Permissions on Safari Plist

I am trying to accomplish something with the safari prefs to distribute to a mac lab. Please don't tell me to image the machine, I already am aware of that solution.
After experimentaion I have found out to set bookmarks and home pages to what I want for all the computers in the lab by copying the appropriate plist files. What I want to be able to do is set the permission so that the user using safari will NOT BE ABLE TO ADD a bookmark or change the home page. What is interesting is that I use ARD and log off the user so that when I copy the plist files over to the clients as the owner and others can only read which is what I thought would work, but it does not work. The file still gets written out to the Bookmarks.plist. I have tried everything I can think of to allow only read only. what I really want is either someone who has already acoomplished this and is willing to explain to me the steps they did or what also would be nice is an article about these particular plist files and their relationship to each other. I know com.apple.inetconfig.plist and com.apple.inetconfigpriv.plist have a relationship. So any help would be appreciated.
Com.apple.inetconfigpriv.plist
Com.apple.inetconfig.plist
Both of these files contain information about the home page. If you remove both of them the home page reverts back to apples home page without creating the com.apple.inetconfig.plist file, but it does create the com.apple.inetconfigpriv.plist file which drives the apple home page startup. If you modify this file to reflect the home page you want then it will startup with that page instead of apples. When the user chooses the home page under preferences this file is created with the home page information. The home page is apparently stored in two different places.
Bookmarks.plist: all bookmarks
This file contains all of the bookmarks, by changing this file and copying it to the Users {shortname direcgtory} the safari browser will come up with only the bookmarks in this file.
Com.apple.safari.plist
This file contains Boolean variables that determine if the IE or Netscape bookmarks should be imported and which tools are on the toolbar of the safari browser

Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Quit Safari.
Select
          Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the Finder menu bar. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
A folder window should open with a file named "Bookmarks.plist" selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the folder open.
Relaunch Safari. It will open with the default set of bookmarks. Delete them all. Select
          File ▹ Import from... (or Import Bookmarks...)
from the Safari menu bar. Import from the bookmarks file you moved to the Desktop. Arrange the bookmarks as you wish.
If Safari now performs normally, you can delete the old bookmarks file. Otherwise, quit Safari again and put back the file you moved, replacing the newer one with the same name. Close the Finder window and post your results.

  • How frequently to delete/reset Safari plist & repair permissions?

    Seems I am having to do this about once a week to keep Safari running. Feedback please.

    Safari has had intermittent issues with hanging and slowness loading a page since I've had the machine.
    It obviously shouldn't be like that. Try this:
    The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
    Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
    Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
    Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
    Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
    If not, MacFixit have published a very detailed (very!) article on speeding up a slow Safari, here:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070416000657464
    Many, including me, have also followed the advice given by others here to add DNS codes to their Network Settings, with good results in terms of speed-up:
    Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.220
    208.67.220.222
    Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
    Any improvement?

  • Safari 5.1 file permissions of com.apple.Safari.plist (Read only impossible???)

    Hi everyone,
    i try to set the user agent to a differnt string. To be sure that the changes in com.apple.Safari.plist are valid i copied the file after i set safari to the changes i want it to have. i did not write anything into the file by hand. Then i set the permission to the file to Read only for my user and copied the file back to ~/Library/Preferences.
    After starting safari it sets everything back to its defaults. Safari also changes the file permissions back to read&write for my user. How can i write protect this file?
    If thats not possible, does anyone have an idea how to set the user-agent of safari to another string as default value? btw. i also would like to know how to set private mode to on by default.
    I don't want to change my browser just because a simple configuration file's permission cannot be set permanently.
    Thanks for your help!

    after searching a long time i found a solution for the user-agent problem. Well it's not what i wanted in the first place, but at least this works. I can hide the user agent with the use of a small caching proxy server called "polipo".
    Polipo can be found here: http://www.pps.jussieu.fr/~jch/software/polipo/
    I'm not sure if there are precompiled binaries available. I compiled it from source using the gcc environment shipped with xcode by executing "./configure", "make" and "sudo make install".
    To run it at startup i used this plist file:
    ?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
        <key>Disabled</key>
        <false/>
            <key>Label</key>
            <string>fr.jussieu.pps.polipo</string>
            <key>ProgramArguments</key>
            <array>
                    <string>/usr/local/bin/polipo</string>
                    <string>-c</string>
                    <string>/etc/polipo.conf</string>
            </array>
            <key>RunAtLoad</key>
            <true/>
        <key>OnDemand</key>
        <false/>
        <key>UserName</key>
        <string>root</string>
        <key>GroupName</key>
        <string>daemon</string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    i saved it under the name fr.jussieu.pps.polipo.plist in /Library/LaunchDaemons/.
    then i modified the example configuration file from the source package and saved it to /etc/polipo.conf. This is the essential modification to hide the user agent:
    censoredHeaders = user-agent
    There are more options available to censor the Headers and to increase privacy (set-cookie2, cookie2, from, x-pad, link, accept_language).
    after that i started the daemon:
    sudo launchctl load /Library/LaunchDaemons/fr.jussieu.pps.polipo.plist
    at last i configured my proxy settings of osx to my new local proxy for http:
    host: 127.0.0.1
    port: 8118
    that should do it ... i hope this is usefull for someone else ...
    please note: hiding the user-agent or blocking cookies may cause websites not to act normal.

  • No safari plist?

    I've been having some problems with my safari autofill (it never remembers passwords or tells me that I entered something different). I read on the forum that I should delete the plist for safari. I went to library/preferences and there was no safari anything. There is also no safari folder in the library pane or the system pane. Where else would it be? What else can I do to fix my autofill problem?

    Hello,
    In order for Safari to remember passwords do this. With Safari open, go to the Menu, click Safari/Preferences. When the Preferences window opens, click the AutoFill tab and check the appropriate boxes. Also, with Safari open, from the Menu top of your screen click Safari/Empty Cache. And with Safari open, in the Menu click Window/Downloads. When the Downloads window opens, click the Clear button and close the window.
    As for your com.apple.safari.plist file. It has to be there. Try doing a Spotlight search. Go to your Menu top of your screen and click round icon (all the way to the right) that has a magnifying glass icon in it. In the Search field type: com.apple.safari.plist A list will populate. At the top of the list click where it says: Show All That file will be in that list. Click the little white circle with an "i" in it...it will give you the path to the file.
    Path: double click your MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. In the Sidebar on the left click your Home Folder, that is your Users folder. Now on the right click the Library folder, then click the Preferences folder. I guarantee you that file is there and I'll tell you why. Without these files your Mac would just crash on boot. It needs these files to function. You wouldn't be able to use your Applications.
    Also, go to your Applications folder, then open the Utilities folder and look for, "Disk Utility". Double click Disk Utility. When the window opens, select MacintoshHD 10.5 in the panel on the left, select the First Aid tab, then click where it says: Repair Disk Permissions. Allow that to run. It can fix a lot of little bugs. When it's finished, Quit Disk Utility from the Menu, in other words, go to the top of your screen and click Disk Utility/Quit Disk Utility. Do this once a week.
    Now, go here and download Onyx for Leopard: http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/download.html It's a great disk utility that is free that you can download and use once a week. It will clean out cache files, log files and keep your Safari browser running in a stable environment. It's the second download on the page. Just follow the install instructions. Launch Onyx and use the Maintenance and Cleaning scripts once a week.

    When I open Safari, it just hangs up. I cant get to the menu to reset and i cannot find the apple.safari.plist folder in the preferences folder. Anyone have any suggestion?

    Alright, I figured it out. I found the Preferences.plist in the ~/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration folder. I deleted it and restarted my macbook. Now Safari works!

  • Com.apple.safari.plist missing in preferences folder

    Hey everybody,
    my safari has become unusably slow. I checked for solutions and found out I should delete the com.apple.safari.plist. So I browsed my preferences folder in the library for the file and could not find it. I checked my whole Library for any Safari related file and there was none.
    Has anyone an explanation for this? I already reinstalled the OS which didn't change a thing.
    I hope anybody can help me please
    I am using a mid 2012 rmbp with 8gb ram, which has become a little laggy in general since the yosemite in update

    Unfortunately, deleting the com.apple.safari.plist didn't solve my original problem. Safari is still so superslow sometimes. And then its fast again. But Chrome is always faster and immediately responding. I've run a test with Etresoft:

  • Safari plist

    Safari cannot connect with website "..." because it cannot establish a secure connection. This is happening on almost daily basis. The only work around is to trash the Safari plist file in preferences, empty cache and restart. This seems to happen only when I'm logging onto a site with passwords. Can anyone tell me what is corrupting my plist file?

    HI,
    Try the Safari/Keychain fix:
    1) Quit Safari
    2) Open Keychain Access. (Applications/Utilities) Find the "Safari AutoFill" item. Delete it.
    3) Relaunch Safari. Next time it asks for authorization, click "Always Allow".

  • Safari plist missing

    i havent been able to change my browsers font, so looking for a solution online i noticed that my safari plist is missing. What can i do to solve this issue? its driving me nuts and i have no clue of what else to do. Please help. THANX

    There are two libraries.  One is root  /Library    The other is User  ~/Library
    Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar top of your screen click Go > Go to Folder
    Type or copy/paste:    ~/Library/Preferences
    Click Go
    You'll find the com.apple.Safari.plist file in the Preferences folder.
    Access User  ~/Library  folder in Lion and Mountain Lion
    Trying to change the Safari font can cause such issues as Safari freezing and crashing.

  • Blank entries in Safari plist files

    I came across a weird problem today when I was using the Property List Editor to look at some Safari plist files - in ~/Library/Safari/LastSession.plist
    The problem is that the value for some web sites is shown as blank, but yet there is a valid Safari window with a valid URL for where this entry should be. It does not happen very often but seems to be repeatable for certain websites. For example one of the problem URL's is
    http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=9191
    and then look at the LastSession.plist file with the Property List Editor, the entry for this tab is blank, but yet gets restored OK the next time I start Safari.
    So the question is how in the world do I see a blank value for the URL string but Safari gets the right info and opens the URL OK the next time it starts up?? This happens to more than this single web site (there are probably 4 or 5 out of 30 that seem to have this problem). The problem does not happen on another different Mac (both on Leopard) for this same web site, so it isn't consistent and in fact if I bring up the same web site in another window it might look OK in Property List Editor - very random. I've looked at the plist file with two different plist editors and both show the same blank value for where the URL should be.
    Any ideas as to what is going on?
    Thanks...
    -Bob

    The names are different in the two .plist files:
    * Icon already includes gloss effect [YES | NO]
    * Required device capabilities [Array of capabilities]
    and
    * UIPrerendededIcon [YES | NO]
    * UIRequiredDeviceCapabilities [Array of capabilities]
    But then, at the end, things are working....

  • N manually moving Safari data over to new computer, must I move the Safari plist?

    Old computer is too old to use Migration Assistant, and since I'm moving hardly any of the old applications from 10.4 I'm getting ready to move all my data manually via Firewire.  Should I take or leave the old plist?

    You only need .plist files for applications you will transfer over to the new computer.
    A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
    The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
    If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
    Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
      1. Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
      2. Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
      3. All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
      4. Contextual Menu Items
      5. Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
      6. Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
    See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
    In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
    If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
    If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
    The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
    Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
    Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

      6. Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
      7. OS X Lion: How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
    Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
    If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
      1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
      2. Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake
          or there's some other problem.
      3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
      4. Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
      5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and
           registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your
           desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
    If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

    Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
    In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
    /Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
    Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
    Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
    Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
    If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the  Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

    However, I can't see your reply in the Full Discussion, just in the email notification. The link brings up only my first post.
    I conclude from your reply that I should leave things as they are, right?

    Speak slowly. Like my car, I just drive this thing. I don't know what's under the hood (since about 1975). I see a lot of other folks are having problems like this. I don't keep a journal, but I think this started when I downloaded the last update.
    I've been using Safari without a hitch for about four years, and suddenly, six weeks ago or so, it started freezing up while browsing (blue bar stops after "http", spinning beachball of death appears) and I have to force quit to get out. There are two user accounts on my computer, and the other one doesn't seem to be having a problem (it's rarely used). I can browse for a minute or two, four or five sites, and then the problem occurs. I'm using Firefox as a backup, and not having problems with it. I haven't updated Firefox lately, and don't intend to as long as it works.
    I've tried repairing disk permissions, deleting Safari plist, clearing my cache, history, and cookies, and reset Safari. Nothing changed, and I'm a little reluctant to start trying all the suggestions I see on various strings.
    I've sent dozens of crash reports to Apple. I assume others have too. Must be a pretty tough problem if Apple hasn't issued an update to fix it by now. Can anybody with more savvy help?
    I tried including the latest crash report in this post and got this report:
    500 Unable to insert thread into the database: Data truncation: Data too long for column 'body' at row 1
    Resin Professional 3.0.23 (built Mon, 22 Jan 2007 02:25:17 PST)

    Klaus 1's suggestion doesn't work for me. When I select System Preferences > Network, I get a window titled Network, with two dialog boxes: DNS Server in which it says "10.0.0.1" and Search Domains, which is blank. When I double click on my connection type, nothing happens. I don't get the dialog boxes Klaus 1 describes.
    Here's some more crash report. I still get the "too big" report when I try to send it all. "500 Unable to insert message into the database: Data truncation: Data too long for column 'body' at row 1"

  • Can't open some web pages... DOES ANYONE HAVE A FIX THAT WORKS?

    I'm unable to open certain web pages. The pages will start to open and than the application will just stall. This seems to have coincided with downloading a security update a while back. I've tried downloading firefox and it too will not open these specific pages. I've searched the forum and as of now I can't find a solution. From what I've hear, Apple isn't even acknowledging that there is an issue. I've repaired permissions, deleted Safari plist files, all with no improvement. I know for a fact that it is not my internet connection, as my powerbook can navigate to these sites without any issues, however my powermac seems to have "forgotten" how to open some web pages.
    Any fixes would be enourmously appreciated!

    Thanks for the reply.
    I don't think that reporting the pages to apple would do much good as it's not the pages themselves that are the issue, it's something on my system that prevents them from opening up properly. My laptop will open the pages without any issue, however my desktop isn't able to for god knows what reason. I know others on this board have had similar problems.

  • Safari bookmarks plist file

    If you delete the home folder-Lebrary-Safari-bookmarks plist file, does that erase your bookmarks?? Or just reset the memorization of?
    I know if you erase your dock plist, it erases all but the factory icons. I couldn't remember if it was the same here.
    Thanks,

    powerbook1701,
    Deleting the com.apple.Safari.plist will not change your Safari Bookmarks. They are located at /Users/yourusername/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist.
    You do not have to take my word for this, just read How to back up and restore your important Mac OS X 10.4 files.

  • What files to modify for the settings of Safari Prefs using plist editor ?

    I'm running into a situation that the default "Save downloaded files to"
    for some unknown reason has been changed to the hard disk top level of Desktop which caused all users can't download (permission error). I knew this can
    be fixed by the logged user by going to Safari's General Preference and change
    to the desired location. However, I need to use the "Property List Editor"
    to modify the preferences file(s) for all users ! as I have a customized
    /System/Library/User\ Template/English.lproj which contains a Safari folder
    under /System/Library/user\ template/English.lproj/Library. There is file called "Downloads.plist" under the Safari folder, I examined this file using
    "Property List Editor", it contains the following two lines:
    <key>DownloadEntryPath</key>
    <string>~/Desktop/fdmacosx.sit</string>
    I am not sure if the above two entries are for the "Save downloaded files to"
    setting in Safari GUI Preferences setting. If they are, then they should point
    to the logged user's home directory's Desktop (Not points to the drive top level)which should be correct. BUT all subsequent created users STILL point to the drive top level Desktop (with Red stop sign in the icon)in Safari's Preferences.
    I also looked in the /System/Library/user\ template/English.lproj/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist, nothing related to the "Save downloaded files to".
    Where to look for the Preferences file(s) for this setting ?
    DC

    Found nothing related to the "Save downloaded files to" preferences setting
    in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. what is the entry in
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist ? Should not be in the logged user
    Preferences file, I'm looking for system wide plist file.
    -DC
