Permissions problem with a disk

My iMac's HD has 2 partitions, Macintosh HD and another one called Backups HD.
If I copy files to the root of Backups HD it's fine, but if I try to add any files to any of the folders on the disk it asks me to authenticate and I have to enter my username and password every time.
I've done 'Get Info' on the disk and all the top level folders on the disk, and all the permissions are the same:
Jono (me): Read & Write
staff: Read & Write
everyone: Read only
Any ideas why I need to authenticate every time I add files?

JonoH wrote:
Thanks a lot, that worked!
I didn't realise you couldn't simply copy files over from the Time Machine backup, I'll make sure I don't do that in the future.
So after erasing OS X and reinstalling I should set the disk back up again in Time Machine and then restore files from within the TM UI. Is that correct?
not quite sure what you mean by this. why are you doing an erase and install? but yes, restoring files from TM should be ONLY done from TM interface.
Thanks a lit for the help again

  • Permissions problem with internal disk

Thank you in advance for this, you will be saving me 3 years of student design projects.
I own a Mac Pro and installed an extra 350 gig WD internal HD. It has worked great for a few months but recently I think I messed it up by clicking "ignore ownership on this volume". When I booted up my computer again it was gone! I was worried sick that the drive had gone bad but when running disk utility it shows up just fine and needed no repairs or anything else, but nowhere can I find a way to make it accessible to me again.
Everything from my first three years of being a design student is on that drive. It would mean the world if I can find a way to restore it! Please help me out!
    Nick

    Right… do this…
    1) Open NetInfo Manager (Utilities folder) and select "Enable Root User" from the Security menu
    2) Authenticate when asked and supply a password when asked being EXTREMELY careful to use a password you'll remember as this, unlike other passwords, is not recoverable or resettable
    3) Log out and you should now find an "Other…" option in the list of users
    4) Select other and log in as root with the password you set in NetInfo Manager
    5) Once logged in you should find the drive mounted

  • Problem With Target Disk Mode

Folowing upgrade of my Mini and Powerbook to Tiger I have a problem with target Disk Mode when I attempt to eject the transfer to disk following transfer of my user file. I get an error message to the effect that files are in use and the disk can not be ejected. I try force quit (finder only is running) usually to no effect. Sometimes attempting to verify disk permissions in disk utility will clear the problem and allow me to eject the disk. One time it took close to an hour attempting to eject the disk. Is there another way?
    PB   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I had this problem with external volumes like ZIP discs and also external hard drives. Sometimes it was an app used on one of the external files still being open (eg. Word for a text file) which had to be quitted first. The "trackpad" button equals the mouse button which is on the PowerBook. Repairing the target disk via disk utility might also help.

    Hi,
If this message is coming up in a black screen.
Then the harddrive in the system is about to go bad or already bad.
If you are able to boot to windows, FIRST BACKUP DATA.
Also run a startup test by tapping F2 as soon as you power on the system.
The smart test is a BIOS feature in most of the computer which is designed to keep cust informed if the HDD is about to go bad. But their are instances where the SMART will only let you know that the HDD is bad only when the HDD has bad.

  • Permissions problem with external HD

Prior to updating to 10.4.3, I was able to write to any external HD to transfer large files betweek my iBook and a windows PC. After upgrading, I am no long able to use 3 out of the 4 external HDs that I used to be able to. I always get an error message stating a problem with permissions. I get info on the drive and it says read only and will not allow me to change to read and write. I plug the same drive into my Windows PC and change the permissions to read and write, and get the same message when I go back to my iBook, I get the same read only problem.
    Any ideas?

    Eric,
I, too, apologize for the delay in posting. I have been away from the discussions for a rather extended period.
Well, any NTFS formatted volume will only be accessible to you as read only. No, this is not something new, but has always been the case. To make matters worse, I have heard that Windows no longer provides any way to create a FAT-32 volume; one must use OS X to format the volume or use a third-party application in Windows. This information may be incorrect, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is true (we're talking about Microsoft, here).
If you can copy any data on this drive to some other location, then use Disk Utility to format it as FAT-32, the data can then be copied back and it can be used to transport the data cross-platform, with read/write access on both ends. Is this a possibility for you?

  • Problem with mounting disk images

I have recently downloaded a media player and have had some problems. When I download the file to my desktop and try to run it, it gives me a "warning" window. In the window, it says that "the following disk images failed to mount" and gives "device not configured" as the reason. The file on the desktop's path is .dmg just to be more clear. So...yeah...any advice??
    Jay

Just to make sure (I don't think this is your problem, but it's easy to check), make sure /System/ Library/ CoreServices/ DiskImageMounter.app is present on your Mac.
Do you have another user account on your Mac? If necessary, use System Preferences> Accounts to create a new troubleshooting-only administrative user account. Check if that new user account can open .dmg files. If it does, that indicates a problem with the preferences in your normal user account. Use Preferential Treatment to scan your prefs. You can also drag the ~/Users/ [yourusername]/ Library/ Preferences folder tot he desktop, log out and back in, and see if .dmg images work, then move your prefes back from teh Preferences folder on the Desktop to the one in ~/Users/ [yourusername]/ Library. Or you might just try moving these prefs to the Desktop:
    /Users / [yourusername]/ Library/ Preferences/ com.apple.frameworks.diskimages.uiagent.plist
    and com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
If the troubleshooting user account also shows the problem, first run Disk Utility/ Repair Permissions. If that doesn't fix the problem, try running the OS X Update Combo 10.4.7 (Intel) (using Disk Utility to expand that .dmg file after downloading).

  • Permissions problems with Shared files

In my office of two users I have set up file sharing between two Macs, one is is running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and the other (a PPC machine) is running 10.5.8 (The Leopard Machine was migrated over from a Tiger Machine by doing a fresh install of Leopard and then using Migration Assistant to move the user account off of the Tiger Machine).
Occasionally, I need to send files to the Leopard Mac from my Snow Leopard machine, so I connect to the other Mac's Shared folder, navigate to the Drop Box, and pop the file in.
Looking at the file on the other machine, it comes through as Read Only, ie. if I Get Info on it, it says 'you have custom access' and lists users as Nobody: Read Only; (Unknown): Read Only and Everybody: Read Only. These permission remain like this once the file is copied or moved out of the Drop Box.
I've had a look at the Sharing Prefs on both machines and they are set up to have the admin account as Read and Write and Everyone as Read Only - the Drop box is then set to have the admin account as Read and write and Everyone as Write Only (Drop Box).
The permissions problems happen in either direction, whether copying from machine A to machine B or vice versa.
Can someone help me fix this.
    Thanks

    Easybourne wrote:
Thanks for the tip. Once the other user vacated their Mac last night I ran the commands but...
Unfortunately, I still seem to be having issues with files being 'read only' on the Leopard machine. If I send a file from the Snow Leopard Mac to the Leopard Mac's drop box, it shows up with what looks like read/write access for 'nobody', 'everyone' and 'unknown user', but if I open the file, work on it and try to save via an app's save dialog, it says the file is Read-only. In the words of t'internet: W T F?
I ran your commands on the Snow Leopard machine too, and curiously, if I send a file from the Leopard machine to the Snow's Drop box, I CAN read and write to the file.
One thing that troubles me is that My User name is now listed TWICE in the list of permissions I get (My User Name): Custom Access and (My User Name) Read/Write. That seems odd.
no, that's normal. this happens because of the ACLs.
Something similar is happening on the Leopard machine too.
I created a fresh user account on my Snow Leopard Machine to see what the default permissions should be and I get other entries in the permissions list that aren't present on either of the two Machine's main user accounts. Users such as 'Staff', for example. Frankly, I'm lost.
I've read somewhere that there could be permissions problems on machines where user accounts have been upgraded from Tiger to Leopard as is the case with one of the machines in question.
yes, that could be. we can fix that if necessary.
I've also read that I can do a complete reset of ACLs by using the Reset Password utility on the Leopard installer DVD. Would this be worth a go, and could it cause more problems if it doesn't work?
yes, you can try resettings ACLs on the leopard machine using the leopard install disk. however, the acl reset utility on the leopard disk is somewhat buggy and sets wrong groups on everything it touches. therefore after you are done with it, reboot normally and run the following terminal command
    sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
you'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal.
If you can bear it, could you please help me some more. Thanks very much.

  • Permissions problems with multiple discs in Mac Pro

    Hi.
I have three discs in my Mac Pro. One is the boot drive, which is an SSD, another is a 2TB Seagate and the other is a smaller spare for setting stuff aside. The SSD and 2TB drives are NOT a fusion drive. They work okay but there are problems with permissions and I am trying to figure out what the permissions on each need to be for them to work in close harmony. The user account is on the boot drive but music and photo libraries, for example, are referenced on the big drive.
Permissions on the boot drive show: system - r&w, wheel - ro, everyone - ro...
On the big drive they are: Drieu(Me) - r&w, staff - r&w and everyone - ro. Ignore ownerships is not ticked and I am undecided about this.
None of these seems to be correct. I know how much chaos can ensue if changes are made rashly, so I am loth to experiment but things are wrong enough to need to do something. Does anyone have any suggestions, given I am not sharing the machine with anyone, other than the default public folder.
The spare drive has Drieu (Me) - r&w, system - ro, admin - r&w and everyone - ro!

The Samsung 840 pro SSD boot disc
10.9.5 and later turn ON kext signing, which turns OFF TRIM Enabler. A non-Apple SSD without TRIM cannot eliminate deleted files, so it will eventually become choked with an accumulation of deleted data. Doing the Install under these conditions could add 20GB or more of deleted data, and it could become super-slow.
The 2TB disk [that was the Boot Disk]
that permissions over the whole disc vary. Some files require that I enter the password to move them.
Permissions for different folders vary widely. For example, System Directories are write-locked to you, and moving files from them would require that you authenticate as Admin.
Files transferred from the desktop to this disc require to have the command key applied to move, rather than copy.
The default in a Drive-to-Drive transfer IS Copy. To change that to Move, you must hold the Command or Option key. This is a Documented Feature, and is working as designed. Default for Folder-to-Folder On the same Drive is Move.
I also find that when modifying blocks of files they can suddenly disappear and I have to come out and run round the block before I can go back in to finish the job. It works okay but it is unnerving, despite having a backup.
One or both of those drives may be having problems. What you describe does not sound normal.

  • Permissions problems with sound track pro and garage band

I am having a problem with the loops and sounds in Garageband and SoundTrack Pro. When I attempt to use a sound in garage band,  I get an error "an eror occurred   result code = -5000   File = Garageband-Temp-54E281E". When I do a search there are about 58 separate folders with loops or effects in them. If I isolate the one I want to use and change the permissions of the folder to everyone read and write I can use the sound, but I don't want to manually change the permissions for 58 seperate folders. I ran repair permissions using disk utility but that did not fix it. Any suggestions, I have a lab of 22 imacs, if it was just one I would just fix the permissions on it but for 22 separate machines, I would like some automation. Thanks in advance for your help.

I'll also add that I'm pretty sure I used this microphone along with the iMic USB a few years ago when I had my 'quicksilver' Mac G4 and it worked with that machine. As noted above, I've tried it with both a 2 channel and both the mono channel settings in Garage Band; but I am using a 1/4" to 1/8" jack adapter in order to plug into the iMic's 1/8" receptacle. The adapter is stereo to stereo, meaning it has both contacts for r & l. That shouldn't make a difference should it? In my experience if you are using mono equipment (like a single microphone) the sound will still be delivered through one of the two channels.

  • ITouch Get Stuck and after restore problem with hard disk

some days before the stuck my iTouch begin to give me an error when i connect it to iTunes: the sync starting and when was time of backup it said that isn't possible to backup my iPod because it was disconnected (what?!?! it's plugged in and he see it a few second ago!!)
Then the iTouch stop to run

i've tried to plug in but iTunes never see it
So i try to put the iPod in DFU Mode...after a few attemps iTunes reveal it
First i try with 3.1.2 (2 times) but it give me some error such as "memory unavailable"
Then i have downloaded 3.1.3 and all goes well apart a little error on sync iTunes
today i have put into 1400 contacts with itunes in sync with my company and now iTunes give me this error - I can't sync because memory disk was full
    if i go on my iPod -> Setting ->General -> Info -> Space Available -> 0 byte
what file are included in this voice??
    how i can fix it??
there was some problem with my hardware?
    thanks a lot

    Welcome to the discussions,
if you connect your ipod to itunes and look at the colored info bar at the bottom of the window, does it show different colors or just one orange "other" part? As you got errors while syncing, there might be corrupt data files on your ipod filling it up. Try to restore again to get rid of the great orange part. After that the "other" section should be reduced to max. of 500MB or less.

  • Problems with hard disk, but it won't repair

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro has gradually become slow, and it crashes occasionally, especially when multitasking. I verified my hard disk with the Disk Utility, and it told me the following:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
Incorrect block count for file Temp File
(It should be 917 instead of 0)
    Incorrect number of thread records
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    Checking volume information.
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
However, in a pop-up it then says the following:
    First Aid failed
Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit.
Any idea what could be wrong and how I could fix it? I find it a bit disconcerting that my Mac crashes. It's not supposed to do that!

In order to repair a startup volume you must boot from another disk. Try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Problem With Low Disk Space - Message - Email and ...

    Hi all,
I have a N97 and i noticed that when i have around 200 stored messages in my sent and my received in box then i get the e-mail disconnecting and saying to me that it's been disconnected due to low disk space.
So i tried changing the location of the folders for the e-mails and then i got a warning about the folders not being correct and had to restore them to the original settings.
I'm sure this is also related but some one tried to send me a small video via blue tooth and it told me that the memory was full but for the life of me i can't seem to change where a blue tooth message would go too.
Thanks in advance for any tips.
i know i may have 2 separate issues here but it's all the same low disk space or out of disk space etc etc
it would seem that it's a problem so how can i go about fixng it, it's poor...
The first offering is Nokia's new 'Messaging' client. If you really, really have been looking forward to this then by all means install it, but beware that it will, between application and messagebase, use up a lot of disk C: on its own. And you can't switch the messagebase to 'mass memory', because that gets locked out when you connect your N97 up to your PC or Mac, switching Nokia Messaging back to C:. As a long time Gmail user, I still find it easier to use either the 'old' S60 Messaging application (in IMAP4 mode) or just use the standalone Gmail (Java-based) application, which has the benefit of speed and of an utterly minimal footprint in daily use.
Also offered via 'Sw update' is Ovi Maps 3.1, which also insists on ensconcing itself on C:. If version 2.0 is working well for you then there really isn't a compelling reason to update, to be honest. Or at least not one that's compelling enough to warrant signing over at least 7MB of C: to it. If version 2 isn't working for you, you still shouldn't install v3.1, as offered, but go for the very latest v3.3, from the Nokia Beta Labs Maps page. It's faster and slicker and at least you'll be getting extra functionality for your lost Megabytes, including less troublesome GPS performance. See below for more on the GPS.
Next is Ovi Contacts, a beta-quality social integration system that's yet to take off in any meaningful way. Again, just avoided unless you really, really want to get involved. You don't need to lose the vital Megabytes.
Then there's the N-Gage games client, another C: biggie, seemingly swallowing up 6MB or so in a real world installation - if, like me, you're rather underwhelmed by N-Gage titles (in fact, underwhelmed by gaming on Symbian in general, but that's another rant for another day), then just say no and, again, give your internal disk a break.
The final optional 'Sw update' was Quickoffice 6, bringing compatibility with Office 2007 documents. This also takes up the best part of 10MB on C:, so unless you get a lot of Docx or Xlsx files by email then I'd strongly suggest holding fire on this update - you'll probably get it anyway in the v20 firmware in a few months time.

Hi, don't know wether you've done this, but go into messaging/options/settings/other/memory in use/set as E:mass memory. If this causes a problem with email, simply delete mailbox and re-install it, it only takes a couple of minutes. One other thing , if you want to save any txt messages, sync with ovi first. Also to get C memory back delete all messages sent , recieved, reports etc before selecting Memory in use as E. Also go to web browser and clear privacy data regularly. One other thing to note is that usually when connected to computer via usb, messaging memory will revert to C, and you won't be able to see any messages , so reset to E again and they are all there. Best taskmanager from Ovi store is also a real help with memory on phone.
Hope this helps, and my appologies for the somewhat eratic layout nof the advice. Should have mentioned clearing messages from C before using E !
    Good Luck

  • Problem with SSD disk in MacBook Pro

I have a very weird problem with my SSD drive 128 GB in a MacBook Pro (early 2011). The warranty has already expired, I don't have Apple Care.
I had Mac OS Lion installed, and once when I opened the lid as usual to wake the system up, the system appeared to be frozen. I had to shut it down, and when swithched on again, the system didn't load - it was showing the apple and loading circle all the time.
I've tried a lot of things:
    1) First I checked the disk loading from the CDs that came with the laptop. Disk verification didn't run for the first time (image), for the second time it showed an error (image)
    2) I went to Apple store, where they made a quick hardware check, which showed everything was OK, supposed that it was a software problem a offered me to reinstall the OS. And failed to do that.
    3) I took out the hard drive and connected it via USB adapter. I could see and read the contents of the disk.
    4) I COULD LOAD the OS and work from the disk, connected by USB
    4) I tried to reinstall the OS myself (with the disk connected by SATA), and it was always freezing when searching for available disks.
    5) I installed the OS on this drive, connected by USB - all went smoothly, it installed and was working, while when connected through SATA it didn't load.
    6) Finally, I swapped my SSD with freshly installed OS with a usual HDD from another mac. BOTH WORK: my SSD in another Mac, and HDD in mine.
So, I've come to a conclusion that the problem is not in the disk itself, and not in my laptop's SATA interface, but in communication with SSD through SATA, probably some controller on the mainboard.
Question: Can anybody suggest anything on how I can confirm or disprove that? Or any thoughts about whether it can be fixable or not?
    Thanks.

Exactly the same happened to me. Yesterday morning I opened the lid of my MBP8,1 (late 2011) on a meeting with a client and It just did not wake up :-/ After forced reboot it would never boot stuck on the same place.
Now what is happening any HDD will be recognized and booted aswell 10/10 attempts but SSD will not boot eventhough I reinstalled it all. The SSD WILL boot in other MBP and is visible on other systems.
The SSD WILL BOOT via USB.
I do not believe the disk is the problem.
My MB was replaced just few months ago. My SATA cable was replaced some time before the MB.

  • [PX6-300D] Access permissions problem with shares

    Hello,
    Let me explain the problems.
When i try to connect one share to PC by mapping network device everything is normal - we have access to the storage and so on, but when i try to simply type the \\address\share in explorer i'm receiving "\\address\share is not accessible" popup window.
Strange here is that i can access the \\storageDevice but i can't access the \\storagedevice\Sharename
With lot of clicking and editing accounts in px6 i didn't received results, but i tried to increase the security for local network encryption to Always and voila i received access to the share and 15 minutes later i loss it again. (worked one time only)
My big problem is that i use Acronis backup solution and the software can't find the share where the backups are.
In last 10 days i have 5 successfull backups and 5 failed due to access problems with the device.
    Can any one help?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello Stimar
Is the unit connected to a domain controller?  Are you having issues accessing the shares using a domain user or a local user, both?
If connected to a domain, have you set a preferred server ?  If not, the unit will use the DNS under the Network page to try resolve the AD server.  You will want to make sure you have the correct preferred server or DNS or you may run into permission issues.
Double check that the user(s) have at least read access permissions from the web interface, if you have the file level encryption option enabled, you may need to adjust permissions from your domain controller as well.
If you are on a different sub-net than the px6 that can cause share access issues.
