Place Management Data Warehouse in an Availability Group

Is it possible to place the SQL Server Management Datawarehouse in an Availability Group in order to have high availability?  If so, what happens during failover?  Is there any extra configuration needed on the secondary replica(s)?
Thanks,
Robin

Hi Robin,
According to my knowledge, you can place the Management Database Warehouse (MDW) database in an AlwayOn Availability Group.  And there’s no extra configuration needed on the secondary replica(s).
During a failover,  the target secondary replica transitions to the primary role, becoming the new primary replica. The new primary replica brings the (MDW) database online as the primary databases.
For more information about AlwaysOn availability group setup, please review the following article:

We have a four server set-up where SCSM, SCDW, and sqls for both are on different servers. Also I have red that this could be a SPN problem, but this has  been worked on last week without the SPNs.

On the computer you get the "SQL Reporting Services server is currently unavailable" message please open the Internet Explorer and try to connect to the URL <a href="http:///reports">http://<NameOfReportingServer>/reports
This should open the reporting website in IE. If this isn't working you should check the proxy settings in IE. If the URL doesn't work in IE it won't work in the SCSM console as well (and vice versa).

Actually I can't access to the reporting website. It asks me credentials 3 times and then return a blank page. Also error message comes to the EventViewer System log with id 4 and source Security-Kerberos.
The Kerberos client received a KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED error from the server "accountname".
The target name used was HTTP/"reporting services fqn". This indicates that the target server failed to decrypt the ticket provided by the client.
This can occur when the target server principal name (SPN) is registered on an account other than the account the target service is using.
Ensure that the target SPN is only registered on the account used by the server.
This error can also happen if the target service account password is different than what is configured on the Kerberos Key Distribution Center for that target service.
Ensure that the service on the server and the KDC are both configured to use the same password.
If the server name is not fully qualified, and the target domain (domain.com) is different from the client domain (domain.com), check if there are identically named server accounts in these two domains,
or use the fully-qualified name to identify the server.
I can access the website directly from the server which hosts Reporting Services.
Also I query "setspn -Q HTTP/"reporting services fqn" whit result NO SUCH SPN FOUND.

  • Management Data Warehouse Data Collection fails due to login failure

    Hello,
I am trying to set up a Management Data Warehouse on a server other than the one I want statistics of.  Unfortunately, each upload fails because the data collector upload job cannot log onto the warehouse server.  For some inexplicable reason the process is trying to log on using domain\serverName.  Obviously no such user exists, and the process fails.  Below is the error message I see in the logs:
Description: An error occurred with the following error message: "An error occurred while verifying the result set schema against the output table schema. The data collector cannot connect to the management data warehouse. : Login failed for user 'domain\server name$'.".
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Zachary

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb677211.aspx says
The data warehouse is installed on a different computer from the data collector. Probable causes are network connectivity problems or an unavailable host server. This error only affects upload packages.
Handling: Because there is no advance notification about a server shutdown, this error cannot be anticipated and handled automatically. The error is logged and after a brief interval, the upload is restarted. After four unsuccessful upload attempts, the collection set is disabled and its state is written to the execution log.
    Note:
Any data that is collected while the collection set is running is kept and accumulated. If the upload package can connect to the data warehouse, the accumulated data is uploaded.

It appears you are referring to production server performance.

  • Migrating SQL Management Data Warehouse to a new server

Is there a defined path for migrating a Managment Data Warehouse to a instance?
Does Microsoft provide any scripts for this? Is it a case of backing up and restoring databases to the new instance? And what about all the data collection sets running on the monitored instances? Do we have to re-point these to the new instance hosting
the MDW individually by logging on teach monitored instance? Or can we do this globally somehow?
    Thanks.

    Hi NiborTrassam,
    Sorry the delay.
To migrate the Management Data Warehouse, you can back up the MDW database, and restore it on the new instance. Then, on the new instance, you need to start the Configure Management Data Warehouse Wizard to create a Management Data Warehouse based on the
migrated MDW database, as well as upgrade the login mapping if necessary.
On each instance that is monitored, you need to start the Configure Management Data Warehouse Wizard to setup new data collection to point to the MDW data warehouse on the new instance.

  • Can UCP(Utility Control Point) and MDW(Management Data Warehouse) use together?

    Hi,
Can a server join a MDW and UCP at the same time? It seems that after i enrolled a instance which has joined a MDW, the collection data uploaded to UCP data warehouse only.
So can UCP use exist MDW data directly?
    thanks.

    Hi mark.gao,
UCP system uses the Data Collector feature from SQL Server version 2008.
If you’ve implemented the Management Data Warehouse feature in SQL Server 2008, you’ll either have to break that relationship and start pointing that data to your UCP instance, or you won’t be able to monitor it with this utility.
When enrolling an instances in UCP that is already using MDW, the UCP enrollment routine will change all the collections to go to the sysutility_mdw.
We could change the collection set to send data, including UCP data to our MDW database , the UCP utility on the manager would not see the MDW database. So in personally, UCP not use the MDW data directly.

    Hi Dennis,
In case you have your SAP system on MSSQL, you can definitely use Management Data warehouse
    to streamline performance troubleshooting.

  • Management Data Warehouse (MDW) vs. Utility

What's the road map for Managment Data Warehouse (MDW) vs. SQL Server Utility?
I've noticed that the database behind Utility is identical to the MDW database, so that makes me wonder if we're planning to merge the 2 technologies. Or, will we leave MDW for more comprehensive data with lower-level controls and use Utility only for
    a few high-level dashboard issues?
Are they managed by the same development team or do they have competing teams?
John Lambert, Microsoft Senior SQL Server Premier Field Engineer

    Hi John,
The management data warehouse is a relational database that contains the data that is collected from a server that is a data collection target. This data is used to generate the reports for the System Data collection sets, and can also be used to create custom
    reports.
SQL Server customers have a requirement to manage their SQL Server environment as a whole, addressed in this release through the concept of application and multiserver management in the SQL Server Utility. An enterprise can have multiple SQL Server Utilities,
and each SQL Server Utility can manage many instances of SQL Server and data-tier applications.
Data collected in SQL Server Utility by managed instances of SQL Server are stored in the utility management data warehouse (UMDW). It is just an aspect. I think they have other different usages.

  • Service Manager Data Warehouse Install - Analysis Server Configuration For OLAP Cubes Fail

    Hello everyone,
I have an issue with my installation of the Data Warehouse for System Center Service Manager 2012 SP1.
My install environment is the following:
Windows Server 2012 – System Center Service Manager (Successfully Installed) - Virtual
Windows Server 2012 – System Center Data Warehouse (Pending) - Virtual
Windows Server 2012 – MS SQL Server 2012 – Physical, Clustered 1st of Four Servers
The SQL Server is a clustered installation with named instances, specifically for SharePoint and Service Manager. Each instance has its own IP address and dynamic ports are turned off. I’m installing using the domain administrator account and I also chose
to run the installer as administrator. The domain admin has sysadmin rights to the service manager server and instance I’m trying to install on. However, the account does not have sysadmin rights to some of the other instances.
The install is smooth up until it needs to connect to the Analysis server database. I have tried connecting to the analysis servers on other SQL servers on site and all were successful. The only difference between the older SQL servers, the SQL 2012 development
server and the SQL 2012 Production server I’m trying to install to is that the that the domain admin account doesn’t have sysadmin access on all the databases on the new production server. The SQL server is being installed and configured by a contractor so
if you all have troubleshooting suggestions, I’ll need to coordinate with the contractor.
Starting with the screen below, I began searching for help online. There seems to be no one else with this issue or it is not documented properly. I opened a ticket with MS, called the contractor and troubleshot with him, troubleshot as far as I could on
my own and I’m still at a loss as to what is preventing the installer from connecting specifically to the analysis server.
I first thought the installer was at issue or that the data warehouse sever was at issue. But all signs are pointing at the SQL server. The installer is able to connect to all the other SQL servers – including other 2012 servers (same versions) – so it can’t
be the installer. I’m pretty sure the SQL server is going to be at issue.
After looking at this error, I opened the resource monitor and clicked the dropdown to see if it was trying to connect to the correct server and it was. I then connected to the old and new test and development servers successfully. Then connected to the
SQL 2008 R2 production cluster successfully. I then compared the two servers. The only difference other than the version numbers is that the admin account doesn’t have sysadmin rights on all the SQL 2012 database servers. But the database servers are not the
    problem. The analysis servers are.
I then checked the event logs and they are empty as far as this issue is concerned. Actually, there are no errors on the SQL 2012 production box and the Data Warehouse box. I then checked the log that the installer creates during every step of the installation
and this is what is created when the dropdown is clicked for the analysis server configuration screen. The log file location is:
    “C:\Users\admin\AppData\Local\Temp\2\SCSMSetupWizard01.txt”
In the file is the following text.

  • SCOM 2012 R2 Management Servers and SQL Server Availability Groups

My team is in the middle of rolling out a brand new install of System Center Operations Manager 2012 R2.
I have set up a SQL Server Availability group that is spread across multiple subnets and installed the initial management server per
    here.
As I have gone through attaching new management servers, I have noticed disturbing behavior.  When the AG fails over to another node, the management servers will lose connectivity unless I either recycle the service or it fails back to the original
node.  This is not a security issue as I have set up permissions.  It says it cannot connect to the database anymore at all.
Has anyone else seen this behavior?  Is there a setting I am missing somewhere?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Service Manager Data Warehouse - Updates

    Hi,
I have recently build an Analysis services cube using the DWDataMart database, and we also have out of the box cubes set up. This all works correctly, no issues. I have had a look in the database today and noticed that the table ResolvedByUserFactView (along
with many others) is simply a view of monthly tables combined eg. ResolvedByUserFactJan14, Feb14 etc. However the monthly tables only exist up to October 2014.
So my question is, are new tables automatically created as part of the daily ETL process for new months if they don't already exist?
If not can I create them myself and will they be populated automatically come November or will I need to look into the jobs also to populate the Data Warehouse? (Which I cannot currently access, and don't know if there is a way to amend them or if I have
to start from scratch? Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
These tables are automatically created for the next new month, please don't worry.
    Cheers,
    Marat

    Hi,
This may occur when there is a mismatch between the Report Server URL entered on the SSRS Server Location window for the Report Deployment Wizard and the SSRS Web Service Virtual Directory for the Reporting
    Services Configuration Manager.
Use the following steps to resolve the issue:
Launch the Reporting Services Configuration Manager on the server hosting SSRS
    Select Web Service URL
Copy the value entered in the Virtual Directory textbox
Paste it after the last forward slash in the Report Server URL textbox in the Report Deployment Wizard
    Continue on with the deployment
In addition, we may need to check you default web server IP is 'all unassigned', and ping the machine and see what default ip it has assigned.

  • Unable to register my data warehouse in Service Manager

I have been trying to register my data warehouse but keep getting the same error message each time - "Invalid URI:  the hostname could
not be parsed."  I know the issue is on the ServiceManager database side of things, but there is not a lot of information related to this error message and the info I do find is unrelated to ServiceManager.  I have gone as far as building a
brand new data warehouse server and reinstalling all of the data warehouse databases from scratch.  It doesn't matter if I tried to register with the original data warehouse environment or the new environment, I get the same error message.  I also
received a powershell command from Microsoft Support to help clean up any residual entries in the ServiceManager database that might be left over.  At this point I'm at a loss on how to proceed.  Anyone ever run into this issue?
    Here's the event log message:
Unable to register Service Manager installation with Data Warehouse installation.
     Data Warehouse Server: DW_SCSM
     Service Manager Management Server: FlowSMRC
Exception: Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.UI.Core.Shared.PowerShell.PSServiceException: Invalid URI: The hostname could not be parsed.
       at Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.UI.Core.Shared.PowerShell.PSHostService.executeHelper(String cmd, Object[] input)
       at Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.UI.Core.Shared.PowerShell.PSHostService.Invoke(String cmd, Object[] input)
       at Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.ServiceManager.UI.Administration.DWRegistration.Registration.DWRegistrationHelper.AcceptChanges(WizardMode wizardMode)
Also, I tried registering the data warehouse using powershell Add-SCDWMgmtGroup and get an error saying that Cannot associate Service Manager installation on scsm_server with Service Manager Data Warehouse installation on dw_server.

Just got additional information about this error. If you run the following query in SQL pointing to the ServiceManager database you should see the name of the Management Server.  The query is:
    select * from MT_Microsoft$SystemCenter$ResourceAccessLayer$SdkResourceStore
There is a column named Server_<some GUID> that should contain the Management Sever NetBIOS name.  If it has some other name, run an update query to ensure the column has the NetBIOS name of the Management Server.  Restart the SCSM Console
and retry the Database Registration again and it should succeed.
Microsoft has said that this is normally caused by either moving the database or database server to another server and the value is never updated.
Try registering the DW Server again and see if you have better luck.

  • Data Warehouse performance since changing retention settings?

    Hi,
I dont know if its a coincidence but I have managed to get into a bit of a state with regard to our data warehouse.
Firstly when the server was specced I dont think anybody actually worked out what size the databases would work out to be. I have started troubleshooting initially because of a lack of disk space. The DW was set to the defaults of 400 days etc and had grown
to around 700GB. Our operations DB is around 50GB in size. The disk at this point had around 50GB of space left.
Anyway I did some work on the retention in the DW to knock a lot of stuff down to say 9 months as needed. A week later and the data is now 500GB although the physical size is still 700GB.
Now I dont know if its coincidence but in the last couple of days I am getting performance alerts such as not being able to  store data in the DW in a timely manner, failing to perform maintenace and visual indications that things have slowed down on
the DW. For example an SLA report for the month for all servers now times out when before it ran in a few minutes.
So I am wondering if the "blank" space in the DW is now causing issues as there is data at both ends of the database perhaps. I would like to get this blank space back but no expert on SQL and wondering if any other considerations needs to be taken
for SCOM "to get this back".
I also understand that perhaps more disk space is required for the actual grooming so maybe I need to get down to 6 montghs of data before this can happen.
The performance part may not be tied to the issue but I guess either way I would like to get the space back if possible
    thanks

    There are sereval causes
    1) check any events or performance collection which generate a hugh DB and DW size by using the following SQL query in
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2007/10/18/useful-operations-manager-2007-sql-queries.aspx
    2) You can also refer to the following post
    http://deploymentportal.blogspot.ru/2012/08/operations-manager-data-warehouse.html
    3) check SQL logs on the datawarehouse, especially for blocking problems
Also, check Disk IO on the data warehouse (the windows mp collects these metrics). If it affects all Management Servers and the message does say "timeout" then the problem is likely to be at the SQL end. It may not be maxed out by CPU or Memory but
there are likely to be other bottlenecks on the SQL box. What is the Disk Queue for disks that the operations manager data warehouse data and log files reside? These are on seperate physical disks aren't they??
My guess is that it is a SQL issue .... temporary timeouts suggest that SQL is busy  doing something else. And I'd tend to concentrate my thoughts on Disk IO rather than memory or cpu.
