Pismo HD crashed?
My pismo G3 PowerBook (400MHz, 6 GB hard drive) quit booting up and I used the "PowerBook Software Restore" CD (SSW version 9.0.2) to boot it up and ran the restore feature. It ran for 5 hours then said the restore may not be completed. Then the PowerBook would not reboot even with the "PowerBook Software Install" CD. My qustions:
1. Is there a chance of restoring the software now or at least getting some files off the HD? and
2. If not, is this a bad HD issue and will replacing it make the Mac run ok again?
Thanks

Have you tried running "Disk Utility" off the "PowerBook Software Restore" CD? What did it say?

New drive crashing Pismo?
I bought and installed a Sony CRX380e DVD/CR-RW drive a week ago, and roughly since then my Pismo has crashed when coming out of sleep.
When the problem occurs, the computer gives the initial buzz as it starts up, then the sleep status light stops blinking, and I can't get any response. Force restart doesn't help, and I'm having to reset the computer to get it going again.
Normal restart causes the same problem, though the Pismo does come on with no problems if you shut it down.
The drive is working fine with both iTunes and Disc Burner. It's definitely set to master (though with all the trouble restarting, I haven't tried booting from it yet). But when I swap it with the expansion CD drive from my dear departed Lombard, I do not have any of these problems.
Does anyone have any insights?George,
Have you tried booting with the 'c' key?
Even though it may report as set to master, you may still need to make the modification...freezing on waking is a classic sign that the drive is not fully "mastered".
Here are two links (Norm already provided one), but the Pioneer link has much better pictures.

You can solder but windshield defogger repair kits also can be used in place of soldering. Some people have even superglued a short thin copper wire to bridge the two posts. -
Word 2008 crashing frequently on my upgraded 400 Mhz Pismo
I've just started to use Word 2008 on my upgraded 400 MHz Pismo while I recuperate from an operation and can't use my iMac and it is crashing frequently - is my 400MHz Pismo out of spec for Office 2008 apps? Is there anything else I can do to run Office 2008 apps? Cheers, Steve
Hi, Steven. Your Pismo doesn't meet the minimum requirements for Office 2008, which requires at least a G4 processor.
System Requirements
* Mac OS X v10.4.9 or later
* PowerPC G4 or G5 or Intel Core duo processor
* 512MB RAM
* 1.5GB free hard-disk space
* HFS+ hard disk format
* 1024 x 768 or higher display resolution
* DVD-ROM drive
* Internet access for Entourage and certain other features (fees may apply) -
Preferences Errors and Lots of software crashes...
Heys,
I am very new to this forum, so if this is in the wrong place I apologize!
I have a White MacBook (plastic cover, not aluminum or pro) that I bought in 2008, stupidly, I never got time machine up and running on it. I recently switched to a newer macbook, but realized it's not actually as good as this older one, so I did a Migration Assistant of all my settings and applications from my newer mac over to my older one.
Annoyingly though, now I'm back over here, I'm having issues.
Applications keep crashing (iPhoto in particular, especially when I plug in my iPhone), and whenever I try to change my desktop background I get this come up; "Preferences Error; Could not load Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane."
Does anyone know what's going on here? Any help is very much appreciated! Thanks for your help but I just can't figure it out. Maybe the Pismo 500 really can't handle the extra memory. But somehow that doesn't seem right. I tried all the fixes and looked at the websites, Dr. Smoke etc., that were suggested but nothing helped.
I can't figure out how to read the ram card to make sure it is the exactly right kind but I got it from a reliable dealer who only deals with Powerbooks. The sticker on the chip reads:
Samsung
KOREA 0215
PC133S - 333 - 542
M464S6453CKS - L7A
And printed on the chip it says:
SAMSUNG 214
K4S510832C-KL75
Whatever.
I brought the cards back to the dealer once already and got new ones and had the same problem with aps quitting.
I tried running the disk permissions program, removed bad fonts, completely zero'd my machine and put os 10.3 back on to see if maybe it was 10.4 that it wouldn't work with. I ran the Apple Hardware test. No luck!
I then tried one old 128mb card in the bottom and one of the new 512mb cards on top and same problem.
Finally tonight I just left in the one original 128mb card and there is no problem at all!
So I guess it's the ram cards, right?
But the question remains: Why is it quitting aps with 1GB memory installed?
Oh well, I'll check and see if the cards are maybe not exactly the right ones but I think the fellow I'm working with knows his stuff. He's been really good about helping me so the next step, he said, was to take back the second set of 512mb cards and get actual "Apple cards" (whatever that means) and see if they work. Does that sound good?
Thanks for your help and if you have any additional comments I would love to hear 'em.

Strange crashes, failure to wake from sleep..
My Pismo has begun to crash suddenly, or not wake up from sleep when I re-open the lid from a short period of being closed. Can anyone interpret for me what the console log for the last time it crashed is saying?
"Mac OS X Version 10.4.8 (Build 8L127)
2007-03-08 17:51:25 -0800
2007-03-08 17:51:27.380 loginwindow[146] FSResolveAliasWithMountFlags returned err = -43
2007-03-08 17:51:27.382 loginwindow[146] FSResolveAliasWithMountFlags returned err = -43"
Is there another crash log I should be looking for other than this one?
All help and advice much appreciated!
Anthony
PS No - I have not installed the latest Quicktime or iTunes updates. For starters, go ahead and create a new user account and see if the problem occurs in the new user account.. that will eliminate wether it's system software or something else at cause.. let me know how that goes, and then we can troubleshoot further.

DVD Player crashes after drive change
Hi everyone,
For the last 6 months or so, I've had my ThinkPad T23's Combo drive installed in my Pismo. It's a Matshita UJDA720 DVD/CD-RW that came with the ThinkPad originally, but has recently failed. I took the drive out and reinstalled the Pismo's original DVD-ROM drive, but the result has been that DVD Player now fails to load up when I put in a DVD Movie. Specifically, the player tries to load up, but stops, crashes and closes. I had to use PatchBurn to install the 720, but all related files have now been removed. Incidentally, I had the same trouble with the Combo when I first installed it, remedied by using PatchBurn 4. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Rob JohnsonRob,
I have no specific fix but here are a few suggestions:
- If you have an external monitor connected, remove it and test DVD Player.
- Are you sure the DVD-side of the OEM DVD-ROM drive is sound? These drives are known to fail in various ways. Check its health by booting your Tiger DVD.
- Make sure you have performed routine maintenance by flushing all the caches; the caches have occasionally caused problems on the Pismo with proper operation of the optical drive.
- If no success at this point, it is recommended you download to your desktop the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (PPC). Installing the Combo on top of your existing 10.4.8 will often solve various software issues; this Combo also includes the DVD Player.
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateppc.html
I install system updates in a very conservative manner: Run Repair Disk Permissions if you have not done so recently plus Verify Disk; if 'Verify' in First Aid fails, boot to your Tiger DVD and make repairs. A Safe Boot will also make most directory repairs but not all.
Once the HD is healthy, I restart with a Safe Boot/Safe Mode and run the Combo installer. Restart normally and test DVD Player. -
Compressor crash when attempting import files with 00* in name
I produce several short video files every day and name them using a sequential five digit numerical naming convention.
I'm finding that whenever I'm near, at or shortly after crossing a 100 mark Compressor crashes when I try and import single files with the following filenames (these are the most recent examples):
20993
21000
21001
21005
The only way to import these problematic files is to select the file before, or after, then Command click on the filename causing the crash. Click Open to import both into the batch, and then click on the file I first clicked on and hit Delete to remove it from the batch, leaving the file with the problematic name.
For Example. I want to import 21005 into Compressor for processing, but every time I try and import it Compressor crashes. So I re-launch Compressor, click the little Q button and click on 21004, then press Command and click on 21005. Click Open, import window goes away to reveal the Batch window. Click on 21004, press Delete button on keyboard leaving me with the file that was causing the crash.
FWIW apart from the file duration/size, there's no difference between these files. In fact I can change the names and the files that used to import fine now crash Compressor when attempt to import with any of the filenames above.
Here's the info behind two of the problem files and also that of the two adjacent files that import fine:
(all files: Dimension: 720 x 480. Codecs: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC. Channel Count: 2. Kind: Final Cut Pro Movie File. No color labels.

Mac OS X 10.4.8Hello,
Thanks for the replies/info.
Yes the Panther and Jaguar install disks are retail versions, not specific machine versions. And the Jaguar ones worked for the Powerbook before.
The Powerbook I have is the Firewire 500mhz one, Pismo I think it's called. The hard drive is a 60GB one. I didn't have to partition it before.
Reviewing all the above, it would appear that the problem is me not being able to use an internal, built in CD/DVD drive to install from this time? The only other thing it could be I think is the crash I recently had has had some bad effect -- but that's unlikely right? So, I need to get a new DVD drive? Or is there any other way to get the OS onto the Powerbook without getting another internal DVD/CD drive? Is there anyway to install onto the PB from another machine maybe?
Does that sound right?: not being able to use internal DVD/CD drive is the source of my current problem?
Thanks. -
Renaming Folder Crashes Finder
Greets. I've been experiencing Finder crashes ever since installing the latest Security Update (from last week). Finder crashes when I try to rename a folder. If I persist, it usually gets around to accepting it after the third or fourth try. I have two Macs--my main workhorse, the iBook, and my backup and general media playback device the Pismo. I get the problem on both computers.
What I've done so far (a lot of overlap between all of these things, I know):
(1) Rebooted with DiskWarrior and run all available checks, etc.
(2) Rebooted with the Tiger install disk and run Disk Utility's FirstAid
(3) Run all of the rebuilds/maintenance checks/etc. available through MainMenu
(4) Ran part of a Memtest, umm, test on my iBook. However, I abandoned that part way through since (a) it became clear that it was going to tie up my iBook for a lot longer than I can afford right now and anyway (b) I checked and the Pismo is having the exact same Finder problem. I rather doubt that the memory on both computers has suddenly failed, though just to be safe I plan to let my iBook chew on Memtest overnight tonight.
(5) Tried creating a new account to see if the problem still exists. It does not. Great, so now if I want to rename a folder, I have to log out, rename, and then log back in to my main account
(6) More to the point, clearly there's some app that I'm running on both computers that disagrees with the security update (or possibly Safari 3.2.1 . . . though I had already been running Safari 3.2.1 for a week or so but don't recall this problem coming up). The question is, which app? A.P.E. would seem to be a likely candidate, but I tried uninstalling it and rebooting, but the problem persisted nonetheless.
Here's my Finder crash log. Anybody have any suggestions?

To K Shaffer: I had already taken all the steps you recommended (permissions have been rebuilt with MainMenu, DiskWarrior, and DiskUtility; I launched from DiskWarrior and DiskUtility disks and rebuilt permissions that way, too; additionally, various bindings have been rebound, caches emptied, maintenance scripts run, etc. through MainMenu, which for all intents and purposes is the same thing as Onyx--I've yet to hear or see anything that convinces me one is better than the other and I find MainMenu to be more user friendly, but YMMV). The one thing I haven't done yet is run fsck. I'm rather inclined to believe it won't help, alas--I'll explain why in a second--though I plan to get around it anyway after I post this messaged.
To Klaus: As I said in my original note, I did uninstall APE. However, I didn't try wiping all traces of those Unsanity apps from my computer. I've now done that, but unfortunately the problem persists. Incidentally, I use Firefox as my browser, and in any event Safari crashes are not the problem.
To repeat one point that is a little buried in my original note. I am having this problem on BOTH of my Macs, on both my iBook and my Pismo, both of which are running 10.4.11, both of which were recently updated with Security Update 2008-008, and both of which began experiencing this problem after that update was applied. That's why I'm a little inclined to believe fsck isn't going to resolve my issue--this isn't a problem with just one computer (but who knows, I'll give it a spin anyway) I'm using my Pismo as a bit of a testbed right now. The Unsanity APEs are uninstalled. I've also uninstalled Default Folder X, which was recently updated. All pref files have been cleared out and I rebuilt permissions again after all that just for grins. The problem persists.
As I said, I rather doubt RAM is an issue, since the same problem appeared at the same time on two different computers whose RAM has heretofore worked without a problem for two years and four years, respectively. It seems like too big a coincidence for both to fail at the same time.
For further pondering, here's my Pismo's most recent Finder crash log, after all those uninstalls. Oh, and a minor tweak about the problem itself--Finder crashes when (1) I try to rename an existing folder OR file and when (2) I create a new folder AND THEN try to name it. After Finder reboots, it's allowing me to rename the folders and/or files in question.
Sigh. Any other thoughts?

Computer crashes on Safari launching
Hi there
My computer crashes when Safari or Software Update launch. The screen turns darker and a grave message in 4 languages asks to restart the computer by holding down the on button for few seconds.
Firefox, iTunes and Quick Time all 3 work fine when connected to the internet.
I've followed some steps I've found on similar issues in this forum like Repair Disk Permissions, delete Safari Preferences List, delete Safari Bookmarks List, reinstalled the Security Update 2006-06 but still the same.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
PB G3 500 Pismo Mac OS X (10.3.9) 45 Gb 512 ram cd/dvd rom wi fiHey iBod! thank you very much for your help
Every time I verified disk Permissions the options Verify Disk and Repair Disk remain dimm. How do I get there then?
Here there's a copy of the panic.log
Thank you

2 days ago my pismo froze up, unresponsive and the cursor wouldn't move. i turned it off but i could still hear the hard drive on. removed the battery and power, put them back in and it didn't start the first couple of times but then did. it had been feeling extra warm lately so i elevated off the table and it seemed to help. i ran maintinence and disk utility, there is one problem that it cannot repair but everything else is fine. i pressed in the processor chip again as this had been a problem in the past. it has been running for a few hours here and there but is still freezing up. i don't have much room left on my hard drive and i noticed that it freezed up more after i had put some mp3's on. deleted them and it ran again. just now, the fan kicked on thus making me think that it is not a temprature problem. currently i am operating with the battery removed and on ac power only.
anyone have any ideas?Erin:
i don't have much room left on my hard drive
As a brody noted, if your HDD is more than 85% full, it is too full and can not only cause performance issues, as noted, but also serious directory corruption, consequent loss of data and, eventually, a HDD crash.
Here's what I suggest:
1. Relieve some of the pressure by freeing up some disk space. Dr. Smoke's FAQ Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk has recommendations of how to go about this.
2. Take immediate steps to repair directory corruption which Disk Utility can't repair by using a third party utility like Tech Tool Pro, Disk Warrior or DriveGenius.
3. Install a larger HDD, like one of these at OWC. If you are at handy you can do it yourself with directions like:
PowerBook G3 Firewire Hard Drive Upgrade
ifixit PowerBook G3 Pismo
Please do post back with further questions, comments, or update.
Good luck.

Has anyone heard of this problem: I've upgraded my 256mb ram to the max 1gb using two 512mb cards and have been having random crashes of Safari, Photoshop, Limewire and other larger programs. This has never happened before on this computer! The program just disappears and I get a error message that the program quit and asks if I want to send a notice to Apple or restart the program. It seems to be random and hard to reproduce. I even had the first two 512mb ram cards taken out and two different ones put in and the problem is still there.
The person who is a Powerbook expert who put the cards in has never seen this problem before and can't seem to figure it out either.
Please help me with this. Maybe the 500mhz G3 Powerbook Pismo can't handle 1GB? We're really stumped on this one. I really need some help. Thanks.
Steve
PS: I'm typing fast because I'm afraid that before I get to the end of this message Safari is going to myseriously quit!
Powerbook G3 (Pismo)Cornelius and JPL,
Thanks for your help but I just can't figure it out.

I am trying to figure out if the problem I am having with my Pismo's PCMCIA slot is a slot failure or an incompatible PC Card. I am using a compact flash adapter that works in my powerbook g4 but in the pismo it just causes the finder in os9 to crash. in osx nothing happens at all and in both cases the apple system profiler shows nothing in the slot. also, when i boot from the os9 install cd it asks if i want to initialize it and then it fails. I have tried another pc card that reads memory sticks and it also doesn't work. Is the pismo finnky with pc cards? the airport card works, is that on the same bus? none of the pins are bent in the slot, it just seems like nothing is wrong.
thanks for your help guys.
JeffJeff,
Before replacing any parts, I would try a little more troubleshooting.
Try a FireWire or USB PC card in the Pismo.
In 9.x and FireWire PC card, you already have the FireWire Enabler and FireWire Support extensions, but you will need to add the FireWire CardBus Enabler in the Extensions folder. You can get one here:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/10842
In 9.x and USB PC card, you already have two necessary extensions, USB Device Extension and USB Software Locator, but you need three additional USB extensions for the USB PC card:
USB Mass Storage Extension
USB Mass Storage Support
USB Support
You can easily get these three extensions here:
http://eshop.macsales.com/tech/ftp/usb/usbextensions.sit
Expand the .sit file and just drag the three extensions to the System Folder icon or drop them in the Extensions folder. These are the five extensions:
USB Support v1.4.1
USB Software Locator v1.5.6
USB Device Extension v1.5.6
USB Mass Storage Support v2.0.4
USB Mass Storage Extension v2.0.4
In 10.x and FireWire PC card, all necessary software is present.
In 10.x and USB PC card, all necessary software is present. BUT, if you do not have a USB PC card with the correct USB chipset/controller, it will not work properly.
There is another limitation with PC cards...they do not supply sufficient bus power to run anything but the lowest powered devices, e.g. mouse on USB PC card. I have read that a USB PC card will mount a USB flash memory card.
My suggestion is this for the least amount of work: Beg/borrow a USB card and use in 9.x only after adding the necessary extension. See if the card shows up in the System Profiler; test a mouse; your iPod should also work; a USB HD should also work if it has its own power supply. You can also test a FireWire PC card in 10.x without adding any software. If you have a FireWire HD with its own power supply or a FireWire CD or DVD burner, it should work. -
Pismo shuts down while asleep. PMU cause -96?
Hi. My Pismo has recently started to shutdown unexpectedly while asleep. Since it's intermittent, I can't really tell if it realy goes to sleep and then shuts down or if it just dies when I close the lid, but not only MacOSX took notice of a forced shutdown (and offered to report it to Apple, but the CrashReporter never came up), it also had a line in system.log with "localhost kernel[0]: ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown, cause = -96".
Now, I know that ApplePMU messages seem to be some kind of state secret at Apple and that several guys with G5s are having problems with cause -122, but does anyone have any experience with this?
I've only been noticing it lately because I have a new battery and now I keep it sleeping far longer than before, because my old battery only had 5 minutes of life in it and this Pismo was basically chained to a wall.
Powerbook G3 Firewire Mac OS X (10.4.5) 1GB RAM, 40GB HD, AirportTiago,
I don't know what the error -96 represents, but I have seen the same PMU Forced Shutdown with numbers like -122 and -127 (again, no info).
I would reset the power manager and PRAM, then test.
You mentioned not knowing if it crashes or shuts down immediately; if you see the pulsing sleep light, it still is sleeping normally.
Does this issue occur only on battery or also when connected to the power adapter? -
Crash when attempting to install panther and jaguar
Hello,
Few days ago I suffered a nasty crash (kernel panic I think) from using Windows Media Player 9 and a partially downloaded movie. After that the computer was unable to restart. Blue screen after showing the starting up window and nothing more. (I asked about that in this thread "what are my chances of full/partial recovery?" http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1008280&tstart=0 ).
Managed to get all my personal files off the crashed Powerbook via another machine using firewire disk target mode. Having managed to successfully do that I thought it was going to be plain sailing from then on. I used Disk Utility to reformat the drive including overwriting with zeros, and the Powerbook drive appeared on the other machine's desktop completely empty and looking fine.
Having disconnected it from the other machine, using Panther install CD 1 to install Panther I got a kernel panic, the message in multiple languages including Japanese saying restart computer, soon after clicking the Install button.
I tried starting from the Jaguar install disk 1, choosing Disk Utilities to reformat the drive again (without zeroing it this time) and tried to install Jaguar instead. Soon after clicking Install the screen went entirely black with a bit of white text in the top left: The installer has quit due to an unexpected error (exit code 0). Please restart your computer.
What's going on? The computer was working fine before the Windows Media Player crash (which occured when viewing movie in full screen mode). I've wiped and reformated the disk and now can't install Panther or Jaguar. What could the problem be? Firmware? I'm guessing without knowing anything. I'm v. surprised the problem is continuing after reformatting the drive. That indicates that the crash effected something other than the contents of the drive?! which I thought was impossible.
Any suggestions would be much apprecaited.
Thanks.Hello,
Thanks for the replies/info.
Thanks. -
My Pismo HATES OS X! Why?
I have a Pismo 400 MHz. Mac OS 9 works great with it, however, OS X crashes/kernel panic anytime it is run on the system. I have had it boot off an iMac HD (via target disk mode) that is running 10.4.10. It will randomly crash. If trying to install OS X on to the internal HD, it will crash. I installed a copy of OS X on the internal HD (via an iBook & target DM). It would crash at random times. This makes me think it's a RAM issue. TechTool Pro 4 was able to boot and run. It found no issues. It also did crash after running the test solutions several times. In OS 9, I have run DIMM First Aid. It says the DIMMs checked out ok. Gauge PRO's memory test says the RAM is fine. Installed is the stock 64 MB chip in the lower slot and a 128 MB PC133 Kingston "ValueRAM" chip in the upper slot. I can't remove the 128 MB chip and have enough ram to boot OS X. I am planing on upping the RAM to 1 GB in time, but I want to sort out all the issues before investing the money. Any ideas?
P.S. It will crash with any version of OS X from 10.2 to 10.4...Runs great on OS 9!Bottleworks,
The weak, rechargeable backup (PRAM) battery will not cause a problem unless it develops an internal short, but this will prevent the powerbook from starting. Many users will disconnect the PRAM battery and continue using the powerbook until they get a replacement. Unlike a desktop, this battery works differently in a powerbook.
Since your Pismo runs fine in 9.x but not 10.x, I agree that this usually indicates a RAM issue, regardless of what the software memory testers report. They often will not find the subtle problems in RAM that cause a problem with 10.x but not 9.x. You are not going to remove the question of a RAM problem until you test a known-good memory.
You might remove the 64MB and just run the 128 in case there is a timing issue between the two modules. If it still panics/freezes, then you may just have a bad 128. You might then consider buying one name brand 256MB or 512MB module to replace your 64 and 128, then test with this one new module. This will keep your expenses down.
OWC is an excellent company with good product...here is what they offer:
