Photosmart C4580 on encrypted university network: change static IP to DHCP

My HP Photosmart C4580 All-in-One works beautifully as a wireless printer on small networks such as my home network that goes through one WEP encrypted router.  However, neither myself nor the HP support person I spoke with over the phone can get my printer to connect to my HP dv5-1235dx PC (Vista operating system) through my college's wireless network.  The network is encrypted (I do not know if it is WEP, WPA, or something else), and does have several visible SSIDs from where my printer is because there are several routers in the building, adding to the complexity of the issue.
The crux of the problem is:  I called the school's IT support and they said that I need to change the printer from a static IP to a DHCP but they do not provide support for wireless printers and therefore cannot do this for me. HP support was unable to help me do this when I called them.
Is there a way I can do this if I do not have administrative privileges on the network and obviously did not set up the network?  I am not sure whether or not I am allowed to access the router I am closest to to do things such as cycle the power to it.
Thank you!

I think you are out of luck without admin access to the network.

  • HP Photosmart C4580-hpzsetup.exe

I have an HP Pavilion dv5 Notebook PC that I purchased in Sept 2008.  It is running Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2, 32-bit operating system.  I have an HP Photosmart C4580 All-in-One Printer that I also purchased at the same time.  I have had printing and scanning issues on and off during the almost two years since I got the computer.
Originally, I had set up the printer to work with my wireless router.  The scanner would not function at all.  The printer would arbitrarily cut off the bottom of documents in MS Word, Excel and Notepad.  Hours and hours of tech support with HP, including them co-piloting my computer, led to multiple uninstalls and re-installs of the driver software.  None of this helped.  I finally gave up, went to a USB hook-up and this helped the printer but the scanner never worked.
In March 2010, the laptop had a complete motherboard failure.  Fortunately, I had a service plan with Best Buy.  They sent it to a service center and replaced it.  When it came back, I asked the Geek Squad to look at the scanner.  They got it to work FINALLY!
Until a couple of days ago, everything was fine.  The printer was printing properly and was scanning from the HP solution center.  I’m not sure if what I did next had any impact but I had to replace the laptop battery.  I “safely removed hardware” including the printer, shut down the computer, unplugged everything and then replaced the battery.
When everything was hooked up again, I started getting a security pop-up (I have Kaspersky) saying “hpzsetup.exe” needed my permission to run.  If I hit "cancel", it gives me another pop-up (“hpzstub.exe) that says "To complete the Hewlett-Packard installation, you must click Retry on this screen and click Continue or OK on the next screen.”
If I choose “Continue” from the first dialog box or "Retry" from the second one, I get a screen that seems to indicate an installation is in progress and it fails. It says “Fatal error during installation” and gives an “error stub” with a number.  Some of the numbers have been “3148606”, “1116386”, “1181452”.  It gives me  a different number each time.  The dialog box says “Installing HP Photosmart C4500 Series” and lists the following steps: 1. Checking system.  2. Preparing to Install.  3. Installing 4. Configuring Your Product  Then the program seems to get hung up on Step 4 at 96%.  This dialog box doesn’t go away until I press “OK” on the error dialog box.
If I hit "cancel" on the “To complete” message box, the pop-up goes away but after a few minutes, the "hpzstub.exe" pop-up comes back.
So far, I've run the registry cleaner and a full Kaspersky scan but it's still happening. I can't seem to locate either of these things in a folder or anything so I don't know where they are coming from. I’ve also downloaded HP update and tried to download a software patch as indicated in another thread but to no avail.  It's maddening. How do I get this stupid thing to go away?  I would appreciate any help you can suggest.
By the way, our brand-new Toshiba laptop has absolutely no problems with the printer or scanner and is able to connect through the wireless router or USB.  It’s frustrating that the Toshiba works perfectly when the HP seems to have so many issues.

My printer is out of warranty.  Wireless works fine with other computers.  One is a Windows XP desktop and the other is an HP Compaq CQ-6150DX  Windows 7 - 64 bit Notebook.  Not sure if ALL features work - For starters, printing works OK.
In the computer under question ( HP Windows Vista 32 bit system ) the original installation was USB cable to printer..
I had hoped to change the above setup from PRINTER TO USB to WIRELESS ( like other two computers ).
This PC works fine with router in accessing the internet with a Cisco WUSB54GC USB wireless stick.
As matters stand, after downloading latest Photosmart drivers and uninstalling and installing several times I get the following messags:  "The connectect printer does not support wireless network."  THIS MAKES NO SENSE:
Two other messages came up in my failed frustrating installation attemps:
"the specified service does not exist as an installed device."  THIS ALSO MAKES NO SENSE:
"The HP software that enables network is not responding.  Cancel the installation and retart the PC."  **bleep** !
BEEN THERE.  DONE THAT.  Several times.   Incidently, USB to printer PRINTING STILL WORKS anyway.
Has ANYONE been able to get wireless working on Windows Visa with HP PHOTOSMART printer?
I am good at following step-by-step instruction - ONES THAT ACTUALLY WORK, THAT IS:
I am NOT interested in what may or may not work with printers other than C4580 SPECIFICALLY:.
After reading of others investing HOURS in trying to get HP Plotosmart C4580 to work wireless to work with my HP Windows Vista to work I hesitate to follow instructions that list several OTHER HP products which may or may not be comparable. I do not have several hours to for more failed tries. ANY SUGGESTIONS GREATLY APPRECIATED.
As matters stand, I have the printer working OK with a USB to Photosmart connection. It prints OK for now.
Again, has ANYONE ever gotten the Photosmart C4580 working normally with Windows 7 - 64 bit ? ? ? ?
    THANK YOU.

  • HP Photosmart C4580 Wireless - cannot get to work

I just had to get a new computer and new printer.  While I was at it, I established a wireless network.  I am running Windows Vista 64-bit on the new computer (Gateway) and have an HP Photosmart C4580 printer with wireless capabilities.  I cannot get the printer to work consistently.  Everytime I reinstall it, it works fine until either it or the computer goes to sleep or shuts down.  Then it doesn't work anymore.  Reinstall...it works...sleep, it stops working...vicious cycle.
I have spent HOURS with HP Chat trying to fix this, and even more time trying to find a solution myself.  This is my first HP product and I must say that I'm about at my wit's end with it.  I find it hard to believe that I am the only one on earth with a similar problem, yet I can find no help anywhere.  I'm sure that I'm doing something wrong, but I don't have enough experience to figure it out and cannot seem to find anyone who does.
I would appreciate any help I can get at this point.  This is my last resort before I give up and go back to Dell!!!

I have a couple of questions and some suggestions:
Is the IP address of the printer, the computer or both changing over time?
I recommend setting a DHCP reservation for the computer and the printer.  Log on to your wireless-router, look for LAN setup, address reservation.  You should see a list of clients connected to the wireless-router.  Set reservations for at least the printer and the computer.
Uninstall the SW (sorry about this) and reinstall.
With the IP address of the computer and the printer now fixed, the SW shouldn't have any trouble finding the printer when it wakes from sleep (I hope).
BTW -- unless you're using a very inexpensive surge protector, the printer should be fine connected to it.   I think the advice to plug the printer directly into the wall as a way to fix SW problems is quite interesting.

  • HP printer Photosmart C4580

the problem has surfaced since I changed from BT to Plusnet. the printer will not be recongised. can print using a adhoc wired system only. have tried the error reinstallment many times but always have this --"Key not valid for use in specified state"
Also when trying to download, two messages  1) device not switched on,or not required for your computer.
the problem might be that the new router is 208.ll n  and my computer is wireless 208.llb/g, the manufacture of the new router states that therouter is back compatable with the older system.

    Thanks for replying PapaNoel
I will recommend that you connect the printer to your wireless network following my colleague @Sunshyn2005 's instructions in this Re: cannot configure photosmart c4580 to connect to my wireless network thread/post.
Once the printer is connected to the wireless network, I'd recommend temporarily disabling any anti-virus you may have running (this Disabling and Re-enabling Your Firewall Software in Windows document has some tips for firewalls) and re-download the software from HP's website, or from the following link: HP Photosmart C4500 All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Driver.

  • Has anyone been sucessfully printing to an HP Photosmart c4580?  If so, can you point me in the right direction?

Hello, I am trying to figure out if is possible to print from an IPAD2 to an Hp Photosmart c4580 series printer.  I have run across all kinds of advice pointing to a multiple of apps (all cost $) but need to be sure I can complete the connection prior to purchasing.  HP dos not list this unit as supporting AirPrint, and pimps an app of their own.  Anyone solved this problem?

There was a cool new device discussed on Engadget a week or so ago.  Lantronix is creating a print server that stands between Bonjour(iOS) devices and standard non-Bonjour printers.  Here are  links on it.
    http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/13/xprintserver-offers-up-wireless-printing-for- ios-devices-makes/#continued
    http://www.lantronix.com/it-management/mobile-print-servers/xprintserver.html
As i understood the article it would cost about $100...this may not be right for your  specific use case, and it won't be available to 1st quarter 2012, but you might find it interesting.  If you are on a home network AirPrint works great, in an enterprise environment, you have to fiddle a bit with the access points and network infrastructure to allow mDNS(Bonjour) packets to move back and forth.

  • Mac Mini Server on my university network?

    Hello,
I am a university professor and I would like to install a Mac Mini server in my laboratory to connect all my Macs (I have 4 so far). Obviously, my Macs are already connected to the Internet through the campus network (fixed IP), but since my university is an anti-Mac institution, I cannot have access to network drives and other networking goodies (we are on Novell). Anyway, that's why I want to buy a Mac Mini server to connect all my Mac and be able to share files, allowed different permissions to my undergraduate, grad, Ph.D. students, etc. plan and call meeting with iCal Server, communicate with my lab users with iChat, etc. However, I don't need email services; we use the one provided by the university.
So my question is simple : can I create my own little local network with a Mac Mini Server that will be connected to my university network/server? I am kind worried about IP conflicts and other network related problems and being called to the IT office...
    Your comments will be welcome!
    Thanks!

The real answer to this depends on two things:
    1) whether you're just trying to do this within your lab, or you want external systems to be able to get to your services (e.g. students be able to access these resources from outside the school network)
    2) whether each device in your schools' network have real-world IP addresses, or whether the network uses NAT.
If the answer to 1 is that this is only within the lab then there isn't likely to be any issue - get an IP address for your server from the network admins (which is why #2 is relevant) and you're set. The network guys would only have other involvement if you wanted to get external access working, in which case you've got to talk to them about opening holes in firewalls, etc.
If this is purely internal (or, at least, doesn't need access from outside the school network) then there isn't likely to be any problem. You could even get away without DNS, although it would be nice if you could get a sensible hostname from the DNS administrators (e.g. server.yourlab.yourschool.edu) but even without that there shouldn't be anything preventing you from running a service and having internal clients connect to it (other than policy issues, of course…). For the most part the admins wouldn't even know you're running a server.
Getting a static, non-conflicting IP address that valid for the school's network is going to be key, though.

  • How to scan HP Photosmart C4580 connected to my Time Capsule.

Hi, I just got a HP Photosmart C4580 connected to my Time Capsule, And I can send my printing jobs without any problem, But I can't scan sending the command throw the network, I tried with the Preview app   Image Capture, nothing worked.:-(. When I connect the printer via USB scanner works fine.
How can I send the sanner job to the printer via Time Capsule?

No you are using the wifi in the ad hoc mode.. you can join it to the TC in infrastructure mode.. ie as a client of the TC.. and therefore on the network.. what I meant was the TC is not the print server.. the TC has no part in print jobs or scan jobs.. the TC knows nothing.. it is a router and gives an ip to a client.. what that client is, the TC has no idea.. that is what you want.. the TC is uninvolved in the job .. meaning it does not take part in printing or scaning or faxing or anything else. It is merely a switch on the network. It sends packets it does not understand to the right address.

  • Airport Express and wired network with static IPs

I have a wired network with static IPs. I have a block of free IPs I can use to connect to this network. Manually setting any of one IP from this block on my MacBook Pro via ethernet works great - full network connectivity including internet.
What I wish to do is add an Airport Express in between my MBP and the network, so that I may have greater freedom (wireless opposed to wired). Is the AX capable of this? If yes, what are the correct settings? Keep in mind there is no DHCP server on the network.
I have tried giving the AX an IP manually and then accessing it from the MBP having the AX share IP (effectively becoming it's own DHCP server?). This gives internet connectivity, but I can't see any of the servers on the network. I assume because I'm now on a new subnet.
So I then changed the AX settings to not distribute an IP and gave the MBP another IP from the block (different from the AX). This gives me the network, but no internet.
    What am I doing wrong?

Okay, I made a mistake and forgot to set the DNS servers manually. It seems the second method works fine. I've set up WPA2 security as well - I'm assuming this is okay in this situation. What is the correct term for this setup? A wireless access point bridge? Is there anything more I should know about this setup? TIA

  • My HP Photosmart C4580 no longer supported by HP or Apple. How can I reinstall printer driver?

I uninstalled my HP Photosmart C4580 thinking I could reinstall from the CD that came with it only to find out that the CD doesn't cover Mavericks. HP and Apple no longer support this printer. Suggestions?

This document says the C4500 series driver is available for automatic download/install when you add the printer in Print & Scan prefs:
OS X: Printer and scanner software available for download
Have you tried adding it yet?
PS - The CD is almost always outdated by the time you buy the printer. Don't bother with the CD.

  • Why can't I setup my HP Photosmart C4580 Printer with my Macbook?

Okay, first of all, I've got to say that this has to be one of the most troublesome pieces of computer hardware that I've ever had the misfortune of running across. The only thing that keeps me from going all "Office Space" on it, (as another frustrated user put it) is that I've had the printer since I got my Macbook in late 2008, and there have been huge stretches of time when it has worked more or less perfectly. However, each time I update my OS, or try to add the printer to a new computer, all **** breaks loose. This latest time has really taken the cake- as I've been messing with it consistently for several weeks and have not been able to use it at all.
I guess it began when I upgraded to OS X Snow Leopard around April. Prior to this the wi-fi printing had worked fine, but after this upgrade for some reason I could only print with the USB connected. Then, about a month ago I upgraded to OS X Lion, and I'm still unable to get the wi-fi printing to work.
The point I'm at now, is that I've downloaded what I believe to be the appropriate HP setup utility package, and went through that all the way through where it sets up the wireless functionality of the printer and it says to go to 'Print & Fax' in System Preferences and add the printer. So I do that, and I get to this point:
    Setting up 'Photosmart C4500 series
    [F559E3]...'
Software for this printer is available from Apple.
Would you like to download and install it?
... where I obivously click "Download and Install". At this point, I get a dialog that says "Finding software" for several minutes, and then says:
    Setting up 'Photosmart C4500 series
    [F559E3]...'
The software for this printer is currently unavailable.
Please contact the printer's manufacturer for the
    latest software.
... at this point the only option is "Cancel", and when I click that, I'm left with no printers in my list of printers. Likewise, if I don't click "Download and Install on the previous screen, it cancels the setup.
This leads me to believe that it may actually be an issue with Apple instead of HP at this point, but I'm not sure. Likewise, I've tried other options such as setting up the printer by it's IP address and by something called an HP Jetdirect - Socket, but those methods were unfruitful.
I feel like I should note that, when I go to "Add Printer", I'm presented with a list of both the USB connected version of my printer, and the "Bonjour Multifunction" version (wi-fi). So it seems that the computer is having no trouble at least detecting the printer, which has been a problem for me in the past.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Despite HP's statement that 10.7 is supported for the Photosmart C4580, there are no drivers for this.  I spoke to their Support Line and basically you need to buy a new printer.  Wow!  Wish I had known that before I upgraded to Lion.
HP does have a Trade-In and Trade-Up program.  Sounds like the newer model printers will also handle the AirPrint for your iPhone and iPads.

  • Printing cards and labels on Photosmart C4580 printer

I couldn't find my particular problem using the search so I'm hoping for some answers here. I have a Photosmart C4580 printer connected to a Toshiba laptop running Vista with all the current updates. My problem is that I can't seem to get it to print on business card stock or addrress label stock. Here's the issue:
I use Word to create business cards to print onto business card stock. The instructions that came with the card stock say to do a test page on regular paper first to verify placement, which I do - everything looks perfect so I put a page of card stock in the feeder. The printer grabs the page and prints with the image offset towards the top of the page by about 1/4" so that the top of the card is above the edge of the cards. As the cards are repeated down the page, it shifts down slightly so that by the time it gets to the bottom of the page it's almost on the card, but still overlaps the top edge slightly. Printing onto regular paper works perfectly every time.
A similar thing happens printing address labels - again using Word to create the labels for either Avery 5267 or Avery 8161 label stock. On regular paper everything looks perfect, but feed a sheet of label stock in and the text is offest toward the top of the page. The last time I needed labels I was able to get it to print properly by printing one label at a time, then refeeding the page and printing the next one, then repeating until each label on the page was printed. When you're printing several pages of labels that takes a lot of time!
Is there something I need to do to get this printer to print cards and labels?

  • Photosmart C4580 won't print - push a button on printer it shuts down

The Photosmart C4580 has been reluctant lately to print anything at all. The documents sit in the spooler but won't print.
I've searched for this problem here and haven't seen same printer, same issue and solution, so here goes...
    Dell Dimension 3000
Win XP Pro Service Pack 3
I've had this printer since February 2009.  I've set it up on the USB port.
Three weeks ago I upgraded the memory from twin 256 module setup to twin 512 using Dell products. Obviously, I took the PC apart, cleaned the dust bunnies, installed the memory and everything worked great after rebooting - including the printer.
About two weeks ago a carriage jam error popped up. It wasn't jammed but I pulled the ink, reset them and restarted the printer. It worked fine - no noises, no jams, nothing.
Yesterday the printer quit printing at all. It said documents are printing but they just sat in the queue. I've done:
    1. HP Solution Center guided solution
(when it asks to hit the Cancel Button and Start Copy Color buttons to print Self Test, the printer shuts down every time)
    2. Windows troubleshooter
    3. The HP Support solution online
    4. Reinstalled printer using original CD
    5. Reinstalled using the latest install software from HP online.
*After the latest reinstall, where the program asks you to print a test photo page, it did not print. HOWEVER, after I shut down and restarted the printer, that photo printed! But I can't print anything else since.
Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.
