Phantom Frame Appears Between Two Clips

I am new to FCP. When I play my video in the timeline, a phantom frame from another clip plays between two clips. I don't know if I accidentally placed one of the clips on top of it or something when I was moving clips, but I can't figure out how to get rid of it. I deleted the two videos one at a time to see which clip it was attached to, but the phantom frame played no matter which of the two I deleted. I also used the blade to cut the end of the first clip and the beginning of the other, but it still appeared. I therefore figure it must be between the two clips, but I can't find anything between them to select. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you very much.
ETA; When I look closely, I think the black gap between the two clips is larger than the slight black gap between normal clips, so maybe that does indicate there's something there?

Here is a shot of a time line where I have zoomed in as far as I can. At this level of zoom, a single frame can barely fit on my screen. If you maximize your zoom you should see only the thin line as shown between the partial frame on the right and the one on the left. If you see something more – either a gap or a clip with content – you should be able to select and delete it.

  • Phantom Frame Appears Between Two Clips Updated Question

I can't edit my other question anymore, so here's a follow-up. When I move from edit point to edit point, there does appear to be one between the two clips. I hit Select using the dropdown menu, but the options to cut or delete are grayed out afterwards, so it doesn't seem like anything is getting selected. Does anyone know how to select a clip too small to see? Thank you.
Final Update: I got it selected and deleted! I just moved the cursor along the bottom of the timeline instead of moving it in the middle of the timeline, which was just giving me the double-arrow handle thing, or whatever it is.
    Thanks for looking!

In my continued conversation with myself, I'm replying so I can figure out how to mark question answered.

  • Inserting video between two clips

Hi does anyone know how to insert video between two clips without erasing some of the two clips. I want to insert and have the other clips just make room for the new clip, extending the timeline the necessary amount. I thought you could just drag it in but it keeps erasing the existing footage in the timeline. Any advise would be awesome

Make sure the playhead is parked between two clips, and drag the clip from the browser/viewer to the canvas, dropping it on the "insert" box in the edit overlay. Or you could drag the clip from the viewer/browser to the timeline but make sure the arrow that appears is facing to the right, not down.

  • Inserting a clip between two clips

I'm trying to insert a clip between two clips yet still having everything from all V/A 1,2,3,4,etc. layers to move along with whatever clip is moved down the line. Everyone keep saying: Use the ctrl key! but all that does is indeed move some of it down but it cuts bits of the video in the process. I'm not sure how to solve this. I simply want to drag and drop an item between two clips and not cut or mess up any additional V layers.

You can load a title into the Source Monitor by dragging it there from the Project Panel. But you can also use the insert command directly from the Project panel, via either the context menu or the same shortcut.
Be aware that if the sequence has In/Out points set, then the Insert & Overwrite commands will insert the selected source into that range. This is known as 3-point or 4-point editing (depending on whether you have both in & out points set in both the source and the sequence). If In/Out points are not set in the sequence, then the source is inserted at the playhead's position in the Timeline.
Also, source patching controls which tracks the clip is placed on. If you're not familiar with source patching, this tutorial video is worth watching.

  • How to SIMPLY add audio crossfade between two clips ?

Tried to make a simple cut edit for tv news.
How to add an audio crossfade between two clips to soften transition ?
Detach audio, then create audio only scenario, then add transition ? Unusable.
When importing 8 tracks from Xdcam HD, how do you choose wich audio track to add your transition to ?
Also, impossible to re-export to Xdcam disk on the field.
This piece of software is simply unusable in real life pro conditions. Some very nice features, globally a disaster.

First thank you all for taking time to reply.
I found these solutions myself but for me these are only workaround.
In Fcp7, you just had to drag and drop dissolve transition to clips junctions TO AUDIO TRACK ONLY. Very quick and simple. In Fcpx, it is very time consuming if you want to add audio crossfade to every clip junction in a full project. That's really not a software evolution in my opinion...
I think "easy transitions to audio tracks only" has to be implemented in next version.
    Thanks again !

  • Is there a shortcut for fading audio to zero and back up between two clips?

I'm trying to determine if there is a shortcut for this situation in FCP 5...
You have two audio clips butted adjacent to each other.
You want the first clip to fade down to zero (i.e. silence).
You want the second clip to fade up from zero.
So basically you have a split second of silence between the two clips.
The video equivalent would be touching black for a second between the
two clips. You can use the "Fade In Fade Out Dissolve" to do it fast.
I realize you can accomplish this audio manuvers with 4 keyframes and the pen tool. I know you can also put an audio transisions on the end of each clip. There are a bunch of ways of getting there, but is there a really
fast way like the "Fade In Fade Out Video dissolve" or a keyboard shortcut?
    Thanks for any feedback.

When I need to do somethig like that I make sure there at least a 1 frame gap between the two and ad audio transitions on the end of clip 1 and the beginning of clip 2.
If someone has a faster way, i'd love to know it.

  • Glitch between two clips

I'm fairly new, so please forgive me if there is a simple answer to my question. I converted the files from my camcorder to edit them in FCE. While I had seamless recording, the camcorder split my footage up into two files. When I put the two files together in FCE there is a glitch (or skip) that is a fraction of a second when I play the footage in FCE. The footage is of a dance recital- right in the middle of a song. Is there any way to merge the two clips so they are seamless? (I already tried adding a transition-it won't let me do it). Please help!

    Hi -
Place the playhead a few frames ahead of the where the disturbance is and play through it frame by frame by tapping the right arrow key. At the point of the disturbance is there a repeated extra frame, or is there a frame missing?
If there is an extra frame you can edit that out by placing the playhead on the first frame after the edit between sections and marking both and in and an out point on the same frame. Then hold the shift key down and press the Delete key that is located next to the "+" sign.
    Does this fix it?
If not, type Command + Z to undo what you just did.
If it turns out to be a missing frame (or frames) there is not much you can do to fix it.
You can try to re-capture just the section of the performance (starting say 20 seconds before and ending 20 seconds after) from your camcorder and if the area is not disturbed, you could match cut the good footage into the sequence.
If the disturbance is there coming of the camcorder, I'm not sure what else to recommend.
    Hope this helps.

  • I am trying to put a transition between two clips and it's not going.

I am working in FInal Cut Pro X and until now have had no problem putting trasitions into my timeline. Now I'm trying to put it between two video clips and it's not even moving there. Is there something I might have turned off that's not allowing me to do this

    You mean red like this
That's the end of the media. No handles for an overlap. You can still do a full overlap transition, but it will shorten the project and shift the content.

  • Comparing vector/waveform scopes between two clips

Is there a way to bring up the scopes for two separate clips to compare them as one can do in Premiere?  I use the 2-up function often to compare clips visually, but it just does not cut it for some corrections.

You can't have scopes on more than one clip in Sg, this is something that gets asked for every once in a while, and certainly would be most useful ... so please file a feature request for this ...
Adobe Bug Report /Feature Request form ...
    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
Other than that, dummergold's suggestion of doing a screen-grab of the scopes on one clip & comparing that to "live" Sg scopes on the other is the only workaround. In Windows, there's the handy "Snipping Tool" in the programs/accessories folder. I put that on my taskbar so I can access it anytime in any program. You then just drag a diagonal box over the part of the screen you want to "snap" and it makes a jpg/png for you. I don't know what there's available on the Mac side of things.

  • Multiple clips in one timeline - Frame freezes between each clips!!!

Yeah, I've read a couple of topics and didn't found any real info about my problems...
All my clips are encoded in mpeg2DVD... I've created one timeline and put all of these in order... When I'm watching the preview, everything is fine... BUT after I burned the DVD... on players, it freezes every time the clips changes... just for a second... but it's really annoying...
It's like all the time a clip changes on my timeline, it senses it... and freeze a little bit...
    I've erased all the chapters...
    Tried the play lists...
Wonder if there's anything else I can do to?

You're not going to get around this using MPEG-2 files.
What the function is actually doing (under the hood) is creating VM commands that go from one movie to the next movie. This is why the pause - the player is "reading" the commands at the end of the clip, as it needs to know where to go next. It's effectively a POST command linking the end action of one timeline to the next.
You can always try using AVI files, and allowing Encore to transcode the timelines to MPEG-2 - this might get around the problem.

  • Create frames in-between two instances

I'm working on some practice animations, but the issue I've been having is that I don't know how I can work on my inbetweening on a video layer with onion-skinning enabled. I know I could just switch to frame-by-frame animation, but I wanted to have onion-skinning enabled still so that I can make my inbetween animations more acurate. Is there something I am missing in particular that can allow me to do this?

PS only does simplified interpolation. You can't tweak anything here. You wil lhave to use After Effects or other tools for more refined control.

  • 'phantom' fields appearing several edits down the line...

I've been transferring stuff from PAL composite video via a Canopus ADVC300: http://desktop.grassvalley.com/products/ADVC300/index.php It creates huge AVI files which I then convert to a size I want to work with.
I've been working on something that was edited 20 years ago on a VHS suite (no seriously!) and had no probs until creating a QT movie that I want to transcode on to DVD. At this stage I've started seeing 'ghost' fields of material from the frame before and after (actually it might be only the frame before, but I'm not sure) which I've not seen before.
    What has happened?
My workfow is way too complex to describe here, but what should I do in the future to assure it doesn't happen again?
And what tweaks in the Premiere render settings should I try out that might fix this now?
I'm currently rendering to NTSC D1/DV (well, something like that).
    Cheers!

It creates huge AVI files which I then convert to a size I want to work with.
What conversion method and what file format/CODEC are you converting to?
I has seen "phantom" Frames and even small Clips, when MPEG-2's were edited. I would guess that it has to do with the GOP structure. In these cases, the users had little "snippets" from much earlier, that just appeared much later.
I strongly recommend editing the Edius/Canopus DV-AVI Type II's, as you will have fewer issues. Yes, they are large, but worth the HDD real estate.
    Good luck,

  • IMovie HD 6 - Cannot insert transitions between short clips

I am attempting to assemble a movie using several short (8-15 second) clips. When I attempt to insert transitions, I get the following message:
"You cannot apply a transition between very short clips. They must each be at least 3:49:16 long."
I assume they mean 3 min, 48 sec, 16 frames. I don't remember having this issue before.
Is this something wrong with my installation, or do you really need 4 minute clips?

No, your iMovie program is acting strangely. For some reason iMovie believes that you are trying to insert a transition of almost 4 minutes duration between two clips of 15 seconds duration. (I can't recall any transitions longer than 10 seconds.) So it is giving you a message that your clips need to be longer.
When iMovie starts acting strangely, a commonly done procedure is this: Shut down iMovie and trash the file com.apple.iMovie.plist located in User/Library/Preferences. iMovie will create a new file on relaunch. Also, do a simple permissions repair using the Utilities/Disk utility application on your Mac. Then launch iMovie and see if your transitions work.
If your transitions still don't work, make sure that your Quicktime is updated to current version, and do a permissions repair like above after updating.

  • Transitions between split clips don't work properly

If I split a clip in the project area, then put a transition between the two new clips, the transition doesn't work properly. It is most obvious with the Cross Dissolve, which doesn't work at all. Some of the others sort of look like they are working, but if you look closely, they are not working correctly- i.e. not in the same way that transitions between two clips dragged separately to the project area from the events area work.
Any one else notice this, or better yet, have a fix?

    OK- I discovered a work-around.
In the project area if you select the split part following the transition, Cut it (Command x) then Paste it (Command v) back in the proper place, the transition works properly. Usually cutting and pasting the following half of a split clip fixes the transition, but sometimes I have to cut and paste both the part before the transition and the part after it to get things to work right.
