Playing foreign DVD in a macbook

Will playing a foreign DVD mess up anything with with my macbook? I'm too scared to put it in. It's one thing if it's just not compatible and won't play, but I don't want it to do any sort of damage to my laptop. I know there are different zones throughout the world where dvds don't work in other countries depending on the dvd player, but how does it work with dvd players in computers?
Anyone have experience with this? It's a dvd from Australia if that makes any difference.

You will indeed face issues with DVD region codes. You can read up on them and how they'll affect you here. Basically you cannot continue to play disks from more than one region, and Australia and the US are in different DVD regions. Eventually your drive will lock to one region and thereafter be able to play disks only from that region, which you probably want to the Region 1 (which is the one for the US).

  • I want to play a dvd on my Macbook and have it displayed on tv using my Apple tv

How do I play a dvd on my Macbook and have it displayed on the tv using Apple tv?

You can't directly.  ATV has no DVD drive.  If you can get AirPlay working (and keep it working) you can use a third party DVD player like VideoLan to play the DVD on the computer and use AirPlay to display the video on the screen.

My apple tv and airplay works great except when I try to play a dvd on my macbook. Have sound but no video.

You won't be able to view them via Apple TV, correct. It is not meant for this function, if that's your intended purpose its best to get a DVD player

  • This is the same question I've asked 3x in 24 hours, but it doesn't appear in the listing. Maybe I need help in phrasing questions?:)Q. why can I play some DVDs on my MacBook Pro but not on desk top Apple (they're both -1 year olds

    Hi
This'll be my third attempt in 24 hrs to ask the same question. maybe I need guidance on phrasing questions?:)
    Q. Why can I always play DVDs on my MacBook Pro but not always on my desk top Apple. They're both less than  year old. The desk top sometimes displays a message that says I have to change regions (from Australia to South America...doh...)

    Region Code 4:
Mexico, Central and South America, and the South Pacific.
Includes Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Aruba, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Falkland Islands, French Guiana, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, New Guinea, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, Venezuela
Apparently my first response was off in left field.  The DVD player has its own code.  My recommendation is to change the code when it asks.  It is possible that the disks that play correctly are region-free and the ones that don't have a region code.  If this does not work, you still have four more changes available; you won't be stuck with the new code.

  • With Apple TV can I play a DVD on my macbook and have it display on my TV

I have Apple TV...  have since it came out - but have no clue how to use it.  First question...  can I put a DVD in my macbook and have it display on my TV wirelessly through Apple TV

With Apple TV you stream content from your iTunes library using homesharing, provided the content is compatible

You can also use airplay with an IOS device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4437
Natively you can rent from iTunes and use a few other services like Netflix (varies by location)
As stated above you cannot stream a DVD

This is supposed to happen, licensing issue mean that Apple can't AirPlay protected content to other devices. You might try VLC instead of Apples built in DVD player.

  • How to play a dvd on a macbook pro with retina display

I recently bought a Macbook pro with retina display and was suprised to see that there is no slot to put a dvd or cd into. For the amount paid i feel this is ridiculous. However wish to seek a solution, does anyone know of how to solve this problem? Thankyou

Purchase an external DVD drive and attach it to your rMBP.  Or you can purchase the Apple model specifically made for it:

  • Playing Foreign DVDs

I'm in the US so my DVD drive is region 1.
I want to play region 2 DVDs on my iMac. I know it's possible to change the Region Code on my DVD drive but that this can be done only a limited number of times. So, I'm looking for another way.
Do I need to buy an external, Region-Free DVD drive? Please post your experience with a particular drive.
    Thank you.

Both of my Intel Macs with original Superdrives, an Early '06 iMac and an Early '09 Mac mini, have the issue of regional lock when I use DVD Player. Neither has the issue if I use VLC.
I never tested the new replacement Superdrive in the mini because long ago I just chose to avoid the issue altogether and set the Sys Prefs to open VLC whenever a video DVD was inserted in the optical drive. Everything here in Mexico comes directly from Apple in the USA. The Mexico Apple Store is serviced out of the same call center and warehouse as the US store. The AASPs get their parts directly from Apple in the US.
That said I shall test the new Superdrive with DVD Player later this afternoon when I have time to go across the hall to my apartment. I am a bit pressed for time at times occasionally today here in the office.

  • When I try to play a dvd Macbook Pro I get  a box with the message,This function is only for activated users. To activate go to Preferences and Donate" That took me to Mr. Gecko"s Facebook page wanting me to donate $1.99! Does any one know what this is? H

When I try to play a dvd on my Macbook Pro I get a box with the message " This is only for activated users. To activate go to preferences, donate" this takes me to Mr. Gecko's facebook page asking me to donate $1.99-$4.99.
Any clues on what this is, and/or how to bypass it? If I can report this to someone? Thanks

Sure sounds like malware, unles you installed something from a questionable site, then it's still malware but in a payware form as playing DVDs is free on Mac's.
Unless the DVD has software on it perhaps?
Does this work on any movie DVD or is this a special kind of DVD with software on it from someplace?

  • Apple TV & Macbook Pro:  DVD playback on Macbook, Can it be watched through Apple TV?

If I play a DVD on my Macbook Pro, is there a way that I can watch this through my Apple TV.  I'd like to be able to watch some things on a larger screen.  Is there a way to do this through iTunes?  Other ideas?

No. All content needs to be in iTunes to stream to ATV.

  • I can't play a DVD from my superdrive via my macbook pro to apple TV via airplay.

I can't play a DVD from my superdrive via my macbook pro to apple TV via airplay.  The movie plays fine on the macbook if I'm not trying to airplay.  The airplay works fine if I'm not trying to play a movie from the superdrive.  I think my apple TV is Gen 2.

If you get a checkerboard pattern it's because Apple block Airplay Mirroring of protected media.
    VLC Player may work.

  • My Macbook Pro will not play a Disney DVD (Howl's Moving Castle). It says supported disc not available but it plays on my cousin's Macbook Pro.

Basically my macbook pro will not play this one DVD. It is a dvd that is fresh out of the package that I order from amazon and it is the second dvd that I have tried. Amazon sent me a new dvd when there were problems but both are not working but my laptop will play all other dvds, including the bonus dvd that came with the dvd i am trying to watch. I tried playing the dvd in my cousin's macbook pro and it worked. I already repaired discs permissions and restarted my computer but i cannot get this dvd to play for the life of me. When I put it in the disc drive the laptop buzzes for a few seconds then spits it out. When I open dvd player before hand and hit play it gives the message "supported disc is not available"

The laptop is about 2 years old, and I watch a lot of movies on it. I would think I had set the region but I could be wrong. I'm in North America wouldn't that be the preset? Also, how would you go about changing or double checking that. Also if a movie was from a collaboration of disney and studio ghibli (japanese studio) would that mean I have to change the region just for that one movie? It would be weird if it were that way because I have another movie by disney and studio ghibli, and it plays, for that matter so does the bonus feature disc that came with this movie....
