PetStore: correct design?
Just recently I reviewed Pet Store 1.3.1 application by Sun Microsystem, and I found that Sun model the catalog, item, category, and product using combination of Stateless SB, DAO, and simple java bean..
I was quite surprised.. Then I found their reason in their documentation :
The catalog is a stateless session bean.
If the catalog were implemented as a Web-tier component like a servlet, it would be
limited to Web-only clients. If the catalog were written as a conventional class, it might
have to manage connection pooling and concurrent access to achieve adequate
performance and scalability. Choosing a stateless session bean provides catalog
access to any type of enterprise beans client, while meeting the resource sharing
and scalability goals of the component. The component is stateless because it
requires the highest possible performance and scalability.
Catalog entries are modelled as conventional classes.
In this application, catalog entries provide an excellent example of when not to use
enterprise beans. Catalog entries are simple, tabular data with little or no behavior.
They do not need the services enterprise beans provide. For example, because they
are read-only, they don?t require concurrent update management or transactions.
Modelling catalog entries as entity beans would create unnecessary overhead.
Modelling them as conventional classes meets all of their requirements
in the simplest, most efficient way.
Well, true that it is simple to use DAO, but this design is not very scallable. Imagine that pet store host thousands category with 10,000 items, and imagine if each items has its own availability (eg: the number of parrots to sell are only 8), etc.
I personally will model the entities (catalog, product, items, category) with Local Entity Bean for caching benefit.
My opinion, this design assumes that Database (through DAO) must be robust in order the application to be scallable. We know how limited is DAO without application caching mechanism (such as Entity Bean) when application get hundred hits per seconds.
I know that some database cache the sql queries and its result implicitly so same query won't be processed again and again. We can also use PrepareStatement in DAO class to optimize the query further. But I still think that this design is too much on delegating the overhead to database. They should use EB instead of Stateless SB.
What do you think guys?
Dukes will be awarded to person(s) who able to say that the design is correct / unproper, by giving valuable input / design consideration (aside of my statement above)

How to correct design view?
I got a strange problem in Design View: I set up Foundation 3. Works fine, shows exactly as it should be in a browser preview. But it shows horrible in design. Normally I work in the split view. Code on top, design below. Right now I might as well work with Notepad only.
It is possible it's a border problem, I had that in the past. Removing the border on a div solved the issue. But I can't do that here, because that is the very basis on which Foundation 3 works.
How do I correct this?Perhaps CS7 will be on a par with modern browsers. CS6 is still about as
good as a 5 year old browser - sometimes. If you are using fairly
complex CSS, I would simply turn off CSS rendering in Design View so you
can edit content and rely on Live View (fairly good in CS6) or a real
browser preview to check your page.

Can I do correction Design of a file which was made by Dw CS6(html file) on Muse?
I am still Adobe Muse biginner.
Can re-design the html.file (Creative cloud's providing Dreamweaver CS6 made, exported file) on Adobe Muse?
How to import it into Muse the file?
I tried these 3 cases experimentally:
1) FILE - Open site - gray and non active
2) Insert HTML - unclear
3) Copy and paste from opened the html data from word - uniform regulations of the html file of Dreamwever will be changed and changed on Muse's new document
The html file which I want to re-design, it is constructed by quiet simple composition by txt and JPG images, just one site(page), I expect that the material makes be operate like a iWeb (Apple) or Dreamweaver.
I don't want to destroy glossy design made by Dw, keep almost design, just I would like to insert image, and want to export html file again.
Is it possible? If it were possible to do it, how do I devise it? Do you know if the procedure was written on Adobe's pages on online, or not? Please tell me the possibilities.
I want to ask the posibility whether half constructed site can re-make on Muse.The downloads folder in the history manager? I'm not sure what you mean.
When I click on History, I see what I've put in the screenshot. Then it starts telling me where I've been today. Nothing about downloads, per se. I've been getting at those through Tools/Downloads.
I have FireFox set up to ask me where downloads should go, rather than automatically sending them to my Downloads folder in Windows, and even if it had automatically saved to Downloads, it wouldn't still be there now.
In a pinch, I suppose I could skip the first few in the downloads list, and then start right-clicking on individual downloads and selecting Go To Download Page, but I was hoping there might be some way to narrow it down, by getting at the date on downloads. That's fairly easy in History, but I don't see any way to do it in Tools/Downloads. -
Why some times jdeveloper does not show a coreect design view ?
Hi
thank you for reading my post
why jdeveloper does not show a correct design view of jsf pages sometimes?
It does not shows labels and ... , just show tag names like : form , ... ?
here is a picture for this :
1-incorrect page:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/59086726@N00/217556594/
2-correct page :
http://www.flickr.com/photos/59086726@N00/217556595/
I just closed and open the IDE and page designer shows incorrect pages
thanksAlso try this...go to the project properties for the View project. Look at the JSF Libraries and remove the two JSF libraries and then re-add them....this sometimes helps.

Hi all
I am developing a enterprise application using Struts 1.2,Spring 2.0 and Hibernate 3.0.Now i am concentrating in design pattern of my application. I read many article, there I Could find many pattern like session facade, business delegate, service locator, layered pattern ,etc. I came to know that business delegate and session facade are useful for EJB based application with distributed environment. My application does not need distributed environment. I have a plan to implement design pattern as follows
Presentation layer -Struts
Data Transfer object or Value object -with support from Struts form Bean
Business layer - Spring ,Transaction management with spring AOP ,
Persistence layer -Hibernate with spring support.
Service locator - implemented by Spring application context file.
IN the above, layers orders may change, pls ignore that.
Please suggest ,it is a correct design or any enhancement can be given to this pattern.
Any with relevant examples are really appreciated
Thanks in advanceFor Data Access layer you will be having a Query or stored procedure defined which will be in Sync with your Orchestration . So whenever there is request coming from UI you need to call this Orchestration through schema or Orchestration exposed as web service.
So there are two pointers.
1) consume your Query or Stored procedure inside your Orchestration (with WCF SQL or WCF Oracle adapter). various articles exist to implement it
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd787968.aspx
http://btsguru.blogspot.in/2011/08/wcf-sql-adapter-stored-procedure.html
2) Once done you can expose your request response schema as web service

Design a dimension with skip-level hierarchy and its ETL
Hi gurus,
I'm trying to understand how to set up and use a skip level dimension and its corresponding mapping in OWB 11.2.
A simplified version of my hierarchy would be like Total-Brand-LOB-Product where Some Products connect directly to Brand and others connect to LOB.
My first question is about designing this kind of dimension in OWB. Is it better to create a single hierarchy with the Product level skipped to Brand level or 2 hierarchies - one Total-Brand-LOB-Product and the other Total-Brand-Product?
My second question is about creating its corresponding ETL mapping. Selecting each option above result in 2 FKs for Brand and LOB in Product level. What is the correct design to fill these 2 FKs?
Any help/guidance would be truly appreciated!
Thanks,
ImanHi, My problem is that in my report it is showing me that levels as -- A -> B -> C -> Null -> Null -> F, however I want to show data as A -> B -> C -> F, i.e the null valus(columns) should be skipped. Please help.

Requirements for database design and installation
Hi,
As a database administrator, how to find out whether the database is design and installed properly?
Can you please what would be the requirements to be considered towards the databse design for application developer ?
thanks heaps !!!!Mohamed ELAzab wrote:
regarding that the number of execution is the main thing that affects the performance i said that already above " the application executed it 30 000" but you didn't read my answer correctly. I did not respond to that "answer" of yours as it was not part of your posting that I responded too. In your response, which I quoted, talked about non-sharable SQL retrieving 20 rows and after 3 years it retrieving a million rows. This has no bearing on whether the SQL is sharable or not.
I don't agree with you regarding that the design is not being done regarding considering the performance bottlenecks.So you decide on what the bottlenecks are up front, and then use these as database design considerations? I fail to see any logic or merit in such an approach.
i want to let you know that we in the telecoms environment have many problems in our databases because the people who designed those applications didn't take performance in consideration.I understand too well - and it is not that they did not take performance into consideration when designing the database, it is because the design is just plain wrong from the start.
You do not need to consider amount of memory available, number and speed of CPUs, bandwidth and speed of the I/O system, in order to design a database. These have no relevance at all during the design phase. Especially as the h/w that will run the design in production in a year's time can be drastically different from the h/w that will be used today.
No, instead you use a proper and correct design methodology and data modeling approach. Why? Because such a design by its very nature will make optimal use of h/w resources and will provide data integrity, scalability and performance.
Again i think design of the database application must take database performance bottlenecks in consideration like application which doesn't use bind variables if they took into consideration to avoid that it will help the DBA in the future but unfortunately most people doesn't do that. And as I said - using bind variables or not has absolutely nothing to do with the basic question asked in this thread: "+what are the requirements of database design+".
How does using/not using bind variables influence the design of a table? Determine whether an entity is in 3NF? What the unique identidiers are for an entity? These are the design considerations for a database.. not bind variables.
Yes, SQLs not using bind variables can cause performance problems. Not paying the electricity bill can cause a power outage for the database server. So what? These issues have no relevance to database design. -
Why the hell does Oracle say there all into Linux... but yet 1/2 there development software is only on windows???
I want Oracle9i Designer on LINUX!!!Robert,
You are correct Designer is not available on Linux. We realise that the link http://otn.oracle.com/software/products/ids/designer_content.html is misleading. While it it true that iDS is available for Linux, the Designer client is only available for a windows environment.

Menu Design using Event Handler and Containers
I am going to redesign my menu interface using a Labview Event Structure which has many control on tab pages. I want to start out doing the correct design approach here. By registering the front panel controls[] property as an event, I can write event cases for each of the controls on the front panel. However, I run into difficulty when I have controls on tab pages. I have attached a VI which shows how I want to set it up. The event hanlder only fires when I change pages on the tab control.
What is a good way to be able to decipher individual controls on the tab control and
what is the characteristic (label, ref number, etc) that I should be writing the event cases on for good code maintenance?
Solved!
Go to Solution.
Attachments:
Generic Menu.vi 14 KBLooking at your code, you registered for value change events for controls on the front panel, not in the tab control. Use the property node for the tab control to get the references to the pages and for each page get the references for the controls on that page. Build an array of all controls on all pages (or you could separate the registration for each page to make your life easier potentially) and register those controls for value change events. Threading design for jTable that uses AbstractTableModel & jProgressBar
The application consists of a number of jTables that are filled using individual classes that extend AbstactTableModel. I want to use a jProgressBar (setIndeterminate(true)) to show progress is happening when a Search button is pressed. A code snippet is shown below. The method doSearch() calls the classes that populate the jTables. The code works fine but is wrong as components are being updated by a thread other than the EDT. Does this need a complete re-factoring? What design pattern should I be looking to use? Without using this extra thread I cannot get the jProgressBar to show progress.
if (IbagDatabase.theInstance().isConnected()) {
jProgressBarSearch.setVisible(true);
jProgressBarSearch.setStringPainted(true); //get space for the string
jProgressBarSearch.setIndeterminate(true);
jProgressBarSearch.setString("Searching ..."); //display % string
Runnable i = new Runnable() {
public void run() {
doSearch();
jProgressBarSearch.setIndeterminate(false);
jProgressBarSearch.setString("");
jProgressBarSearch.setVisible(false);
Thread t = new Thread( i );
t.start();
//doSearch();
}Using a separate Thread for the long running task is the correct design.
The only change you need is that when you want to update a GUI component you need to wrap the update code in a SwingUtilities.invokeLater(...). Read the Swing tutorial on [url http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/misc/threads.html]How to Use Threads for more information. -
Let me explain you the Multiprovider report with example .
Multiprovider is created based on Basic cube and DSO . Basic cube has Billing doc number in line item dimension .
DSO has Billing document number , Item number and Partner function as primary key.
I have Created one diemension on Multiprovider where I have assigned Billing document number , and other 2 data fields from DSO which are not available in Cube . Is it correct design ?
DSO have below records .. - Doc no , Item and PF are primary key of DSO .
Billing doc no Partner function Personal Number Customer number
100 ER 1
100 Y1 555
100 Y2 111
In Cube I have below records -
Billing doc no Sales Org Netvalue Total sale
100 001 $ 3000 $3200
200 001 $ 5000 $5100
When I execute the report based on MP by partner function i should get below result.
Billing doc PF Personal Number Customer number Netvalue Total sales
100 ER 1 555 3000 3200
Is it possible ?
Let me know if my question is not clear .
RegardHi
Multiprovider is a union of infoproviders.So you can achieve the report you want by building a Multiprovider with the Cube and DSO.You have to assign the Billing doc no to both Cube and DSO during the craetion of the Multiprovider.
When you execute the report on the MP on Purchase Order, all the values of Billing doc no will be fetched from both cube and DSO(as MP is a union).
According you can set a filter to fetch only specfic data from a specific part-provider of the Multiprovider.
Also At query Designer level a InfoObject : 0INFOPROV will be available which will give and option to fetch the data only from a specifi part provider of MP if required.

First try with ALV Grid and Abap Objects
Hi,
this is my first try to write a simple report which just reads a textfile and display it in an ALV Grid. As a basis, I used some examples from SDN, but it did not work as expected
I would like just to use a docking container. I do not need a separate area for the ALV Grid. The report gives no syntax errors, but it just display the report title, nothing else. SAP R/3 Release is 4.7. Below is the source code of the report. Any idea what is missing?

ENDFORM. "build_fieldcatalogI have added some more functionality to my report. The good thing is, the report works as it should.
BUT, I'm not really sure, whether this is a good (correct) design. The report works the following way:
1. Read planning data form text file into internal table
2. Display the internal table
3. Convert the data and display the converted result
4. Post the converted data to the system
5. Display log with messages
The main thing is, I would like to know, do i really need two dynros, to display the two different internal tables or is it possible just to use one ALV-Grid? I was not able to find another solution. Any comment or help to the report is appreciated.

Dynamic insertion of data in a Dynamic Column in a table
Hi EveryBody ,
I have a table where i am increasing the column dynamically . I need to insert data through PreparedStatement Like
pst = con.prepareStatement(CBBsqlConstants.addOrderItem);
pst.setString(1,ein);
pst.setString(2,insert_date);
pst.setString(3,checkList);
pst.setString(4,Quantities);
pst.setDate(5,pick_date);
pst.setDate(6,completed_date);
pst.setString(7,comment);
pst.setInt(8,status);
pst.setString(9,agent_ein);
i = pst.executeUpdate();
But here my column is increasing dynamically, so the above cant be constant as column is incresing . how do i handle the insertion part dynamically.
Thanks So much . Please help with this .Server_java wrote:
Ya you are right ,
Take i am ordering some Items and quantity from checkbox and inserting that to the table , each item and quantity is going to consume a row , but when i am going have column for each item , all the items i am going to select is going to appear in a single row . so i am consuming .But only 256 column is allowed for a table ,but my item is not going to excced that . That maximum number of columns is the least of the problems here.
The problem is that you are taking data that should be in another table and turning it into metadata instead. That's a mistake because it makes your entire application brittle and it doesn't need to be. It also will make querying your table a nightmare.
Let's take a look at your solution and then the correct solution.
Your solution (condensed)
tblOrder
id
customername
apples
oranges
bananas
cherries
Sample data (CSV format for the forum)
1,"John Smith",0,0,0,1
2,"Jane Smith",1,0,0,3
3,"Kate Smith",0,2,1,0
The correct solution
tblOrder
id
customername
Sample data
1,"John Smith"
2,"Jane Smith"
3,"Kate Smith"
tblProduct
id
name
Sample data
1, "Apples"
2,"Oranges"
3, "Bananas"
4, "Cherries"
tblOrderItem
orderid
productid
quantity
Sample data
1,4,1
2,1,1
2,4,3
3,2,2
3,3,1
So what's the difference?
With your design what happens when you want to add a new fruit? Your schema changes and all your code breaks. With my design you simply insert one row and that's it.
And what happens if you do happen to eventually need more than 250 odd fruits? With your design you are screwed. With my correct design it's never going to be a problem.
And consider that with my design you can populate user inteface components using actual data and not table meta data.
And the list goes on... the point is the only correct solution is to use a proper relational design.
