can apply filters to control the rows that are loaded into a table. After you have imported the data, you cannot delete individual rows. However, you can apply custom filters to control the way that
rows are displayed. Rows that do not meet the filtering criteria are hidden. For the detail information about it, please refer to the link below.Filter Data in a Table (SSAS Tabular)

  • SSAS Tabular Model and browse with MS Excel 2013

I have a tabular model, It has an attribute with datatype and data format as "whole number". When I browse the model from excel and add label filter, it
    does not work as expected.
When I specify greater than 180 as label filter, It gives following output:
My guess is that it is just filtering on first two digits "18" and not "180". When I copy these values in a excel sheet and create pivot table on top of it, hell it works fine.
Is this a microsoft bug? have you encountered something like this or I am doing some thing wrong?
I am using tabular model 2012 and excel 2013 or 2010.

I have tested it on the local environment, we cannot reproduce this issue. As per my understanding, this issue is related to the settings of your tabular model. Does this issue can be reproduce in multiple servers in your environment? In that is
case, from a support perspective this is really beyond what we can do here in the forums. If you cannot determine your answer here or on your own, consider opening a support case with Microsoft. Visit this link to see the various support options that are available

  • Dates Appearing in Tabular Model but not appearing on Pivot table

    Hi all,
I am using SSAS tabular Model 2012, in tabular model all dates are appearing correct in date column but not when i drag attribute to my pivot table it shows only one date. Does anyone has the solution of this issue.
    Regards,
    Piyush

    Hi Piyush0308,
According to your description, you have date column displayed all dates correctly in Tabualr. When showing in a Excel Pivot table, it only get the first date. Right?
In this scenario, firstly please check the source table data in database, then make sure the data type of this column is Date in Tabualr. In Excel, please make sure there's no aggregation setting on this field. As I tested in our local environment, it should
    display same thing in tabular.
If the issue still persists, please share some information about your date table so that we have some deep analysis.

  • Tabular model with Direct Query issue

    Hi,
i am creating a tabular model - Direct Query option. I am using a kind of below query to import data,
Declare @TEST as Table (TestID int, TestName varchar(20))
    Insert into @TEST
    Select 1, 'TEst1' Union
    Select 2, 'TEst2'
    Select * from @TEST
But the Import fails with an error similar to below,
OLE DB or ODBC error.  An error occurred while processing the partition 'Query_``````````' in table 'Query_````````'.  The current operation was cancelled because another operation in the transaction failed.
Any idea, why it is failing ? or is it like we shouldn't use declare statement in the Query area ?
Please reply ...Thanks in advance !
--------------------------- Radhai Krish | Golden Age is no more far | --------------------------

I'm pretty sure that the query would have to be a single statement so the declare statement would be causing issues.
So just doing this as a single union query should work:
Select 1 as TestID, 'TEst1' as TestName Union
    Select 2, 'TEst2'

  • Case-sensitive values in an Tabular Model with a Oracle Datasource

Hi,Lets use an Oracle Database as Datasource for my Project. I use a "Select distinct ColumnA from Table" to build up a LookupTable in my Tabular Model. But it returns Dublicates!! eg:
When I fire the query from Oracle SQL Developer I got 2 Records "1N" and "1n". In the Grid View in SSDT I see 2 times "1N". ??

According to your description, you encounter the case-sensitive issue when creating SQL Server Analysis Services Tabular model project, right?
Based on my research, Tabular models have the insensitivity problem by default. The workaround for this issue is creating a empty tabular model in tabular server using the xmla below and import the tabular in SSDT.

  • Reading the DAX query plan of a trace against a query on a Tabular model

    Hi,
I'm monitoring a Tabular model queried by an Excel workbook. Inside SQL Profiler I've choosen as events the VertiPaq SE Query End, the Query End and the DAX Query Plan. But this last event isn't more readable.
How can I read the info collected in the DAX Query Plan in a simple manner?
    Thanks

It is fairly complex to read the DAX Query Plan. I don't think there are currently tools that make it easier to read. (Watch the DAX Studio project on codeplex as they may include tools for this in the future.) I would recommend you review the Tabular
Performance Guide which has a good explanation of the DAX Query Plan:

  • [Ann] FirstACT 2.2 released for SOAP performance testing

Empirix Releases FirstACT 2.2 for Performance Testing of SOAP-based Web Services
FirstACT 2.2 is available for free evaluation immediately at http://www.empirix.com/TryFirstACT
Waltham, MA -- June 5, 2002 -- Empirix Inc., the leading provider of test and monitoring
solutions for Web, voice and network applications, today announced FirstACT™ 2.2,
the fifth release of the industry's first and most comprehensive automated performance
    testing tool for Web Services.
As enterprise organizations are beginning to adopt Web Services, the types of Web
Services being developed and their testing needs is in a state of change. Major
software testing solution vendor, Empirix is committed to ensuring that organizations
developing enterprise software using Web Services can continue to verify the performance
of their enterprise as quickly and cost effectively as possible regardless of the
    architecture they are built upon.
Working with organizations developing Web Services, we have observed several emerging
trends. First, organizations are tending to develop Web Services that transfer a
sizable amount of data within each transaction by passing in user-defined XML data
types as part of the SOAP request. As a result, they require a solution that automatically
generates SOAP requests using XML data types and allows them to be quickly customized.
Second, organizations require highly scalable test solutions. Many organizations
are using Web Services to exchange information between business partners and have
Service Level Agreements (SLAs) in place specifying guaranteed performance metrics.
Organizations need to performance test to these SLAs to avoid financial and business
penalties. Finally, many organizations just beginning to use automated testing tools
for Web Services have already made significant investments in making SOAP scripts
by hand. They would like to import SOAP requests into an automated testing tool
    for regression testing.
Empirix FirstACT 2.2 meets or exceeds the testing needs of these emerging trends
in Web Services testing by offering the following new functionality:
    1. Automatic and customizable test script generation for XML data types – FirstACT
2.2 will generate complete test scripts and allow the user to graphically customize
test data without requiring programming. FirstACT now includes a simple-to-use XML
editor for data entry or more advanced SOAP request customization.
    2. Scalability Guarantee – FirstACT 2.2 has been designed to be highly scalable to
performance test Web Services. Customers using FirstACT today regularly simulate
between several hundred to several thousand users. Empirix will guarantee to
performance test the numbers of users an organization needs to test to meet its business
    needs.
    3. Importing Existing Test Scripts – FirstACT 2.2 can now import existing SOAP request
directly into the tool on a user-by-user basis. As a result, some users simulated
can import SOAP requests; others can be automatically generated by FirstACT.
Web Services facilitates the easy exchange of business-critical data and information
across heterogeneous network systems. Gartner estimates that 75% of all businesses
with more than $100 million in sales will have begun to develop Web Services applications
or will have deployed a production system using Web Services technology by the end
of 2002. As part of this move to Web Services, "vendors are moving forward with
the technology and architecture elements underlying a Web Services application model,"
Gartner reports. While this model holds exciting potential, the added protocol layers
necessary to implement it can have a serious impact on application performance, causing
delays in development and in the retrieval of information for end users.
"Today Web Services play an increasingly prominent but changing role in the success
of enterprise software projects, but they can only deliver on their promise if they
perform reliably," said Steven Kolak, FirstACT product manager at Empirix. "With
its graphical user interface and extensive test-case generation capability, FirstACT
is the first Web Services testing tool that can be used by software developers or
QA test engineers. FirstACT tests the performance and functionality of Web Services
whether they are built upon J2EE, .NET, or other technologies. FirstACT 2.2 provides
the most comprehensive Web Services testing solution that meets or exceeds the changing
demands of organizations testing Web Services for performance, functionality, and
    functionality under load.”

    Simon,
I will admit, I almost never use SQL Developer. I have been a long time Toad user, but for this tool, I fumbled around a bit and got everything up and running quickly.
That said, I tried the new GeoRaptor tool using this tutorial (which is I think is close enough to get the jist). http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/georaptor/index.php?title=A_Gentle_Introduction:_Create_Table,_Metadata_Registration,_Indexing_and_Mapping
As I stumble around it, I'll try and leave some feedback, and probably ask some rather stupid questions.
    Thanks for the effort,
    Bryan
