Photoshop CS3 memory release problem

Hi,
I have been working on a large group of DNG's and I'm noticing that as I proceed through the edits my computer memory seems to be 'not releasing'. Example: Select photo, process it in RAW, open it in Photoshop CS3, edit, save and CLOSE the image. My computer memory does not seem to be refreshed when I close the image and eventually, after several images, I have to close the application to retrieve the memory. I am running on a PC Vista with 3 gig of memory (max my operating system will work with).
If anyone has suggestions, I would appreciate them.
Thanks,
J.

It won't use only 75%, either. It
i allocates (i.e. reserves)
75% at opening if prefs are set that way, but will use all the RAM that the system has available if necessary. That's the reason you don't set ridiculous memory allocations of 90-100% in prefs (unless you have more than 2GB of RAM, which is PS current maximum) - there's no free RAM for the system to use after Ps launches in that case, so only virtual memory remains for the system and everything will slow or crash.
Once PS has used all available RAM (not only its allocated RAM), then it will start writing scratch - which is also set up and waiting at opening. I'm assuming PS was set up this way for initial speed - if it has RAM already allocated at opening it will not have to waste processor time calling for RAM.
It took me a while to get around the concept of all this, but I think I understand it now - it is in fact very well thought out for maximum speed and stability.

  • Photoshop CS3 and Mavericks problem?

Using photoshop CS3 in Mavericks and I get a ‘can't save file because it is already in use or was left open’ message when I try and save a photoshop file.
Found a fix online which is to turn off ‘Show preview column’ in show view options, but this is a pain because I like to have the preview with image and file info.
Is there a way around this, seems a strange way to get around this problem.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended Activation Problem

Hi all, hoping someone can help me.
I have a legitimate hard copy of Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended which was only recently taken out of its sealed package.
On installing and trying to activate I get an error. Now i am left with a window telling me "Registration Unsuccessful"
Any ideas how i can go about solving this? I legally own this copy and I need to use it and can't do with it deactivating.
Thanks in advance for any help given. It's very much appreciated!

Mordynak I am sorry but I find no software titles registered under the Adobe ID/e-mail address you used to post to this forum.  From this discussion it sounds like you have already utilized the process listed in Find your serial number quickly.

  • Photoshop CS3 Color Range Problem

I am having an issue with the color range selection tool in Photoshop CS3 on an iMac G5 running Snow Leopard.
I've been using this tool for years and it's always worked properly until now. It no longer selects the color I've picked with the eyedropper. The only time it works properly is when I set the image to grayscale mode. In any other mode, it selects erratically, like the image below. Those are clean rectangles I created with the paint bucket, so I'm not sure where the lines selected in the Color Range view are coming from. Adjusting
"Fuzziness" doesn't help. The image is set to 8bits. Any ideas?
I've tried using the color range on another computer with the same settings and it works fine.

Is the Eyedropper Tool set to Current Layer in the Options Bar?
If nothing else helps you can always try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed).

  • I downloaded Yosemite OS for my iMac and now photoshop cs3 has a problem.

When I go to "file information", enter info and click "OK" or "Cancel" nothing happens.  The screen remains.  Only by Quit Photoshop does the screen disappear.  Any thoughts, please?  This did not occur before the download of the new OS.
    Thanks for any help.

I tried the link and clicked on photoshop cs3. I got the download dialog.  Maybe the server was down or you could try a different browser. I had the idea your CS3 install was working on your previous OSX and the upgrade to Yosemite broke it. I'm skeptical that a repeat would get different results, but if you're willing to chance it, why not?
roaringapps.com is the place to go when checking if some Mac app will run on Yosemite and they passed it.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Leopard problem changing number values in the tools

I know that Adobe has mentioned on their site that this is a known problem and that the fix is going to come from a Leopard update. I have not seen anything on this problem from the Mac side so I am wondering when a fix can likely be expected. The Adobe link is http://www.adobe.com/support/pdfs/PhotoshopCS3_LeopardIssue.pdf
    Any clue?

  • Photoshop CS3 beta + Aperture problem

Is anyone having any trouble with photos in Aperture that were altered in the new PS CS3 beta?
I sent a photo to CS3 and added a few adjustment layers and when I saved, the thumbnail in Aperture appears as if it's inverted... like a negative. And the full screen version is much higher contrast than the PS version. Exporting a jpg shows the same problem. However, when I open that same image in PS again (using the open in external editor command), everything shows as fine.
Possibly just a bug since CS3 is still in beta?

    Matthew,
You can get this type of effect if you're using Alpha Channels in CS, CS2 etc. Did you by any chance save the image with an additional alpha channel?

  • Photoshop CS6 Memory Leaking Problem

Adobe CS6 extended is using between 3.1GB - 9.8GB of ram.
It doesn't stop when i close all the psd files, only frees up when i close the program.

Open Photoshop. Photoshop (Mac) or Edit (Windows) > Preferences > Performance. Reduce the Allocated memory (RAM) for Photoshop.

  • Photoshop CS3 & Mac Leapard Problem.. Type Tool question mark

I am having a problem that I cannot figure out. I just bought this software and was able to use it a couple of times before it started doing this.
The problem is when I use the Type Tool and choose a color it will show a question mark (?). When I type you cannot see anything. Its like it can use any color.
The Masked Type Tool works fine, but whenever I use the regular type tool I cannot change the color or even see what i'm typing!

On my old iMac G5, with Leopard and CS3, sometimes the color picker would freeze my whole machine.
When I bumped the RAM up to 2Gb, that went away.
Unfortunately, the G5 processor cooked about two weeks later, but PS ran fine for those two weeks.

Can anyone help? I really have no idea how to fix this!

  • Photoshop CS3 Installation Problems

A customer has purchased Photoshop CS3 & is having problems installing on Vista Business
If I logon to the Users PC as Administrator & install it there, what steps will I need to take to access it from the Users account
    Thanks

Well, who told you it was for a Mac? If you bought it at a retail store, you should be able to take it back there and exchange it for a Mac copy. If you bought it used, you should demand a refund from whoever you bought it from.
Of course, that is all assuming it's actually a Windows copy, and there's not something else going on... What does it say on the CD? My Photoshop Elements CD is very clearly labeled "Macintosh."

  • Best Mac/Photoshop CS3 set up.

    Hello,
I have been reading several posts throughout the forums and would like to confirm a few things on the best MAC/Photoshop CS3 set up.
    Here are my specs:
    MacPro 2 x 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon - MAC OS 10.5.4
    PS CS3 10.0.1 (Full CS3 as well)
    18 GB 800 Mhz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Internal Drive 1 = 320GB from Apple, partitioned in half. 50% OS, System Drive, Applications, etc. 50% Scratch disc.
    Internal Drive 2 = 320GB Hitachi Main Media/working Files
    External Drive 1 = 750GB GTECH SATA II, 7200 RPM/16MB cache - Secondary Freelance Media/working Files
External Drive 2 = 1TB Maxtor, 1 Touch. I'm not too fond of this drive, but I have it and use for a dedicated B/u, Super-Duper and Time Machine. (FYI - I also have an off-site b/u server)
I believe I have searched and read most of the recent posts on the subject. But, maybe I missed something. If so, please provide a link. Here are the two that I thought were most relevant to my question.
"Optimize performance in Photoshop CS3 & Memory allocation and usage (Photoshop CS2)" and all the associated links provided. http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bbb6813
    "Scratch Disc/RAM allocation issues" http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?128@@.59b5c2e9
    Thank You!
What I do primarily with the system:
Graphic Design for both print and the website design. Occasionally very large files for vehicle wraps and/or large format banners.
New on the horizon: HD Video Editing/Final Cut. I know that is another forum. But if you have experience with that, please chime in. If necessary, I can take that part of the conversation to another forum. My primary focus is performance with CS3, most of my time being spent in PS.
    So, here is my questions:
    1) Is my current set up the best for PS CS3 performance?
    2) Have I missed anything?
    3) Can/should I reduce the scratch disc size? Is this size overkill?
19GB Ram, Set PS Memory Usage to 100% "Available-Memory Allowance"
    150GB dedicated scratch disc
    Thank you in advance,
    Steve

    A Quick Update:
I did not touch either of the external drives. While I was deciding on what to do, another situation arose; Remember part of my original post, "New on the horizon: HD Video Editing/Final Cut."? Well this has come to a head and I needed to move forward on this. After a bit of research, I quickly realized I had a bigger problem... Disc space HD Video Editing. This forced a new purchase of two internal 1 TB Drives.
    Here is the adjusted set up;
    (2) 23" HP2335's
    MacPro 2 x 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon - MAC OS 10.5.4
    18 GB 800 Mhz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Internal Drive 1 = 320GB from Apple, Dedicated System Drive, Applications, etc.
Internal Drive 2 = 320GB Hitachi partitioned in half. 50% Main Media/working Files, etc. 50% Scratch disc.
Internal Drive 3 = 1TB Seagate Barracuda - (awaiting set recommendation. Slotted as FCE Scratch)
Internal Drive 4 = 1TB Seagate Barracuda - (awaiting set recommendation. Slotted as FCE BU until an external is available)
    External Drive 1 = 750GB GTECH SATA II, 7200 RPM/16MB cache - Personal Freelance Media/working Files
External Drive 2 = 1TB Maxtor, 1 Touch. I'm not too fond of this drive, but I have it and use for a dedicated Time Machine B/U. (FYI - I also have an off-site b/u server)
    Thats all for now.
Thank you for all those who commented.
    Steve
Ps. The part of my original post: "I can take that part of the conversation to another forum." I will be posting in the FCE forum.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 Bridge

I finally succeeded installing photoshop CS3. My problem now is Bridge is buggy the only mode that I can use is light table, when I change modes the interface breaks up and I have small broken up ikons every time I try to get a thumb nail to open. Photoshop seems to be ok. Lightroom works great and I never had any problems with PS CS2. CS3 beta worked great.

  • Photoshop CS3 crashing when opening or saving files

I wonder if anybody here know why this problem won't disappear even after reinstalling my Photoshop CS3? Whenever I try to open a file (any image format) or save by using Cmd+O, Cmd+S or the File menu in Photoshop, Photoshop is crashing. Brutal crash, goes down. This means I can't save anything I create. Exporting via "export to web" is working, but I can't save (or save as) PS documents.
I have deleted all prefs files etc, and reinstalled Photoshop CS3, but that did nothing.

Hi. To read about application crashes, you can look at http://www.tekserve.com/service/mac-faq/crashes-freezes/application-unexpectedly -quit.php and follow the suggestions in http://www.tekserve.com/service/mac-faq/crashes-freezes/application-troubleshoot ing.php. In particular, I would check for updates to your Photoshop application. The disk installed version of Photoshop CS3 had various problems with Leopard. As I remember, one of the problems was crashing when using the Open and Save dialog boxes. If for some reason you can't update to the latest version of CS3, or you're already at the latest version, you could try going into the Photoshop preferences and seeing if there is a toggle for Adobe dialog boxes vs Apple dialog boxes. I recall CS3 having such a setting but I can't find it in CS4 right now. I also recall having a similar problem with CS3 and Leopard until I ticked that checkbox one way or the other. Good luck!
