Permissions nightmare

OK,  I am going a bit nuts here.
I have a combination of problems with my current  Installation.
I am going to list it out.
First I migrated my 10.5.9 computer over to my new Imac 10.6.7. As the new computer was purchased on my wife's credit card, the online registration set up the new computer's user with my wife's name and my .mac identity. This caused the new computer's profile to differ from the old computer's info, so I had wild permissions conflicts.  It was the whole issue of an additional permissions line, with EVERYONE - CUSTOM. All the files on the desktop had these modified permissions.
Went in and fixed all the user profile name info, but still had the problem.
I ran the terminal to (sudo chmod -R - N ~), can't quite remember the exact syntax, but it worked.  All the permission on the desktop appeared to be correct.
Good news, right?  Don't get too happy.
I was looking through my apps permissions and can you believe it, some still had the EVERYONE - CUSTOM line.  Tried the Terminal command.  No go.  Applied the permissions of the Apps folder to all sub-items and it worked. I did a permissions repair and it put them all back to how it is in the picture.
So  the core applications, with wheel permission, still have EVERYONE-CUSTOM permissions (quicktime player, time machine , system preferences, stickies, safari, preview, itunes)
Anyone have an idea about how to fix these few items?

Then here's my suggestion. Do your migration again. Be sure you migrate everything including your old Home folder. After the migration has completed be sure the migrated account has admin authority, then log out of the account you are now using and log into the migrated account. All your permissions should be correct. Delete the old account.
You cannot simply modify an account in it's entirety. It's a complicated process.

  • SharePoint 2010 Item level permissions nightmare...how do I escape this madness?

We have a custom SharePoint 2010 application that helps process job req. documents from 200+ partner companies. Each company can only see its own job req. documents (done using item level permissions in one document library).
The number of documents is getting close to 3k. I've read that once you get over 5k, you'll see a huge performance hit because of the number of unique security scopes.
Creating 200+ libraries is out of the question. That just seems like an even bigger logistical nightmare...especially since we add partners every month almost. We have reports that run off of this data and querying that many libraries would be nuts.
Next would be making folders for each company. A lot of recoding would need to be done, but my biggest concern will be not being able to sort and filter properly.
I've tried writing a PowerShell script to copy everything into folders in a new library and the filtering doesn't work even after messing around with the view to not show the folders at all.
The last thing I'm considering is just archiving older data that may no longer be relevant by year or something.
Has anyone else run into a similar issue?
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
Once you have exceeded the threshold limit, certainly there will be performance issues. However, you can still iterate though lists/libraries that exceed threshold limit by workaround here:
    List Threshold
Additionally, please refer following link which demonstrates how you can implement sorting/paging for lists exceeding threshold limit:

  • Permissons nightmare,need help

    As if this ever ends:
My interns were telling me that the files they were trying to work on over my network they could not save, read only.
So I went to the folder on my imac that has all the folders I use over my network, changed the folder to allow everyone read/write. I click the little triange to appy to all enclosed items.
Now every file in this folder says: everyone read/write
    So far so good.
But when I open the file on my laptop via the network, it command i says:
unknown (greyed out)- read and write
and below that: everyone - no access.
    Any help appreciated. thanks!

Should I go now and make the three folders preceeding it everyone read/write, and apply to all enclosed items -- or am opening up a can or worms.
Glenn is right about the Shared folder. That's what it's meant for, to share files.
I'm telling the computer I want all files in this folder to be read/write?
    Try telling it this way...
If you really want everyone to have access to your folder in /Documents
Launch Terminal and at the prompt type
    chmod 777(leave a space)
Then drag the folder you want to change permissions on (Lists) into the Terminal window.
It will show the entire file path.
    Press Return.

  • This is what I did:           permissions nightmare

This is what I did (and why)
Why: I want my wife an I to have full access to each other's documents, music, etc.
    What I did:
    -made new administrator account
-changed 'Sharing and permissions' on my files (MacHD\Users\ME)
-added my wife with read/write permissions
    -applied to enclosed items
-removed 'staff' as a user (don't ask why)
    -applied to enclosed items
Well there you have it. I screwed up the permissions on every folder on my main user account. Software is acting funny. Battlefield 2142 won't even think about running.
Is there a method to fixing this?
How do I back up my files without keeping the screwed up permissions.
    -Mark

yes, there is a method to fixing it but don't do it again. sytem created folders often have hidden 'deny delete ACLs" and using "apply to enclosed items button propagates them to everything inside.
    First use this [link|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1334?viewlocale=en_US].
This will almost fix it. Unfortunately, the ACL resetting tool on the leopard install DVD is buggy itself (this is not mentioned in that link) and messes up the group ownership on everything it touches.
Therefore, once you are done, run the following terminal command:
    chgrp -R `id -gn` ~
Post back if you have further problems.

  • Repaired permissions, now my iMac wants a password to delete anything.

I just repaired permissions on my computer (general maintenance), and now when I try to delete something from my desktop it asks for a password. I never set one on my account in the first place. I also need one to delete off the server in Adobe Bridge. How do I fix this?

  • Using a partition to share files among multiple computers?

I have a small business with just a few employees and we currently share all of our business files which are hosted on my Macbook Pro.  These files include an Aperture library, an iPhoto library, and a bunch of just plain old files, including a fairly large Filemaker database. I like having these files on my computer so that I can access them quickly (without lag), and this is particularly important for the database and the photo libraries.  And since I am often working 'after hours' its easy for me to be on the move (even if its just a move to my couch!) and still have quick and easy access to the work files.
However, we're having some major problems with file permissions. Sometimes (and seemingly randomly) employees can't open files because they don't have permission' and often I need to reset the permissions on files my employees create in order to open them myself.  iPhoto needs to "repair" the photo library just about any time a different user opens it up.  It looks like we just lost a couple hours worth of work yyesterday tagging photos in iPhoto since they mysterously dissapeared when I opened iPhoto this morning.
So we need a solution that will get us around this permissions nightmare.  I read one suggestion about putting iPhoto/Aperture libraries on an external HD and sharing them that way, however, totting a hard drive around might get akward, especially if I am working after hours, and I Don't know that it solves our issue with the rest of our work files.  At this point I would be willing to invest in a Mac Mini server if that would solve some problems, but that would probably leave me with slower access to the files than I currently enjoy.
So the thought came to me, why don't I partition my hard drive and use half of it for all the work files?  Could I set it up so permissions are ignored on that partitions as is reccommened for the external HD solution?  Are there other solutions, or pitfalls with this solution that I'm not considering?

    ArisaemaDracontium wrote:
I'd like to use the method described in the following link.  Can I do this with a partition instead of an external drive?:
    Yes.
Can I partition my drive without whiping it entirely and then having to restore everything?
Probably.  See #3 in Using Disk Utility.
Also, the "Alternative Method" mentions using a disk image.  My experience with disk images is limited to those temporary "disks" used when installing new software that are erased when put in the trash or the computer restarts.  Is there such thing as a perminent disk image?
Yes.  You can create and keep them anywhere.  They're kind of like a disk-within-a-disk.  They have their own format, directories, etc.  For example, some folks use encrypted disk images for their sensitive files.
    There are a few considerations:
Only one user can access it at a time, so if you use Fast User Switching and one user has it open, others won't be able to use it.
You'll need to put it in each user's Login Items so it will be mounted at login, per the article.
The contents will not be backed-up while it's mounted.
(But, in many cases the iPhoto Library won't be backed-up by Time Machine while the iPhoto app is open, no matter where it is.)

  • How can I get the love back?

Remember the anthem in 1984? The call for independence? The hammer that shattered the drone which kept us all in line - servants to the man? I do. I begged the hammer to be thrown and cheered when the glass shattered. I evangelized for the awakening and paid with my ducketts and  dreams. I have given the wry smile to poor lemmings who followed Bill's way and stepped in line. I was proud to know I'd avoided the man. I was me, not them. But I worry that I've fed the beast. Have I been an unknowing servant to something worse? Have I been so blind to miss that I was beholden, but with a loose collar and long leash? I hope not ... Apple please help me see I haven't been wrong with every keystroke on my IIe, IIci, Bondi, iPods, MBPs, Airs and more. Send me a sign. Show me the light again. Set me free again.
iCloud, iTunes Match, Macs, iPods, iPhones and family do not work together. Period. You see, my wife, two children and I were .Mac users on a family account - we each had / have .mac email addresses which have become our AppleIDs. We happily purchased and shared (within the family) bazillions of dollars worth of music, video and apps together and under our own accounts. We all enjoyed our independence from one-another and from you. And it all worked well. Very well. But now you've gone and thrown it all away. Nothing works well.
We've had to merge new purchases to a new "family" AppleID.
Updating iOS apps on our iPhones requires entering EACH of our four (ahem, now five) AppleIDs and passwords.
Sharing music and using Match meant centralizing to one library, centralizing playlists, effing up syncing, and creating a permissions nightmare on our shared iMac that houses the master music library. (now iTunes fails to open if one user account forgot to close iTunes before not logging out.)
Sigh. There more but I'm exhausted.
This is a nightmare. I'm now dad and IT guy for the family. Remember when using a Mac meant you didn't need an IT guy? I want those days again. I don't want to feel powerless under the thumb of the man. Like I need to get OSX or iOS certified. Seriously? Certified?
Apple: just get it right. For gods sake. Fix this cloud debacle. Give families who willingly, happily, legally used .Mac together - the familial womb for which the next Apple revolution will either prosper or wither and die - the same independence they / we had before the cloud and the match.
I'd settle if you would Sync our purchases to a single account at the very least. At least that would suck less.
Give us the chance to love you again. Fix this please. Please?

Thanks. I appreciate your help. But that's not quite what's happening. Here are the specifics of our scenario:
    Our accounts then:
[email protected] was the master account.
[email protected] was a secondary account.
[email protected] was a secondary account.
[email protected] was a secondary account.
Secondary accounts were subordinate by way of mobile me, family accounts if you will.
    On our shared iMac then:
User dad had a [email protected] iTunes library.
User mom had a [email protected] iTunes library.
User kid1 had a [email protected] iTunes library.
User kid2 had a [email protected] iTunes library.
The libraries were stored in the /user/music/itunes folders for each user.
Purchases were made on each user's library.
The media / content (videos and music) was shared between the libraries and stored on a shared drive. The apps were stores in each user's /user/music/itunes folder.
[email protected] was used for all OSX app store purchases on the Mac by each user.
    On our iOS devices then:
On dad's iPhone, [email protected] was used for everything.
On mom's iPhone, [email protected] was used for everything.
On kid1's iPod, [email protected] was used for everything.
On kid2's iPhone, [email protected] was used for everything.
The iOS devices were sync'd with each /user/music/itune's iTunes library.
We each had unique playlists and our own apps.
Purchases were made on each iOS device.
So, each user was fully independant in terms of purchasing and use.
The dilemma: iTunes Match (and iCloud) cannot sync four libraries unless there are four independant iTunes Match accounts. This would forever divide our family. Yes, it's that dramatic. (smile)
So, with advice from upper-level Apple Tech Support, I made a master account with a new AppleID: [email protected]. This account would become the hub for iTunes Match and all future purchases on iOS and OSX devices.
    Now we look like this:
    Our accounts now:
[email protected] is the master account.
[email protected] is a user account.
[email protected] is a user account.
[email protected] is a user account.
[email protected] is a user account.
The master account is assigned to OSX app, Match and iTunes.
User accounts are linked to mail / cal / find my / etc. activities.
    On our shared iMac now:
[email protected] is the shared iTunes library.
User dad shares [email protected] iTunes library.
User mom shares [email protected] iTunes library.
User kid1 shares [email protected] iTunes library.
User kid2 shares [email protected] iTunes library.
The [email protected] iTunes library is located on a shared drive.
As a side note, the permissions now get totally muffed up when any user forgets to close their iTunes account and another user opens their iTunes client ... sharing the same library. A nice little bonus I wasn't prepared for.
Purchases are made through the [email protected] library.
Apps have been consolidated (from each /user/music/itunes folder) to the now shared folder.
    * Old apps are owned by the users. New apps are owned by [email protected]. Updates require the owner's AppleID / password.
** If a user AppleID is entered in iTunes to update his apps, Match is broken. Match gets reset when [email protected] signs in again.
[email protected] is used for all OSX app store purchases on the Mac by each user.
** Old apps are owned by [email protected]. New apps are owned by [email protected]. Updates require the owner's AppleID / password.
    On our iOS devices now:
On dad's iPhone, [email protected] is used for mail / cal / etc.; [email protected] is used for music / match / iTunes.
On mom's iPhone, [email protected] is used for mail / cal / etc.; [email protected] is used for music / match / iTunes.
On kid1's iPod, [email protected] is used for mail / cal / etc.; [email protected] is used for music / match / iTunes.
On kid2's iPhone, [email protected] is used for mail / cal / etc.; [email protected] is used for music / match / iTunes.
The iOS devices are sync'd to [email protected] iTunes library.
Purchases are made on each iOS device to [email protected].
    * We now have shared playlists and everyone's apps.
So, each user is now not fully independant in terms of purchasing and use.

  • New life for old iMac

My Dad still uses his circa 1998 iMac Rev. D tray loader, since I've kept it alive and up to date by replacing its dead CD-ROM drive from one I bought on eBay, installing more memory (256 MB I think), and OS updates through Panther. He's a cheapskate like me and doesn't want to shell out $1000 for a new iMac. However, lately he's complained this dinosaur was starting to run slow, no surprise since even with a minimal installation of X a few music files and emailed videos left him with less than 400 MB free space on the HD, causing multiple instances of "your startup disk is almost full" messages. Remember this computer shipped with a gargantuan 32 MB memory and a whopping 6 GB hard disk. It ran the latest incarnation of Apple's OS which was OS 8.5. No Firewire on this baby either, so expansion options are limited.
I reasoned I could remove its diminutive 6 GB HD and install the 30 GB HD I pulled from my iMac DV SE some time ago, giving the old iMac some room to breathe. But how to preserve the contents of the hard disk without having to reinstall his programs, files, etc?
    Here's how I did it:
Remember there's no Firewire on the Rev. D so there's no way to connect a bootable external hard disk to it. I do have an iPod which has both Firewire and USB cables though. So I connected my 6 GB iPod Mini to the Rev D iMac's USB port, checked "manually manage music" and "enable disk use". Deleted all music files.
Ran Carbon Copy Cloner and cloned the iMac's disk to the iPod (this took a couple of hours over USB). Set the Rev. D aside.
Opened the DV SE and removed its 120 GB HD. Information from this web site was most useful. Installed its original 30 GB. Booted it from my Panther disk and partitioned the HD to contain one 7.9 GB partition and the balance in another. Installed Panther on both partitions. Booted the DV SE to ensure the Panther installation went OK. No problems.
Just for kicks, I set the startup disk to the iPod over Firewire and booted the DV SE from it. Lo and behold it works! there was the old iMac Rev D's old self displayed on my DV SE. Who would think you could use an iPod as a boot disk? Everything worked like it did on Dad's old machine. Weird!
Selected the startup disk to the larger partition of the 30 GB internal HD and booted it. Ran Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the iPod to the smaller partition. This went a little faster since it's now over Firewire. Selected the startup disk back to the smaller partition of the 30 GB HD.
Removed the 30 GB HD and reinstalled the 120 GB in the DV SE. Made sure the the DV SE still works then set it aside.
Opened the iMac Rev. D and removed its pathetically diminutive 6 GB HD. Installed the 30 GB. Closed it up and it attempted to boot. It wouldn't work and got hung on a blue screen. Hmm.
I booted from a Panther disk. I went to reset the user password, but quickly determined there were no users installed on the boot partition. None. Obviously this would present a problem. Apparently it wasn't a good idea to install Panther on the larger partition using an identical user name and password - I think this confused Panther which deleted the account from the boot partition. If I had to do it over again, I would have set up a temporary account so I could boot from the larger partition and use CCC to restore the smaller partition. Anyway, no immediate solution came to mind, so I did an archive and install, preserving user settings and all that.
Oddly enough the only "user" was the system administrator. Fortunately, the system administrator had all the same user settings and files that my Dad had so I simply renamed the home folder, set the login name and password accordingly, and that was that.
For some reason Safari didn't work. Safari would launch, but no window displayed and clicking on the menus did nothing. I could only select "quit" from the Dock. I checked my permissions, trashed the prefs file, everything I could think of, but nothing helped. In desperation I downloaded and installed Safari from Apple's web site (using Firefox which was already installed and fortunately still worked). Amazingly, the same thing happened again. No menus would work. Finally, about to give up, I extracted an older version of Safari from the Panther install disks using Pacifist. That worked! I have no idea what caused this bizarre problem.
Now, back to the reason I started this to begin with. The boot partition is limited to 8 GB which is better than the 6 GB it used to be, but there is only a little more than 2 GB free now. There is another 20 GB on the remaining partition, but how to use it? As I understand it, you can use Netinfo Manager to map the user's "home" directory to another volume. I haven't tried that yet, but when the boot partition nears capacity, I'll give that a shot. I'm not looking forward to the permissions nightmare that may result.
So, success for now. The machine runs like new, sure it's a little slow but he's not running Photoshop or anything. That fan makes a racket – how spoiled we've become.
There was probably an easier way to do all this, but hey, it worked.
By the way my DV SE runs OS X 10.4.9 flawlessly with a new 120 GB HD and 384 MB memory. I have no plans to retire it any time soon.
    PB Ti 1 GHz  PB 17 1.33 GHz  iMac DV SE  iMac D  iPod mini    Mac OS X (10.4.9)    Legacy (Appletalk) networked printers  22 years Apple!

    Thank you Robert; that's helpful.
The way to map a user's entire Home folder to another volume is simple: In Netinfo Manager, select the desired user, then change his "home" property to the path where you want the new home folder to be. Theoretically this could be any volume anywhere. You can then completely delete the original home folder.
I tried this with a test account and it seems to work ok, I just had one problem with a haxie (cleardock). It won't load its system preference. Don't know if it's related to moving the home folder or not. In any event, I'd do lots of testing before making this change permanent.

  • Setup Mac Server

    Hello,
I have been ask to administer a Macintosh server, and while I do know Macs pretty well, I think I may be in over my head on this one.
The Server is a PowerMac G4 running Mac OS Server 10.2.8. I know it’s old but that’s what I have to work with. I think for what we need it should be enough.
I’ll try to explain the present Server setup (as it was when I began working here 3 years ago).
I work for a collection of medical research labs, each with a P.I. (primary investigator) and lab members. The way it was setup before I arrived is, each lab had an account, everyone in the lab would sign on to the Server using the same Laboratory account name & password. Each member could move files in and out at will. Everyone in the lab had access to everyone else’s files.
Now they want to give each person their own account. They want the P.I. to have access to all lab members data, but lab members to only have access to their own files. No more exchanging files between lab members.
The only thing I can come up with is to give each person an account, then make each lab member also a group, except the P.I., they would only have a personal account since no one else needs access to their data.
I then add the newly created lab member groups to the P.I.’s account so they can access their lab members data. This also isolates the lab members from each other.
I setup a share point for each account to their respective folder on the Server. In the share point the Owner and the group would be the same, this allows the P.I. to have access to the files (because I added each members Group to the P.I. account) as well as the actual owner.
I know this way will work because I tried it with the smallest Lab (P.I. + 4 members) we have.
But that was only 5 people. The 6 labs I need to setup would total around 80 accounts, plus a Group created for everyone minus the 6 P.I.’s. I would end up with over 70 groups!
Even now with only 6 accounts (one for each Lab)on the server I run into permission problem. About once a week I have someone calling me saying they are being denied access to a file someone else placed on the Server. I can go to the server and fix permissions easily using the Workgroup Manager. But, with 80 accounts I’m afraid this will become a permissions nightmare. Not to mention the Lab members come & go frequently, meaning I will be deleting and adding new account all the time.
Is there a better, easier or less complicated way to do this?
    Thank you
    Example:
*Johnson Lab: Primary Investigator -Dr. Eric Johnson*
    * Lab Members- Robert, Mike, Alice & Steven*
*1)Dr. Johnson needs access to his own files in his personal folder, as well as all folders and files within of each Johnson Lab member.*
*2)Lab members should have access to their own folder & files only.*
If you have read this far you’re a Saint.
    Thank you

    Hello Lucid7,
If I were you I would draw your needs in the simplest schema possible. I would use layers for distinguishing services from permissions from user and groups and so on. You demands aren't exotic or impossible but sound rather cluttered and are the cause of user request.
The schema might provide you some additional insights, gaps and additional requirements. Bottom line things you didn't think of.
Also you might want to invest some time in studying:
    + document management system (e.g. http://www.alfresco.com)
+ update to a more recent server version as ACL have more options and are becoming more mature each server iteration (if cost is an issue, look at eBay) (10.2?)
    + inherent grouping (10.2?)

  • Need help setting up XServe properly

I'm new to administrating our G4 XServe and am updating our server to 10.5 this weekend. I've got a few questions as I've previously installed 10.4 and had some problems with the way I did things. We're a small company with only about 12-15 people who mainly need one place to store and access the same files. We also run a FileMaker server, and I'm planning on using the Time Machine Server to backup the XServe and a few computers on the network to an attached Drobo.
Originally we had several different users set up on the XServe, which caused major issues with permissions of files and folders in a shared environment. User 1 creates folder and works on files in folder and when user 2 goes to work on those files, he can't save. In order to simplify, when I installed 10.4, I only made 2 users: Admin and User. Unfortunately many people have logged in and worked under both user names and again the permissions are a mess and unmanagable. What would be the best way for me to set this up to do the things I've outlined above without the permissions nightmare?
Do I create one user? Do I need multiple users to backup multiple machines to the Time Machine Server?
    Thanks,
    Michael

Hey, this should not really be a problem. You can create as many users as you like.
You should create group in WGM called staff or something like that
In the file sharing section, you should create a shared folder, then apply a ACL for your users group will whatever access you want.
Once that is done, copy all your old files into that share point then run propogate permissions, which will repair all the permissions going forward

  • IBook G3 10.3.9 to new MacBook 10.5.6

I am trying to migrate files and profiles from an iBook G3 (running 10.3) to a new MacBook (running 10.5, no Firewire 400 port).
Problems: the iBook doesn't have the correct Setup Assistant (the one that says it can do transfers), and I'm not even sure that would work with the new MacBook's Migration Assistant anyway.
Connecting via ethernet or wirelessly doesn't seem to work at all, since I don't have Migration Assistant on that older computer.
From what I'm seeing in Migration Assistant, connecting via Firewire and Target Disk mode, if I were to buy an 800 to 400, might not even work, since I haven't seen that option at all!
Does a solution exist, other than hand-moving every file through AFP? I imagine that to be somewhat of a permissions nightmare, since I'd love to keep all my bookmarks, keychains, preferences, etc just how they were on the old computer.

You cannot migrate between these two computers via FireWire if you have the unibody model because there is no FireWire port on it. Migration would need to be done via Ethernet or wireless if your iBook has a wireless card. You use the Migration Assistant on the MacBook, not the one on the iBook. See the following:

Note that migrating from a PPC to an Intel Mac can be problematical:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:
    MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)- Migration Tips and Tricks;
    MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)- What to do if migration is unsuccessful;
    MacBook Air- Migration Tips and Tricks;
MacBook Air- Remote Disc, Migration, or Remote Install Mac OS X and wireless 802.11n networks.
Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • Can't create VM with existing VHDX via Powershell. Nothing but errors because of Permissions BS/Nightmare

    -

Can you please provide more details?
Also, 'everyone' permissions on a share won't cut it. (and has not for a few years).  Everyone is not like setting '777' in Linux - it really isn't 'everyone'.
And, administration shares were never supported.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134187.aspx
Note the computer object permissions in Step 3.
Also, loopback shares won't work.  (as in the Hyper-V Server being its own SMB share).

  • Trying to reset home folder permissions and acls

I have been having a nightmare of a time with Adobe apps, primarily Premiere Pro, crashing CONSTANTLY and randomly. I have no idea what's causing it and have been going back & forth to no avail for days with Adobe, and trying a bunch of different things. I keep getting an error that says Thread 0 Crashed com.apple.main .......
I am on a 2014 Mac Pro 12 core, 64GB Ram with dual AMD D700 GPUs, running Yosemite.
The steps I have tried have included messing around with various permissions within the Adobe folders and enclosed files. That led me to then need to completely reinstall my OS from recovery mode. I tried multiple times going into recovery mode, doing resetpassword in Terminal, and then trying to reset the home folder permissions from there, but it just never says done and don't think it's doing anything. I have let it sit for hours and not gotten anything back on it.
I searched the forums and found an older thread where Linc Davis had posted a terminal code to put in, and tried that. Many said that worked for them, but it didn't seem to change anything for me. After doing that, i did go back into recovery mode and see if i could reset the permissions from there, but again, just greyed out the Done button and stayed for hours.
I am at a complete loss on what to do and really need some help. I am days overdue on projects because of Adobe's crashes and because of the time I've been wasting trying to re-sort out the IT stuff that I don't really know much about. Can you please help? ANYONE?

it's only been with adobe applications, but unfortunately, they are just not being helpful. I'll paste a crash report here below, maybe you can make sense of it. They can't seem to and I certainly can't. I really don't know what to do. All they keep doing is asking me more questions, which to me doesn't make a whole lot of sense in itself. I would think that an Adobe Crash Report should tell Adobe exactly what's causing the crash. So frustrating and right now highly detrimental to my business.
The only thing that is happening of question besides the Adobe apps crashing is that I can't reset my home folder permissions through the recovery mode. I tried last night and let it run overnight and this morning, it still had not said 'Done'. So i'm not sure if that denotes a different problem somewhere

  • 48-Hr. Film Project Nightmare

Well, it's been quite a weekend for this editor. I was a participant in the 48-Hour Film Project - and everything was going okay until about 4pm yesterday, three and 1/2 hours before we were to deliver our finished film. At that point things went terribly, horribly wrong. I was trying to export an HD sequence to an SD-format Quicktime. I had done this before in tests and I knew it could be done, and knew how I wanted to do it. But when it came time, that's when the trouble started.
Every time I would try to export, I would get the most useless message I think anyone could get - "General Error". What??? And this happened EVERY time, no matter what format settings I tried to export with, no matter what I did. I closed out, trashed prefs, rebooted, ran disk utility to repair permissions - all with no success. We had a good entry, and the pressure was starting to rise. We could not get this $%^&^%$& sequence out of the box. Period.
We never did manage to get a file. With 1//2 hour left we went into a dark bathroom with an SD camera and pointed it at our Apple Cinema screen, running audio from laptop to camera and shot the screen. Desperation and ingenuity at it's best/worst. Shooting the screen ended up working okay, although there were exposure issues that we didn't have time to deal with. We DID manage to get our entry in, 4 minutes before the deadline - although nobody was happy with the outcome and what had happened.
The worst part about all of this is that when I returned home after going through all of this and turning in our entry, I started to look into what happened and immediately was able to export with no issues. I just wanted to cry uncontrollably at that point, and laugh hysterically at the same time. There are not words to express. After poking around some more the error did show up again using one of the sequence timelines I had created, but not anything like getting that "General Error" literally almost 100 times in the course of those two - three hours yesterday when I was trying anything/everything I know to get it to export just ONCE. I had the settings, I knew the drill - I had even practiced doing this before this weekend with the camera we used and did tests - all that went out the window when the export issue started.
All I could think about was how I was glad this wasn't a "paying client" but in reality, all the people who donated their time to our project were the client. At least we delivered something, but it was only a sad facsimile for the great looking and sounding short film we created. Everything I had done to try to avoid this nightmare was to no avail, and all I can figure is that in the process of editing, one timeline got corrupted and managed to keep any timelines from exporting, or something was corrupted on my video drive that reset powered off and then back on when I packed up my gear and went home. I don't believe I cut/reset power to the drive when all of the problems were happening, so maybe that had something to do with it.
Anyway, thought you might be interested in hearing about this - makes you appreciate not being me yesterday.

Contrary to the information above, your workflow was far from "unnecessarily risky...". Back in 2007 when the HVX200 was all the rage I helped more than one team in the 48-Hr Film competitions that Panasonic sponsored, they used a nearly identical workflow to yours without a hitch. There are some not-so-obvious benefits to shooting in HD and then making a downconversion to SD that many even today just don't understand.
The "general error" bug has haunted many a FCP editor - myself included - and unfortunately Apple has never been forthcoming in exactly all the things that could cause this error code. In fact, I had an Apple Pro-Care Tech support tech tell me that the reason it's called a "general error" is because the application itself is unable to determine the source of the problem. It happens.
As you've probably learned from this exercise you should be prepared to do some heavy-duty troubleshooting when things go awry; you've covered a few things in your list of attempts to fix the problem and here's a short list of other things you can check in the future:
    - Connections to external drives, both in hardware (cables, power-supplies etc) and in software (making sure assets/preferences in FCP can still find those drives and are pointing to them).
    - Get a copy of DiskWarrior and make it part of your regular maintenance routine.
    - Speaking of maintenance, download Onyx (free app); use it's maintenance and cleaning routines regularly.
    - Don't forget the obvious; I did see in your original post that you did all the initial troubleshooting (reboot, trash prefs etc) but don't forget things like basic hardware needs: Check internal power-supplies, make sure RAM is fully connected, listen for drive noises (like heads banging themselves silly).
Don't take this error bug as an issue with your workflow; HD to down-converted SD is not only safe but a preferential method for making superior-looking SD content whether for broadcast or DVD.
