Photoshop CS3 batch exporting

Hello,
I have 1 big PSD which has many groups and nested groups which contain layers. I want to export all individual layers in the PSD to transparent PNGs WHILE also preserving the group structure within the PSD. So the result should be that when I look at the export folder I find that my PNG files are nested in folders exactly the same as how my layers are nested the group structure.
I know there are third party export scripts for exporting PNG files in CS3 but I'm not sure how to preserve the folder structure.
Anyone know how to do this would be really helping me out!
Thanks.

With ai files you could record your open step as Open As>GenericEPS.
Then try the settings in the batch as below.
For pdf files it's more complex.
One way is to use the Scripts>Image Processor and set your open options for pdf's
by opening a pdf, setting the options in the dialog and click ok to open. Close that image.
When you process your pdf's with the image processor,
you don't need any open steps in your action because the image processor
should use the last settings used in the open pdf dialog.
A couple of drawbacksof the image processor:
1. If you want to change the open settings for pdfs,
you have to repeat opening another pdf to set the settings.
2. If you want to save in a format other than the three in processor dialog,
with the file naming different for each file, that could be a problem.
A better solution for pdfs might be the PDF Processor, which you get here:

  • Photoshop CS3 Batch fails to rename - saves as original name for every file?

I have created the following action:
Open (File from folder on desktop - original is JPG)
Image Size (resize image to 1024xXXX)
    Save (Save as PNG)
    Close
I run the action via Batch:
    Default Actions
    PNG 1024xXXX (action created above)
    Source folder on desktop
    Destination: Folder under root C:
File Naming: yymmdd (date + Document Name + extension
    Starting serial#: 1
    Errors: Stop for Errors
When I run the batch, I get one file in the output folder named after the original file used to create the Action. All subsequent files that are opened to be processed do not get saved as reduced PNG files in the output folder.
The following is a screenshot of the batch as it is running:
    http://www.mpecsinc.ca/images/08-02-20PhotoshopBatch.jpg
The image in the top left corner is the original image that was used to create the action. It was closed after it was processed and the output file was created.
The file at the bottom right is the second file that was opened to be processed.
But, for some reason, the original file keeps showing up after each subsequent file is opened for processing! It is the only file that is saved to the output folder.
I hope I am explaining myself well enough. This is very frustrating as I have tried all manner of action combinations along with batch combinations and keep coming up with the same or similar results.
    Thanks for any help.

Boy, do I feel like an idiot . . . I was trying to run this script from Bridge (batch action-select images from Bridge) . . . If I just run the batch action in Photoshop CS3 only. . . everything works great . . .
Many Thanks for all the help!!!

  • Photoshop CS3 Batch Action Delimma

I've run into a problem recently with batching actions in CS3 to process vector files like ai or pdf.  I record the open step to set import preferences then select override action "open" commands, but the program opens the image with the name of the file used to record the action instead of taking the name of the file being processed. The result is that the new files all have the same name and just keep overwriting the last one. I'm not touching the file name when I record the action. The only way I've been able to get around this is to manually open the files, then run the rest of the action. I know in the past, recording an open step with overide action open commands has worked to batch these types of files. Is there a way to set the import preferences while keeping the source file's name when batching?

With ai files you could record your open step as Open As>GenericEPS.

  • Photoshop CS3 Actions Batch mode bug?

I posted this in the Mac forum but received no responses after a couple of days, so I am trying it here.
Photoshop CS3 Actions seem to have a bug such that when used in Automate > Batch mode it will use the name of the first file opened in the batch session for every file processed in that session. Since that name is used in Save step, this means having to deal with the "File Already Exist" dialog for every file in the batch because it is attempting to save at the designated location with the same file name. If the continue option is chosen each time, the final result is one file with the first opened file name, but with the contents of the last processed file.
To confirm that this is a problem particular to the opening step, I have disabled all processing steps as well as the saving step by toggling them in the Actions panel. I then ran the action in batch mode on a folder containing 4 files. This resulted in 4 opened files all with the same name but different image content.
This was with the "Override 'Open' Action Commands" checked/not checked, and the "Suppress File Open Options Dialogs"  checked/not checked. The  problem described also occurs when using a Droplet.
By comparison, Photoshop CS exhibits the expected behavior: when an action is used in batch mode to process an entire folder of files, the name of each file is retained after opening and used after processing in the save or export step.
The above described behavior of CS3 is a change acquired along the way to the CS3 version (I do not have the CS2 version to test). But more importantly, can someone please report if the CS4 version behaves as I described for CS3, or if it has been returned to the CS behavior?
    OS X 10.4.11
    G4 800 MHz 2 MB L3/processor 1.25 GB SDRAM
    Is this a known bug?

    Hello Miguel,
I was going to come back to post some of my findings, one of which relates to your staement:
"- The open command created by Photoshop 6 doesn't keep the file's name, it is a much simple open command, and so it opens the file with the own file's name."
In my case I found that my CS version of the "same" action worked, while the  CS3 version failed, precisely because the earlier one records less detail for the open step.
My need is to convert dozens of Quark pdf files to GIF and JPEG files for the web. What I found after several days of testing is that it is best to record the opening step in CS3 NOT using a pdf file, so that the "Open As Generic Pdf with 'Name____' " would not be coded into the opening step. Instead I recorded the whole action using a PSD file. Then I can proceed to run it in Batch mode choosing a folder of Quark pdf files as the source location with "Override 'Open' Action Commands" checked, and the "Suppress File Open Options Dialogs"  checked, and it opens all the pdf files just fine in some background process, not getting stuck in the details of the file name, and proceeds to cary out the flattening, saving, and closing steps to my chosen target location and uses the finder file name of each pdf files in the source folder to save a filename.ext in the Target folder.
Contrary to what I stated in my original post, "Override 'Open' Action Commands" checked/not checked does indeed make a difference. If it is not checked, the files do open in batch mode, but the other steps are not performed. There is much more about this that I would like to know, and this may not be a general solution for all types of files that a user may wish to process in batch mode, but it works for my case. The main trick is to use as simple an opening step as possible when recording the action, and then letting Photoshop use whatever background process it requires to open a particular file type. I tested this by manually saving a pdf file to each of the twenty some odd formats available in the save as dialog to a Source folder, and then proceeded to batch process that folder with the action described above, and it worked for all except one.
So while there may not be a bug involved in this problem, there certainly is a lack of documentation about how the "improvements" in the opening step in newer versions of Photoshop affect using Actions in Batch mode.
Please comment if you can further explain any of the reported results. In particular, what is the situation in CS4?
    Thanks,
    Al

  • Batch change jp2 files to Photoshop (CS3)

I found a website that allows you to download old (public domain) books. Each page is saved as a jp2, which I can't open in Photoshop CS3. I found an plugin that enables me to open them, and I could have sworn it was working, but it suddently stopped working for some reason.
Anyway, I have a folder full of folders with over a thousand jp2 images. I can open them in Pixelmator and save them as Photoshop files, but that's very time consuming. So, can anyone tell me if there's a way to do a batch change - convert every jp2 image in the folder to a format that I can open in Photoshop CS3?
Also, can anyone recommend an online guide to batch changing. I'd like to learn how to batch change file sizes; for example convert all images that are 4,000 pixels wide to 500 pixels wide. I'd also like to learn how to batch change file names. I probably have to pursue each of these separately, but I just wondered if there's some sort of online central guide to batch changing.
    Thanks.

".jp2" is just the file extension for JPEG 2000, which a number of applications can open, including your Photoshop CS3, Photoshop 13 ("CS6"), Apple Preview, GraphicConverter, Safari, Firefox, etc..  Just install the JPEG2000.plugin from the Optional Plug-Ins folder in your CS3.

  • Exporting from Aperture to Photoshop CS3- file format

If I have my files in raw CR2 format in Aperture 2.1 and I then go to the edit the image in photoshop CS3 will it remain in the raw CR2 format or does it convert it to a tiff file automatically?
Currently I have PS CS2 and it converts to a tiff file when I go edit in photoshop however I thought this may be beacuse PS CS2 does not support raw files from my Canon 40D, PS CS3 does though.
Incidently the same thing happens when I use the dodge and burn tool in Aperture 2, it conversts to Tiff format.

"Will there ever" is a loaded question Apple rarely comments on future product releases, and anyone that would know wouldn't be able to comment.
So it's not possible to say if future dodge & burn (or other plugins) can work without rendering a TIFF file.
As far as "multiple file formats" though -- it shouldn't really be something you need to worry about (other than the fact that the TIFF takes up some disk space). You can export to JPEG from the original or the version, and Aperture will track the files together.

  • PhotoShop CS3 Transparent Image Export

In Adobe PhotoShop CS3 Windows version where is the "export as transparent image" feature which was there in the Help Menu earlier? Or is there some other of achieving the same result?

    That's baloney, Ed, "IMHO."
Most of us don't fully understand how Photoshop goes about applying JPEG compression algorithms. By your reasoning it would be "improper" for us to save files as JPEGs. I'm just glad that this functionality is built in so that I easily take advantage of the functionality.
Of course there's added value in knowing how to save an image in the format best suited to one's purpose. But the people who miss the wizard are just looking for functionality that has suited them well in the past. What authority do you have to deem this "improper"?

  • Photoshop CS3 export to Flash CS3

I have checked the adobe site, and the lynda.com site and
still can't find a way to export from Photoshop CS3 to Flash CS3 so
that all of the layers are imported into flash on individual
layers. I have found how to do it with CS2 using imageready but
that is no longer an option in CS3. Can anyone help? I have a flash
project on hold because of this one.
    Thank you...

I have tried saving the file from Photoshop CS3 as a PSD and
then importing it into Flash CS3. You get all the layers but not
the drop shadows. The drop shadows are there but as a part of what
ever they are shadowing, they are not a separate layer. Also using
CS2 and Imageready I could get the layers to be named the same as
my file name automatically so each layer would end up with a unique
name instead of layer1 and layer2. Is there still a way to do it
the way we used to or something similar so that everything is on
its own layer including drop shadows and the layers in flash are
automatically named for you on import?

    > but the part about DNG has convinced me to dive deeper in it and give it a go
When working in a Bridge/Camera Raw/Photoshop workflow, I tend to ingest the actual native raw files, do initial selects and gross edits and basic metadata work via templates and THEN do the conversion to DNG. I'll use the DNG as my working files and the original raws as an archive. I tend to do this more with studio shoots. I tend to use Lightroom when I'm on the road.
When working in Lightroom first, I tend to ingest and convert to DNG upon ingestion (when in the road working on a laptop) while using the backup copyusually working on a pair of external FW drives one for working DNG files and 1 for BU of the original raws. Then, when I get back to the studio I make sure I write to XMP and export the new shoot as a catalog and import into my studio copy of Lightroom. Then I'll also cache the newly imported images in Bridge as well so I can get at the image either in Bridge or Lightroom.
It's a bit of a chore now since I do work in Camera Raw a lot (well, DOH, I had to to do the book!) but I also keep all my digital files in a Lightroom catalog which is now up to about 74K...
Then, depending on what I'll need to do, I'll either work out of LR or Bridge/Camera Raw...
If I'm doing a high-end final print, I generally process out of Camera Raw as a Smart Object and stack multiple layers of CR processed images...if I'm working on a batch of images I'll work out of Lightroom since the workflow seems to suit me better.
In either event, I've found DNG to be better than native raws with sidecar files.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 Image Processor not converting files to sRGB Profile

I have been experiencing a problem with Photoshop CS3 Image Processor no longer converting profiles to sRGB.   It converts all of the files from Camera Raw to JPEG, but not sRGB as well.  I used to be able to batch convert an entire folder of RAW images to JPEG, sRGB through the Image Processor.
My Photoshop CS3 Working Space is Adobe RGB (1998).  I need to convert an entire folder of images selected in Bridge to sRGB working space in order to publish a photo album from one of the on-line publishing companies.  I can open each individual Camera Raw file in Photoshop and convert each to JPEG, sRGB, but this takes a tremendous amount of time.
The following procedure has worked for me in the past, but for some reason no longer works:
I select the images in the desired Bridge CS3 folder.  Upper tool bar, "Tools" > "Photoshop" > "Image Processor".  In Image Processor:
Section 1 - ""Process files from Bridge only (11)"  Whether or not I place a checkmark by "Open first image to apply settings", it makes no difference in the outcome.
Section 2:  "Save in same location"
Section 3 - "Checkmark by "Save as JPEG, quality 12".  Also a checkmark by "Convert Profile to sRGB"
Section 4 - Checkmark by "Include ICC Profile"
I replaced my iMac one month ago and reinstalled Photoshop CS3, but this Image Processor problem had been occurring even with my old computer.
Not sure if you need this information:
I'm currently on Mac OS X Version 10.6.4
Processor:  2.93 Ghz Intel Core i7
    Memory:  8 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3
I don't know if it's related,  Photoshop CS3 on my old computer was running in Rosetta.  I don't know if it's running in Rosetta now, the name does not appear when Photoshop boots up.  How do I get it to run in Rosetta again?

Heh heh heh.  It's always true that we find the answer just after making public our problems, which in turn we did after trying to find the problems ourselves for hours.
Thanks for following up with the answer.

  • IPhoto and Photoshop CS3 Problem

I have been downloading my pictures into iPhoto and editing them in Photoshop(CS3) now. As long as I was shooting jpeg, I would just hit Save in Photoshop and the edited picture would show up in my iPhoto application, in in "modified" in iPhoto library.
Since I got Photoshop CS3, I have been shooting a lot more RAW. RAW images, saved TIFFS, don't seem to get saved to iPhoto application, just the Pictures/iPhoto Library folder. And I am noticing that edited pictures don't automatically go into modified, but stay in the originals file.
I am also noticing that even jpegs do not automatically get saved to the iPhoto application. They too open up the save to window for Pictures/iPhoto Library. All this since CS3.
So only the original files downloaded from my CF card are in iPhoto. I feel that something is wrong here. I should be able to have my edited files show up in my iPhoto application without re-importing them.
I tried a trial of Aperture, but my DT graphics card and processor can't handle the application. But that is not the point. What has happened that iPhoto has become essentially useless to view my modified photos?

    Birgit
This may be the source of the issue.
Bridge is NOT Photoshop, but an alternative file organiser. So when you set Bridge as an external editor you're really sending the pics to another organiser, not an editor. Presumably from there they go to Photoshop and are then saved back... to Bridge, not iPhoto.
Try setting PS as the editor not Bridge and see does that make a difference,
Also, when you send pics to an external editor, only a maximum of 4 will go. So you can only work in batches of four.

  • Clipping in Photoshop CS3 rendered Differently in Lightroom 1.4.1

I called Adobe Tech Support in an attempt to get an answer to my question about why Lightroom (version 1.4.1) seems to show more clipping of an image than viewing clipping of the same image in Photoshop CS3 by using a curves adjustment (show clipping box checked). They did not give me a reasonable answer.
I typically import my images into Lightroom, then make adjustments there, export to CS3 as 16-bit tiffs in ProPhoto RGB Colorspace, then make further color and contrast adjustments in Photoshop. My monitor is calibrated using a Colorvision Spyder2. Color management settings in Photoshop are as follows: ProPhoto RGB Colorspace, US Web Coated (SWOP) v 2, Gray Dot Gain 20%, Spot Dot Gain 20%, Color Management Policies are to preserve embedded profiles for RGB, CMYK, and Gray, profile mismatches are to ask when opening and when pasting, and to ask when opening images with missing profiles; Conversion options are Engine Adobe (ACE), Intent Relative Colormetric, Use Black Point Compensation checked, Use Dither (8-bit/channel images). There are no items checked under advanced controls.
I view proof setup using the same paper profile in CS3 and the print module of Lightroom (perceptual intent, black point compensation checked, simulate paper color and simulate black ink options are unchecked unless being viewed full screen) Sometimes I also use the rendering intent of relative colormetric with black point compensation checked. I am seeing evidence of more clipping almost always in Lightroom (Develop and Library Modules both) than in Photoshop CS3. I understand that the Library Module uses Adobe RGB colorspace rather than ProPhoto, but I still see more clipping in the Develop Module view of the same tiff than its clipping representation in Photoshop CS3. There is a substantial difference (not a small one) in the amount of clipping shown.
I understand that Lightroom Develop Module is using a Perceptual intent and that the default option in Photoshop is absolute colormetric, but I still do not think this completely explains the problem, especially since I have the soft proofing set up to use perceptual intent most often. By the way, I never check the box for preserve RGB numbers.
Can anyone explain why the difference in clipping shown and which one should be taken as more accurate: Lightroom clipping rendering or Photoshop CS3 clipping rendering?
Please note that I ultimately export the final images as jpegs (8-bit) in srgb colorspace before posting on the web. These photos are ultimately ordered from an online printer (usually from Mpix).
Thanks for any help you can give me. Best wishes.
    Bob

    Hi,
Thanks for your responses. In answer to Jao's questions:
Yes, I turn on the clipping warnings in Lighroom (shortcut j). I am viewing a 16-bit tiff in ProPhoto RGB (that has made the "round trip" from Lightroom to Photoshop CS3 and back again to Lightroom) in Lightroom using the clipping warnings. The clipping shown in CS3 using the adjustment, curves, show clippings are much less than what is shown using the clipping warnings of the same 16-bit tiff in Lightroom.
My workflow is to import Canon Raw (using sRGB, rather than Adobe RGB) into Lightroom. Make color, sharpening, tone, ect. adjustments in Lightroom, then export to Photoshop CS3 as a 16-bit tiff in ProPhoto RGB colorspace. I make additional adjustments to color, tone, skin tones, noise, touchup, sharpening, ect. and then save the file. It reappears again in Lightroom. When I have the clipping warnings on (shortcut j), this tiff appears to have considerably more clipping than on a curves layer showing clipping in Photoshop. Ultimately, I then export these same photos as jpeg (8-bit)in srgb and post to the web where they can be ordered from an online printing service such as Mpix.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

I've run into this problem a couple times. If windows cannot find your default printer, photoshop crashes when you try and open more than one document at a time.
I have no idea why this would be related, but it is. As the previous poster mentioned, set your printer to a post script, or just change your default printer to one that is working/connected.
    Hope that helps!

I am having some problems with the appearance of files developed in adobe lightroom 1.1 or in adobe camera raw 4.1 from e.g. bridge or photoshop cs3. When developing in lightroom the images look great, however when using acr 4.1 and the same xmp sidecar settings imported from lightroom, the image in acr looks very pale in comparison. For example when using the export into photoshop option in Lightroom, the image in PS3 looks very pale to the one in lightroom. The same problem persists with developing using ACR 4.1 from bridge. I have turned autotoning in ACR off. Also in the color management of PS CS3, the desaturate checkbox is UNchecked.
I am using an icc profile for my 30" cinema display, calibrated with colory eyes pro and a spyder2.
Has anybody had similar problems with ACR 4.1 or am I just doing something horribly simple wrong?
    Thanks for your help!
    Immanuel

    Thomas,
thanks for your reply. In Mac OS X Preview the images look all good and very much like what I see in Lightroom. In any case not as pale or like with a slight white overcast to what I see when using ACR 4.1 from Bridge or Photoshop CS3. In PS color settings, preserving embedded profiles is checked. Yes, it seems to me as well that this is some color management issue. The 30" Cinema display was calibrated using Color Eyes Pro and Spyder2 to Gamma 2.2 and 6500 temp. However, even when reverting to the standard Apple color profile for the monitor, the problem persists.
    No luck so far...
    Immanuel
