Photoshop (all versions): Inconsistency/Bug in automatic File Naming algorithm

Hello,
I discovered this problem in PS CS3 and CS5 (don't have CS4) after a student of mine found it in PS Elements 8. Here's one way to replicate the issue:
1) Open any image in Camera Raw. Let's call that file FILENAME.dng
2) Click "Save Image" button on the left
3) "Save Options" window opens
4) Under "File Naming" there are several drop-down boxes. The first box is filled in with "Document Name" as the variable. Leave that alone and move to next box to the right.
5) In this box, select the variable named "2 Digit Serial Number."
6) Now, in that SAME box right after the word "Number," click after the "r" (at the end) and enter a hyphen "-"
7) Look above the boxes and it shows you are about to rename the file "FILENAME2 Digit Serial Number-.dng"
8) The term "2 Digit Serial Number" is now part of the file name (with a hypen at the end).
This should never happen because it's mixing variables and constants. Plus, most importantly, nobody would EVER type ANY of the drop-down values as a file name. And, if someone did type in the hyphen at the end (like my student did), she obviously intended it to be a 2 digit number followed by a hypen and not the term "2 Digital Serial Number-."
There may be other places in the software that use this file naming algorithm, too. For instance, in PS Elements 8, it cn be found also found under File>Process Multiple Files.
This isn't a big issue, I know, but it should be fixed.
I am primarily looking for a response from Adobe personnel.
Thanks,
    Mike

I did some tests and was unable to get it to work even with RAW. (perhaps it was just me) I did get it to work with multiple images being sent to "Merge to Panorama in Photoshop CS4" In all other cases, LR wants to control the naming. You end up with a file sent to PS with a LR controlled name added automatically to the LR catalog. (this is a duplicate of the orig LR file as no edits are made with this name) The file you create with your own name (when you save as from PS) needs to be imported back into the LR catalog manually later.
This is not the kind of integration we need.
We need to be able from LR to have jpg edits done in PS and named according to our needs, and re-added to the LR catalog automatically when we exit PS.
For example the following scenario:
IMG_1234.jpg is processed, cropped and tweaked in LR, then sent to PS for detailed enhancement.
Coming out of PS might be:
IMG_1234_Lucis90%
IMG_1234_Lucis50%
etc....
We need to make this work somehow....

  • PSE 8 - Inconsistency/Bug in automatic File Naming algorithm

    Hello,
I teach PSE 8 and a student found something that is confusing and should be fixed in Camera Raw and Process Multiple Files. Here's one way to replicate the issue:
    1) Open any image in Camera Raw. Let's call that file FILENAME.dng
    2) Click "Save Image..." button on the left
    3) "Save Options" window opens
    4) Under "File Naming" it has 4 drop-down boxes. The first is filled in with "Document Name." Leave that alone and move to next box to the right.
    5) In this box, select "2 Digit Serial Number."
    6) Now, in that SAME box right after the word "Number," click after the "r" (at the end) and enter a hyphen "-"
    7) Look above the boxes and it shows you are about to rename the file "FILENAME2 Digit Serial Number-.dng"
    8) The term "2 Digit Serial Number" is part of the file name. That should not happen.
This same problem appears in  FILE>Process Multiple Files. And, I just checked in Photoshop CS3 and it happens there, too. I havent' checked CS5 yet.
My student was saying to me, "Why is my file name being called Whatever2 Digit Serial Number"?
The reason this is not a good thing is because this is a beginning program and it's confusing for new users. Plus, nobody would EVER name the file with using any of the weird terms in the drop-down box.
Note: If you highlight the entire term "2 Digit Serial Number" and then enter a hyphen, it works as it should. But, you shouldn't be able to add onto the end of the term.
I am looking for a response from Adobe personnel.
    Thanks,
        Mike

Are you on Win 7? If the files in the Get Photos dialog disappear after you select them, confirm if the names of selected files/folders is shown under the File name . If yes, you can import these files by clicking Open. You should find the issue addressed in E9.

  • PhotoShop CC - Version 14.2 - Problem with File Menu

After installation of PhotoShop CC version 14.2 when I bring up the File Menu and click on "Browse in Bridge" instead of launching Bridge it launches the Creative Cloud update/install application.  Some where some parimeter file is messed up, my guess.
Anyone else seeing the same thing?

This is a stock answer, but you can hold down the Ctrl-Alt-Shift keys and start Photoshop. The reset preferences dialog will show up. You can reset Prefs and see if it fixes this.
The other is a bit more drastic,
    Uninstall Photoshop CC
Run the CC Cleaner tool  Download it from this help link, and carefully follow instructions.

    Reinstall Photoshop.

  • Automatic file naming and data saving

    Hi,
I am building a program where there will be several I-V scan for each value of temperature. I would like to make the data saving fully automatic.
    To explain in more deatils:
I want the program to generate a new file on its own , give a file name depending on the temperature variable , save the data and again go for the next I-V scan and do the same way.
So, if at a particulat temp say 300K, there are 5 iterations, my program should be such that it generates a new file evrytime say 300K_001(1st iteration), 300K_002,...300K_005(5th iteration) automatically on the hit of "run" button.
Can some one help me on how to implement such a code.
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

People do things like that all the time.
Look at the Number to String conversion functions in the String palette and the Build Path function in the File palette.
You should think about error handling. What happens if you try to create the 300K_001 file and a file with that name already exists? Do you want to over-write the file, change the name to 300K_001_a, or ask the operator for input?

  • How can I get all photos from iPhoto to automatically back up to iCloud from my Mac OSX Version 10.6.8 operating system.  Not enough memory to upgrade.

How can I get all photos from iPhoto to automatically back up to iCloud from my Mac OSX Version 10.6.8 operating system.  Not enough memory to upgrade.

You can't.  iCloud is not for general file backup from a Mac. It's for backup up and syncing data between mobile devices and and Macs and  The following is from this Apple document: iCloud: Backup and restore overview.
iCloud automatically backs up the most important data on your (mobile) device using iOS 5 or later. Once you have enabled Backup on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch .....
    What is backed up
You get unlimited free storage for:
Purchased music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books
Notes: Backup of purchased music is not available in all countries. Backups of purchased movies and TV shows are U.S. only. Previous purchases may not be restored if they are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore.
Some previously purchased movies may not be available in iTunes in the Cloud. These movies will indicate that they are not available in iTunes in the Cloud on their product details page in the iTunes Store. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they have been refunded or are no longer available in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore.
You get 5 GB of free iCloud storage for:
Photos and videos in the Camera Roll
Device settings (for example: Phone Favorites, Wallpaper, and Mail, Contacts, Calendar accounts)
    App data
    Home screen and app organization
    Messages (iMessage, SMS, and MMS)
    Ringtones
    Visual Voicemails
But not from a Mac.  If you want to backup your photos and other important files I suggest you get an external hard drive and use  it with Time Machine.

After installation of latest Bridge and Photoshop version (2014.2.2) *.CR2 files will not be displayed correctly anymore, neither in preview nor in Camera Raw dialogue.
Some pictures have white squares with blue and red diagonal stripes that cover almost the complete picture.
When opening those files I have the same problem in Camera Raw dailogue and even in Photoshop eventually.
I tried to open the same same pictures on another computer with the same version of Bridge and Photoshop but the problem remains the same.
It seems like the files itselves are still ok, because if you open an explorer window the previews of the pictures are all ok. And the pictures' sizes remain the same.
I tried to clear the cache in both programs but it didn't help.
    Has anyone an idea????

First see if a reboot of your PC helps.  If not,
    Resets may be in order:
Photoshop: Press and hold Control - Shift - Alt immediately upon cold-starting Photoshop.  If you get the keys down quickly enough - and you have to be VERY quick - it will prompt you to confirm deletion of your established preferences, which will lead to them all being set to defaults.
Bridge:  Start Adobe Bridge and immediately press Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS) until the Reset Settings dialog box appears. Select all three options--Reset Preferences, Reset Standard Workspaces, and Purge Entire Thumbnail Cache--and then click OK.
Outdated graphics drivers can also cause display problems. Go to your GPU maker's website and be sure you have the latest drivers for your card model.

Does a raw converter exist for this camera and where can I find it ?
    Thanks for any help.

You need Adobe camera raw version 8.7. Unfortunately your software pre-dates the camera. ACR 8.7 is only compatible with PSE13. But it is possible to download and install the free DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.7
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.7
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

Some of the less popular formats, such as JPEG2000 and EPS have since been dropped, but standard JPEGS, TIFFS, PSD, GIF, PNG, BMP, PDF should all open in PSE12. There is a free plug-in if you do have JPEG2000 files that you want to open.

I have several old Kodak Photo CD with PCD image files.  I am now using Photoshop CS5.  Some years ago while using Photoshop CS4 I copied a file:  "Photo CD.8BI" from an older, CS2, version to the Plug-ins/File Format folder of CS4.  This does not appear to work with CS5.  Any fix?

It can be made to work, but you have to run the 32 bit version of Photoshop CS5, and as I recall there's an additional DLL called pcdlib32.dll that's needed from the old installation.

  • The latest update to CC has caused brush lag across all versions of Photoshop.  How can I fix this?

Ever since this past week's update to CC, I have noticed a decrease in performance across all versions of Photoshop I have installed, CS6 and CC.  Many of the brushes I have, both in Photoshop's default and my own custom sets, lag horribly when drawing.  My system had not previously had this issue as far as I can tell.  Just to be safe, I have tested Photoshop on other builds, a macbook pro and a near top of the line PC.  The lag happens across all systems.  I've tried drawing with just the mouse and the Cintiq 12WX and the responsiveness is the same.
For the sake of this case, here are the specs of my main work computer.  All drivers are up to date, as is the OS:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 2.40 GHZ
    RAM: 8 GB
    Operating System: Windows 8 (64-bit)
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6700 Series
Hard Drive: Samsung 830 256 GB Solid State (where my scratch drive is)
    Monitor: 2 X Dell U2410
I have tried altering the OpenGL settings and disabling them altogether on all builds, including this one. There is no change in the lag of the brushes.
For the sake of complete clarity, these are the specs of the near top of the line PC and the Macbook, which both had the same issues:
    The PC:
Processor: Intel Core i5 3570K 3.4 GHz, overclocked to 4.4 GHz
    RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600 MHz
Operating System: Windows 8 (64 Bit)
Graphics Card: 2 X EVGA Nvidia GTX 670 4GB SLI
    Hard Drive: 2 X Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB SSD, Raid 0
    Monitor: Apple 27" Cinema Display
    Macbook Pro:
Processor: Intel Core i7 2.7 GHz
Operating System: OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion
Hard Drive: Western Digital 500GB 7200 RPM
    Graphics: Nvidia Geforce 630M
I've also tried completely uninstalling and re-installing Photoshop CS5 and CC on my work computer, which still did not solve the issue.
I am a freelance artist and this sudden lack of performance is putting a cramp in my deadlines and possibly in my income stream, if I cannot solve this issue quickly.  Please advise!

I have some new info on the issueI thought I'd share with you.
First of all, I've installed Photoshop CC on my SurfacePro (Windows 8) and do not have the lag issue there. It's very similar hardware to my MacBook Pro. So the issue must have something to do with my MacBook.
After a lot of tinkering I discovered that it is my 27" Thunderbolt Display that is causing the brush lag. When I unplug it and only use my built in 13" screen the brush lag is gone. Aha!
I tried every available option in the Performance section but nothing helped. Again, Photoshop CS5 with attached Thunderbolt Display doesn't have a brush lag issue.
I'd be interested to know everyone else's setup who is experiencing this problem.

  • Importing MVK files into Premiere Pro (all versions)

    Dear folks,
I see the old topic was locked (probably because it got WAY out of hand, OT and flameworthy) and I have no interest in adding fuel to the fire but I do want to bring light and a solution that I've been using for a while with great success (I thought I'd share here because I was asked by someone on another forum who directed me to the old thread here when I answered them).
(And while I do NOT want to inflame anyone, let's just say that even us retired pros run into a need to edit MKV files from time to time and while I don't think Adobe needs to add this import format I do think people should know how to do it).  In my own case our animated television series is produced in an electronic distribution format (we're bypassing media entirely) and MKV works best for the folks who play our stuff.  But rather than have to re-render our older stuff when we want to do a bottle show, or other such reuse (like "Previously on..."), I find it's just easier to take the completed shows (in MKV format) and use them in PP (6.0 at the moment but this works in all versions).
The answer is actually IN that old thread, albeit fairly buried -- you just need to demux the MKV container and then remux again in a TS one.  There are two pretty great freeware programs that can do this -- MKVExtract (for the demuxing) and tsMuxer (for the muxing).  They are virus and adware free, have been around for years, and can be gotten from reliable places (avoid the disreputable ones, though -- they should be ZIP not EXE files).
MKVExtract is part of the larger MKVToolset and you'll need the whole thing to get the GUI part of it (it's actually MKVExtractGUI that runs the executable).  MKVMerge is also part of that toolset in case you want to create MKV files, as we do, from almost anything.  tsMuxer can create MT2S files as tell as TS, and it can also demux a variety of formats (not MKV though, or you could use it alone).
Because we're just muxing and remuxing there is no additional codec loss -- naturally that's the biggest consideration when trying to re-edit stuff like this.  For the highest quality, of course, you always want to remain with original source when you can (although I actually like some of the artifacts that get introduced sometimes -- I often think that maybe the biggest issue with going completely digital is the lack of, well, old timeyness.  Then again, I'm an old guy myself).

Good points.  I actually have two NAS that i sync that are in remote locations. I am an advocate, and have to keep reminding people that RAID systems are for redundancy and offer *zero* backup of any sort...
They are each 4 bay with 12TB of space, and I am running out very rapidly... but yes, dirt cheap relatively.
I just don't like having two versions of a file... it's messy.  I'm not OCD, but I have been through this...
I actually do this for music.  I have a flac file for my squeezebox network, and mp3 files for mp3 players.
keeping them both up to date, ripping twice, explaining to the wife how to add her latest CD to both, and then how to copy to her MP3 player... i just don't want to go there again
As I create temporary folders for projects, and mkv -> TS is lossless, I think i will use tsMuxer to decode, use premier, then delete all files once I am finished...
This is all complicated by MOV files that are invalid, MOD files from my JVC, and two types of MP4 from another camera, and our phones, so I want to drop files in a folder, have them processed, and be done with it.  then use those files for editing where I choose to.
    sorry to Hijack your thread!
BTW: tsMuxer, I checked the audio / video sync and seems perfect from watching lips moving.  I have experienced problems before with AVS, freemake and others, so tsMuxer may work well on it's own for me!
    Thanks again!
