Photos, Camera Roll, and PhotoStream

I deleted a photo from Photos and PhotoStream on my iPad the other day. Then I went to iPhoto on my Mac and deleted the same photo from multiple PhotoStreams there. Then, a while later, figuring I had deleted the photo everywhere...when I was checking my Camera Roll on the iPad, I found the photo again!! Why are there SO MANY places where the same photo is stored? How can I be sure a photo is deleted EVERYWHERE on all devices?

When you take a photo with the iPad, it ends up in your Photo Stream and in the Camera Roll. That is really to the user's advantage so that one does not accidentally delete a photo in the Photo Stream that should have been saved by the user. Deleteing from the Photo Stream deletes it from that album on all devices,  but not from the Camera Roll album. That is where the photo is saved and if you want to delete it everywhere, you have to manually delete it in there as well.

  • IOS 8 - Disentangling Camera Roll and Photostream - help!

In iOS 8, Apple removed the “Camera Roll” and “Photostream” albums and collapsed them into a single stream of photos on the camera that can be accessed under “Collections”.  “Collections” also includes all other photos otherwise loaded onto the phone, e.g., via iPhoto. This new arrangement upsets several familiar ways in which I’ve been using my iPhone and its camera, and I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for how to recapture a few simple functions.  (I have submitted Feedback on the elimination of the Camera Roll, and with this post I am looking for practical solutions to a series of new problems.)
Question #1.  I maintained my Camera Roll as a reasonably-well curated set of maybe 300 photos & videos, taken on my phone, that I could pull up easily to show to people.  I would like to know if there is a way to restore that functionality in iOS 8.  “Recently added” does not go back far enough (one of my favorites was the very first photo I took with any iPhone, back in 2007); and “Collections” shows way too much – it includes everything in Photostream, as well as photos from Albums of scans, non-iPhone photos and other sources that I’ve synced to the phone with iPhoto.  Thousands of photos.  I also don’t care for the way in which Collections interrupts the thumbnails with date and location information.
Question #2.  I kept Photostream turned on on my phone, because I liked the idea of automatically uploading photos to the cloud, particularly on trips when I was not in a position to download the photos directly to a computer for backup and safekeeping.  However, now that Apple has eliminated the distinction between “photos in my pocket” and “photos in the cloud”, it appears that whenever I want to delete a photo from my phone (e.g. to save space) I must also delete the corresponding Photostream copy.  Is there a way, with Photostream on, to delete local photos without also deleting the copy that has been uploaded to the cloud?
Question #3.  I have a few old iOS devices that I let my kids use.  They like to take photos and screenshots.  Most of them are pretty stupid but once in a while they do something great. I’ve left Photostream on on those devices to see what they’re up to, and to capture the occasional gem.  This was fine, when “Photostream” was a separate Album that I could look at, or not, as I chose.  In iOS 8 however, all of their junk photos appear in “Collections” and are as much a part of my phone’s photo repository as the carefully-curated Camera Roll photos used to be.  Is there a way to keep Photostream photos out of my “Collection”?
Question #4.  I suppose someone could write an app that does nothing but display photos that were captured by, and reside physically, on the device.  Perhaps someone already has, if anyone knows.  Of course I’d prefer to use the native app for this function, but I’d take the function over nativity if I had to choose.
Question #5. Does anyone know (“know” – please no speculation, and nothing that an NDA forbids) how the iCloud Photo Library, which dropped back to beta in the final release of iOS 8, works? Does it provide the backup and safekeeping function of Photostream, along with the ability to view that set of photos separately?  If so then I could turn off Photostream and at least get rid of that clutter.
Thanks for any and all help.  And by way of reminder - https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html .

Here's one, eh, kludgy fix for Question #1.  I don't exactly recommend it - it can be pretty laborious - but in the end it seems to get me back to about where I started with my Camera Roll.
Go into "Collections" and scroll back to about the date at which you expect to find your first native iPhone photo.  (I have many imported photos that predate iPhone, so I can't just look at the first ones.)  Tap through until you are looking at a single photo.  Look at the bottom.  If it displays a "Favorites" heart, it's physically on your iPhone (and as best I can tell, was taken by the device).  Tag it as a favorite.  Swipe to the next photo.  Skip if it shows no Favorites heart - that means it's not on your phone - and tag it if it does.
At the end of this process (did I mention it's laborious?), you should have a Favorites album that matches the photos that were on your Camera Roll when you upgraded to iOS 8.

  • Ios - 8 where are the 'camera roll' and 'photostream' albums?

I see the ios8 had done away with the "camera roll" and "photostream" albums and replace them with a "recently added" album. Is there any way to get this old functionality back?
All I want is one folder that contains all the photos on my device and another that contains the photos that I'm happy to share across my devices. I would have hoped I could have create some smart albums, but albums seem to have to be curated manually.
I know I can see all my photos with the photos tab, but there are two issue I have with this, #1 the "collections" interface is horrible – I just want a nice grid of photos like in albums – and #2 my photostream photos are merge within them.
I now have no way of telling if I'm deleting a photo from the phone or the photostream, for example when I'm trying to free up space on the phone.
Would turning on the "icloud photo library" feature help? I would rather not use that as I don't want it to waste all my icloud space.

So, basically now... the gallaries are gonna be the same. Because if you delete one photo from the iphone, you also delete it from ipad and viceversa.
This is stupid because i want to keep some photos on the ipad, but don't wanna have them on the phone.
AM I FORCED TO HAVE IPAD AND IPHONE WITH THE SAME PHOTOS???
    what's the point in this???
This is so stupid. if you find any solution, please help.
PS: I have not activated the icloud drive yet.
You have regular albums and shared album.
As long as you do not enable iCloud Photo Library Beta, your photos are stored only on the iPad, unless you add them to a shared album.
When you create an album in the "Albums" tab, with  "tap , enter a name, then tap Save. Select photos and videos to add to the album, then tap Done", this album is local on the iPad or iPhone.
Only "Shared" albums are stored on all devices,
When you delete photos from the photo stream, the deleted photos are removed from My Photo Stream on all your devices, but the original photos remain in Photos on the device on which they were originally taken. Photos that you save to another album on a device or computer are also not deleted.

  • What's differences between camera roll and photostream?

what's differences between camera roll and photostream files?

Camera Roll is all photos & videos taken directly with the device, including screenshots, and also any images saved from a text message, email or website.
Photostream is a service that, after you've taken such a photo, after you close out the Camera app (or switch to a different app or your home screen), uploads a copy of that photo via wi-fi to your iCloud Photostream account.
Camera Roll photos are saved until you delete them.
Photostream photos will remain in Photostream for 30 days minimum.  After that, they will be automatically purged from the system.  If there are photos in your Photostream that you would like to save permanently, copy them to your iPhone's Camera Roll, or download them to your computer using the iCloud Control Panel.

  • HT203082 Why are camera roll and photostream no longer separate? It makes it take up so much room on my phone!

when ever i delete a pic from camera roll, it deletes it from photostream on my phone and computer. I just want the pic out if camera roll so it takes up less space! This is SO frustratinG.

Update to iOS 8.1 and disable iCloud Photo Library (Beta).  Then you can see the Camera Roll and the Photo Stream again separately.
As soon as you enable  iCloud Photo Library (Beta), the Camera Roll is no longer separately shown, so disable it.
Alternately, you could try to save space by using  iCloud Photo Library (Beta) Then your photos will be stored in iCloud and not in your Camera Roll. Only smaller, optimized versions will be kept on your device, if you enable "Settings > Photos & Camera > Optimize iPhone Storage.

  • Camera roll and photostream

I Have photostream switched on,on my i mac,i pad and I phone 4. Why is it then when I transfer camera images from a camera card onto my i mac they only appear in camera roll and not in photo stream?

  • Why do only 8 out of 14 photos in both camera roll and photostream transfer into iPhoto?

    Never do all photos transfer.
I can't find an answer in FAQ.

An hour-long phone discussion with Apple Support yesterday solved this question and sorted a couple of others.
As for this one, do not ignore any messages which pop up when you plug in your iPhone and ask "Trust this computer?".  The correct reply is "Yes", not "Cancel".
OK, you cancelled like I did, thinking "What on earth is this for?".  Mistake.  You can force the issue by having iTunes open when you next plug in your iPhone.  Tell the iPhone that it can trust its old friend, your computer and voila!  Your photos can download into iPhoto again.
Thank you, Jay with Apple Sydney, Australia!

  • Photo copies: camera roll and my photostream

My iPhone 5S 16GB iOS7.1 (and probably my iPad Air too) saves two copies of a photo whenever I take a picture/screenshot, one in Camera Roll, and another in My Photostream, and if it is a panorama shot it saves in Camera Roll and Panorama. Because of this, it is using twice the necessary storage just for photos. How do I prevent this from happening?

Turn off Photo Stream with your iCloud account settings on the device.
Panorama photos available in the Panorama album are not duplicated as in taking double the storage space. The photos in the Panorama album includes a pointer only to the original photo stored in the Camera Roll. This way you can quickly view all panorama photos without having to search for it among all other photos in the Camera Roll.

I change my apple ID and password like a week now and after changing all my information and MY apple ID, i noticed that i lost all my picture in my camer roll and my photo stream too ;(.. Can anyone please help me how to bring it back all my photos?

I don't know about your camera roll, but for photostream just do this:
Go into Settings > iCloud > Delete Account and then sign back in using your Apple ID information.
Make sure to do the same thing with your iTunes and App Store options.
Settings > iTunes and App Store > Click Email and sign out, then sign back in.

  • Can I delete my photos from my camera roll and they still be in my photo scream and on my computer?

Can I delete all my photos from my camera roll and still have those photos in my photo stream and on my computer? Or if I delete those photos, will they also be deleted from my photo stream and my computer?

Photos deleted out of the camera roll will not delete out of Photostream. However you want to make sure that you save your photos in your photostream somewhere before they are deleted on thier 31st day.

  • What happened to camera roll and photo stream with newest IOS upgrade?

I have upgraded my iPad 3 to the newest IOS release, but not my iPhone so far.  I noticed that Camera Roll and Photo Stream are still available on my iPhone but not on the iPad.  What happened?

the he firet versions of iOS 8 replaced the PhotoStream and Camera Roll albums with the Recently Added album. The Recently Added album contains photos for thirty days then moves them to the Photo Collections area. This definitely caught many people by surprise. Apple announced on October 16th that the next update of iOS 8 which will be 8.1 will bring back the Camera Roll. 8.1 is scheduled to be available October 20 according to Apple.

  • HT201302 How do I delete a photo from my camera roll and not delete it from a folder

When I delete photos from my camera roll, it also deletes them from the folder I've saved them in. How do I delete from the camera roll and not lose them from the folder?

"When I delete photos from my camera roll, it also deletes them from the folder I've saved them in. "
Correct.  There is only one photo and it is in the camera roll.  The folders you create are just a way to organize the pics.  it does not create a duplicate pic.
Just as a song is in your library and a playlist, a pic is in the camera roll and the folder.
If you delete a song from the library, then it is gone.  The same is true of pics.

  • Can I create a new album in the photos then delete  the photo fro the camera roll and it still stay in the album if so I do I do this?

Can I create a new album and moved the pictures out of the camera roll into it then delete the pictures from camera roll and they still be in the aalbum if so how do I do this?

    Hey Nyanza,
Clean out your Camera Roll the same way you'd clean out your still camera: sync to your computer. iTunes will move the photos to iPhoto (Mac) and give you the option of deleting them from Camera Roll. Do so. You can sync them back on once they are organized in iPhoto. Do you really need 3000 images?
If you are on a PC, it's a little more difficult as there is no photo app on the PC to make it easy. Save the pictures to My Pictures like you would your regular still camera. Organize into albums. Sync the albums back on via iTunes.
