OS X Server not saving my File Sharing settings

Hi there,
Hoping there is someone out there who can help as there are a few head scratching issues going on!
Basically the main issue I am getting is to do with File Sharing in OSX Server.
I have two raid servers set up with a mac mini server acting as the link to the main network. I use GlobalSan Xtarget to mount the Raids.
I have set up OSX Server primarily so that I can use the VPN function on the Mac Mini, otherwise it is a very simple set up. However, when I attempt to change the settings of my second raid, (As Displayed) clicking ok doesn't save the settings or infact close the window, it just does nothing, with no warning errors as to the reason why. What I am trying to do is remove allow guess users access to this share.
Now your probably thinking why don't I just remove the opportunity for a guest to log into the server, while yes this will work, it's just that I am getting other issues that I am wondering is linked to what is happening In OSX Server.
For instance, I have a Capture One Catalog archive which is supposed to link to a selected folder on my raids. One is for my commercial work, and one for personal. I have a raid for Commercial Work which works completely fine (All the images display and import into the catalog), and a raid for Personal Work (The raid with the file share issues in Server). When attempting to import the images from the Personal Raid, it doesn't recognise them, it knows they are there, but it doesn't recognise it as an image file. However, you can view them fine in Finder.
I thought it was maybe a Sharing and Permisions issue, so I matched the settings from the Commercial Raid with no success. So I am wondering if it is to do with this issue I am having In OSX Server.
To add to these points, I am also getting an Unknown User showing in the User list for the Commercial Raid, not that it seems to be causing a problem, but it is another thing thats happened since migrating the server from 10.8 to 10.9.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advanced.
Aaron

Ok so I've solved the Capture One Issue, it was due to the / in the Personal/Moving name of the Raid, so that is all fine.
But if anyone does know why server won't save the File Sharing issues, and the issues with the Unknown User, it will still be a great help!
Many thanks,
Aaron

  • PSE not saving edited files to the organiser

For no apparent reason my PSE 11 application seems to have developed an annoying glitch whereby part way through an editing process it stops doing as requested in the "Save" options, by not saving edited files as version sets of the original file in the Organiser. The files are saved OK to My Pictures and I then get advised that a file is available to import and I have to import each one, stack it with the original, and put the edited file on top. This is driving me nuts as I have about 1000 photos to edit. What is causing this problem? My only thoughts are that I have c.30000 picture files in the Organiser (but this hasn't caused any problems in adding new files)  and that the problem seems to have arisen since I started editing files directly from within an Album.
    Help

It's the first time I see that bug mentionned in PSE11, but it's an acknowledged bug in PSE12.

  • Is FTP server better than common file sharing

what is better : ftp server or common file sharing on server
i need to convince the management that ftp server is better than file sharing on server but i need some strong security points.

    I agree on DropBox.
In DropBox, Favorite (Star) the files (documents, MP3...) when you are on-line.  They will be available when you are off-line. Test access to your files in Airplane mode before you leave home.
To bring the document into an app (e.g., Pages), use 'Open In..'..  the MP3, you can just tap in DropBox.
There are solutions to get files back from different apps to DropBox, but honestly it is probably just easiest to email it to yourself (and then use your Mac to copy the final file back to DropBox for reference purposes).
    Have a good vacation.

  • Question on File Sharing Settings For Windows 7

Should be a simple question.  Am just switching over from Windows 2000, SQL 2000, IIS 6, and CF7 TO:  Win 7 SP1 64-bit, SQL 2008, CF 9 and IIS 7.
Just installed IIS 7.5 on the new Win 7 machine (my development PC for creating/testing CF pages), and included the IIS 6 compatibility components.  However, web pages are not being displayed.
Question:  With Windows 7, do you have to remove the checkmark in Folder Options for "USE SHARING WIZARD", as you had to do with Windows XP's "SIMPLE FILE SHARING"?
In WinXP, by removing SIMPLE FILE SHARING, it brought up the WEB SHARING tab when you right-clicked a folder, allowing you to run your local web pages.  Is this how it should be with Windows 7, in order to get my "localhost" web pages to dispay?
Lastly, if I do need to make this change, will it have any impact on File Sharing settings I've already made with my router, to allow FILE SHARING between laptop and desktop, via the router?
    Thanks much for the advice.
    Gary

    Some extra info:
The difference between edited files from a mac and from a windows machine is that files from a mac have "everyone read only" and from a windows machine have "everyone no access" (besides the normal spotlight, users, etc. Those are the same).
So it seems that there's a difference in permissions based on mac/windows, even with the same user?

  • Cant store file sharing settings

I activated file sharing on my macbook Pro, but the settings (Folder and users) are not stored.
Always when I quit system preferences and open it again, the folder is there, but the user settings are gone.
    Any idea?

Ok, try deleting this file. com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file to the Desktop. Launch System Preferences. Try to save the File Sharing settings and Quit System Preferences. If this works, drag that .plist file to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.
If it doesn't help, just drag it back to the Preferences folder.

  • Sent items from a shared mailbox are not saved with the shared mailbox

I'm experiencing an issue regarding the sent items from a shared mailbox.
The users would like the items Sent on Behalf of a shared mailbox to be saved within this shared mailbox.
At this moment, the Sent Items are saved in the users own mailbox.
We have a single Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 (Version 14.3 Build 123.4) and Users connecting the Exchange Server are using Microsoft Outlook 2007 (12.0.6680.5000) SP3 MSO.
The user is granted full access permissions on the shared mailbox, and also has "Send on Behalf" permissions on the mailbox. The mailbox is setup as an "online" mailbox, so it doesn't use cached mode.
I tried the following solutions mentioned in the various KB's and technet articles:
Configuring the "DelegateSentItemsStyle" registry setting for this user (using a GPO)
Configured the "Get-MailboxSentItemsConfiguration" cmdlet for this user
Logged on to OWA and changed the "Sent Items" settings to save the sent items in both mailboxes
None of these settings worked, not combined and neither seperately.
Is there anyone who can help me resolving this issues?
    Thanks in advance,
    Roy Schottmans

I am using a shared mailbox (with a disabled account) where I get sent items and also deleted items placed in the right folders.
I think it’s just a matter of how you configure Outlook. It works well for me in both Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013, cached mode and also online mode. You can add a shared mailbox to your Outlook profile in at least two ways where one of them doesn’t work
    but the other does.
If you add the shared mailbox via the File tab/Account settings/New/ and just enter the e-mail address of the shared mailbox in the Auto Account Setup page. No name, no password, just the e-mail address and click Next and voila “Your e-mail account is successfully
configured”. After restarting Outlook you will find the shared mailbox below your own in the left pane.
If you click the inbox ones in the shared mailbox and then open a new mail you will see the shared mailbox display name in the From field. After sending the mail you will see the mail in the Sent Items folder of the shared mailbox. If you delete a mail in
the shared mailbox you will see it in Deleted items folder of the shared mailbox.
The prerequisits for this is that you have “full access” and “send as” rights of the shared mailbox.
This was accomplished without using the Set-MailboxSentItemsConfiguration command.
    We are running Exchange 2010 SP3 RU4.

  • Not just another file sharing thread......

Running a forum search gives me a plethora of file sharing threads. Most of these threads are a one answer type of question or a simple "Preferences>Sharing>File Sharing type of answer. I am no expert here, I learn something every time I visit, but I know the basics of file sharing after nearly 20 years of using macs. I have a network set up at my business and home that the computers share and am perfectly comfortable with the basics. I would really like a discussion about more creative options available to expand what I am currently using.
We have four macbook pros here. Two are personal only and the other two are business/personal. The two business MBP's are the ones we use the most, they are the primary machines which go from work to home. Right now they share files but up until now have really been set up for their own workstations for 2 different jobs. Now, we are starting to blend a little bit more of our work and we have had the need to share more files with the 2 computers. It's gotten to a point where basic file sharing isn't enough. The problem I am having is that both computers aren't always within airport range of each other, and both computers aren't always on or awake. So, it's become annoying to have to make sure the machine with the files I need is awake and nearby. So, we have recently started using dropbox to share files that way. The only issue with that is that many of our files are sensitive in nature and security is a bit of a risk. So, I am encrypting volumes with PGP and sharing the encrypted volumes via dropbox. So far it's not been an issue with having the same files open at the same time on both computers to avoid conflicts, I think we'll be ok for awhile. But as this data collection grows, I think it will become impractical. The thing I really like about using dropbox is that both computers don't need to be running at the same time since the files are stored locally and the changes are synced online. Even if I am traveling with one computer, I will usually have an internet connection so the files will update on my partner's computer when I make changes. This is the ultimate in portability and syncing. But like I said, it may become impractical when we put 30-40 Gigs of data up and we can't so easily keep track of what's open on which computer.
So, I would like to know what others do at work or home to share necessary files between multiple computers, other than typical OS X file sharing techniques. I know some applications have a checkout type of feature which might help for certain types of files, but I really want a simple universal setup that my partners and employees can learn without having to think about what type of file they are working with. I have quite a bit of server space I can use for storage of files online if it would help, but syncing would be an issue.
Dropbox may just be the best option for me to share and sync from multiple locations. It makes sense! I just hope some users here have some other recommendations that might work!

    Allan Eckert wrote:
As to the PGP questions, as long as you have a file from the DropBox attached and are doing updates they are being sent to the copy on the DropBox. The updates are not all held until you unmount it.
Actually, I'm seeing otherwise. I just ran a test to be sure. I held a pgp disk open for about 5 minutes while copying files to and removing from it. I watched the dropbox folder and the upload activity the whole time and saw no activity or change. The moment I ejected the volume, network activity jumped up and the folder icon in my dropbox turned from synced to syncing in progress. It actually seems to work quite well. The problem I have with it is that if I need to use large files, it will take a long time to upload, because doesn't the whole encrypted volume need to be uploaded again for any minor changes? I haven't tested anything larger than about 20MB, so it's hard to tell.
The drop copy application might actually be quite useful if I were running a file server. I would certainly need an easy to use interface for the actual sharing of the files. If I do go that route, I would prefer for the ability to be able to lock files. As Allan said, drop copy doesn't have that feature, unfortunately.
So, there really isn't a well known solution for this type of application, huh? I may just have to reorganize my plan and stick to removable media for the shared data. If there is only one copy, it can't get mixed up. The only issue I have is when I'm not on premises, how do I share the data with the office? I suppose I will just have to have a better handle on what I need and make sure to have it with me and use dropbox or ftp to upload the files back and forth from office to user.
I just did a test with a decent size PGP virtual disk (125MB) I added one small 3MB jpg file to it and it did an incremental update to sync the file very quickly. I don't know how it's able to do it, but it's doing it. I would have thought it would have to update the whole disk every time, but I guess not. Maybe PGP and dropbox is a better solution that I ever imagined it to be.

  • Got Connect to Server to work again, file sharing 4.9 to 10.1.5!!!

    Folks:
Have a number of unanswered questions lost on this forum, and been following as many of the threads pertaining to file sharing as possible--and finally pieced some of the suggestions, mostly from BDAqua, together and got the two units to connect. Before this I got "Log In Failed" or "Connection failed" error windows. Haven't had time to actually move files, but I did open some JPEG's from the 10.1 computer in the 10.4.9 . . . what got it working doesn't totally make sense--but it worked.
When I first posted my issue after erase & upgrade from 3.9 to 4.9 BD asked me if I had another User in account to do some testing with--and I said yes, but what will that do? And he said, ah, you could test things . . . wasn't real encouraging--I think I logged into one new account and tried to connect and it FAILed. Went on to the "roll the AppFileServer kext back to 4.8 version--didn't work. Kept whining--eventually everybody stopped replying. Then I saw another comment by BDAqua answering someone about some issue with having the same user name when trying to use File sharing; that was awhile back.
Today--put those ideas together and logged both computers into the other user and then used Connect to Server, entering IP address--got the Log In window--put password in and--IT CONNECTED, but only to a "Drop Box" folder that I didn't have "privileges" to open. Following another thread's idea I changed both of those accounts to "allow user to administer computer" in Acounnts. In Tiger I had to log back into the main account to do that--and then I tried to connect, and that time it worked. The most important thing is having another user name to enter--and then I could get access to the HD of either computer. Still some things to work on--going from the iBook to the iMac I can open all files, going from the iMac back to the iBook I can mount the HD, but some of the original files in my Home folder have red minus's and can't be opened. What was odd is that both of my other user accounts have the same name/password, but I could connect; but couldn't with the main accounts--having the same name/password. When I changed those extra accounts into admin also and then logged back into main accounts--I connected by using the name/password of the OTHER account in the second computer.
The Key is as BD "recalled seeing somewhere" that the User name should be different, so you can use another account on that computer. In Panther it didn't matter if both computers had the same name--in Tiger apparently it does. Hope this helps--took me a lot of messing/time to bring all the details together--1.5 months. A head's up from Apple might have been--nice???

    Rick/BDAq:
Verbosity doesn't really begin to cover it--that was the short version of the process. 1.5 months ago had 15 posts--100 posts later a solution was developed. Don't know if rolling back the kext to 4.8 is needed--won't get a chance to try doing a full install of 4.9 + Security update on my Ext HD to test what is really necessary. Or whether it is necessary to make the New Account an administrator or not; when they connected it was so surprising and so simple. I'd like to find the thread where it shows how to change the original User Name for the admin/computer & see if that is all that is needed. Like all creative people I named my units after me, my name. Now I'd like to change one to be "Johnny" or I'll name it "Tiger" after all the fiddling it's taken to find such a simple solution--I've grown attached to my OS. : - 0
Haven't had the chance to check the link to Hornware--thanks Rick, but Firefox couldn't find the server. BD--thanks for being there, buddy.

  • SQL Profiler running trace - where do the rows go if not saved to file

When SQL Profiler trace is running, there are thousands of rows generated and shown in the trace window. Since I am only looking for deadlocks, I am not saving them. Are they just discarded, else where do all those rows go? I really don't want to fill
    up the log file.

From your description, it seems you are running Profiler while saving events to a file.  All of the displayed events are also written to the file.  If you don't need events other than deadlocks, you should not include those in the trace to begin
    with.
Be aware that a Profiler trace can significantly degrade server performance when many events are captured.  If you must capture a large number of events (or run a trace continuously), I suggest a server-side trace (or Extended Events file target)
instead.  This will allow SQL Server to stream data directly to the trace file without the Profiler tool overhead.  You can script the Profiler trace for server-side tracing from the Profiler File-->Export menu.  Save and customize the
script (file name, max file size, etc.).  You can view the trace file(s) using Profiler or fn_trace_gettable.

  • Users not disconnected from file sharing

After log out of a network user the user is still connected in file sharing. After some time users have multiple connections in file sharing when they are not logged in. It seems to have a negative impact on performance and problems with e-mail.
    Anybody with the same problem?

I have been running Mavericks server about 5 weeks now and I can report that some things have improved slightly. However WGM was throwing plug in errors every time I tried to edit a users data or change a password etc. so I had nothing to lose by doing some basic housekeeping so I repaired the permissions for the server's main HD. The list of permission repairs was colossal. After this rather than restart I fully shut down the Xserve and rebooted holding the shift key to "Safe Boot" after which I rebooted as normal. This clears out various caches and such as below>
It forces a check of the startup volume, just like the First Aid feature of Disk Utility.
It loads only required kernel extensions.
It disables all fonts installed by the user.
It moves font caches to the Trash that are stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/  – where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501.
It disables all startup items and login items.
The results were great, WGM was fully operational again and the users logged in on File Sharing pane in Server app were disconnecting as they should when they logged off. Its early days yet but everything seems a lot more stable than before. The Users section in Server app still wont let me edit or add users so i still rely on WGM for this so I think this is a definite bug in Server app. I say this because I created a brand new fully working Mavericks server from scratch  as an experiment and with only one network user created on the OD after a day or so the editability and being able to add new users on Server app was lost. This behaviour has been happening on Lion through to Mavericks so I dread the day when we lose WGM etc. and have to rely on Profile Manager

  • Files on external disk connected to TC not available when File-sharing activated?!

    Dear all,
I use a TC 1st generation. I have attached a WD Book external drive to the TC which works as a separate "server" for the family documents and photo's. This set-up worked perfectly until I this week formatted the WD and re-installed it. Now the files on the WD are not available through the TC.
    Done:
I have connected the WD Book directly to my Windows 7 machine: WD Book visible including a station ID (:E) and name. Files all available. Check.
I have connected the WD Book directly to my MacBook: WD Book visible including a station ID (:E) and name. Files all available. Check.
In the Airport configuration program the WD Book is visible as an extrenal disk, but there appears no name or station ID (:E). Instead it shows the specs of the WD Book. (298 GB WD 3200 JB external....) This is the main problem in my opinion? Something in the TC causes the WD Book not to be available.
Furthermore I have clicked the box for file sharing, with password, plus sharing via WAN in the Airport Configuration Program.
I hope someone can help me.
    Thanks,
    Paul

You asked the question and then answered it.
.. ughhhh!!!  >> Why is that?
    This is why..
the whole situation occurred when I had formatted my drive from FAT32 to NTFS since the FAT32 would not allow for large documents such as the export of my Outlook files as .pst. (14GB)
FAT32 is old without large file capability and without indexing. It is simply too old for modern usage.
Furthermore the only reason for me to move the disk was for testing purposes.
OK.. but attached to the TC.. the disk can save 14GB files no problems in HFS+ format from a PC. There is no need to do anything else.
If you want a large disk for backing up windows buy a new drive. And format it NTFS and plug it into the windows PC and leave it there.

  • How do I set up file sharing in Lion Server to work like file sharing in Lion Client?

I've just installed Lion Server on my home iMac to enable remote access via VPN to my home network.
When the iMac was running Lion Client (before the upgrade to server), and when File Sharing was enabled on the iMac; when other Macs on the LAN connected to the iMac via AFP, they were always able to connect to (share) any mounted external volumes (external USB or FireWire drives connected to the iMac). e.g.
Now that I've upgraded to Lion Server, when other Macs on the LAN connected to the iMac via AFP they are only able to connect to (share) the sharepoints listed in the File Sharing pane of Server.app. e.g.
Is there any way to set up File Sharing in Lion Server so that it works the same way as it does in Lion Client with respect to mounted external volumes? i.e. they are automatically shared? I know I can add each volume manually to File Sharing in Server.app but this gets tedious.
    Many thanks!

I normally have a Firewall enabled. I recently had to do an erase and install of Lion, followed by a one-by-one re-install of all of my software. One of the first things I did was to set up all of my System Preferences the way I like them; Turning the Firewall on was one of them. Later I noticed it was off and turned it on again. I had already set up sharing and was surprised to see the problem when I turned it back on.
As to why do I think it needs to be on. It is another part of my security layer.
