Permisions issue

Hello all, I have an odd permision thing going on. I set my users permisions by adding NSumask of 2 in their .GlobalPreferences.plist. And for some time this has worked without fail, until the last few weeks, I am getting an increasing number of users that this is not working. For example I have a user that has his .GlobalPreferences.plist set correctly (2 for a default of 775), and when he created folders in the finder they are creating as 755. If he creates a folder or file in the terminal in the same place it will be correct. Also it seems that certain programs work while others do not. This is a new thing, Everything worked at one point. Does anyone know why this might be? Esspcially the finder?

Just to clarify, are you using "NSumask" or 'NSUmask"? The case matters, and the correct form is 'NSUmask' which sets the effective "umask" for GUI applications.
I don't think the 'NSUmask' can be directly applied to individual application ".plist" files (at least I couldn't get it to work in "Panther" when I played with it a while ago). However, the command line is an exception, since the plain old "umask" can be set somewhere in an initialization ("dot") file for whatever shell you happen to be using.
I only mention this because the two specific examples you mentioned, "Finder" and "Terminal", could potentially have different values set.

I've spent hours researching this error - Seems like many people have the same issue although there is no difinitive fix or known cause.
I'm hoping someone here has an answer.
Windows 7 Home Premium x64 OEM (HP)
This is not an upgraded Vista system.
It's not a specific driver related issue as it's the same response/effect be it graphics/chip set/usb/printer drivers.
Please dont suggest to flatten and re-install or run a repair install - It's not an option, I only have remote access to the unit
as it's currently in field use.
This is a machine specific issue - identical machine purchased at the same time and configured the same has no issue.
So the story.
User has been fine for weeks - no hardware of software changes except Windows Updates.
A Camera/USB connection that was working no longer does.
Tried in all USB ports
Plug in - windows announces found new hardware, tries to install drivers then fails
with "Windows found software for your device but encountered an error installing ...."
Device manager finds and identifies device although it is in the 'Unknown Device" category.
Manually updating drivers via search/internet or point directly at a driver has exactly the same effect.
Thinking this was just the camera drivers - I researched and downloaded new drivers from camera manufacturers sites
Fuji and Canon.
Same effect.
Deleted/uninstalled drivers completely, deleted/uninstalled all USB root hub and USB devices (hidden and visible)
SFC /Scannow finds no error
Cold boot finds USB and chipset(?) devices on boot attempts to reinstall then we get
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error installing"
So now I have no usb devices at all - memory stick/card reader/printer...... nada.
in fact if I try to update any device driver I get the same message generated.
Restore point does not help either.
After much trawling I found reference to a permisions issue and stale driver cache data.
(This is using an administrator account - not user with admin permissions?)
I'm willing to try anything at this time
I deleted the infcache.1 and other .dat files under c:\windows\system32\driverstore
Copied the usb .inf and .pnf from the appropriate FileRepository directory into c:\windows\inf
Uninstalled all the usb/unkown devices from device manager again.
Rebooted
Takes a little longer to boot as I take it it's rebuilding the driver cache then
a very short hurrah!!!
I can now use usb memory card and pen drives - no issue
Plug in a camera or printer...

Several attempt at this trying different driver versions.
It should not be vendor specific, the other field machine that works is using Microsoft drivers for these devices.
I even copied the drivers from one machine to the other - repeated everything above...

And then the nail in my sanity
Try windows update....
Reboot

but this time its different.
The device it thinks it cannot install is the generic MTP-PTP drivers (Photo Transfer Protocol -so am I getting somewhere)
so it still finds but cannot install.
The cameras are always found but appear as 'unknown devices' and cannot be accessed
Uninstall all USB/unkown again - reboot..
Same message and this time I've lost all the USB again.
Restore point to before Win Update gets me USB back again although I still have no cameras - so theres an update issue as well.
This has to be tied down to a file access/ registry problem although I'm loath to go cutting about without some guidance.
I'm no great believer in 'registry cleaners' unless anyone can point to a definitive/no ad's/sales version that really works.
As I said above, flattening/rebuild at this time is not an option - the user is not best pleased and I'm completley stumped.
If anyone has experienced(manu of you have) and fixed(still to find one) this issue please let me know how as soon as possible.

I know I am replying to an old thread - but I have the answer and resolved this error, and since this message comes up first in search results, and part of my answer came from this thread, I wanted to help someone else as this took an extra
12 hours and a lot of technical insight to resolve. See below for detailed explanation that others ask for above.
My original issue was that iTunes didnt reinstall. generating this error that said I am trying to access an unavailable network resource and to browse to find itunes64setup (again). This may partly have been due to me deleting old install version folders.
Research led me to completely uninstall apple products and reinstall per their instruction and fixed the issue with iTunes. see

The SAME error I had while updating itunes recurred while uninstalling it from my Windows 7 SP1 system...so I went to microsoft Fixit and attempted to correct and it properly uninstalled iTunes for me, which allowed the reinstall.
What didnt work was my USB web root/ root hub, which partly involved my older system and USB 1.0, and the delete/reinstall existing drivers with the c:\windows\winsxs folder as source of drivers (thank you Magon Liu!!!) which I had to figure out what/why
and how.
Then I had an intel chipset issue...my new Iphone wasn't recognizing in plug and play, and there was an error with installing the device drivers for my new iphone 6. Manual applications didn't work, even though a generic device showed in control panel -
device manager with a yellow !
Per above blog answer - I tried to remove and reinstall my USB controller or update the drivers (I have an Alienware M15 laptop - a few years old.) I discovered that the USB host controller - an Intel(R) 5 Series / 3400 Series Chipset family USB Enhanced
Host controller - (port) was not covered by current Intel chipset programs which are Series 6 and later, but did have an update (8/20/2009 v9.1.1.1020) that supported USB 2.0 (and therefore 3.0 backwards compatibility which as an issue with my new iPhone
and some USB thumb drives.) To find this I had to look at the Support - Downloads and Drivers - browse for drivers and somewhere found an option to look for older no longer supported drivers. I found infinst_autol.exe for my case.
Once downloaded I tried to install and failed. Found the log in C:\Intel\Logs and contains:

HERE'S THE ADDED EXPLANATION TO BRIAN'S POST THAT EXPLAINS THE SECURITY ISSUE:
This turned out to be an error for two reasons. First, after manually running the command in an "run as administrator" window (same error result), thinking it related to my anti-virus (turned that off/disabled firewall and A/V), and from this thread
granting my user administrative rights to files in an install folder and trying to reinstall inf files and drivers from C:\Windows\winsxs vs my copied infinst_autol.exe expansion (as found from log in C:\Users\David Samuels\AppData\Local\Temp\IPMx7\WIN7 folder).....that
there was an easier solution as the reason this error actually happens is a permissions problem.
To access the proper windows system folders - you have to be the TrustedInstaller service - not just in the administrator group...or you have to be the actual "Administrator" account. To become actual administrator on
your own laptop, Open a command window "run CMD.exe as administrator", then execute command
> net user administrator /active:yes
This creates a local PC Administrator account with no password. Coincidentally it has proper permissions to windows directories for installing drivers. Log in as this user, go to device manager and update the USB hub and any other drivers. if updating the
USB root - it doesn't replace it right away as the system cant disable the currently resident in memory "running" driver - you have to update, then restart the system, log in as administrator and repeat at the next lower layer that has issues.
Once completed - log in as yourself again and disable the administrator account in a command window with > net user administrator /active:no
This in my case enabled all my USB 2.0 and 3.0 devices on my originally only USB 1.0 laptop and everything else works properly again - I hope this helps many of you to resolve your own issues that were difficult to find and resolve and that got as far as

Database Access in limited user account

I have made an application in which I am communicating with database.
Let me explain about my application first.
1. Application starts and it asks for user name and password
2. After successful login data reading or writing from /to database.
All this information whether its data or user name or password, I am storing in same database but in different tables
Now If I login from limited user then I am able to login by entering user name and password but later I am not able to read/ write to database, but If I login from admin accout then everything runs smoothly.
This happened recently and I am sure this is permision issue..
Kudos are always welcome if you got solution to some extent.
I need my difficulties because they are necessary to enjoy my success.

There is obviously some security! If there wasn't any you would not get andy trouble to connect to your server with a normal user account.

OS X Server not saving my File Sharing settings

Hi there,
Hoping there is someone out there who can help as there are a few head scratching issues going on!
Basically the main issue I am getting is to do with File Sharing in OSX Server.
I have two raid servers set up with a mac mini server acting as the link to the main network. I use GlobalSan Xtarget to mount the Raids.
I have set up OSX Server primarily so that I can use the VPN function on the Mac Mini, otherwise it is a very simple set up. However, when I attempt to change the settings of my second raid, (As Displayed) clicking ok doesn't save the settings or infact close the window, it just does nothing, with no warning errors as to the reason why. What I am trying to do is remove allow guess users access to this share.
Now your probably thinking why don't I just remove the opportunity for a guest to log into the server, while yes this will work, it's just that I am getting other issues that I am wondering is linked to what is happening In OSX Server.
For instance, I have a Capture One Catalog archive which is supposed to link to a selected folder on my raids. One is for my commercial work, and one for personal. I have a raid for Commercial Work which works completely fine (All the images display and import into the catalog), and a raid for Personal Work (The raid with the file share issues in Server). When attempting to import the images from the Personal Raid, it doesn't recognise them, it knows they are there, but it doesn't recognise it as an image file. However, you can view them fine in Finder.
I thought it was maybe a Sharing and Permisions issue, so I matched the settings from the Commercial Raid with no success. So I am wondering if it is to do with this issue I am having In OSX Server.
To add to these points, I am also getting an Unknown User showing in the User list for the Commercial Raid, not that it seems to be causing a problem, but it is another thing thats happened since migrating the server from 10.8 to 10.9.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Ok so I've solved the Capture One Issue, it was due to the / in the Personal/Moving name of the Raid, so that is all fine.
But if anyone does know why server won't save the File Sharing issues, and the issues with the Unknown User, it will still be a great help!

Disk permissions messed up with latest update

I have a Mac Mini that started acting up after installing the latest Snow Leopard update (10.6.?). After downloading, installing and restarting it kept stalling on restart. The apple will show then immediately the screen will scroll a bunch of lines of unintelligible (to me) text and a warning box saying that this computer needs to be restarted and to hold down on the start button to shut it down and then restart. I do this and then it just keeps repeating. I then started up with my Snow :Leopard install disk. I used disk utility to verify disk, no problems, then I verify permissions, and a ton of issues pop up. I repair permissions, restart and the same thing happens on restart. So I thought the hard drive is messed up. This is a 4 year old computer, after all, and one that is almost always on. So I bought and installed a new 500GB Hitachi SATA hard drive, plus upgraded the RAM. I restored my system and files from Time Machine and then the same thing happened, the apple shows, and the restart stalls with those lines of text and a warning box saying I need to shut down and restart. So I installed the Snow Leopard from the disk, and everything was working fine, until I did the update again, and the same thing happened. Any suggestions? Do I just need to go and buy Lion, or is there a fix where I can install the latest update of Snow Leopard and not have it keep stalling on restart (I'm assuming this is all a disk permision issue, but not sure)

Crashes with iMac & Premiere-CC

I'm running Premiere-CC on iMac (i5 / 3,2 GHz / 24 GB RAM / Geforce GTX675MX with 1 GB RAM) with 10.9.1.
I have problems with different sorts of crashes.
Sometimes the iMac just freeze with a red pixel mosaic on my screen.
Sometimes it freeze with mac spinnwheel running in the middle of the screen.
Sometimes the iMac just get black.
Everytime I have to restart!
What's the Problem with my machine?

Seems that there is some permision issue with your account that is causing the issue.
Please try to login to root account on your imac and check if it working fine or not.

I checked the item and folder limits for the library and even though the library is huge it is within limits. The option is enable and the ICON is not grayed out. When I click New Folder icon nothing happens. I am able to create folders in libraries of other
sites.

Lets have these troubleshoot steps ?
What is your user permission for that library/site/collection ?
Can you create a new list / new library ?
Can you upload new document in same library
Does this happening newly created library ?
is it happening to any other subsite ?
is it happening to any other site colletion?
Did you try "new folder" from library tab from ribbon?
It is not permision issue / something else? what it is? javascript error?
did you try firefox/chrome/opera/safari?
any CEWP hidden ?

Missing Dashboad Item Menu

Hi All,
running OBIEE 11.1.1.3
all users (except weblogic user) are not able to see some menu items under the dashboard list (they see only the first item).
If the same users go throug Catalog Browser he is able to see and run the missing dashboards.
I'm sure it's not a permision issue beacause just restarting the presentation service everything works fine.

I have the same problem. I used to have rules but they no longer show up in the preferences panel. I had hoped that Leopard would fix it but it hasn't. Can someone post a screenshot of their preferences panel showing rules?

MacBook Pro Retina - iMove or iPhoto Won't Start

I just used the migration assistant to migrate my files from my old MacBook Pro to my new MBP Retina. It went smoothly, but I cannot run iPhoto or iMovie. When I click either icon neither application displays, and the icon in the dock has the white light underneath indicating the app is running. If I do a ps aux from the command line, I can see the the apps are running. But again, the applications are not visible at all.
Could it be a file/ownership or permissions issue?

It is defenataley not a file permision issue, because Mac's do need permisions to open applications, unlike Windows. One can actually cappy an Application From a Mac to another Mac, and it will run perfectly, the only problem is you will need the original Apple Id that purchased an item in order to update it.
You Can Try: right-clicking(ctr clicking) the applications at the dock and making sure windows are not hidden. (If it is hidden you shoud see a "show" option.
Replacing the apps. To do this copy the applications from the application folder to a USB, or other starage device. Go to : Macantosh HD > Library > Applicatoin Support > (iphoto) and (iLife) + (iLife Media Browser) + (iLifeSlideshow) and copy these files to your storage devise.
Replcae all of the files youve just copied onto your new MacBook.
If none of these work, please tell me.

10.7.3 - 10.7.4 major issues

Finally I am able to ask for help. Yesterday, my computer went to sleep and didn't wake up. I was running 10.7.3. I rebooted, and found the cursor frozen in the left hand corner. I rebooted again, no change. Then I tried a Pram and also repaired permissions two different ways, first the usual way, then the other way using the the built in restore utilites by pressing Apple R (?) I don't remember exactly but, I did a repair permission of just certain home folders. Anyway, then, I believe I started in safe mode and the cursor and other problems were fine. But, of course, it was safe mode. I then allowed the upgrade to take place - upgrading to 10.7.4 and then to Safari 6.0 ( I was running whichever one was previous).
It seemed to fix all problems. I didn't use the computer very much and perhaps watched a few minutes on Netflix before retiring fo the evening. THis morning, I watched some more netflix and it all was fine. Suddenly, after about an hour of viewing the film started to hang - up. It did this quite a few time. THen froze for good. I restarted safari and i believe it was back to normal. THen, it all happened again. So, i rebooted the computer. And problems solved, but, they returned.Then a more serious problem happened, NO SOUND, and up at the top of the computer screen, on the right hand side, where all the indicators are sound, wifi, etc. the sound seemed greyed out, there was a seperation between the Sound emblem and the other indicators..as if sound had been isolated...? THe Sound was all the way down and wouldn't budge. I went to Sound , through system preferences and MUTE was check and it was greyed out. So I shut down the computer, took off all power including battery pressed the start button for 60 seconds and retarted. The cursor was frozen again, then, I restarted again. THe same thing but, I found that I could navigate a bit with the arrows, I tried to get to applications, no luck...finally pressing the esc key and random other keys I freed up the cursor. Then, I gave up with video and began to seek answers, but, safari was acting eratic, it wouldn't load properly, and it seemed very slow, I would click on links in google and it seemed to hang up etc. I switched to chrome but, after a few minutes it seemed to have the same problems. Then, I opened Opera and although it wasn't perfect I was able to get to forums...of course, it wouldn't accept my password so I had to reset it - finally I'm here writing.
At one point yesterday, when I was trying to repair permisions ( Disk Utility) it told me 6 hours. later after using the other method, I was able to get it to also repair through Disk Utility and it was quite smooth. I did see a difference with Safari 6.0 at the beginning everything seemed to get faster. But, then problems started, I also found a reference to change to 32 bit which I did.
It's intolerable to have to watch video this way, to have so many glitches coming up, browsers freezing or not working correctly, the cursor freezing after startup - etc. etc. i have a new harddrive for at least 6 months...so I know it's not a hard ware problem...500 GB - still half empty. I"m running 4 GB of ram, the top amount for this MacBook Pro. i had a new mother board installed about 2 years back and had a new Super Drive installed as well. It's been working fantastically until now. Sorry for writing so much - but, it's very frustrating. YES I had a problem in 10.7.3 previous to upgrading, but, now the problem has come to 10.7.4...after less than 24 hours and the browsers being quirky tell me perhaps it's not just a Safari problem. I also upgraded to Adobe Flash 11. in this process ( before I had the issues with the video). I truly will appreciate all help. Thanks, Thomas

Both my laptop and desktop tend to use up all the memory (4 GB) if I leave them overnight. Word, Mail, and my CRM all grow to 200 MB+, Chrome uses 200 MB plus 40-80 MB per window, and in the mornng there's only 30-40 MB available.

Intermittently having issue sending scans to networked directory folder HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g

Hello All,
I have a printer installed an AIO HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g which is cappable of scanning either by flatbed or feeder to a networked drive/folder. For the most part this works fine, however 2 times out of 10 it produces the following error;
"Cannot connect to \\'Server details\Folder location path'. Make sure the remote computer is turned on."
Now I have seen many post about disabling the filewall and other, however none of this type after an install.
Some obvous checks have been made already, Network cable replace, Changing of the destination folder location, and reseting the password for the scanner to auth as well as confirming the permisions. And each time the tests via the web console and physical tests work fine though this doesn't last.

From your description, it sounds like the issue is intermittent. It can sometimes be challenging to identify the root cause of an issue when the problem is not consistent, but I am happy to work with you towards a solution. I suspect the issue might have something to do with the network. I know you said you have tried a new cable and done some troubleshooting already but bear with me here.
When you say you replaced the cable, do you have an Ethernet cable connected between the printer and the router? if not, then I wonder if there is some sort of interference on your wireless connection. Is your router is a dual band router broadcasting both 2.4 and 5.0 frequency? The printer only works on 2.4GHz, maybe this is the root cause.
The channel your router is set to can impact your network consistency too. For example, if you are on channel 11 and others in your area are also on channel 11 or even 9 or 10 it causes congestion on that channel. Think of the channel like a highway or interstate, the more cars on that highway/interstate, the slower you go due to congestion, if you are on a highway with less people are on it, it is more like smooth sailing! You can print a network configuration page to see what channel you are using and see what channel others in your area are no. If the higher channels are most common you might consider changing yours to 1, 2, or 3, and visa versa. How to: Printing a Network Configuration Page.
has this ben an issue since you have had the printer or did it recently start happening? If this only recently started, can you think of anything that changed recently? Do you have only one access point (router) or do you have a secondary router or extender? Can you think of anything that might be interfering with your network, and do you find the issue occurs more at a certain time of the day than others?
I found on my network at home, I was often seeing delays in response time in the early evening because others are coming home from school and work and 'clogging up the channel', I changed the channel and have had little to no issue since.

Permission issues with new hard drive

Apple installed a new hard drive on my fairly new (june2012) MBP. The only backup I had was the time machine backup from the old MBP that I originally migrated from. Apple said no worries - I can restore from that so I did.
Today I bought an iphone. (I was a hold out, I'm all things mac since the 80s except the phone). I went in to clean up my Contacts before syncing the new phone to my MBP and I couldn't delete and contacts or groups. So I did a "get info" on my contacts ap and it didn't even have (user/me) on the list as a user. I added myself, gave me the read and write" capability and still can't make the needed changes, deletions or anything in Contacts, so I decided to check permissions using Disk Utility. I repaired permissions, and just to be sure verified permissions again. What a lllloooonnnggg list of issues and nothing has changed. Hit "repair permisions again and it is taking f o r e v e r. Now I am Verifying Disk to see what it says. No problem. Verify Permissions again - did it faster, but still a bunch of problems found. Repaired permissions again - same old thing - says its repairing, but I seriously doubt it. Am I supposed to do this over and over again?

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select

from the menu bar.
