Phone firmware update over http

Hi all,
a former colleague of mine told a customer that starting CUCM 9 phone firmware updates would happen over http and no longer using tftp. Now that customer is asking me about it, and I can't seem to find any indication there to support this. Am I not looking in the right places?
Kind regards,
Tom

Hey Guys,
This definetly seems poorly documented. Although you can find a reference here that it does exists.
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/port/9_0_1/CUCM_BK_T98E8963_00_tcp-port-usage-guide-90/CUCM_BK_T98E8963_00_tcp-port-usage-guide-90_chapter_01.html
Endpoint or Gateway
Unified CM
6970 / TCP
Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) between master and proxy servers.
HTTP service from the TFTP server to phones and gateways.
Apparently CME folks did a much better work document this. I would file a documentation bug if I were you.
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucme/admin/configuration/guide/cmeadm/cmesystm.html
HFS Download Support for IP Phone Firmware and Configuration Files
Legacy IP phones access the TFTP server to download firmware and configuration files but Cisco Unified CME 8.8 enhances download support for SIP phone firmware, scripts, midlets, and configuration files using the HTTP File-Fetch Server (HFS) infrastructure.
In Cisco Unified CME 8.8 and later versions, SIP phones use an HTTP server as the primary download service when it is configured and access a TFTP server as a secondary or fallback option when the HTTP server fails.
Note When the HFS download service is not configured, SIP phones automatically access the TFTP server.
The following scenario shows a successful download sequence using an HTTP server:
An IP phone initiates TCP connection to port 6970. A connection is established and an internal request for a file is sent to the HTTP server. The phone receives the HTTP response status code of 200, signifying that the download is successful.
The following scenario shows a download sequence that begins with an IP phone using an HTTP server to download files and ends with a TFTP server as a fallback option when the initial download attempt fails:
An IP phone initiates TCP connection to port 6970 but is unable to establish a connection. The phone contacts the TFTP server and sends an internal request for a file. The file is successfully downloaded from the TFTP server.
The following scenario shows how a download sequence that starts with an HTTP server does not always fall back to the TFTP server when the initial download attempt fails:
An IP phone initiates TCP connection to port 6970. A connection is established and an internal request for a file is sent to the HTTP server. The phone receives the HTTP response status code of 404, signifying that the file requested could not be found. Because the file cannot be found, the request is not sent to the TFTP server.
Note The configuration files are shared by the HTTP and TFTP servers. However, the firmware files are different for each server.
Enabling the Service
To enable the HFS download service, the underlying HTTP server must be enabled first because the HFS infrastructure is built on top of an existing IOS HTTP server.
Router(config)# ip http server
This HFS infrastructure enables multiple HTTP services to co-exist. The HFS download service runs on custom port 6970 but can also share default port 80 with other services. Other HTTP services run on other non-standard ports like 1234.
Router(config)# ip http server
Router(config)# ip http port 1234
The HFS download service starts when the following is configured in telephony-service configuration mode.
For the default port:
Router(config-telephony)# hfs enable
For the custom port:
Router(config-telephony)# hfs enable port 6970
Note If the entered custom HFS port clashes with the underlying IP HTTP port, an error message is displayed and the command is disallowed.
In the following example, port 6970 is configured as the IP HTTP port. When the HFS port is configured with the same value, an error message is displayed to show that the port is already in use.
Router (config)# ip http port 6970
Router (config)# telephony-service
Router (config-telephony)# hfs enable port 6970
rror Message Invalid port number or port in use by other applicationxplanation The HFS port number is already in use by the underlying IP HTTP server.
Recommended Action Use an HFS port that is different from the underlying IP HTTP port.
Note Because IP phones are hardcoded to use port 6970 to connect to Cisco Unified CME, you must search for other applications running on port 6970 and assign them with ports different from 6970 to prevent a failure in connecting to Cisco Unified CME.
For configuration information, see the “SIP: Enabling the HFS Download Service” section.

• Phone Firmware Updates

I have looked at the page, and haven't been able to locate anything about firmware updates.
Basically, what I am looking for is find something regarding the next firmware updates. Specifically, what functionality is apple working on adding into the iPhone? (MMS, copy & paste)...?
Also, where is there somewhere PUBLIC, and STICKIED that iPhone users can REQUEST such upgrades to these devices.
I have seen such threads at other forums, yet I am not able to find one here. (perhaps I just missed it).
I love my iPhone, but hate the functionally, I can't copy & paste, can't send/recieve MMS, can't forward a text, etc. etc. etc...... the list goes on...

roaminggnome
Its true, I didn't, no where was it mentioned either when I saw their ad that they would not allow something so rudimentary as copy and paste , something that's been around since the 80's I think, how could one suspect this. That's not exactly my fault, nor would it have been my fault if for example their keyboard didn't have, lets say, a space bar. After using a couple of other similar pda/phones (not the blackberry) that allowed so many things that apple didn't, how can anyone imagine the iphone would be lacking such obviously needed things. The thing that attracted me to the iphone was the screen size, maps, and supposed speedy internet. Anyway, I'm waiting on this new Nokia 5800, I think that's the model. The new google phone looks good also but we'll see. All I know is, as is, the iphone is not for me and I haven't been recommending it to anyone. Its funny to see people squinting when trying to explain that the phone can't copy and paste, and that if you want to bring some docs with you, you have to buy 3rd party software, figure out how to set up the software with your wifi, which only works 50% of the time if you're lucky, how such a big phone's speaker is so quiet that I have to put it on vibrate and still miss calls because I can't hear anything most of the time, ya, you can surf the internet but only part of the internet because the iphone doesn't support flash and a great percentage of the internet uses flash. I recently was trying check out new car prices only I couldn't because the 3 I tryed were using flash (I guess) and wouldn't load, and so on and so on and so on.

• Language after phone firmware update

Hi, I have a Nokia 6233 (product code:0538465), purchased in Slovenia and ofcourse it has slovenian language. The reason why I wish to update my phone is, because it restarts really often when I am using the internet. My main concerne is now: Will I have Slovenian language after I update? Phones current firmware version is v5.10. Thanks for any helpful answers.

If your phone was originally purchased with Slovenian language support, that updating to new firmware will not result in language loss. However if you phone is originally made for other market then you will loose your language.

• Nokia C7 Cell phone firmware update?

When I tried to update the firmware in a Mexican made Nokia C7 (Latest available software for your device: Version:: 013.016), it said it had the latest but when I updated the same model made in Hungary the firmware was (Latest available software for your device: Version:: 025.007) much newer than in the former one. • Firmware update for 6131 does not work

I am trying to upgrade the firmware on a 6131. Following the instructions on the site leads me to navigate the following path: Menu > Settings > Phone > Phone updates > Download phone software.
Bzzzzzz. No. 'Download phone software' is not an option. Only 'Current software details' and 'Install software update'. The latter option is dim, and selecting it returns a message: 'No software to install', obviously, because it has not downloaded it.
So I try to push the software from Nokia's web site: http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,,77073,00.html > Get Advanced Settings > Accept Terms > Start > model 6131 > Next > Nokia software (firmware) update over-the-air > Enter security code and my phone number > Order Settings
The page claims it has sent me a text message, including the new software, but it never arrives. I tried with with other 'settings' from the same page several times, and the text messages did arrive just fine for those.
Please help. Thank you,
--Jimbo -
P.S. In case you are wondering, the reason I am trying to update the firmware is that the status of the voicemail waiting indicator is never updated. I have seen at least a dozen posts about that issue, but never one with an answer attached. So this is my next step.

Do you mean you're having a problem trying to download the update, install the update, after the update is installed trying to re-activate the phone? I assume you're getting this message on your PC, not the phone...? Or are you having problems with Internet connectivity on the phone itself? WiFi or 3G?
If it's problems on the PC, try disabling all antivirus/firewall software and see if that takes care of it.

• EFI firmware update & first crash

I updated yesterday my Mac pro with the Efi firmware update.
The 2 first trials to update didn't work and then I unplugged the 2 external firewire drives and my powerbook that was connected via a cross-over cabel and it finally worked.
I immediately was aware that the computer was running much faster (starting up, loading programs, etc) and that I had more free memory available.
The mac is running with only 1GB of ram (waiting for 2 GB more).
Today I experienced my first total crash. The screens went half dark and I was was asked to restart with the power button. At the time I only had mail and safari running. I was away for 10 min, so I might have put the mac to sleep (don't remember).
Have any of you out there experienced similar crashes?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I don't think installing firmware updates over the network works. Migrate the firmware update installer to the machine that has the need for the firmware and install it from there when nothing else is attached to it.
Also there is a firmware downgrade program which I suggest you install first before reinstalling the firmware over again:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/firmwarerestorationcd11.html
Make sure any third party PCI cards (except the graphics card which came with your computer), USB and Firewire devices are removed before installing the firmware update.

• Mavericks upgrade and Thunderbolt firmware update?

Hi Guys,
last week I installed mavericks to an external hard drive and am currently using my early 2011 MBP as a dual boot using Lion and Mavericks. The main reason is because my audio software is no longer being updated in Lion.
My next purchase once I start using Mav full time, will either be a belkin thunderbolt dock or the akitio thunder dock. So I can run my hard drives, tv etc from the thunderbolt port.
Problem is, I'm unsure if I can update my thunderbolt port in my machine, and both docks will only run on thunderbolt two.
in about this mac my information is this:
Model Identifier:     MacBookPro8,2
Boot ROM Version:     MBP81.0047.B27
SMC Version (system):     1.69f4
If I install the firmware updates here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
will I be able to update the firmware for my thunderbolt port from
Firmware Version:     22.1
Port Micro Firmware Version:     2.0.7
to whatever the latest one is, because I saw a post saying the latest frimware version is 25.1
any advice/ideas?
Cheers Iain.

I emailed Akitio and got this reply.
"The AKiTiO Thunder Dock is using Thunderbolt 1 but it's compatible with  both Thunderbolt 1 and Thunderbolt 2, so you can use it on earlier  machines as well as the latest Thunderbolt 2 machines. However, the  minimum system requirement is Mac OS X 10.9, so you will need to use  Mavericks.
Regarding the EFI and SMC firmware, it's good to use the latest version  and we usually recommend to update it as part of our troubleshooting  process. The page you provided is the one I would have suggested too, so  you can follow the links there and update your machine.
Keep in mind that this will not upgrade your Thunderbolt port as you put it, it only updates the firmware of your system."

• TS3499 MacBook SMC Firmware Update 1.4 won't install

Just received my new Magsafe 60w Power Adaptor from the apple store today, however although it is powering my MacBook, it is not charging it.
I bought my MacBook in early 2008 and it is version 10.5.8, it has an intel core 2 duo processor, and leapord OSX, so I looked for solutions and followed this guide on the apple support site http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3499.
I dowloaded the firmware update http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1312 accordingly but when I try to install it, it says " Alert: This computer does not need this update"
I looked at other solutions, and tried removing the battery and holding down the power button for 5 secs, I've checked that my Mac intel dual core is using the GUID disk partition which it is.
So I am pretty much lost with what to do, has anyone else had this problem and managed to resolve it?
Thanks Anyone

• Programmer's button  and firmware update

This issue is of more general nature, at least B&Ws use similar procedure, maybe all newer Macs. An OS 9 program (firmware updater), a separate firmware image, shutting down, pressing programmer's button... I would really like to understand the mechanism.
What happens when I push the programmers button? Is it just for opening the flash for writing?
Why did my iMac G3 SL chime after the beep and before the progress bar?
Where does the firmware updater place itself and the firmware image and how does open firmware find them? Would it be possible to place them there on another computer? Why is there a requirement that the boot disk is writable? I guess this makes it impossible to build a bootable CD that could make the update?
Is it really the firmware updater that writes the new firmware into the flash? Not some ROM routine?
How does the firmware updater decide its behaviour? When first run inside the OS it initiates the upgrade, then after pushing the programmer's button it does the real job, and when rebooting again it shows the result.
Why did Apple not make a version for OS X?

Have you tried connecting an external monitor to the computer with the black screen? That will sometimes work. Some people have managed to run the firmware update, even with a black screen, by being in a completely darkened room and being able to see just enough on the screen to run the update.
There are lots of tricks for getting firmware installed here.
Below is an excerpt regarding dealing with the blank screen issue:
39. If your iMac is booting up but you can't get a screen display then you have a few options to consider:
40. Some people have managed to do a "blind" firmware update. First of all it will be necessary to update the iMac's OS to 9.1 (unless you already have this or a later version of OS 9 installed) and get the firmware updater onto the HD.
41. There are different ways of doing this - e.g. take the HD out and put it into another Mac (Donna's note- to avoid a common confusion, please be aware that firmware does not "reside" on the HD at all, even though it needs to be run from the HD. For example, once your firmware has been updated, you can put a new hard drive into that iMac without needing to update the firmware again. However, this drive swapping may be a way to get the updater onto the drive and then put the drive back into the iMac and try to install the update - if that makes any sense); or if file sharing is on then you might be able to access the iMac's HD remotely for updating the OS and copying the firmware updater over; or you could try starting the problematic iMac in "FireWire target disk" mode. This allows you to connect to another Mac using a FireWire cable and have the iMac's HD appear as an external disk on the other Mac, allowing you to install OS 9.1 and copy the firmware updater over. You may also find this article helpful: Macintosh: Computer Does Not Enter Into FireWire Target Disk Mode.
42. If you have access to software such as Timbuktu for remotely controlling another machine then this would be a convenient way of seeing the screen of and controlling the problematic iMac.
43. If you really have no way of getting a screen display, then try putting the unpacked firmware updater in the Startup Items folder (contrary to the advice above in para. 35). Then when you boot OS 9.1 (or higher), the updater will automatically start. You will need to dismiss 2 (?) dialogs by pressing <Return>: the first is a licence agreement, and the second is the dialog to shut the iMac down. You will have to use your skill and judgement in determining when the iMac is ready for you to press Enter each time! Once the iMac has shut itself down in preparation for the firmware update you can proceed as per the published instructions.

• Successfully installed firmware update 1.0.1 - procedure

Step 1: Plug your MBP to power source
Step 2: In your Applications/Utilities Folder, delete the existing MacBook Pro Firmware Updater
Step 3: Download the Firmware Updater from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbookproearly2006firmwareupdate101.html
Step 4: Close all other applications and follow the instruction. MBP will automatically shut down.
Step 5: Press the "On" button and do not let go untill you here the long tone sound.
Step 6: You will see Apple logo and the progress bar. Do not do anything until the progress bar complete. System will shutdown and go to sleep mode. Press your mouse button and the MBP will reboot.
Step 7: You will see the message "Firmware successfully updated" if not God Bless You!!

thanks alot. i just did it. i agree, i dont think deleting the old updater helps, but for the safe side, i did it anyway. i think it's the pressing start button part that is most important. you have to press it long untill the light blinks very fast, and then followed by long tone sound (not the apple start-up sound). after that, you will see the progress bar. when it's finished, your volume seems to be reset because the start-up sound became so loud. and then, after you logged in, you will see the confirmation that your MacBook pro is updated with firmware updater 1.0.1

• Trackpad Firmware Update 1.0 Freezes / Hangs

I had a brand new MacBook out of the box a day ago. The only thing attached to it was the power cord. After a fresh setup for a new user a number of Apple software updates were found and I agreed to install them. Upon the first reboot the Trackpad Firmware Update application started up automatically. A gray box appeared with a warning not to interrupt or shut the power off to the Mac. I clicked "update" and the status bar started moving (no other applications had been opened). It got to about 95% done and hung. A one inch thick line of dark gray appeared to cover the top edge of the screen (it was translucent so I could still see through it).
I left the computer alone for 10 minutes because I was warned not to interrupt or shut the power off during the firmware update. With great reluctance I eventually pushed and held down the power button (there was no possible way to "Force Quit Applications" and the computer appeared completely hung).
After powering back up the machine the Trackpad Firmware Update application says the firmware is up-to-date and the trackpad appears to work. So it appears all is good. My questions are:
1) Is anyone else having this issue?
2) It is quite concerning to see a firmware update hang. Is it possible, or even advisable, to redo the update? The updater application won't allow it because the firmware is supposedly "up-to-date" but clearly there was an issue with it completing properly.
3) Can anyone explain what happened?
I have noticed people having other problems with the update but only a few talk about it freezing up or hanging up during the update itself.

Seems like some others have had this issue as well but certainly not everyone. I found the following:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=601850&page=2
http://twitter.com/sentience/status/1010513066
http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2008/11/17/apple-issues-update-for-no- button-trackpads-but-be-cautious
There is an article on "recovering from an interrupted trackpad firmware update" here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3312 but it seems to say you should be able to try updating again. When I relaunch the updater it says the firmware is up to date even though it never appeared to complete before I had to force a shut down. Hopefully a newer version is released sometime that doesn't freeze the system when installing.
