Photoshop CC on Win 7! Drop shadow on shape stays after removed

I started to notice this a few days ago. I created a rectangular shape and applied the drop shadow layer style. I then removed that style first by turning it off and then by dragging it to the trash icon.
Now I have a shape with a drop shadow but not layer styles. The only solution I have found is to delete the shape and create a new one without the drop shadow applied.
Seems like a major bug to me.

Do you have photoshop cc 14.1.2?
(Help>System Info)
Resetting the photoshop preferences might clear things up if your updated to version 14.1.2
Hold down the Shift+Alt+Ctrl keys just after starting the launch of photoshop cc and keep holding the keys down until you get
a dialog asking if you want to Delete the photoshop settings file.
Press Yes because you do.

  • Photoshop Elements 7:  Newbie Needs Drop Shadow Help, Please

    Hello.
I'm brand new to Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 and need help with the Drop Shadow feature, please.
I've read the documentation, but it's not crystal clear to me, so maybe someone can guide me through it.
I want to create text on a blank white canvas, and add a little bit of drop shadow to it. That's all I want to do--plain and simple.
I can create the text, but I can't for the life of me find any drop shadow options.
The documentation I'm using is the on-line, web-based help. I type in Drop Shadow in Search, and select Add Text to a Slide.
The third step says, "In the Properties palette, set any of the following options" and then offers some options, including Drop Shadow and Drop Shadow Color.
I'll be darned if I can locate the Properties palette. Obviously, I'm not well-versed with Photoshop, so if anyone can just steer me towards this feature, I'll take things from there.
I know this is probably rock-bottom basic, but I'm stumped. Thank you!
    J. Danniel

I need a lot more help with this than I thought.
The problem I'm having is this: After creating the drop shadow effect, when I try to save the image as a transparent GIF, it quite simply.... looks horrible.
Here is what I'm doing in detail:
    1. New/Blank File.
    2. Blank File is set to transparent. (Is this the right way to make a transparent GIF?)
    3. Creating text.
    4. Cropping text.
    5. Selecting drop shadow effect.
Now, here's where I get confused. Do I just select File/Save As, or File/Save For Web?
When I just use File/Save As, and select the GIF format, the drop shadow effect in the final file looks horrible when I embed the image into a web page. The text looks good, and the file is transparent, but the effect is ugly.
When I try to use Save for Web, there is a Before/After screen. The Before side looks decent; the After screen looks horrible, too.
So, now I don't know what to do. Can you or anyone guide me through this a bit further, please? Thank you! Jd

I've got a vector image that I've applied a drop shadow to,
I've then used a mask on it to square it off but unfortunately the

Is there any way the mask can cut off the the drop shadow

  • Question about drop shadow...

    Hi,
I need the drop shadow to still be visible around a cut out box shape.
Can anyone tell me how to achieve this effect? (Please see attached picture).
It may involve a compound clipping path but I'm not sure...
I would need detailed step by step instructions (especially because I don't even know what a compound clipping path is, or if i need one for this effect).
    Thanks, in advance!

I assume you are trying to create a placeholder image with a pre-assigned drop shadow.  I would create a shape and apply your drop shadow effects>stylize>drop shadow.
With the shape still selected, press shift+D twice or look at the bottom of your tools panel and change to the draw inside mode.  Place your image in that.
If that is not the effect you are looking for then you can create a faux drop shadow by doing the following:
    1. Create a box and fill it with your shadow color.
    2. With the box selected go to effects>blur>gaussian blur to create the drop shadow effect your want.
    3. Duplicate that same shape and place it above the first one, but slightly adjusted to recreate the drop shadow offset.
    5. Remove the blur effect in your appearance panel of the top object.
    4. Select both objects and in your pathfinder panel select the "minus front" button.
You should have a blurred backwards L shape.

  • When I go to do a drop shadow, photoshop cc takes 17 seconds to pull up the window

I just got Photoshop CC a few weeks ago.  It seems to be very slow, and I'm using a super fast computer with 32Gig of RAM, i7 Processor, SSD, etc...
Photoshop in particular, is REALLY slow.  For instance, when I go to Layer, Layer Style, Drop Shadow, it takes about 17 seconds before the window will pop up for me to make adjustments on a drop shadow.  If I click cancel on that, it takes about 2-3 seconds for the window to go away.
Lots of other slow things in photoshop too.  Scratch disks are on a SSD.  Performance is set to give Photoshop 80% of my RAM.
Anyone have any clues or ideas to help?

I have this same problem. It doesn't take quite as long, about 6 seconds to open the Layer Styles dialog, but still, way too long for such a powerful computer (I have pretty much the same specs as your). My Surface Pro 3 i5 runs Photoshop faster than my i7-5820k with a GTX970.
Did you ever get the issue resolved?

  • Help! Can't figure out how to copy and paste a drop shadow behind an image in photoshop

I use illustrator most of the time. I'm designing a brochure and I've always embedded images, but now I'm trying to it correctly by linking them instead. So I have an image in ps as a tiff. I created a drop shadow for the image in illustrator. I want to copy and paste it behind the image into the same file so both are one file linked to the brochure. Also the drop shadow pastes as too small, then i also can't get it positioned right etc. Please explain how to do this step by step. I've been trying for hours to figure it out. thanks!

What happened is this: my client emailed me the image as a jpg. I downloaded it, then right clicked "open with" - photoshop. It opened in photoshop. Then I saved it as a tif. (maybe i didn't need to do this). Then still in psd i went to image size - and made the image 6x4 inches (the image is supposed to be printed 3x2 inches on the brochure) . Then I made it 300 dpi resolution and kept the resampling box checked. Then I went to layer styles; drop shadow; and used the drop shadow  menu to get it the size and placement and opacity i desired .It's just a  plain rectangular drop shadow which is a little offset behind the plain  rectangular photo. I did check the box where the image would drop out  the drop shadow (or whatever it said:). The drop shadow is on the same layer as the image. Then behind all of it is a larger rectangle of the grey and white boxes, which show thru thru the drop shadow in psd. I'm assuming this is simply the artboard. Then i named it and saved it into a "links" folder which i plan to include in the folder containing the illy brochure file.
Since the psd image is 6x4 inches, will it reset to 3x2 when printed to match the placed image size? Or should I size the psd image exactly like the illy placed image? Is the drop shadow in this case a blend like you were describing earlier?
Did i do anything wrong in the process which will make the brochure print incorrectly, or am i being too confusing for you to know ? ))
I'm so nervous about how it all translates from one to the other. Thanks in advance!

  • DROP SHADOW: Photoshop Elements

Does Adobe Photoshop Elements provide "drop shadow" for version 6, on Mac?
If so, how it is applied, please?

    Hi Dave
It’s best to start with a white background so that your shadow will show up best.
    1. From The editor menu click File >> New >> Blank File
    2. Set any dimensions of your choice and select whit for background color and click OK
    3. Click File >> Place and navigate to your photo; select it and click the place button
    4. Hold down shift and drag the image coroners to get the size you need on the white background and click the green checkmark.
    5. Make sure your placed layer is highlighted in the layers pallet (it’s usually the top layer)
    6. Go to the effects pallet and choose the layer styles tab (second from left with a symbol of two overlapping documents)
    7. From the dropdown menu choose drop shadow and then select one of the thumbnails and click the apply button
8 A fx symbol will be added to the layer - you can double click the fx symbol to make adjustments
    9. Use the sliders to increase distance or position of your drop shadow - you can also change the lighting angle.
After adding text with the T tool - You can add a drop shadow around all the letters using the same method and also to an outer frame.

  • How do I achieve this type of extreme subtle drop shadow using Photoshop?

I cannot for the life of me recreate this effect and it's driving me insane.
http://justpuretaste.com/ - the header logo where it says "Just Pure Taste" as well as the "We are Taste Architects" as well as the "Experts in Food & Beverage" appear to have some sort of drop shadow applied to it.  This was not done using CSS since this is an actual background image.  I would love to know how to create this effect on a consistent basis.
I haved played around with the settings for drop shadow and using opacity: 100, 70, 50, 20, along with distance set to 1, and spread/size set to 0, I still cannot get what I want.
If anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it.  If no one here can, could you guys please point me in the right direction like another forum or something.  Thank you!

You see, sometimes I see that and other times I don't.  I'm not sure if the text being over a really subtle gradient causes the eyes to see things, kind of like an optical illusion you know?  But it just seems to be a very common design practice, especially the stuff I'm finding over at dribbble.  I've also tried the 1-2 px distance with a 90 degree angle but my stuff never looks the same.  I'm just unsure if I'm not doing something or this is some kind of trade secret that designers use and don't wish to divulge.

  • Photoshop import: losing drop shadow

    hello
I have a layered psd, and the topmost group has a dropshadow applied. I've imported this file into AE and the drop shadow is disappearing every time--I've tried the various methods as well, i.e. composition, footage, merged layers...
    I'm using CS6
    any ideas?
    thanks very much,
    ML

is that to say it's not supported? or is it to say rather, "ugh, importing
psd's, I'm always having to find workarounds"
    thanks

  • Drop shadow effects have changed

A strange occurrence.  In  Editor, PSE 8, Effects - Drop Shadow - the icons have for some odd reason suddenly reduced from 8 to 5, including the 'High' drop shadow which I use all of the time.  Do you know why this would have happened, and how I can rectify?  Thanks

If you deleted it whilst you were in the styles palette then this should work to recover it:
    Rename the Mediadatabase.db3 to MediadatabaseOLD.db3
    It is located at C: Documents & Setting\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale\ en-US - for XP
    or
    C:Program Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale\ en-US - for Vista and Win 7
and then restart Elements ... the Mediadatabase.db3 will rebuild but you may have to wait a while for it to do so.
It just makes Elements rebuild its database and hopefully your styles will then be back. Once it has rebuilt then you can delete the MediadatabaseOLD .db3 file.
    Hope that helps...

  • Muse: Issue: Text Effects options (Drop Shadow, etc) are always disabled.

    Hello,
I am a new Muse user and I have been using the Learn Tutorials here on helpx.adobe.com to teach myself Muse.
I have a strange problem. When following through the "Apply Effects to Text" tutorial at: Adding effects to text | Adobe Muse CC tutorials, the options to add a drop shadow are not enabled. On advice from folks on Twitter, I tried the same using System Fonts, Web Fonts and Web Safe fonts. None of them seem to work.
I am attaching a video capture of the issue.
    Please help :-(

That's worse. If I set Stroke to 1 (you can only do that on the Text Frame and not the text itself), then the Text Effects do get enabled. BUT, the effect is applied to the entire text frame instead of just the text. See this:
I want the drop shadow for the text not the frame (like how Photoshop does it).

  • I can't tell if my previous messages came thru, but I need help with PSE 7.0. I can't use my drop shadow brush set anymore.

I am not sure if any of my previous messages went thru or not, but I have Photoshop Elements 7.0. I learned how to open a blank file and use a textbox to make my watermark and also my copyright logo and save them each as a brush. They were saved in the Drop Shadow Brushes. When I used my cloning stamp yesterday, I switched brushes to basic. When I later attempted to go back into the drop shadow brush set where I had saved the watermark and copyright logo, a message came up telling me the file couldnot be opened because it wasnot compatible with this version of Photoshop. I presume it is because of the special brushes saved there. What do I do now?

  • Using Bridge to Camera Raw to Open Image button also drop shadow problems

I remember when I was working with RAW in PSE 8. I would be in Bridge looking at a pic and double click on it. PSE 8 would open in Camera RAW and I could play with the pic a bit, make some adjustments, then click on OPEN IMAGE. When I did that it would open in PSE and it would be in jpg format. With this PSE 9 and the updated Camera RAW 6.3, when I punch OPEN IMAGE I still have a picture labeled .CR2 which I think still means RAW. When I double click in Bridge the .CR2 pic shows as 8 bit depth. I can do a little more work on it and use SAVE AS. When I do that, the sample file name that shows is still in .CR2 format and I must change that to .jpg and then below change from PHOTOSHOP to JPEG to save my file as a jpg file. Is there something that I have to change in preferences to get it to open the image in jpg format when I hit the OPEN IMAGE button? Or, is this an "improvement" with RAW 6.3? Also, I seem to be having trouble adding a drop shadow (or any other effects) on jpeg pics. At least it doesn't show up on the screen after I apply it. I just recently updated to Camera RAW 6.3 and updated my Operating system on my iMac computer to OS 10.6.6. I emailed this request to my good friend with an identical setup on his iMac and he is having the same response when performing the above operations. Any ideas what the problem might be?

Okay, previously you seem to have been using the bridge version of camera raw to edit your raw photos. That has many more options than the PSE version of the raw converter. (If you still have PSE 8, you can see the difference by using File>Open in the editor to open a raw photo for the PSE version of ACR, which works the same way in PSE 9.) In PSE's raw converter, you use the Open button, then save your photo in an image format in the editor. The Save button in ACR in PSE is only the DNG converter.
Layer styles should work exactly the same way as in PSE 8. However, in any version of PSE a drop shadow, like a real shadow, needs someplace to fall, so unless there is empty space on the layer, it won't appear. Try creating text or drawing and simplifying a shape and adding a drop shadow. Does it appear then?
Also remember that Jpegs won't let you save either layers or transparency when you resave the file.

  • Illustrator CC Drop Shadow Issue

Since upgrading to Illustrator CC, I am having random issues with drop shadows. It doesn't matter if the shadow is applied to a basic vector graphic per screenshot attached, or to a placed transparent image, and it can be on complex shapes or very simple shapes. I get these odd straight lines running through the shadow. It is just a CMYK file (no spot colour), set up for print, document raster effects resolution set to 300ppi. I have tried fiddling with the drop shadow settings, if I move the x and y settings it just moves the line. If I keep the x and y distance the same but remove the blur value, the line disappears (see screenshot without blur). It is not related to transparency, because even if I flatten the image and expand the shadow, it is still there.

Dhirendra Mohan, thanks but it happens on all different shapes and sizes, irrelevant of stroke being added or not, but it is definitely linked to high resolution, larger files.
Raymarcher, I reckon you've nailed it. I did not have this problem with CS5 on the same size files but updating to CC has caused a lot of performance issues on my Mac. Photoshop CC has already told me to update my video card. I'm running:
    iMac 24" 2009 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4gb 1067 MHz DDR3
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 256MB
    Running OS X 10.8.5
Waiting on the next release of iMac before buying. Will just have to adjust the raster effects resolution in the meantime and will certainly try switching off other applications when working on large files and see if that works. Have never used SVG drop shadow but will read up thanks.
So problem not totally solved, clarification from Adobe that this would be the cause would be great, before I buy a new iMac please.
    Cheers,
    Julie

I have two layers, one for a background image linked to a photoshop document and another layer for text. When i add drop shadow to the text, the background colour goes sort of dark, and the same happens in overprint view whereas with 5.5 it didn't do that. Is there a way to fix this?
